NSW Schools Orienteering Championships NSW State League 12 & 13 (and Lake Macquarie Games) 16 th and 17 th August 2014 Newcastle Orienteering Club is conducting the 2014 NSW Schools Orienteering Championships in conjunction with NSW State League Events 12 and 13. Both events will be held close to Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, and not far from the M1 motorway. The NSW Schools Sprint Championships and State League 12 will be contested over two sprint races on Saturday 16 th August. The sprint races will be held on school and TAFE campuses with the longer harder courses entering the adjacent park/bushland. The Booragul map was drawn by Russell Rigby for a Newcastle park sprint in 2013, a new map has been drawn by Rob Vincent for the Glendale sprint. The times for the two races will be added together to determine the overall placings. The NSW Schools Orienteering Championships and State League 13 will be contested as a middle distance race on Sunday 17 th August. The middle distance race will be held on a new map The Tank Paddock drawn by Denis Lyons. Lake Macquarie Games State League 12 and 13 have been included as part of the 2014 Lake Macquarie Games. Lake Macquarie City Council has provided games medals for the first three place getters on each course for each day. Medals will be awarded during the presentation on Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. We thank Lake Macquarie City Council for its assistance with access to the council s land and for its sponsorship in providing medals for the events. Schools SI Stick Collection The hire of SI sticks has been included in the entry fee of all school championship competitors. Competitors should collect their SI Stick from the registration tent at least 30 minutes before their start time. To assist in the distribution of SI sticks it would be appreciated for schools with a number of students entered a teacher from the school could collect all the SI sticks for their students. SI Sticks will be handed out on Saturday morning and collected at the finish desk after the second sprint race. SI Stick will be handed out on Sunday morning and collected at the finish desk after the race.

SATURDAY August 16 - MORNING State League 12 / NSW Schools Sprint Championships - Sprint 1 Venue: Map: Booragul Public School / Lake Macquarie High School / Edwards Park - BOORAGUL Booragul Campus Map Scale: 1:4000 Contour interval 2.0m Fieldwork & cartography: Original version by Russell Rigby 2012, Revised July 2014 by Scott Simson and Russell Blatchford Organiser: Course Planner: Controller: Tim Hackney Russell Blatchford Scott Simson Terrain: Typical school campus - buildings and connecting pathways, interspersed with open spaces and gardens. In wet conditions, pathways may become slippery and footwear will need to be carefully considered. A section of open / semi open parkland with buildings also. Map notes: The map has undergone extensive updates from the original 2012 version. New construction work seems to spring up overnight on some school campuses but it is hoped that this will not be the case before this event. These symbols show areas or features on the map that competitors are forbidden to cross - the penalty being disqualification. There is a legend on the map. How to get there: Drive north from Fennell Bay on the B53 (Toronto Road). At the roundabout take the 3 rd exit into First Street and travel east toward Booragul PS. Drive south from Speers Point on the B53 (Five Islands Road). At the roundabout take the 1 st exit into First Street and travel east toward Booragul Public School. Parking: Please comply with the following parking instructions. The event Organiser has had to engage in lengthy consultation with Lake Macquarie City Council (LMCC) as part of approval and risk assessment to conduct this event. Refer map segment when reading specific parking instructions. Street parking only is available in First, Aspinall, Bell and Rens Streets. In the interest of a fair event, competitors are not to park in First Street to the east

of the Aspinall Street intersection. Depending upon time of arrival, it could be anything up to a ten minute walk to the event arena. Event Arena: To start: The event arena is located in the north west corner of the Booragul Public School grounds. There is only one entry point to the arena, through the school gate on First Street, adjacent to the intersection of First Street and Aspinall Street. Any competitor entering the school grounds from any other entry gate will be disqualified. There is one start location for all courses. Follow orange tapes to the start location. To get to the start, as a condition of our risk assessment with LMCC, competitors must leave the arena via the entry gate to the arena and cross First Street at the pedestrian crossing opposite this school gate. Once over the crossing turn left and follow the orange tapes around the north west end of the lagoon in Edwards Park. Once around the end of the lagoon follow tapes east along the edge of the delightful waters of Cockle Bay.

The distance from the arena to the start is approximately 700 metres. Start: Start intervals are 1 minute. Competitors should move to the pre-start area 3 minutes prior to their allocated start time. Start times: From 10:00 am. Enter on the day start times will be allocated at registration and will be after all other competitors on that course have commenced. Limited entries are available. Spectator control: No spectator control(s) have been specifically included in course planning. However, competitors will be visible from the arena at different stages during their course. Facilities: SI Hire Sticks: Registration / enter on the day / information will be open from 9:00 am. Available from registration. Pre-entry hired SI sticks must be collected no later than 30 minutes before allocated start time. First Aid: St Johns Ambulance will be based in the event centre at Booragul PS (Ph: ) Catering: Provided by the Booragul Public School P and C. Please support them. Menu to be served from the school canteen, adjacent to the arena. Follow the signs. When making your way to the canteen, remember: WATCH FOR COMPERTITORS - GIVE WAY TO COMPETITORS. Toilets: Booragul Public School has kindly provided access to the student toilets. The toilets are located adjacent to the arena. Follow the signs. WATCH FOR COMPERTITORS - GIVE WAY TO COMPETITORS. Please remain mindful that you will be entering the competition area if you use the toilets or purchase from the canteen. Please observe all LIMIT of ARENA signs, or face disqualification. Most importantly, please give way to all competitors on course. They are, more than likely, concentrating on quite intense map reading in a challenging section of their course. If you are going to the toilet you will have your head up. Warm up Area: Out of Bounds: Plenty of opportunities for warming up in the north western section of Edwards Park across First Street from the arena, or anywhere along the 700 metre marked route to the start. All areas of the Booragul Campus map other than the arena, toilets, canteen and designated warm up areas in Edwards Park and along the marked route to the start area. THIS ALSO INCLUDES THE PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL, ADJACENT TO THE ARENA.

Please observe OOB areas indicated by red/white bunting in the arena, and as indicated by the Limit of Arena signage in the vicinity of the toilet and canteen areas of Booragul Primary School. Shoes: NO metal studs or spikes permitted. Enter-on- the - day courses: Register from 9:00 am on first served basis. Starts allocated at registration from approx 10:50 am Available courses: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Hard 1 Course Closure: Map return: 12:15 pm Maps will be returned once all competitors have started - approximately 11:00 am. COURSE AND CLASS INFORMATION Maps will also be available for collection from registration at the afternoon sprint event and the middle distance event Sunday August 17. Control descriptions will be on the map, and will also be available at the pre-start Course Classes Length (km) Climb (m) No. of controls * Hard 1 M21A M17-20A M35A M15A M16A M17+A Hard 2a M40A M45A M50A W21A W35A M21AS Hard 2b W17-20A M55A M60A M65A W40A W45A W17+A Hard 3a W50A W55A W60A W21AS W35AS M70A M35AS Hard 3b W15A W16A W65A W70A W75A W80A M75A M80A M45AS M55AS W45AS W55AS Moderate M13A M14A M15+B W13A W14A W15+B MopenB Wopen B M15-20B W15-20B Easy M11A M12A W11A W12A M13-14B W13-14B Open Easy Very Easy M9A M10A W9A W10A M11-12B W11-12B M/W10N/Open Novice * denotes map change Course Planner s Notes: In order to minimise open running and increase sprint feel, courses have been set to the long side of ONSW recommendations of 15 minute winning times. Winning times for some age classes might approach 18 minutes.

All courses feature a significant amount of controls and a significant amount of direction change. Competitors should take sufficient care to ensure that they visit the correct controls on their course, all controls on their course, and that they visit those controls in the correct sequence. Please KEEP LEFT at stairs and building corners. You will more than likely meet on coming runners. If all runners keep left collisions can be avoided. Please remain mindful of mapping symbols for impassable and forbidden to cross features (refer map notes earlier). In some instances gardens, fences and walls may appear crossable to the naked eye, but mapping representation must guide route choice. In some areas red/white tape, hung horizontally and/or vertically has been used to reinforce features mapped as uncrossable on the map. An example of this taping will be displayed at the prestart. Please do not risk disqualification. This morning is all about the GATES. There are no fewer than 8 vehicle and/or pedestrian gates (symbol above) that provide access to or exit from the school campuses. The fence is a high security fence, and not all gates have been mapped as open for the event. If a gate is not mapped as open then you will have a problem on your hands. Then there are an additional 3 internal gates (symbol above) that allow transition from one school campus to the other. An extra couple of seconds taken considering the best choice of gate could be significant in your final course time. There is an unmanned map change for the Hard 1 course. After punching the final control on map 1, place map 1 in the box adjacent to the control, and take map two from the second box. Both boxes will be clearly labelled. HARD 3A, HARD 3B and EASY course competitors will also visit the control adjacent to the hard 1map change boxes during their course. Please do your best to avoid the boxes, which shouldn t be too difficult. I hope you enjoy the courses, as it had been an enjoyable challenge trying to give course setting a sprint orienteering feel. BOORAGUL (Sprint 1) to GLENDALE (Sprint 2) - allow 10 to 15 minutes driving time

SATURDAY August 16 - AFTERNOON State League 12 / NSW Schools Sprint Championships - Sprint 2 Venue: Map: Glendale Technology High School and Glendale Campus of TAFE. The Old Steam Tram (NEW MAP!) Map Scale: 1:4000 Contour interval 2.0m Fieldwork & cartography: Completed by Robert Vincent, May-July 2014 Organiser: Geoff Peel Course Planner: Shane Trotter Controller: Terrain: Robert Vincent Typical school and TAFE campus buildings, canopies, stairways and connecting pathways, interspersed with open spaces, carparks, paved areas and gardens. CAUTION: In wet conditions, pathways or stairs may become slippery and footwear will need to be carefully considered. Map notes: The map is of a NEW site never used for orienteering before. These symbols show areas or features on the map that all competitors are forbidden to cross. Disqualification will result from breaches! There is only a small legend on the map showing unusual symbols in addition to the impassable ones listed above. As the site involves multi-level buildings due to its steep slopes, mapping generally refers to the ground floors as a priority. This presents a problem for competitors when you approach a building from the second/third floor and needing to drop down a level to controls. Stairs, ramps or grass slopes allow access to lower levels. All controls are at ground level (relatively) and RED/WHITE bunting has been used to block off NO ACCESS stairs to guide competitors away from non-routes.

How to get there: From The Crossroads Glendale (junction B53/B89) travel West along Main Road (B89) for 500m to the traffic lights at Frederick Street and turn right. Travel 80m and turn right into Clare Street, then follow this East for 350m to the High School bus bay on the left. DO NOT ENTER the site via the TAFE entrance at the end of Frederick Street as it is Out of Bounds! Parking: Enter the High School via the bus bay off Clare Street through an open gate. Park adjacent to the entrance track as directed. When full, vehicles will park in the bus bay area as directed, then along the public streets including, Clare Street, Oakland Street, Emily Street. Buses will not be able to enter the property so will be parked in the bus bay. Refer map segment below. Event Arena: To start: The event arena is located in the Eastern section of the High School on the sports oval. There is only one entry point to the arena, through the school gate at the back of the bus bay and along the dirt track. All building areas are Out of Bounds. Any competitor entering these from any other entry may be disqualified. There is one start location for all courses. You will see the Start at the bus shelter when you enter the property. Start: Start intervals are 1 minute. Competitors should move to the pre-start area 3 minutes prior to their allocated start time.

Start times: From 1:30pm. Enter on the day start times will be allocated at registration and will be after all other competitors on that course have commenced. Limited entries are available. Spectator control: Spectator control(s) have been specifically included in course planning. Competitors will be visible from the arena and walk to the start at different stages during their course. Please observe OOB areas indicated by red/white bunting in the arena, and as indicated by the signage. NO metal studs or spikes permitted. Enter-on- the - day courses: Register from 12:30 am on first served basis. Starts allocated at registration from approx 2:20 pm Available courses: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Hard 1 Course Closure: Map return: 3:45 pm Maps will be returned once all competitors have started approx 2:30pm Maps will also be available for collection from registration at the the middle distance event Sunday August 17.

An event official will be on duty in these areas of risk (follow their directions). All courses feature a significant number of controls and a significant amount of direction change. Competitors should take sufficient care to ensure that they visit the correct controls on their course, all controls on their course, and that they visit those controls in the correct sequence. CHECK CONTROL CODES CAREFULLY AS MANY CONTROLS ARE CLOSE TOGETHER! Please KEEP LEFT at stairs and building corners. You will more than likely meet on coming runners. If all runners keep left collisions can be avoided. Paved areas will be slippery if wet. Please remain mindful of mapping symbols for impassable and forbidden to cross features (refer map notes earlier). In some instances gardens, fences and walls may appear crossable to the naked eye, but mapping representation must guide route choice. High walls exist in many places so care must be taken not to cross impassable walls. In some areas red/white tape identifies out of bounds, impassable routes or forbidden routes. There are two gates that provide an exit from the campuses. The boundary fence is a high security fence, and one gate is located at the entrance to TAFE (West end of map), the other is the School gate used for this event. All courses stay inside the security fence and no other perimeter gates are open.

Competitors must report to the pre-start at least 6 mins before their allocated start time. Courses available: The following Enter-on-the-Day courses will be offered: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate and Hard 4. A String Course will operate from the Registration. Mapper s notes: The area consists of three distinctive types of terrain. A. Former open farm paddocks which are now covered in long, thick grasses (slow), gorse (walk) and patches of regrowth (generally slow). Some stands of original forest allow easier running. The open paddocks have an intricate pattern of trail bike tracks. If wet, the grass holds the water and the tracks have muddy sections. B. The sides of a main watercourse system, with numerous side gullies and watercourses. The vegetation in this section varies from reasonably runnable to thicker sections with reduced speed and visibility. There are some large sections of tee-tree, some -slow run, some -walk. Lantana has invaded some of this area. Where it occurs in patches, the closeness of the green blobs will indicate the chances of been unimpeded. Solid green means impenetrable. C. The southern and eastern sections of the area are generally open, fast, eucalypt forest. Lantana is minimal, except along the southern edge. Spikey vegetation as well as lantana mean that full body cover is recommended. Courses will aim to have competitors move in and out of these three types of terrain. The map has well defined boundaries. To the north is a disused railway with rails still in place. To the east is an old railway formation with a track (not rails) on it, and a fence on its eastern side. A creek and swamp with thick lantana along with a dam form the southern boundary. Roads form the western boundary. Some large swamps exist along the edge of the map, inside the railway formations. Competitors on HARD courses will come to a control which will be visible from the eastern end of the assembly area. The distance that each course still has to complete is indicated below. H1: 3.6km, H2: 2.3km, H3A: 2.2km, H3B: 1.9km, H4: 2.1km, Special map symbols: X The black cross is used to represent a car wreck. O The black circle is used for other man-made features. X The brown cross represents a termite mound. X A green cross represents a significant single large tree. NB. Meat-ant nests are not shown
