<p/> 10th March 2017 (2017 edition #10) It s the second issue of March, and the days are noticeably lengthening, so people are no doubt making the most of the extra light and heading out on late afternoon bike rides. As usual, a week of many races has passed, including the final club duathlon, which took place in trying conditions. Well done to all who met their challenges. As always, your contributions will always be gladly received for inclusion in the Transition Times. Please direct them to: tt@tri-anglia.co.uk Congratulations to Billie Butler can raise her parkrun bat aloft because she reached her half a century parkrun on Saturday, running at Cambridge parkrun with Lucy Gossage. Results scanners went awry as they are wont do to sometimes, and everyone got 59:59. It was a great occasion for all, by all accounts. Well done Billie. Gossage went on be second female at Cambridge, beating her 2013 PB, so the excursion obviously brought her a good feeling. These achievements and more triathletes news from the weekend can be found here. In parkrun news, Mark Hadley PBed at Fritton. Robert Whalen was a first timer at Kettering and Kerry Davis was a first timer at Fritton. Steve Jackson was a northerly parkrunner doing his 5k in Durham, while Kraig and Claire Cole were south of England down in West Sussex, in Worthing. See who else did what, where, here: Consolidated Club Report for Tri-Anglia Well done to Dominic Clues and Zoe Clues, with a 23 second PB for Dominic, at Norwich Junior Parkrun Well done those who took on the final Lotus duathlon, including new guests. Read Rob Lines report here for a full account of what went on: Congratulations to anyone who secured a special Tri-Anglia biscuit ingeniously made by Nicole Beck. Congratulations to all the Cambridge half marathon runners, including Lucy Gossage, fresh from Billie Butler s parkrun, who PBed in 1:16:34. All those running for Tri-Anglia should be found via this link: Not included on this list is Emily Smith who also crossed the line in the great time of 1:50:15. Well done to the Hunny Bell runners, who ran in this Holt fundraiser for Break. You can read this article below which gives an account of the action, and marks the memory of NNBR runner Wayne Challinor:
Thank you to Jonathan Cordle, for a post-race round-up from this Hunny Bell XC, from the Tri-Anglia Facebook group: Congratulations to Iain Robertson on winning the race in a time of 28:06. Now the proud owner of the Golden Shoe! Quite a good race for Tri-Anglia as we had 3 of the top 7. Pieter MacKeith was 6th in a time of 29:49 and I was just behind in 7th in a time of 29:58. Becky Schofield was narrowly beaten into second in the ladies in a time of 31:43. Richard Evans was 97th in 39:35 and Paul Saunders 126th in 42: finished the race. Great race, around 4.5ish miles with lots of lovely inclines and a few muddy bits to make it my sort of race. Well done too to Russell Clarke in the Abu Dhabi Triathlon. Well done to Renata Garfoot, Rebecca Thorby, Paul Youngman and Geoffrey Garfoot in the Nelson Knee Knobbler. Well done to Mike Pleasants in a different Bury XC to the EACCL one which took place three days later Well done to all who ran at Nowton Park on Wednesday for the ninth fixture of the EACCL. Dropping like flies, to an increasingly bare bones team, saw Frank Ellis, Janice Coglin- Hibbert, Matt Dawson, Richard Evans, Mark Philo, Jonathan Cordle and Tessa Killingbeck take to the surprisingly muddy wood and daffodils of the Bury St. Edmunds parkrun route. For the final Catton Park fixture, head along on Wednesday 22 nd March. Big congratulations to Rob Lines who is now a fully qualified British Triathlon Level 2 coach. We know he will be excellent, as his skill, knowledge, organisational and communicative abilities and encouragement are second to none. Good luck on your coaching journey and progression, Rob! Lucky is anyone who will be coached by him. News Items Diss Duathlon Sunday 2 nd April Marshal Request With the club s season opening event less than four weeks away, it s time to call upon the good nature and volunteer spirt of our club members to step forward and offer up a little bit of time to ensure that we maintain the high standards of marshalling previously set at this popular season opener. Many thanks to those of you who have already come forward, but we are still short of our requirement to ensure a safe race for all. If you can spare a few hours on Sunday 2 nd April, please contact me via if possible on stephendickens2008@btinternet.com. A polite reminder that if you have entered and are a Tri-Anglian, then you are required to provide a marshal for this event. I do have a small number of marshal duties that occur before the event gets underway, in case you cannot nominate a marshal. (Mostly early car parking assistance)
With your support, I m confident that we will again be able to put on a first class event, showcasing our great club. Many thanks, Steve Dickens Marshal Coordinator IM Talk podcast Kim Morrisson Plug yourself into this podcast, as Kim Morrisson has words to say: Now on Survey Monkey UK Triathlon Spends and Trends please participate For convenience, Giles Brooks has changed the format of his recent survey so you can access it on Survey Monkey. 4 Upcoming Club Training Sessions Upcoming club training sessions can be found via the Training for the next two weeks on the training sessions page. You can book yourself into sessions via that page. Simply click the attending button and when your name appears in green against that session you have a confirmed place. If your name appears in grey, the session is full and you are on a roll down list and will be invited when a place becomes available. Should your name be in black then you ve been sent an invite. A line through your name means you have declined an invite. New and Updated Events to Our Calendar Do please check our Events Calendar. If you see an event up there that you are attending, please click the "attending" button. You will need to be logged on to the website. If your event isn't there, please add it (please check the listings before submitting a duplicate). You can see just the events from the calendar that you are attending with the My Events feature. The names in brackets are of the member who submitted the event to our calendar. I use the calendar along with who is attending each event to help populate the weekly good luck section below. Be sure to tt@tri-anglia.co.uk to let us know how you did in your week of triendeavours, any PBs achieved, and anything of note. To all our members who are racing or out training this week, stay safe! Don t forget to tag yourself as attending the events in our calendar so that we can give you a shout, and remove yourself if you have to drop out. Thanks Thank you to James Smith, Rob Lines, Steve Dickens and Frank Ellis for their contributions to this edition of TT. It is much appreciated. Please keep your submissions and race reports coming in. That s Interesting! this section contains little things that have caught our eye this week that you might find interesting. If you find anything of note, or which you think could be of benefit to others, please share it with us at tt@tri-anglia.co.uk Steve Dickens has brought our attention to a terribly disgusting, and terribly common occurrence! Raise your hand if you re contributing to this issue:
Not specifically sport-related, but found on Lucy Gossage s Twitter profile. It s always important to take stock of what we actually want: Grabbed in Transition Week 6 It s a warm welcome to Frank Ellis, triathlete and Membership Secretary. TT: Firstly, thank you very much for allowing Transition Times to flag you down in the Transition Zone. I located this humorous account of your first triathlon What can you tell me about your progression in the sport from this point on? Have your transition times diminished by now (this interview notwithstanding?) FE: On the one hand, yes my T1 has improved from the 3:41 of that first tri; on the other you could say still room for improvement. In one of the Norwich Olympic tris I just couldn t find my bike having made the classic mistake of fixating on the amazing bikes next to mine and not noticing the row I was in. Then in the Beccles Tri last year I was not pleased with myself when novice Emily Smith (she won t mind me mentioning this) beat me by 1 second overall, even though I was a little faster than her in each of swim, bike and run. Huh! TT: What underlies your excellent moniker 'Swim About Frank'? I have always liked it a lot, from the time you turned around my membership card overnight so that I could take an emergency swim in the lake two years ago. Have you been a keen swimmer since you were a boy? FE: That was just one of those random wordplay things. Jane (my wife) and I met an Australian woman on a hike in Switzerland whose was walkaboutlouise; then Jane decided to call herself walkaboutjane; then I was doing a lot of swimming (and membership) with EAST and I needed to have a non-work and so went for the symmetrical swimaboutfrank. And just to complete this absurdity, Penny Edwards was casting about for a new name and we were laughing about walkabout and swimabout, so Penny called herself runaboutpenny. That doesn t answer the question about when I started swimming which was when I was about 40. I did work hard on that and by the time I was 50 I could do 1500m freestyle in say 32 mins which is OK because that is more or less what I do with a wetsuit on at Whitlingham. TT: I have been distracted looking at your eminent career in international development, but to home in on the domestic side of your athletic development, you secured an Eaton parkrun PB in October, and you're working your way down to a new one. What are your thoughts on the parkrun scene? Was it the parkrun which paved the way for your first triathlon? FE: I did a couple of Eaton parkruns just before that first Waveney Tri in My time was over 28 mins which I have now got down to 24:10, but I have a sinking feeling that in the ongoing tension between improvement and age, age may soon get the upperhand. I will be 70 later this year. Aaargh! I love parkruns, they are so equalising and brilliantly devised and have got so many people I know into running who never would have considered running 5k before. TT: You've been a regular fellow enjoyer of the East Anglian Cross Country League. How long have you been competing in these races, and are they your favourites? FE: I started turning up to EACCL races in 2014, but only did a few that season. I think the motivation was to see if I could do more runs of around 10k or more, given that until then I was rather fixated in parkrun mode. They are so enjoyable that I have done more and more of them each year, and hope to complete 9 out of the 10 this season. It is amazing how you can start off shivering in horrible weather and wishing you had stayed at home, then when
you run in soaking wet and covered in mud you get this inexplicable buzz. TT: I am interested to learn what red, black, yellow and white competition flags are marked on your 2017 calendar. Also, do you harbour a latent urge to become an Ironman? FE: It took me a bit of time to decipher that question, Tessa, but I think I m now on top of it. This year I m down to do Waveney 1 (missed it last year), Beccles Tri, Norwich Olympic Tri and North Norfolk Tri. I really like Waveney 1 as a start to the season, especially the bike route. This year my daughter is going to come up from Hove to do it with me, the only other tri she has done was the supersprint at Brighton Tri last year. I find the Olympic distance quite challenging as it is, so I think the Ironman in me is latently minuscule. The 5-year age banding at Norwich Olympic has been quite advantageous for me I won the age group 3 years running, then was quite taken aback last year when instead of 1 there were 6 competitors in the group and I came fourth. Still, I hope to see them all off this year when I enter the age group. Not that I m competitive or anything. TT: You re absolutely right, it makes no sense at all. (It is club colours to anyone who is left wondering.) TT: Finally, thank you for making thousands of membership cards for Tri-Anglia. If you have any further words on triathlons, membership cards or Tri-Anglia, please tell us before you depart from the Transition Zone! FE: Doing the membership is just fine, and I get plenty of encouraging feedback; also persuading someone who s wavering about whether or not to take up triathlons that this is really something they ought to do is not difficult because I ve gained so much enjoyment from joining Tri-Anglia myself. It is a truly inclusive club; I have come last on many occasions (most recently twice at the Lotus duathlon) and get just as much enthusiasm and encouragement from organisers and marshals as if I was one of the stars. Hurray for Tri- Anglia! Postscript TT: Hear hear!
