Welcome to Liverpool City Little Athletics A Message from the Committee On behalf of the Committee we would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the families, especially the athletes, joining Liverpool City Little Athletics Centre in Season. Liverpool City Little Athletics Centre was established in 1971, and it is recognised by LANSW as one of the oldest running clubs in NSW. Our Club s motto is Family, Fun and Fitness, which mainly means that we would like to have the whole family join in the fun and get involved. On Friday Nights he athletes are divided into age groups and move around the Oval between various athletics events. This is a perfect opportunity for the kids, not only, to form lots of new friendships, or rekindle acquaintances from last season, also to perfect their techniques and strive to achieve their Personal Best (PB s) while having fun and getting fit at the same time. The parents while supervising their kids can get involved too. The Centre is managed entirely by parents of our athletes (just like you). All official positions are voluntary. To run the program effectively, we need your assistance. The best part is that you do not need any special qualifications or Certificates to be a great helper. We have designed a Parent Roster (see. P.7) to assist with equipment set up and pack up. However the help is needed and greatly appreciated on all other Friday nights. Most importantly, we are not a Child Care Centre, so do not drop your kids off and disappear. We have a centre website, Facebook page Liverpool City Little Athletics Centre and a newsletter that will keep you up to date with things around the track. Important dates and events, or special announcements would be communicated in that way. These websites will be the main source of information for our members. It contains all the information you will need to know about our centre. If you do not have a regular access to internet, please let us know, so we can arrange an alternative if required. If anyone has any stories or photos they would like to contribute throughout the year, please let one of the committee know. The Club runs a weekly canteen, raffles and Fundraiser BBQ s. Every dollar raised goes right back into our Club to contribute towards the running of the Centre, equipment upgrade, end-of-the season trophies and Presentation Day. Your support will ensure that the kids have the best opportunity to attain their goals at being their best, and the Club would have the possibility to provide the enjoyable and fun environment for the athletes to do just that. Any questions, suggestions, ideas or concerns you may have can, and should be discussed with any of the committee members. We can be easily identified by their committee shirts; we are a pretty friendly lot, especially when approached with a smile. Any input will be considered and we will do our best to assist you, to the best of our ability. We would like to wish the athletes and their families, a very enjoyable and prosperous season. Welcome to your new Little Athletics Family Kind Regards, Management Committee

What Happens on A Friday Night? Where: Dwyer Oval, Williamson Crescent, Warwick Farm Season Starts: Friday 4th September 2015 from 5.45pm October Long Weekend: No competition Friday 2 nd October 2015 Season Ends: Friday 11 h March 2016 Christmas Holidays: Break for Christmas Holidays, 18 th December 2015 Return from Christmas Holiday, 15 th January 2016 Arrival: Arrive 5:30 for a 6.00pm start Different age groups will finish at different times. This will also depend on the number of parent helpers out with the age groups. Please arrive early to warm up as a club. The Program: We run a two week program, the details are on page 23 & 24, and this allows the athletes to participate in as many events more frequently. Both nights start with either the walk or the 3k. U6-U17: Each Friday evening begins with any important announcements. The athletes will be called to meet in the middle of the field. There will be trolleys for each age group. The athletes are to wait for their age manager and parent helpers in their appropriate groups, and then they will be taken to their various events throughout the evening. Tiny Tots: Each Friday night Tiny Tots will be called at about 6:10. They will meet at the western end of the field, to compete in various play activities which are fun but at the same time developing their motors skills. They will also run a few races but are non-competition. Uniforms: All children must wear a centre uniform with the patches handed out at registration and comfortable shoes (see page 9 for more details). Wet Weather: If it has been raining during the week or on Friday afternoon and you are still not sure if our weekly competition will be on, we will attempt to have the information on our website as soon as we can or you can check our Facebook page. Sometimes the decision may not be made until 6pm. We will always try to run the night, even if it the program is reduced. Keep in mind that if the Council has closed the grounds due to wet weather that decision can not be over ruled by the Committee. Parent Attendance: During any competition whether it s Friday night or championship events there must always be a parent and or guardians that stay at the ground. If your child is left unsupervised, they will be excluded from competition. First Aid: All injuries, no matter how small, must be reported to the first Aid Officer. Please see the announcer where a first Aid officer will be called. s/Newsletters: We send out weekly information if needed and a newsletter fortnightly to keep you informed with news you need for the season. Please make sure we have your correct address. Alternatively, catch up with news via our website Fundraising: Don t forget we have a canteen & BBQ each week. Please help buy buying raffles, as this will help raise money to upgrade our equipment and Presentation Day. 4

Parents: What you can do to help? Parent Participation So that athletics is as enjoyable and well run as possible for your children, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Don t worry if you feel you may not know enough to assist. All jobs are fairly easy and no experience is necessary. There is always someone who will show you. Parents can help with measuring throws or jumps and recording races. We also need help at the canteen, recording and setting up and packing equipment away. For smooth operation, it is essential that everyone helps, otherwise the night is delayed. Every one that helps needs to sign in, whether if it s helping the age manager or assisting with duties on the parent roster. The minimum requirements for each family are helping at least once a month per child. Age Managers and Assistants This could be you. Each age group will have an age manager and parents to help record, measure and also supervise the children. If the group is particularly large then separate age managers for boys and girls will be needed. Age managers will organise children at their events. They will also advise the athletes about upcoming events such as our gala days and championship events. A basic instruction manual will be handed out and will always be in the folder in each of groups. Thank you to everyone who has already put their hand up. Starter Two race starters are requires for each nights races. It s important that we have a few extra people trained in this role so they can fill in if the regular starter is unavailable. Please let the President or committee members know if you re interested. Want to get really serious? LANSW offers a serious of officials certificates (from level D up to A) based on a closed book examinations of the rules. Anyone interested in any of these courses please see the President or committee members. For parents who want to want to coach please let us know, we are always looking for more coaches. The club can help with a coaching course if required. Track officials As part of your roster a recorder will be needed for the straight track and circular track. If it s your first time, we will run through it with you on how to record track events. Each age group will also need 1 person to call out athlete s registration number to recorder. If anyone likes this duty and would like to do it most weeks, please let the committee know. It s probably the best view of all the track events. Setting up and packing up: Please refer to the roster on page 7 Canteen: Please refer to the roster on page 7 Focus on your child s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing 6

Parent Roster There are 4 very important duties involved in the roster. This will help run our night much more quickly and efficiently. It also means that the same people every week are not doing the same jobs. All parents who are assisting must sign in the duty they are performing with the Age Manager. We keep track of who is helping, so please contact a committee member if you re unable to complete your duty. 9 Uniforms For the Season Liverpool City LAC will be running two approved uniforms. The old uniform, which is being phased out, can still be worn on Friday Nights and all Championships in Season, however it will no longer be available for purchase. (The green and gold stripes singlet and shortspictured to the left) The new uniform, (pictured to the right) consists of boy s singlet, girl s singlet, crop top, bike pants, longer style shorts and racing shorts. From following Season, it will be the only acceptable uniform for LCLAC. The uniform will be available to purchase each Friday night, at the equipment shed. It s a requirement of LANSW that all patches and registration numbers must be attached to the uniform. This is a procedural requirement that ensures current registration and insurance cover. It helps to identify the athlete and also assists with the efficient conduct of events. See below on where all patches go. Athlete Registration Number The McDonald s registration number must be attached to the front of the uniform singlet. The red border must be fully visible, without any modification. Jetstar Patch Jetstar Patch must be attached to the right-hand top corner above the registration number. The Age Patch must be attached to the front left-hand side of the shorts or bike pants.. Athletes aged Under 11 and above may only wear spiked shoes in events run entirely in lanes, in jumping events and for javelin. Spiked shoes must be removed by all athletes when travelling between events and must never be worn outside the oval. A spike licence is issued at the beginning of the season; this is a code of conduct and must be signed by the athlete and the parent. 9

Results/Records Apart from Tiny Tots, results are recorded every Friday night and posted online during the week. All athletes should be encouraged to improve on their own personal times, throws and jumps. We encourage you to keep a record of your child s results and you can do this online, please visit myresults.littleathletics.com.au It s a fun way to keep track of your own personal performance. My Results includes a web app for use on your smart phone so you can enter results when during Friday nights or Gala days. If you believe there has been an error in any results please Aggie hornundzek@hotmail.com with the date, event, athletes name and registration number and any other relevant details. 20 Know your Events Straight Track At the start of each laned race the starter will issue three commands: On your Mark This commands athletes to move up to a position just behind the starting line. Set This commands the athletes to get ready and then stand completely still until the gun is heard. BANG! Or BEEP! At the sound of the gun the athletes run like the proverbial wind from the starting line to the finish line, always staying within one lane. Events conducted on the straight track are 50m, 70m & 100m sprints and 60m, 80m, 90m, 100m, and 110m hurdles. When crossing the finish line only the torso (neck to waist) is judged. Circular Track Events conducted on the circular track have two distinctly starting methods. The staggered start is used for 200m, 400m and 800m events. Athletes must remain on the one lane for the entire race with the exception of the 800m where athletes switch to the inside lane after the completion of the first bend. The other method is the pack start, where athletes start along a curved line and gradually cross to the inside lane before the next bend is reached. Pack start races do not use the set step in the start sequence. Refer to page 22 and 23 for pack start distances for each age group. Hurdles What is the basic technique? Hurdling is basically an extension of running. The first leg over the hurdle is called the lead leg and the second leg over is called the trail leg. The lead knee is lifted first (not the foot) with toe pointed forward. It is then extended. The trailing leg is brought over the hurdle with the knee and foot at the same level. Remember to run across the hurdles, not jump them. Hurdles are constructed in such a way that, when jumped from the correct direction and knocked, they will simply collapse. No penalty is incurred for knocking a hurdle over. Hurdles should never be jumped from the reverse direction as this could result in serious injury. Shot A shot is a circular metal ball that athletes have to put (pushing motion) as far as they can. The feet should be shoulder width apart with back foot slightly pointing to the rear. Shot is held close to the neck, elbow raised to shoulder level. Hips are driven, up and forward, leading the shoulder. Shot is pushed out with full extension of the arm. The shot must be put from the circle and land within the sector lines. When the throw is completed, the athlete must exit the circle at the rear half of the circle. A foul will be recorded if: The hand drops away from the neck during the putting action. If the shot is put from behind the line of the shoulder If the shot is thrown like a ball If the athlete leaves the circle in an uncontrolled manner If any part of the athletes body touches the top (not the inside edge) of the stop board. If any part of the athlete s body touches the outside of the circle during the putting action. If the athlete walks out the front half of the circle. If the shot lands on or out of the sector lines Refer to page 22 and 23 for weight of shot used for each age group 20

Discus A discus is an implement in the shape of a plate that the athlete has to throw as far as they can. The discus can be made of rubber, wood and metal. The discus must be thrown from within the radius, similar to shot. On completion of the throw the competitor must exit the circle at the rear of the circle. For the younger athletes it may take a while to be able to make a discus fly flat. In fact the discus can come out of the hand in any way, even out the back. The beginners start with a standing throw, feet placed apart at shoulder width, throwing arm swinging to the rear in a wider flat circle. To get the correct technique for shot and discus speak to our coach Sharyn Dickson. Sharyn is available most Friday nights to help some age groups, Refer to page 22 & 23 for weights for each age group. High Jump There are two ways for an athlete to clear the bar in high jump - the scissors and the flop Commencing from the season, the scissor technique will be the only high jump technique that is allowed to be used at any level of competition for the athletes in the U10 age group and below, (i.e. only the U11 age group and above will be able to use the flop technique ). In order to transition to this requirement, LANSW will introduce this rule for U9 athletes in the season. The athlete s task in this event is to run up from the approach area and jump over the crossbar between the rigid uprights. The leg closest to the bar is driven up and over the bar. Each athlete gets three (3) attempts. The crossbar is raised after each round. If the athlete misses the bar on three consecutive attempts they are out of the competition. The last height they cleared would be recorded as the height they reached. Long Jump This event is exactly what the name says jump long. Approach run must be controlled, accurate and fast. Look forward, not down at the take off area. Jump from the take-off area from one foot and drive your other leg and your arms high into the air. Land on two feet and bend the legs at the hips and knees. The distance is measured from the last impression left in the sand. that s why if you feel you are losing your balance, lean forward, to avoid falling back on your hands. The aim is to jump up and out. Triple Jump Similar to long jump, previously called (hop, step & jump). The athletes take off leg must be the leg on which they next land. The athlete must then use the opposite leg for their final jump into the pit. For example: if you take off with right foot, you hop to the same (right) foot. Step to the other (left) foot. Jump to both feet. The knee of hopping leg is brought through flexed and high. Hop and step landing are with flat foot. Drive free leg and arms high into jump take off. Athletes can choose whether to take off from 5, 7, 9 or 12 meter marks. Beginners should always start from 5 meter mark. Javelin A javelin is a metal or fiberglass implement in the shape of a spear. Javelin is held at head height, with palm facing upward. Javelin is taken back straight. Throw should have a pronounced backward lean from the ground. Coming over the top of the shoulder. The javelin is thrown from behind a curved line. The aim for the athlete is to land the javelin point first inside the sector and as far as possible forward. Just a reminder, that field events are dangerous so children must not touch equipment unless they are instructed to do so. 21

If any markers have been removed the Record will not be recognized. Also the athlete must be a registered member of the Club, wearing a full centre uniform. (For full information, please see a LCLAC Local Competition Rules.) Records can also be claimed for performances at official LA NSW & LA Aust. Competition events, including Trans Tasman. #walking events require specialized judging by several qualified officials. The club is not in a position to provide this level of judging on Friday nights. Records cannot be claimed for performances in training, or at Gala Day. 27
