For this reason, each child is given a performance ticket for every event completed. These tickets should be placed in the child s Little Athletics Book and a running tally kept of the performances using the Record of Results Table at the back of that book. A CANTEEN is operated during the hours of competition and provides a wide range of refreshments. It is our aim to offer canteen facilities at reasonable prices while at the same time ensuring that our canteen is a profitable venture for our centre. All surplus revenue from sales at the canteen enables us to purchase or update equipment. Each family is given a book of raffle tickets at Registration and money raised from this goes towards the purchase of trophies, ribbons, etc. Warradale LAC Season 2013 / 2014

ASSISTANCE FROM ALL PARENTS IS ESSENTIAL Each week we need parents to help run our program. We are only too aware of how difficult it is to find time to help, however we ask you to arrange the time, as one of the main purposes of Little Athletics is for families to enjoy a night together. 9 CRITERIA FOR JUNIOR AND SENIOR ATHLETE Junior and Senior athlete of the season are selected by the Committee members based on the following criteria: Ability Attendance Participation Sportsmanship Representation LITTLE ATHLETICS IN GENERAL The concept of Little Athletics was the brain child of Trevor Billingham. The first competition started in 1964 in Victoria. The New South Wales motto Run for Fun is simple and enjoyment will be derived from Little Athletics if this motto is always kept in mind. The Association has gradually spread throughout Australia, commencing in New South Wales in Competing athletes in this inaugural year totalled The season has no specific start of season some centres commence as early as the first week in September, others as late as the end of October. The season climaxes with the State Track and Field Championships held in March, while for the U13 and U15 (Multi) age groups a National Teams Championship is conducted at varying times after the State Championships. For these championships a team is selected to compete against the other States for the Teams Championship Trophy. Warradale LAC Season 2013 / 2014

11 WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO HELP OUT? Little Athletics has been successful for a number of reasons. The low cost of participation, a very lean, cost effective administration and generous support from numerous sponsors, all play a vital role. However, the most important of all is the self help philosophy of a small army of parents and well wishers, who, week after week, volunteer their time to ensure smooth running of the association at grass roots level. These are the people who help organise and administer the centres, who as starters, judges, timers, measurers, marshals and carry out the 101 other tasks so essential at even the smallest meet or training session. Unfortunately there are some parents who consider their responsibilities are no more than dropping off and picking up their children. That s a pity because they are missing out on the key factor in the philosophy of Little Athletics THE FAMILY! Family participation was seen by the originators of Little Athletics as the strongest; benefit provided by the sport. First and foremost it was seen as a family thing an opportunity for Mum, Dad and the children to do something together. What a pity that more parents don t actively participate in the centre organisation and enjoy the fun of sharing the Little Athletics experience with their sons and daughters Fun, of course, is another part of the Little Athletics philosophy but unshared fun is not much fun at all. The other side of the philosophy triangle is fitness. In a report to the member families of the Kurrajong/Bilpin centre a few years ago was this apt message about the Little Athletics Philosophy. The message is as follows: It does sound like an excellent philosophy which should produce a most satisfying experience for all concerned. But why is it with almost 100 families in the registrations there always seems to be nowhere near enough people to efficiently run the regular Friday evening competition? Answers, anyone?? We can all HELP to fix this problem DO IT FOR YOUR KIDS, don t just leave it for someone else each time. Your kids will thank you for it SOME OF OUR GREAT PARENTS & HELPERS Warradale LAC Season 2013 / 2014

12 Are you one of the fortunate few who is gaining the most for your family by being involved with your children? Have you had the opportunity to witness the warm glow of pride and satisfaction on your child s face when they have achieved a personal best performance? Were you there to share in the acquisition of skills that will assist your children to achieve improved fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle? If you can honestly answer yes to these questions then you will know the benefits that Little Athletics can bring to every family that gets involved as a family unit. Regrettably, you will also share the sense of frustration that has grown as increasing numbers of parents refuse to get involved and assist with the running of the programme. Children are dropped off by parents who then sit in their cars or around the oval and watch other parents provide for their children. Or those who disappear out the gate, only returning to collect their children at the end of the evening. None of the involved parents have come to this centre with any previous background or expertise in athletics administration or organisation they all gained their skills from on the job training. It doesn t take a great deal of skill to help set up the equipment at the beginning of the programme, rake the long jump pit, measure the discus throw, press the button on the stop watch, cook a sausage on the BBQ or serve in the canteen. SO, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TONIGHT? Warradale LAC Season 2013 / 2014

16 TRANS TASMAN TOUR The Trans Tasman Meet originated in 1977 with a visit of 108 athletes from Auckland, New Zealand. The visit lasted about nine days and included meets and general touring and was a great success. Athletes from NSW returned the visit the following year and since then the Trans Tasman Tour has been a fixture on the athletic calendar for U11 and U12 Little Athletes. The programme includes all State events except hurdles, triple jump, walks and the multi events. Any interested athlete should speak to the Centre Secretary or Championships Officer and obtain any information you need. TECHNICAL INFORMATION LONG JUMP (Basic rules) 1. Competitors must take off from one foot only. 2. No part of the foot can protrude over the front edge of the half metre sand rectangle. 3. If take off is behind the back edge of the rectangle then the jump is good and must be measured from the back edge (furthest from the pit) of the rectangle. 4. The competitor must not walk back through the landing area. Measuring: The jump is measured by selecting the imprint made in the sand by the foot, hand, etc which is closest to the imprint made on the half metre square by the take off foot. HIGH JUMP (Basic rules) 1. Competitors must take off from one foot only. 2. Knocking off the bar is a failure. 3. Touching the ground / mat beyond the uprights without clearing the bar is a failure ie if competitor runs under the bar. 4. The competitor is eliminated when he or she has three consecutive failed jumps. Measuring: Recording: SHOT PUT (Basic rules) The actual height is determined by the measurement at the centre of the bar. Both ends should be measured to ensure the bar is even. O indicates the bar has been cleared X indicates a failed jump - indicates that a competitor has elected to pass 1. The competitor must leave from the rear half of the circle. Encourage competitors to also enter the circle from the rear. 2. The competitor must not touch the top of the stop board or the ground outside the circle during the trial with any part of their body. 3. The shot must land within the sector. 4. The competitor must not leave the circle until the shot has landed. 5. The shot must be put and not thrown ie the hand must remain stationary without being pulled back. At the time the competitor takes a stance to commence to put, the shot shall be in close proximity to the neck or chin and the hand shall not be dropped below this position. Measuring: The tape is drawn tight between the imprint and the centre of the circle. The distance is measured at the point where the tape crosses the inner edge of the ring or stop board. Warradale LAC Season 2013 / 2014

17 DISCUS: (Basic rules) 1. The competitor must leave the circle from the rear half. Encourage competitors to also enter the circle from the rear. 2. The competitor must not touch the top of the metal ring of the circle or the ground outside the circle during the trial with any part of their body. 3. The discus must land inside the sector. 4. The competitor must not leave the circle until the discus has landed. RELAYS: Measuring: The tape is drawn tight between the imprint and the centre of the circle. The distance is measured at the point where the tape crosses the inner edge of the ring or circle. 1. The baton must be carried in the hand throughout a relay race and if dropped must be recovered by the athlete who dropped it. 2. The baton must be passed only within the takeover zone. The takeover zone is marked by lines placed ten metres before and ten metres after the scratch line. WALKING: 1. The athlete must maintain contact with the ground ie the advancing foot must make contact with the ground before the rear foot leaves the ground. 2. The advancing leg must be straight (not bent at the knee) from the moment that the foot makes contact with the ground until it passes under the body in the vertical position. 24 BARRY & ANNE GARMENT Most of you are well acquainted with the two longest serving members of our Club Barry & Anne Garment. Over the last 25 years Barry and Anne have practically run this Club single handedly, organising our Friday night competition together with the immense amount of work that goes into preparing the Oval and equipment and all the other million things needed to successfully run a Little Athletics Club. Sadly, towards the end of last year Barry s health has taken a turn for the worse and due to this and various other related issues, Barry & Anne have to take quite a large step back in their roles within the Club. Barry will still continue to hold the position of President and Anne will also continue as our Equipment Officer, however they will no longer be able to attend our Friday night comps on such a regular basis. THANK YOU SO MUCH BARRY & ANNE for all that you have contributed to Warradale over the years and we hope to see you as often as possible in the future. Warradale LAC Season 2013 / 2014
