2 Welcome to the 2019 Yungaburra Triathlon Athlete Guide! We are so excited that you have registered for the Yungaburra Triathlon and can t wait to see you all in beautiful Yungaburra on 6 & 7 April. Tablelands Regional Council is proud to present this annual event with the help of amazing sponsors and partners (please see page 23 for a full list) and they would like to wish you all the best in your race(s). The Yungaburra Triathlon supports Returning Service Members by donating 10% of all registration fees to Soldier On, Mates4Mates and the Afghanistan Avenue of Honour charities. Thank you for supporting this great cause by registering for this event and extra donations. Last year over $5,000 was donated and it looks like it will be even more this year! Please take a moment to read through this Athlete Guide prior to race day and make yourself familiar with your race course. Note it is your responsibility to do so. We are using the Triathlon Australia (TA) Race Competition Rules. Triathlon is an individual event and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid infringements. Failure to follow the rules in the latest revision of the TA Race Competition Rules, can void the insurance provided to you by Triathlon Australia, so read them carefully. Please visit the Triathlon Australia website for rules and considerations that you must be aware of. Click here >> The Race Director, Phil Hungerford, will be in charge of the Event on Saturday and Sunday and decisions can and will be made according to his discretion for the safety and best running of the event. Please remember our races are a shared zone, bikes and runners will be using the same road, so please use caution at all times. Have a safe and enjoyable race! Event Coordinator, Irene Cats

3 Discover the Atherton Tablelands Discover the Atherton Tablelands, located just an hour from Cairns in Far North Queensland. Known locally as simply the Tablelands, many people come for a holiday and return for a lifetime! From rolling hills and rushing waterfalls, to spectacular unspoilt natural scenery; from fascinating wildlife and gourmet food trails to wide outback skies, it takes more than a day or even a holiday, to truly discover the hidden secrets of this region. Adventure The Atherton Tablelands is fast developing a reputation as an outdoor recreation destination, with its refreshing tropical climate, mountains, wide open spaces and safe year-round swimming. Horse riding, bushwalking, water-skiing, sailing, fishing and cycling are all on offer. The Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail provides a great way to explore on foot, horseback or bicycle, while the Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park offers world class rides to take your breath away! Nature Cute tree-kangaroos, shy platypus and dancing brolgas are just some of the unique Australian wildlife you can discover on the Tablelands. Encompassing World Heritage rainforests, wetlands and outback savannahs, it is no wonder the region is renowned for its diversity. The crystal clear crater lakes and waterfalls are a legacy of the region s volcanic past, and there are plenty of walking tracks to discover the area. Heritage and Culture The Tablelands has a rich heritage, and stories of the local indigenous people, the early pioneers, miners, farmers, and a once thriving Chinese community, are told in some of the local museums and heritage displays. The region also has a thriving and diverse arts community, with galleries and art studios displaying works of local artists and boutique gifts. Gourmet Foods and Markets The Tableland s rich farm land has not only created stunning landscape but produces some of Australia s best gourmet food outlets, with specialty coffee, chocolate, tea, cheese and dairy, wine and spirits all within a short drive. A highlight on the annual event calendar is the Taste of the Tablelands, held in October. The region is also well known for its local weekend markets providing farm fresh produce and local arts and crafts.

14 Water Stations There will be water stations throughout the run leg of all the events. On Saturday a water station will be situated at the top of the boat ramp access point and one along the foreshore near the Enticer and Taster turnaround points. On Sunday a water station will be situated along Tinaburra Drive opposite the finish straight and at the Harper Avenue turnaround point. There will be no hydration stations on the bike leg of the race. Toilets Public toilets, including disability access, are available at the Tinaburra Foreshore and at Maude Kehoe Park in Yungaburra. We encourage you to make use of the public toilets and portaloos located at the event site. Hydration The hydration powder used at this event is Endura Rehydration Performance Fuel. It is important to note that endurance sporting events can lead to significant dehydration which can have performance, health and safety consequences. It is important to hydrate regularly and effectively, and know that fluid can be lost faster than we can physiologically replace it. As an athlete participating in an endurance event, it is strongly suggested to have a hydration and nutrition plan. Ensure you are hydrated before you begin your activity so you are not dehydrated before you start. The amount of fluid you need to drink during exercise is dependent on the intensity and also the weather conditions. It is recommended, the best way to achieve this is to sip very frequently, approximately 4 or 5 sips every 10 minutes. Race Director Your race director, Phil Hungerford, will be in charge of the event over the two days and he has the authority to make any necessary decisions he deems appropriate regarding the event at any stage. Rules to remember for cheer squad, family and friends The following is strictly prohibited: Riding, driving or running beside a competitor on any part of the course. This is outside assistance and can lead to disqualification of that competitor. The use of permanent paint or crayon for graffiti on any road is prohibited. Chalk is acceptable but where permanent paint graffiti is linked to a competitor, that competitor will be disqualified. 10
