1 OCTOBER MEETING MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1986 AT: NEW LOCATION -- RASCAL'S Restaurant & Lounge 425 Pleasant Valley Way West Orange, New Jersey 7:OOPM: Food and drink orders can be placed. Come early, the place really fills up fast. 8:00PM: Meeting Begins SPEAKER: Cliff Held of the Craftsbury Running Camp, Vermont. Cliff will fill us in on the specifics of his running camp and the programs available there. Designed to improve your running and enhance the enjoyment you should be getting out of it, the camp offers personal counseling, group runs, videotaping, massage therapy, running films and much, much more. Come and listen to Cliff and if it sounds good to the group, a running weekend vacation for members of the Essex Running Club might be in order.
2 HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SEPTEMBER MEETING Our new meeting location, Rascal's Restaurant, Lounge and Comedy Club in West Orange, was very well received. Thanks to Richard Collabeli for making the appropriate arrangements, Rascal's should serve as a wonderful, centrally located and private meeting facility for our ever growing running club. Our Speaker: Ken Manley, used to run, but reached a plateau and took up the new challenge of bicycling. He compared bicycling with running in that it gives the equivalent aerobic benefits without placing as much stress on the knees, ankles and hips. Bicycling, whether on the roads or on a stationary bike is a great cardivascular workout and is used by many top runners to maintain cardiovascular fitness during planned running rest periods or injury. For those impossible winter days where running outside seems like a chore, getting on a stationary bike is a great alternative. Ken also pointed out the overall benefits of bicycling on the upper body musculature which he supplements by lifting weights. Done properly, a bicycle program can benefit any runners level of fitness EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Nominations were presented for consideration and election at the next monthly meeting and they were: Larry Hollander Karen Mishler Norman Kail en John DeHart Gary Peters Jill Booth ] Joe Scyzrek] Vivian Holzer ] Charile Lorber] Milt Westrich Peg O'Dwyer President Vice President Treasurer Membershi p Secretary Entertai nment Program Member-At-Large Member-At-Large The leadership of the Essex Running Club is an important responsibility. Careful consideration of the qualifications and requirements of each person and position on the list should be made by all members so that our continued rate of growth can be maintained through responsible leadership.

Each pre-registrant received an ERC application in his packet and the membership forms have been dribbling in all month. A big thank you to everyone who pitched in and helped out in so many ways on race day. Our Club was highly visible that day and we got much favorable publicity. Local runners now know who we are. Craig Van Doren, the race director, and Bill Mishler, the other ERC members of the race committee, deserve credit and thanks for working on the race with the Jaycees since the beginning of the year. Even without the race, Craig would have had a hectic year -- buying a new home and moving a month before race day, but he somehow never missed a beat.
7 PRESIDENT'S CORNER... Five hundred and twenty (520) runners competed and all proceeds went to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. T-shirts will be given away to all ERC members who helped out and a $100,00 donation was given to ERC for its support by the Verona Jaycees. NEW YORK CITY MARATHON If you are running the NYC Marathon this year, the Essex Running Club is hiring a small bus or van to transport its members to the start (one way) of the race at the Verrazano Narrows. Approximate cost is $ Call Craig Van Doren for details at (201) ' Bill Pennington, a former member who now lives in Atlanta, would like to run the NYC Marathon if someone has an extra number.
