1 The Attributes of Data and Units of Measure - Step-by-Step Lesson Lesson 1 Investigation Problem: Mary is traveling from her home towards her sister s home on a fast rocket. Her sister is traveling from her home toward Mary s home on a bullet train. The distance between Mary and her sister s home is 180 miles. A chart could be used to include all the data necessary for writing an equation. min Mary 60miles 5 min Mary s sister 70miles 7 min a. Complete the miles per min column of the chart. b. Who will reach the other person s home first? c. Mary and her sister have to go to the florist s shop. They drive Mary s car at 60 miles per hour. The shop is 200 miles away from their house. How long will it take to reach the shop? Explanation: a) min Mary 60miles 5 min 12 Mary s sister 70miles 7 min 10 Miles per min = Distance / Time Mary = 60 / 5 = 12 miles per min Sister = 70 / 7 = 10 miles per min

2 b) Mary goes 60/5 = 12 miles per minutes and her sister goes 70/7 = 10 miles per minutes. So they cover 180 miles in: Mary = = 15 min Mary s Sister = = 18 min So her sister makes it to Mary s home first. c) 200 miles 60 mph = time in hours 3.33 hours

It will be student one. c) The fastest person is moving at 3.75 mile per minute. So, they will cover 100 miles in Student one = = minutes Explanation#3 a) Calories burned per minutes = Jordon = = 10 Calories burned per minute Mike = = 7.2 Calories burned per minute Jordon burns calories faster. b) We know that Jordon burns 10 calories per minute at that pace. If he walks 20 minutes the number of calories he burns would be: 20 x 10 = 200 calories
