Junior & Taste of Adventurethon Race Briefing Saturday Transition area Race Start 9am at Parklands next to ANZAC Memorial off Chinaman Drive (Race HQ) TRANSITION Transition (bike and kayak) will be open from the following times: Saturday 3 rd June Ultra, Enduro & Duathlon: 5:30am 6:30am Taste & Junior: 5:30am 6:30am and 7:30am to 8:30am For your safety you will need to inform Race HQ that you have arrived on the morning of your event, this is to ensure we know exactly who is on the course on the day. If you do not check in a Race HQ in the morning we will assume that you have not attended. COLLECTION AND ENTERING TRANSITION Transition will be open for competitors to collect bikes and kayaks after the last competitor has passed that transition. Only competitors with a wrist band can enter transition to collect bike or kayak. If you want a family member or friend to collect your equipment while you are still on the course, please ensure you give them one of the wrist bands in your race kit. For the safety of children and competitors, no children are allowed in the transition area. Competitors will have a small area in the bike transition to store personal items etc. It is best to bring a small towel or container to put your item on to keep them together. On hot days a small esky or tub with Competitor Information Kalbarri Adventurethon
ice can help keep your extra drinks cool. PARKING Competitors are advised to follow all parking signs in the area especially when loading and unloading kayaks. Please use only designated areas. There is limited parking at Natural Bridge (Ultra & Duo Start) and Pot Alley (Enduro Start). We recommend that competitors car pool to these areas where possible. If your friends or family are driving to the start, please ensure that you park in a safe way as this area is still open to the general public. TEAMS AT TRANSITION Each competitor in a team will have the same race number. Team members are to wait in the designated area inside transition (this area will be marked). Enter the transition area beside the timing tent. You must not move forward from the team area until you are tagged by our team member. Kayakers must tag their team member within the transition area before they proceed towards their bike. Riders must rack their bike before and exit transition before the team runs through the finish line. Teams will need to hand over the race number with timing chips attached when they tag. This is your team baton and will allow your team to be timed. We suggest that teams attach this race number to a race belt to make it easy to hand over. Teams are invited to meet at the entry to the finish Chute and complete the finish line run together. This is a great photo opportunity and will also ensure that each member of the team will receive their finishers medallion at the finish line. RACE NUMBERING Each competitor is required to wear their race number at all times during the event. Each member of a team will be provided with the same number, the first member to register on the day will be given the set of numbers for their team. You will receive 2 race bibs in a set plus a sticker for your paddle craft. (2 for duathlon competitors) 1) One bib is to be pinned to the front of your shirt or to your race belt while running (if using a race belt ensure that the number is visible and not under your shirt). This bib will have your TIMING CHIP on it and MUST BE WORN FOR ENTIRE RACE. DO NOT BEND THIS CHIP. Competitor Information Kalbarri Adventurethon
2) Use cable ties to attach to the front of your bike during the Ride. (if you are using a race belt turn the belt to the back during the ride) 3) Stick to the front LEFT hand side of your paddle craft. Race Belt $15 If we cannot see your race number we cannot record your time or that you have passed a checkpoint. Please be helpful to the volunteers and call out your number as you pass or ensure that they have seen your BIB number. Your race number must be visible when you when you move through TRANSITION or FINISH LINE. If you pull out of the race for some reason please ensure that you inform The Timing Tent (near the finish line) as soon as possible. If you do not inform us that you have pulled out of the race we cannot remove volunteers from the course until you are accounted for and will have to deploy emergency services at your cost. FIRST AID First Aid will be available at Race HQ. Checkpoints along the course will also have First Aid kits if you require first aid. PLEASE DETAIL ON THE BACK OF YOUR RACE BIB ANY NOTES REGARDING YOUR CONDITION INCASE OF EMERGENCY CRECHE Creche facilities are available for competitors to use during the race. Bookings are essential. Send an of interest to to find out more information. Must be a minimum of 3 paid bookings by 20 th May for creche to go ahead. If you would like to use it, please make sure you book before this date. SPECTATORS SPECTATING AREAS & RULES There are many places along the course that spectators can see the race. Spectators are not to drive cars along the road following a competitor as this is dangerous for other road users and competitors. We urge them to drive very carefully while on the course as many of the roads are narrow and do not have a wide shoulder for competitors to ride/run in. Competitors are invited to set up tents/ Gazebos along the edge of transition area. It s a great way to enjoy the atmosphere and cheer on your family, friends and fellow competitors. PHOTOGRAPHS SOCIAL MEDIA We try to get as many photos of competitors as possible so if any spectators take photos that they are happy for us to use they can take them to Race HQ and we can copy them onto a computer (they will need to have photos on a SD card or have USB cable for camera). This is also for any video taken on the day. Alternatively, to admin@adventurethon.com.au. Make sure you check out our Social Media Pages for live updates of the race or to upload your own photos to our wall. Competitor Information Kalbarri Adventurethon
Facebook: Twitter: Instagram We will be posting live race information during the day, so it s a good way for your family and friends to cheer you on if they couldn t make it. Hashtag away using the following # s #Adventurethon #Kalbarri #WesternAustralia #MustGoWA #WhatsOnWA #MustDoWA EQUIPMENT BIKES Your bike must be in good working order and you must wear a helmet of Australian Standards at all times while on the bike course. It is highly recommended that you carry 2-3 spare tubes, tyre levers, pump or canister, chain link and other multi tools. If you are unsure of what you need or how to fix your bike on course see your local bike shop for some advice. All competitors must wear a helmet of Australian Standards during the bike course. Helmets must be secured before removing the bike from the transition area and not removed until the bike is racked. Competitors must also have 2 x compression bandages and it is recommended to have a mobile phone with Race HQ emergency number programmed in. You must use the same bike (and rider for teams) throughout the bike course. PADDLE CRAFT It is mandatory for Ultra and Enduro competitors using Skis or Outriggers to use a leg or paddle leash during the paddle leg. Competitors using Sea Kayaks must use a paddle leash and spray skirt. ALL COMPETITORS MUST WEAR A PFD (L50 Type 2 or above) AT ALL TIMES An Orange Smoke flare is mandatory for all Ultras during the paddle leg as there is Open Ocean involved. If you become lost or taken off course you can use your flare to alert safety crew from a large distance. Smoke Flares are available at any boating supplies store. However, if you wish to purchase a flare from us and pick it up at registrations, order online at with a minimum of 2 week s notice to guarantee availability. Flare will come at a cost of $29 each (they are good for paddle training when there is no safety crew also). Safety boats will be monitoring competitors throughout the paddle leg. In an emergency or in need of help, competitors are advised to get in contact with any safety boat on the field. This can be done by: - Raising a paddle high and waving it to grab the attention of officers in the support craft Competitor Information Kalbarri Adventurethon
- If paddle is lost, raise arms as high as possible and wave them to grab the attention of officers in the support craft - Communicating to other paddlers in the race and letting them know of your circumstance, other paddlers are then advised to then communicate the issue to the next support craft they see on course Competitors are strongly advised to keep close and attached to their craft in an emergency. This will make it easier for Safety Officers to locate individuals. If an emergency does occur we advise competitors to keep calm. If there is nothing else you can do to reach help, the best option is to wait, stick close to your craft keep yourself hydrated until our team finds you. There are a number of sandy bays between rocks which are safe to land at in the case of emergency, from there its a matter of alerting our team for evacuation and pick up of your craft. Strong communication is used between our support craft and timing officials ensuring all our competitors are safe. You must use the same paddle craft (and paddler for teams) throughout the course. RUN Competitors run through National Park areas; in order to keep this track in pristine condition, do not leave rubbish along the track. Take your rubbish with you put in the bin at the transition area. Competitors must carry 2 x compressions bandages and it is recommended to have a mobile phone with Race HQ emergency number programmed in. CLEAN GEAR It is important to protect the environment we play in so that we can not only continue to play there, but also our children will be able to. Weeds brought in from other areas have the potential to harm the natural balance of the area. So please read and apply the following advice not only on race day but any time you ride. Ensure all gear and equipment is clean before leaving home. Remove human waste Do not move plant items Don t spread weeds and pests between parks - Always ensure all gear and equipment is clean before a new area Don t spread weed within parks - If travelling through known weed infested areas make an effort to clean shoes / bikes before moving to another section of the park Minimise opportunity for weed spread - Clean down gear and equipment each day De-seed into a bin put the seeds pulled out of clothes / socks / gators/ shoes into a rubbish bag Competitor Information Kalbarri Adventurethon
Definitions Clean free of dried mud and dirt matter, plant seeds or small animals (i.e. ants, insects) Gear and equipment shoes, clothing, bags, gloves, hats, socks, gators, bikes, kayaks OTHER EQUIPMENT Competitors are required to carry on them all equipment that they require such as water, nutrition, spare parts sunscreen and any special medical equipment that they may need. It is also advised that competitors carry mobile phone with Race HQ emergency number programmed in in the event that they become lost or injured. Do not leave rubbish on the course, take it with you! All competitors (including taste of adventurethon and junior competitors) MUST carry water with them. While water is available at checkpoints along the race, for your safety you must have your own water as there is some distance between water points (use a hydration pack, water bottle). It is recommended to consume electrolyte drink in favour of water alone. OUTSIDE SUPPORT This race is a self-supported race, therefore it is required that you carry your own requirements of water and nutrition etc. Competitors receiving outside support (this includes their own drops of water/nutrition prior to the race) from anyone other than race officials will incur a penalty resulting in them being unable to place 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd in their nominated category. Adventurethon Australia provides emergency water stops throughout the course; however these will take up your valuable race time and should not be relied upon. COURSE MAPS All maps and course outlines can be reached through our website Logistics Page. Below are the PDF course outline versions: WEATHER ALTERED COURSES Ultra Adventurethon Enduro Adventurethon Dirty Duathlon Taste of Adventurethon Junior Adventurethon The Paddle can be severely affected by weather and will be modified if the water safety team feels necessary. In this case the direction of the paddle will change to best suit the wind or it may be moved to be entirely in the river. The paddle will likely be shortened by a couple of Kilometres for both Enduro and Ultra (better than dropping it completely right ). PRESENTATIONS Competitor Information Kalbarri Adventurethon
Presentations will be Saturday 3 rd June 5:30 pm on the Foreshore (Race HQ) and will have live music and a licenced area till around 10pm. 1 st and 2 nd and 3 rd place will be presented on the podium with gold, silver and black medallions awarded. Back in 1629, crayfish made home the sunken Batavia shipwreck on the Abrolhos Islands to avoid getting caught. It is said that one of the crayfish got trapped in a treasure chest at the bottom of the wreck during a big storm, causing it to feed on the gold inside this chest. The crayfish then went into hibernation and shed its shell, the new shell grew back- but encrusted with gold and embedded with jewels as it hardened. Finally, one day the Golden Crayfish broke free from the chest and started the hunt for more treasure. Every year pirates and their wenches land on the beaches of Kalbarri, determined to catch the Golden Cray. The locals dress up as pirates and crayfish to celebrate. On Sunday Morning the 4th of June there will be the 16.5km Murchison River Dash and other popular canoe events and the 8km Bigurda Bash Cliff top Run, in the afternoon. There will be loads of other activities so bring the whole family down for some fun!
