B-Fleet Update Mark Van Doren We have had some positive response to the creation of a Keelboat B-Fleet. It seems a number of club members think that this would be a good introduction to racing. Members who would like to participate in B-Fleet racing are not required to own a keelboat as there will be plenty of crewing opportunities available for all interested parties. At least one of the Training Fleet Catalina 22 s should be available to those that have been checked out. To get the B-Fleeters off to a good start, we ll hold two Learn to Race Classes. The first will be on Tuesday, March 27th and then again on Thursday, March 29th. We ll go over the same material in each two-hour session so there s no need to attend both classes. Each class will begin at 6:30pm and will cover some racing basics: How to Start a Race; some of the more relevant Racing Rules of Sailing; and we ll answer any other questions that participants have about racing. The classes won t be a prerequisite for B- Fleet racing. If you miss the classes, you ll still be welcome to come out and race. The Keelboat B-Fleet racing series will follow the Spring Dinghy Series racing schedule, however, the B-Fleet Keelboats will have a separate start from the dinghies. The course and timing of the starts will be adjusted to minimize any sailing conflicts between the dinghy and keelboat fleets. Here is the race schedule for the Keelboat B-Fleet and the Spring Dinghy Series: April 8th --- April 15th --- April 22nd --- May 6th --- May 20th --- June 3rd --- June 10th Racing will begin each Sunday at 1:30 pm. As an added feature, we will attempt to match some of the more experienced CYC skippers with B-Fleet skippers that would like to have someone onboard to help them navigate this new racing adventure. If you would like more information on: This new thing called the Keelboat B-Fleet The introductory classes Participating as a crew The skipper match concept The Spring Race Series in general Please get in touch with me, Mark Van Doren, at 1stvc@concordyachtclub.org In March, we ll start developing a B- Fleet roster. Keep an eye out for additional tweaks to the Keelboat B- Fleet concept in the March Luff Letter. Mark Van Doren CYC 1st Vice Commodore 4
RACE COMMITTEE CLASS 2 Work Hours Mark Van Doren will host the annual Race Committee Class on February 24th at 9:30am in the class room below the back porch, and should run for a couple of hours. Since we're all scheduled for RC duty, the class will be relevant to all of us. The CYC Racing Program can't function without well trained Race Committee members and PRO's. Your attendance is very important to the racing community. Club members will be awarded two work hours for attendance provided that they serve on a Race Committee at some point during the 2018 racing season. If you'd like to attend, please send an to Mark at 1stvc@concordyachtclub.org so he'll know how many to expect. 6 The Winter Keelboat Series Continues! Well, according to the forecasts, Saturday, January 20th, should have been a nice sunny winter day, with winds ranging from 5 to 7 mph. Just what we needed after the cold and snow experienced during the week! But, alas, the wind goddess, (YES, Goddess!) was fickle and didn t want to accommodate! So, the standings remain as- 1st Place Frank Larimer 2nd Place John Tyner 3rd Place Johnny Ballatin 4th Place Mark Van Doren 5th Place James Little 6th Place Chuck Meyer 7th Place Rebecca Bryant, Carol Rech, Jerry delaurentis 8th Place John Storey 9th Place Rod Meryweather 10th Place Erik Lundin 11th Place Mike Cox But, here are a few pictures from the 20th. 7 Sail Camp Needs Volunteers Sail Camp preparations are already underway for Camp needs a lot of support to run smoothly each year, and this year is no exception. We are currently in need of volunteers to handle the following tasks. Contact me if you can help out with any of them. T-shirts. If you ve got an artistic side, you could design our camp t-shirts. We ve got a brand new fleet of boats to celebrate this year, so maybe that sparks some ideas! Distribute bookmarks. Missy Noon has been doing this for years and is finally stepping down. It involves bundling the bookmarks, and delivering them to area schools over the course of a couple of days, usually around spring break. Fundraising. We could use someone with a flair for fundraising to talk to sponsors. Previously, we ve had the most success with product contributions and discounts from local food vendors. Maybe you can think bigger. If you d like to help out, but none of these tasks fit your skills, give me a call. I ve got plenty of jobs to go around. Maybe woodworking? Drone photography? RC boats? Guest speaker in cruising, sailing-related STEM or clean-water environmental? I hope to hear from you soon. Jeff Gamey Sail Camp Director (865) Concordsail@gmail.com 7
Boy Scouts of America, Knoxville (865) Sea Scouts Welcome New Members and Seek Leaders/Advisers Now is a perfect time to kick the can down the road. This is not an exclusive for people in Washington. It s time to register new Sea Scouts! So pass the word among people you know. Membership is open to boys and girls, age 13 & 8 th grade to age 21. Sea Scouts meet on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 PM. Encourage anyone interested to show up and check it out for themselves -- any Sunday. Annual membership is $34 a year (no experience necessary), plus membership is FREE to registered boy scouts, and this club meets weekly all year round, truly the best deal in learning to sail within miles and miles. What could be more heavenly than going to church in the morning and sailing through the symphony of nature in the afternoon? Meeting time changes when school classes are out in the spring to enable better use of the fabulous East Tennessee white-hot Southern summer sun. To be more formal, if we must, there s an Open House on Sunday, February 11 th, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. In anticipation of the coming Open House, crew members spent a recent balmy Sunday afternoon cleaning the cabin on their Helms 27, see photos. In addition, membership in Ship 300 is a way for youth to qualify to compete in international sailing with Sea Scouts from foreign countries, sailing in competition together for a week against the wind and sea. A lifetime memory created. Youth can put that on their resume, while developing a sport to be enjoyed for a lifetime. Plus Sea Scouts go canoeing, overnight cruises, long cruises, and can visit any scout reservation in the country. They re too numerous to mention here. Importantly, Ship 300 seeks additional adult advisers/leaders. No experience needed. Leaders are men and women age 21 and older with an interest in youth. Sea Scouting aims at preparing youth for life with a focus on sailing, seamanship, and maritime heritage. A benefit for a leader s efforts is no one knows how far into eternity teaching will go. For more information contact ship300sails@yahoo.com or telephone George Hubbell at (865) L to R, Ellie Tyner, Emma Lakatosh, and John Walker. When a small group works together, a mundane task becomes fun for all L to R, Cole Smith, Ship Purser Robert Lakatosh, Ian Smith, and Ty Cox, taking a break after working several hours causing the Helms 27 to be ship shape.
Hypothermia Myths And The Truth About Cold Water By Mario Vittone Oct 5, 2017 Soundings Online HERE I was meeting with 40 professional mariners last week to discuss their man-overboard procedures. Since they operated where the water is cold (under 60 degrees most of the year), I asked them my favorite question. If you go overboard in January wearing street clothes when the water is just above 33 degrees, how long until you become hypothermic? After hearing the most common answer, five minutes, from the on-the-water pros, I told them the truth. Most of what you know about hypothermia is wrong. You can t get hypothermic or even mildly hypothermic in under 10 minutes. The average adult can survive over an hour in cold water. And while we are on the subject, you do not lose 80 percent of your body heat through your head. To understand the dangers of cold water, you have to stop thinking of hypothermia and start thinking of the four dangers of accidental cold water immersion. The truth is that cold water kills, but hypothermia is just one way that it does, and it s not the most common way. If you find yourself immersed in cold water, four things happen to your body that you should understand. Cold Shock Response The first phase of cold water immersion is the cold shock response. It is a stage of increased heart rate and blood pressure, uncontrolled gasping and sometimes uncontrolled movement. Lasting anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes, the cold shock response can be deadly all by itself. In fact, of all the people who die in cold water, it is estimated that 20 percent of them die in the first two minutes. They drown, they panic or they take on water in that first uncontrolled gasp. If they have heart problems, the cold shock may trigger a heart attack. Surviving this stage is about getting your breathing under control, realizing it will pass and staying calm. Cold Incapacitation One of the primary reasons given by recreational boaters when asked why they don t wear a life jacket is that they know how to swim. Listen up, Tarzan; I swam for a living for the better part of my adult life, and when the water is cold (under 60 degrees), none of us can swim for very long. The second stage of cold water immersion is called cold incapacitation. Lacking adequate insulation, your body will make its own. Long before your core temperature drops a degree, the veins in your extremities (those things you swim with) will constrict; you will lose your ability to control your hands and the muscles in your arms and legs will just flat-out quit working well enough to keep you above water. Without some form of flotation, and in not more than 30 minutes, the best swimmer among us will drown in cold water. There s no way around it. Without ever experiencing a drop in core temperature, over 50 percent of the people who die in cold water die from drowning following cold incapacitation. 9
Hypothermia Hypothermia can kill, but that only happens in about 15 percent of cold water deaths. You have to have some form of flotation to get hypothermia, and it takes much longer than you think. We are all different in this regard, but I once spent an hour in 44-degree water wearing street clothes, and my core temperature was only down by less than two degrees; I was not clinically hypothermic. It was uncomfortable to be sure, and I wouldn t recommend finding your limit, but it probably would have taken another hour to lose consciousness and an hour after that to cool my core to the point of no return. The body s efforts to keep the core warm vasoconstriction and shivering are surprisingly effective. Shivering and blood shunting to the core are so productive that twenty minutes after jumping in, I had a fever of Circum-Rescue Collapse I lost count of the number of survivors I annoyed in the back of the helicopter because I wouldn t let them move. I had a rule: If they came from a cold water environment, they lay down and stayed down until the doctors in the emergency room said they could stand. It didn t matter to me how good they felt or how warm they thought they were because the final killer of cold water immersion is circum-rescue collapse. Shortly before, during, or after sometimes hours after rescue, victims of cold water immersion pass out, experience ventricular fibrillation or go into full cardiac arrest. Hypothermia does things besides making everything colder. Victims are physiologically different for a while. One of the things that changes is called heart-rate variability. In other words, the heart s ability to speed up and slow down has been affected by the cold. Getting up and moving around requires your heart to pump more blood, and being upright and out of the water is also taxing. Then any number of other factors collide and the heart starts to flutter instead of pump and down you go. Victims of immersion hypothermia are two things: lucky to be alive and fragile. Until everything is warmed again, out of the water and dry is good enough; mobility comes later. If you learned anything new here, hopefully you ll use it to make good decisions when it comes to being safe on and around cold water. Consider smart decisions such as these: 1. When working on deck in cold-water environments (water under 60 degrees), always wear flotation. 2. If you witness a man overboard, getting the life ring directly to that person is critical. Vital. Step one. Must do it. 3. Make certain that your life ring is not just on your vessel, but readily available and not tied to the cradle. 4. When working on deck in cold-water environments, always wear flotation. Didn't I say that already? Well, when I quit reading search reports that end with experienced mariners dying because they thought they understood cold water, I ll come up with better advice. 10 Mario Vittone mariovittone.com/
First In A Series This isn t an endorsement, but I have found quite a few of these recipes, and they looked mighty tasty! And, I just thought the graphics were cute! Never heard of Sailor Jerry Rum, but I guess any old rum would suffice. I d love to know if anyone tries any of the recipes that will be featured in the Luff Letters! Once upon a time there was a famous sea captain. This captain was very successful at what he did for years he guided merchant ships all over the world. Never did stormy seas or pirates get the best of him. He was admired by his crew and fellow captains. However, there was one thing different about this captain. Every morning he went through a strange ritual. He would lock himself in his captain's quarters and open a small safe. In the safe was an envelope with a piece of paper inside. He would stare at the paper for a minute, then lock it back up. After, he would go about his daily duties. For years this went on, and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter from a long lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope. One day the captain died at sea. After laying the captain's body to rest, the first mate led the entire crew into the captains quarters. He opened the safe, got the envelope, opened it and... The first mate turned pale and showed the paper to the others. Four words were on the paper, two on two lines: Port Left, Starboard Right 11
