3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS This year is the 50th anniversary of the Bluenose Regatta; 50 years of some great sailing, some not so great wind but always great friendship and food. I have participated for the past 19 years of my 20 years as a member of HIYC. The very first regatta I watched was the Bluenose. There were participants and as I remember, winds at 18 mph and snowing! It was quite the show. As my family and I sat anchored above the weather mark, in our San Juan 24, Rumrunner, wind blowing and snow flying, it was so exciting to watch that afterwards I knew that I had to find my way onto a boat and compete. In March, I got my wish when Bill and Mandy Hofmeister told me that lifetime member, Don Sherburne needed foredeck crew for the lightning Southern Circuit in St. Petersburg, FL. I flew down and met Don and his wife Biffy and found myself on the water the very next day. The wind blew hard and it was a real eye opener! To this day, all I remember is Don saying, Mike, get that ponytail in the water...yes, I had a 6 inch ponytail that would dip in the water when I was full hiked. Since then, I have not had long hair and it is not as easy for the skipper to tell if you are fully hiked or not; just kidding. You can ALWAYS tell. As you read this, club clean up day is over. I d like to thank everyone, in advance, for giving up your Saturday to come help clean up. A special thanks to Seth Trigg for pressure washing our wood walkway; it looks great and is less slippery; with members like Seth, I know that our Club will be well taken care of for many years to come. 4 This House is your House.. As our membership ebbs and flows, sometimes it's a good idea to remind our members - especially our new members - how our club works. Consider this a primer. Essentially, it's a volunteer club. Everything we do, with few exceptions, we do ourselves. Repairs, maintenance, cleanup, support for each other. With that idea in mind, I'd like to address a few concerns about the use of the clubhouse. First and foremost, please be considerate of your fellow members. Don't leave it to the next person to do what you could have done. If you use the last paper towel, replace the roll. If you use the last piece of toilet tissue, replace the roll. If the trash is full, take it out to the dumpster and replace the trash bag. (Yes, even if you didn't fill it up or leave those nasty scraps in there. Whoever did that is less considerate than you.) No cups or plates? Replenish the supply from the supply room. This is all just common courtesy. Who do you think is going to come behind you and do what you didn't do? New strings of cuss words have been invented to describe some of our less considerate members. I don't think you want to be on the receiving end of that string of words. Paper towels, toilet paper, and other supplies are located in the supply room (conveniently labeled Supplies ) which is not off limits to anybody, even thieves; but, of course, we don't have any of those! I appreciate those of you who have the presence of mind and attitude to recycle. The recycling bins are for plastic bottles and containers (please, no plastic bags - save those for ice) and aluminum, as well as steel cans. Cardboard is welcome, but no dirty pizza boxes, please. Glass is just too dangerous and heavy to deal with and I would ask that if you want to recycle glass, please take it with you. If you have guests, please make them aware of these guidelines. Because I believe in the cause, I usually end up hauling away the recyclables, but anyone is welcome to lend a hand. Again, it's a volunteer club. Still in the kitchen area, where have the dishtowels gone? There is a basket to the right of the ice machine where dirty dishtowels are collected for someone a volunteer to take home, wash, and (this is important) bring back to the club. I try to do this when I can, but since my washing machine is broken half the time, I appreciate anybody who can step up and take care of the dishtowels. In the restrooms, the club provides hand soap in wall-mounted dispensers and, when available, dispensers on the counters. The club has traditionally never provided shower supplies, leaving it to the members to bring the soap and shampoo they prefer. So when the hand soap disappears from the counter, most likely some shower-taker has decided that hand soap is good enough for them to bathe with and you don't need it. Look in the shower stall. And bring out your string of cuss words. This is a unique yacht club no bar, no restaurant, no tennis courts or swimming pool, and no minimum monthly purchase required. 5 Sea Scout News In March our Sea Scouts were approached about assisting with a Boy Scout Camporee to be held at Boxwell Boy Scout Camp the last weekend of September. The request was to teach a bit about boating and the use of semaphore. Semaphore is a method of using flags to communicate over large distances. The following is Kevin s Trip report. Kevin is our Boatswain which is the youth leader. I would call this trip a success, because we learned many new skills that will be beneficial to us in our scouting careers, while also generating interest in sea scouting. While entering the cove San Juan ran aground about one hundred and fifty yards off shore from explorer island, Coyote, the North American 23 was soon to follow. From this experience the scouts that were on board were able to learn how to free a grounded vessel. On the trip to Boxwell Scout Reservation from Harbor Island Yacht Club, our home harbor, the scouts were able to learn the basics of towing another vessel. They also learned some navigation basics such as identifying the location of a buoy as seen on the chart, as well as learning to identify day marks seen on shore. There were many successes that I observed on this trip. The scouts showed great team work in completing tasks, and readying the event. They did a great job at problem solving such as when we lost a handheld radio in the water and the scouts began to use their phones to conduct the semaphore activity. The scouts did a great job interacting and adapting to the situations that happened on shore, for example the crew that was on the boat was ready and willing to decipher messages sent from shore to ship by the boy scout troops and cub scouts that were on land. One thing that I noticed that the scouts could work on is organization, when the semaphore activity started we were delayed, because the list of words could not be located. There was also a large mess created on the boats, mostly by snacks and trash being all around. Communication could have been better when knowing who would and wouldn t be on board the boat. It also would have been good to have been better prepared with certain materials such as line for the flags on the mast, as well as line for the flag pole in the harbor. I think that this trip was a phenomenal leaning experience, as well as a test of skills on many levels, there were a lot of firsts for many scouts that were on this trip, and I believe that everyone learned, and took away something from this trip, even those who arrived late, and left early. From what I ve seen on this trip, this team works great together. October 10 th our Scouts sailed our Pearson 30 Triad in the JAM fleet of the McDougall Regatta. Congratulations to Paul, James and Nathaniel who sailed an excellent race. But we did have a problem. That being that the first place boat of each fleet gets a bottle of scotch. And it is illegal to give alcohol to a minor. Thus as Paul was skipper for the race he took home a wonderful Harbor Island Yacht Club cup. Then at the next Sea Scout meeting I presented him with a wonderful bottle of sparkling grape juice to enjoy. Andy Griswold With a LOT of assistance by Brian Laidlaw.

9 BLUENOSE L The Bluenose L (50 th ) will be hosted at Harbor Island Yacht Club by our own Lightning Fleet 262 throughout the weekend of November 6-8, The events begin with registration and practice races on Friday afternoon followed by a free cocktail buffet for competitors on Friday evening. Bill Hofmeister is the regatta PRO and races are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Competitors returning from the race course on Saturday afternoon visit the Beer Boat moored in the harbor. Saturday night Jim MIlliman and Judy Netherton s volunteer posse are once again preparing the weekend s highlight HIYC s famous steak dinner. Lunch and dinner tickets, as well as tee shirts (Jan Mattix s shirt graphic is illustrated here), are on sale at registration on Friday and Saturday. All members are welcome. The Bluenose Regatta has been the last regatta of the national racing circuit for Lightnings for fifty years. It has attracted the top sailors in the country and past winners have included World Champions and National Champions and class legends including Tom Allen Senior, Bruce Goldsmith, Greg Fisher, David Starck and Allen Terhune. Bob Lovett was a founding member of HIYC and a passionate Lightning racer. The memorial trophy that bears his name is awarded to the team from HIYC placing highest in the standings.

INVITATION Harbor Island Yacht Club and Lightning Fleet #262 cordially invite you and your crew to attend the 50 th Bluenose Regatta, November 6-8, 2015 on Old Hickory Lake in Nashville, Tennessee. 2. RULES 2.1. The regatta will be governed by the Rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) Changes to the following RRS sections will be made for this regatta: 29 (Recalls), 33 (Course Change), 42.3 (c) (Propulsion Exceptions), 44.2 (Two Turns Penalty), 61.3 (Protest Time Limit), 62.1(a) (Redress), A4.1, A4.2, A7 and A8 (Scoring). 3. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - The Sailing Instructions will be available at registration. A draft is available at CLASSES, ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 4.1. The regatta will be open to all Lightnings as defined by the ILCA Skippers must meet all class membership requirements and their boats must meet all measurement requirements Participants must enter by completing registration at the table in the HIYC clubhouse before the Competitors' Meeting. 5. FEES 5.1. The Regatta registration fee is $65 (includes free tee shirt). Additional shirts cost $ Lunches will be available for purchase. The cost is $9 per person per day A steak dinner will be served on Saturday evening at the HIYC Clubhouse. The cost is $20 per person. 6. SCHEDULE - The official time will be kept by the Race Committee Clock above the coffee maker in the clubhouse ashore and by the PRO's watch (synchronized to the RC Clock) on the Race Committee Boat on the water. THE SITE AND RACING AREA 8.1. Harbor Island Yacht Club will be the site of all shore-side activities Race courses will be set outside the harbor on Old Hickory Lake and may intersect the navigational channel. Commercial traffic (barges) and deep-draft craft in the channel have right-of-way over sailboats and must be treated with utmost respect. When a boat sailing under these rules meets a vessel that is not, the rules of Part 2 (When Boats

Any boat impeding the passage of a right-of-way vessel is subject to protest and disqualification by the Race Committee or Protest Committee The location of the course will depend on the wind direction and speed. The "Upper Course" is upstream of the harbor entrance (northeast, or to the right as you sail out of the harbor, avoiding the shoal near Duck Island). The "Lower Course" is downstream of the harbor entrance (southwest, or to the left as you leave the harbor, staying in the harbor entrance marked by red and green secondary channel marks). 9. RACING 9.1. The racing will consist of buoy courses One race will constitute a series There will be no warning signals after 12:25 p.m. Sunday 10. SCORING Each boat finishing in a race and not thereafter retiring or being disqualified will be scored points equal to her finishing place. DNC, DNS, DNF and RAF score point equal to one more than the number of boats entered in the series. OCS, DNE, DGM and DSQ score points equal to two more than the number of boats entered in the series. RDG scores the number of points equal to the finishing position awarded her after a hearing of request for redress Each boat's series score will be the sum of her scores for all races, excluding her worst score if six races are completed Boats which tie in a single race shall score points equal to the best position involved. The position(s) immediately following that shall remain vacant. (This modifies RRS A7) When there is a tie on total points between two or more boats at the end of a series, the tie will be broken in favor of the boat or boats with the most first places...and when a tie remains, the most second places...and so on. When a tie still remains, it shall be broken in favor of the boat which beats the other(s) in the last untied race of the series. (All races, including those excluded in calculating total scores in accordance with 10.2 above, will be considered for the purpose of breaking ties). (This modifies RRS A8). 11. PRIZES - Prizes will be awarded to the top five boats in the overall standings. 12. DIRECTIONS From I-40 Exit #221 The Hermitage / Hwy 45 North. Continue on ramp down to stop lights. Pass Andrew Jackson WAY and the Exxon Station. Turn right on Andrew Jackson PARKWAY by the BP Station. (The next turn you make will be Harbor Drive (a little over 6 miles).) Cross Lebanon Road (major intersection with BP and Texaco.). The road name will change to Saundersville Road. When you see the lake, you are close. After passing Shutes Branch Recreational Area, look for the next road on left. Turn left onto Harbor Island. HIYC located on the right after the gate and causeway. The code to open the causeway gate is #9090 (be sure to begin by entering the pound sign, #). 13. LODGING AND SITTERS - Nearby motels are listed at the regatta website at (Call or Bruce Richards at (615) ( rich4302@comcast.net ), if you need housing or child care. 14. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY - Competitors in this event are participating entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. Competitors agree that the race organizers (organizing authority, race committee, protest committee, host club, sponsors, or any other organization or official) shall not be responsible for damage to any boat or other property or the injury to any competitor, including death, sustained as a result of participation in this event. As an inducement to the race organizers to produce the regatta, each competitor agrees that by participating in this event each competitor is deemed to have waived all claims against and released the race organizers from any and all liability associated with such competitor s participation in this event to the fullest extent permitted by law and is deemed to have warranted that he has obtained this same release of the race organizers by each crew member. 15. Participants must enter by completing registration at the table in the HIYC clubhouse before the Competitors' Meeting. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located on the south window of the clubhouse. There will be a Competitors' Meeting at 0900 Saturday in the clubhouse. CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - Any change in the sailing instructions will be posted by 0900 each day, except that any change in the schedule of races for Sunday will be posted by 1600 on Saturday. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE Signals made ashore will be displayed from the committee boat at the dock. Code flag "AP", the Answering Pennant, with two cannons, means "The race is postponed". The warning signal will be made not less than 30 minutes after "AP" is lowered (accompanied by one cannon when lowered). Code flag "L" means that a change in sailing instructions has been posted on the official notice board. SCHEDULE OF RACES The warning signal for the first race Saturday will be at 1025 with more races to follow if conditions permit. The warning signal for the first race Sunday will be at 0925 with other races to follow if conditions permit. There will be no warning signals after 1225 Sunday. The official time will be kept by the Race Committee Clock above the coffee maker in the clubhouse ashore and by the PRO's watch (synchronized to the RC Clock) on the Race Committee boat on the water. COURSE I Start,1,1A,3(A),1,1A,3(A),Finish THE COURSE The diagram at the right illustrates the I course, the order in which the marks are to be rounded and the side on which each mark is to be left. This will be the course for each race. On the "I" course there will be a windward mark and an offset mark approximately 5-10 boat lengths away, both to be rounded to port. At the leeward end of the course there will be a "gate" between two marks approximately 6-8 boat lengths apart. Boats must first pass between these marks (through the "gate") from the direction of the windward marks and can round either mark to go upwind. Marks 3 and 3A may not be in the positions illustrated at the start. The starting mark may be moved to position 3 or 3A after the start to achieve the course configuration illustrated. Mark 1 may serve as the finishing mark for windward finishes. The course will not be shortened to fewer than three legs. MARKS - Marks of the course will be orange spheres.

13 THE START Races will be started in accordance with RRS 26. The starting line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the Race Committee Boat at the starboard end and the course side of the port end starting mark. A boat starting later than five minutes after her starting signal will be scored DNS. This changes RRS A4.1. RECALLS - Individual recalls will be signaled in accordance with RRS The Race Committee will also make every effort to hail the sail number(s) of any boat(s) starting prematurely. Failure of the Race Committee to hail or failure of a boat to hear her hail shall not be grounds for redress. This changes RRS 29 and 62.1(a). CHANGE OF COURSE If the moved mark (or the moved finish line) is repositioned more than 20 degrees, the change shall be signaled in accordance with RRS 33. If the moved mark (or the moved finish line) is repositioned less than 20 degrees, the change shall not be signaled. This changes RRS 33. THE FINISH - The finishing line will be between the staff displaying an orange flag on the Committee Boat and the course side of the finishing mark. TIME LIMIT - If the first boat does not round the first mark within forty minutes or complete the race in two hours, the race shall be abandoned. SCORING Each boat finishing in a race and not thereafter retiring or being disqualified will be scored points equal to her finishing place. DNC, DNS, DNF and RAF score point equal to one more than the number of boats entered in the series. OCS, DNE, DGM and DSQ score points equal to two more than the number of boats entered in the series. RDG scores the number of points equal to the finishing position awarded her after a hearing of request for redress. Each boat's series score will be the sum of her scores for all races, excluding her worst score if six races are completed. Boats which tie in a single race shall score points equal to the best position involved. The position(s) immediately following that shall remain vacant. (This modifies RRS A7). PROTESTS Protests shall be filed in accordance with RRS 61. Protest Filing Time will begin when the Race Committee Boat docks and will end one hour later. These times will be posted on the Official Notice Board. Protests shall be written on forms found in the "Protest Box" on the bookshelf and delivered to the Protest Committee Chairperson before the end of "Protest Filing Time." Protest notices will be posted within 30 minutes of the end of "Protest Filing Time" to inform competitors where and when there will be a hearing to which they are parties or in which they are named as witnesses. Protests will be heard in approximately the order of receipt, as soon as possible. A Race Committee or Protest Committee taking action under RRS 60.2 or 60.3 must do so within one half hour (rather than the time allowed by RRS 61.3) after any other protests are heard. Decisions of the Protest Committee may be appealed to the ILCA Executive Committee. ALTERNATIVE PENALTIES - A boat that may have broken a rule of Part 2 while racing under spinnaker may exonerate herself by sailing well clear of other boats promptly, dousing her spinnaker (head below gooseneck), making one turn including a tack and a gybe, and then resetting her spinnaker. This changes RRS SAFETY We encourage competitors to wear PFDs at all times. However, the decision to wear or not to wear a PFD is solely the responsibility of each competitor. A boat which retires from a race shall make all reasonable effort to notify the Race Committee of her retirement on the water. If that is not possible, she should notify the Race Committee immediately upon its return to shore. PROPULSION - The following modifies RRS 42.3(c): On a free leg of the course, when surfing or planing is possible, the boat's crew may, in order to initiate surfing or planing, pump the sheet, but not the guy, controlling any sail, but only once for each wave or gust of wind. When the mainsail is pumped, only that part of the sheet between the crew member handling the sheet and the first block on the boom shall be used. CONDITIONS - The ILCA Executive Committee, the ILCA Measurement Committee or their designated representatives (in that order) shall rule on a boat's eligibility in all instances. PRIZES - Prizes will be awarded to the top five boats in the overall standings.

The International Lightning Crew (racing): 3 Get The Best Of Both Worlds Without Compromising Either The Lightning, a 19-foot trailerable centerboard sloop, was originally designed by Sparkman & Stephens as an affordable family day-sailor and racing boat. She has evolved into one of the most popular and competitive one-design racing classes in the world. Awarded ISAF International Class status, the Lightning is sailed in more than 13 countries and in the Pan American Games, and the class provides a professionally-managed association that is among the largest in all of one-design sailing. The Lightning's rig is simple, but offers sophisticated sail shape controls. The hull features a unique hard chine design that combines the stability that provides sail-carrying power, with flat bottom sections that promote planing. The International Lightning Class Association protects the boat's design and licenses custom and private builders to build boats under its administration. 16 *** REGATTA CENTRAL *** NOTICE OF RACE (Abbreviated) The Arnold Nye Team Race November 14, 2015 INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Arnold Nye Team Race, November 14, 2015 on Old Hickory Lake, TN. HISTORY- Shortly after Arnold's death in 1973 while Jack Caldwell was Commodore, Jack & his wife Betty were talking with Ross & Irene Bryan, considering what the club might do in Arnold s memory. Irene's experience with team events in golf competition gave her the idea. Ross and the Caldwells all approved. Team Racing was born at HIYC. As an architect, Arnold Nye designed numerous buildings in Nashville and elsewhere. These include a number of homes, four of which are on Harbor Island. He was a cosmopolitan New Englander with a love of racing and especially race organization. He was the first "permanent" race committee chairman, greatly improving the quality of race management at HIYC. His personal trademark was to wear shorts in the coldest weather, the badge of a truly weatherproof seaman. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - The Sailing Instructions will be available at registration. CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event. Heavy handicap class A: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings of 145 or less, Spinnaker assumed. Heavy handicap class B: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings 146 and greater. Spinnaker assumed, but may sail without spinnaker and take a 12 second allowance. The decision to sail without spinnaker remains in effect for the curent year. Light handicap class: Displacement below 4999, Spinnaker assumed. JAM class: Jib and Main only. The Regatta Committee may combine or split classes at its sole discretion. TEAMS The Regatta Committee, in its sole discretion, will select teams of three or four members comprised of boats and skippers with similar aggregate PHRF ratings and past performance characteristics. Teams will be designated by a color and each boat must display a ribbon of that color from its backstay (supplied at the skippers meeting). There will be a single start for all boats in each race. If each team has 3 boats, all 3 boats' scores will count toward that team's overall point total for the race. The racing area is between mile Cumberland River and mile 227 on Old Hickory Lake. The Distance Course will begin at a starting line between mile 220 and mile 225. The course will be further described in the Sailing Instructions. ON-THE-WATER COMMUNICATIONS VHF radio channel 68 will be used by the Race Committee for warnings and communications to the competitors while on the water. 17 *** REGATTA CENTRAL *** NOTICE OF RACE (Abbreviated) The Beesley 50K Regatta November 21, 2015 INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the, November 21, 2015 on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN. HISTORY - Fred and Anne Beesley joined HIYC in They have been an integral part of the club, and together have worked on almost every regatta, committee and in every elected position. They have been competitive racers in Lasers, Lightnings and are a "force to reckon with" in their J-32, Blue Heron. Fred has served for many years as our club treasurer and you can always be assured that Anne will be out on the water racing in all regattas. Their names can be found on every perpetual trophy and Club award. HIYC has honored Fred and Anne by putting their name on the Fall 50k: a regatta that requires endurance, adept boat handling, great tactical skills, and a love of sailing! SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - The Sailing Instructions will be available at registration. A draft is available at CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event. Heavy handicap class A: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings of 145 or less, Spinn assumed Heavy handicap. class B: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings 146 and greater. Spinnaker assumed, but may sail without spinnaker and take a 12 second allowance. The decision to sail without spinnaker remains in effect for the current year. Light handicap class. Displacement below 4999, Spinnaker assumed. JAM class. Jib and Main only. The Regatta Committee may combine or split classes at its sole discretion. 19 NO- TICE of We got it good! Welcome Aboard! Chris and April Flynn moved to Brentwood, Tennessee four years ago from Medford, New Jersey with their 3 children. Chris is employed at Performance Food Group and recently celebrated his 29 th year. April is a math tutor at Sunset Middle School and Nolensville Elementary School. Christopher, a junior at Ravenwood High School, plays hockey and lacrosse. John, a freshman also at Ravenwood, plays lacrosse. Elizabeth is in fifth grade at Sunset Elementary School and loves crafting. The entire family is looking forward to once again spending their weekends on the water. HIYC welcomes the Flynns!
