4 A unique historical centre Conwy Castle was the third of Edward I s great castles. Built in 1283 on a rocky site at the mouth of the River Conwy and against a background of wooded hills, it is an impressive fortress, with massive battlemented walls and eight commanding drum towers. It is also one of the best preserved of all Britain s medieval castles. At Conwy Visitor s Centre in Rosehill Street, a 20 minute film In search of Conwy takes you through the town s 800 year history. An exhibition also recreates scenes from the past. Conwy is a fascinating walled town of quaint narrow streets. Among the few ancient houses that still survive are Aberconwy, owned by the National Trust, a 14th century house used for exhibitions showing the history of the town, and Plas Mawr, one of the finest remaining examples of an Elizabethan country house. On a smaller scale the town boasts Britain s smallest house, a Victorian fisherman s cottage. Measuring 6 in width and standing 10 high; its two rooms are linked by a vertical staircase. The river Conwy is spanned by three bridges, the most impressive being Telford s suspension bridge built in This was superseded by the road bridge of 1958 and Robert Stephenson s splendid railway bridge from The river also offers some interesting activities. The water bus Queen Victoria sails 7 days a week from Easter to late October (see notices on the quay or ring for further details). River trips offer spectacular views of the Conwy Valley, whilst from the estuary, Puffin Island, Anglesey and the Great Orme. The area also has several yacht clubs which organise regattas and offshore races; these include the Conwy Yacht Club, Victoria Buildings, Station Road, Deganwy, Tel: ; The Royal Anglesey Yacht Club, Beaumaris, Anglesey, Tel: ; The North Wales Cruising Association, Lower High Street, Aberconwy, Tel: ; and the Irish Sea Offshore Racing Association (I.S.O.R.A.) 119 Chelwood Avenue, Liverpool L16 2LL. Further afield, the seaside resorts of the North Wales coast such as Prestatyn, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno and Bangor offer extra attractions whilst inland, the Snowdonia National Park is within easy reach. The area is renowned for walking and mountaineering, and several of the old slate quarries are now tourist attractions. Llandudno is situated on the Creuddyn Peninsula, in Conwy North Wales. It s location close to the Snowdonia Tram ride up the Great Orme National Park makes it ideal for touring Snowdonia and North Wales. Known as the Queen of the Welsh resorts Llandudno is a charming Victorian seaside resort between the two limestone headlands of the Great Orme and the Little Orme. Take a ride on the unique Victorian Tramway to the top of the Great Orme and visit the Great Orme Country Park, play a round of Golf, or take an invigorating stroll along the Victorian Pier. 5 Travel Services Travel to and from both Conwy and Deganwy Marinas is easy. Road links to the towns are excellent, with a road leading directly to the marina from the main A55 trunk road, which in turn, links directly into the national UK motorway system. Sea and air links too are good, and ensure easy access from all parts of the globe. BUSES There is a regular bus service from Conwy and the surrounding areas. COACHES There are Express Coach services to Aberconwy s coastal resorts from London, the Midlands and the North. RAIL There are Intercity services from London, Birmingham and Manchester to the region s main railway station at Llandudno Junction, with connecting services to Conwy. AIR TRAVEL The nearest airports are Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester. Furthermore, with the recent major improvements to the A55 north coast road, Manchester Airport is now only a 90 minute drive away. FERRIES The A55 road links Conwy directly with the ferry terminal at Holyhead, approximately 45 miles away. The A55 and UK motorway system also make the terminal at Liverpool accessible from where both B&L and P&O Ferries operate. Conwy Castle Crown copyright (2013) Visit Wales 3

6 Cruising from Conwy & Deganwy WITH THE MOUNTAINS OF SNOWDONIA NA- TIONAL PARK AS A BACKDROP, BOTH CONWY & DEGANWY MARINAS ARE IDEAL BASES FROM WHICH TO CRUISE THE PICTURESQUE CRUISING GROUNDS OF THE NORTH WALES COAST. With sufficient rise of tide, shallow draught vessels can explore the Conwy River as far inland as Tal-y- Cafn, where you can secure alongside for lunch. In the opposite direction there are the bays and unspoilt coves of Anglesey, along with the beautiful Menai Straits to be explored. After a pleasant day s sail, what could be better than to spend the evening in one of the many local anchorages, sampling the nearby island hospitality. Anglesey is a delightful cruising ground in itself, with a sheltered anchorage always nearby. Further afield, there is the beautiful Llyn Peninsula, Bardsey and the Tudwells Islands, whilst Pilot s Cove, Porth Dinllaen and Aberdaron are attractive ports of call on passage to Pwllheli or Barmouth. The breathtaking coastline of Ireland is only 85 miles away. The ports of Dublin, Malahide, Carlingford and Strangford Lough are just a few of the many delightful harbours along the east coast. And Irish hospitality is second to none! ADMIRALTY CHARTS Holyhead to Great Ormes Head 1977 Great Ormes Head to Liverpool 1978 Menai Straits 1464 Caernarfon Bay 1970 Cardigan Bay (Northern) 1971 Approaches to Holyhead 1413 Irish Sea (Western part) 1411 Irish Sea (Eastern part) 1826 PUBLICATIONS Cruising Anglesey and the North Wales coast The Isle of Man is another popular destination, and port of call on passage from Strangford Lough or the west coast of Scotland. In settled conditions, this too is a delightful cruising ground in itself, and the Port St. Mary Yacht Club offers a warm welcome to visiting yachtsmen. The island of Anglesey is a favourite destination for yachts based at Conwy & Deganwy Marinas. The channel to sea has 1.8m of water at low water neaps, which means vessels with a draught of 1.5m can navigate the channel at any state of neap tides and with a few hours restriction around LW. on spring tides. From the Fairway buoy marking the entrance to Conwy, steer 300 magnetic for approximately 3 miles and you ll reach Puffin Island, a pleasant anchorage and home for seals, cormorants, puffins and a wide variety of bird life. Having reached this charming spot, the only problem is to decide whether to turn to port or starboard! THE MENAI STRAITS From Puffin Island, a westerly course will take you through the picturesque Menai Straits. Navigation requires care, but follow the buoys through the channel and you ll have the option of picking up a mooring at Beaumaris, Bangor or Menai Bridge. Pass under Telford s suspension bridge and through the Swellies at around slack water, and you can continue through the Straits. To starboard, you will find the superb building of Plas Newydd, home of the Marquis of Anglesey. Now run by the National Trust, this is an attractive and interesting spot, well worth a visit. Further on you will find Port Dinorwic, another popular port of call. Secure alongside in the lock, the outer harbour or on a swinging mooring. Continuing southward, brings you to Caernarfon, with its castle standing proudly on the shore, overlooking the glistening sands of Abermenai which extend for miles. 4 Quay Marina s CONWY & DEGANWY Yearbook 2017

7 At the south west entrance to the Straits is Caernarfon Bar, where you ll find Newborough Warren and one of the favourite anchorages on Anglesey - Pilot s Cove at Llanddwyn Island. Over Caernarfon bar and you can follow the coastline of the Llyn Peninsula to the charming anchorage of Porth Dinllaen and on to Bardsey Island. THE WEST COAST Turn northward and you ll find yourself sailing along the breathtaking west coast, with its dramatic cliffs and caves. There are pleasant anchorages at Rhos Colyn, Rhosneigr and Trearddur Bay. Around the stacks you find the breakwater marking the entrance to Holyhead where the Sailing Club offers a warm welcome to visiting yachtsmen. THE NORTH COAST Leaving Holyhead, again sailing north, you will round Carmel Head before turning eastwards along the north coast. This sleepy coastline offers a number of interesting bays, and the ruined brickworks at Porth Wen, Cemlyn Bay, Cemaes Bay and Bull Bay are all worth exploring, as too is the fishing port of Amlwch and the bay of Porth Eilian. THE EAST COAST Round the headland of Point Lynas and you are sailing along the east coast back towards Puffin Island and Conwy. Along this green and rolling stretch of coastline you have the option of picking up a mooring or anchoring in any one of a number of delightful bays - Fresh Water Bay, the sandy beaches of Traeth Llugwy and Traeth yr Ora, Moelfre, Traeth Bychan, Red Wharf Bay and White Beach. THE SWELLIES Your timing for passage through the Swellies should be around slack water, which as a rule is 2 hours before high water Liverpool. At this time the Swellies is a mill pond, and with good pilotage notes you will wonder what all the fuss is about! Before attempting the Swellies at low water slack or at night, we recommend you familiarise yourself with a number of daylight passages at high water slack. 11 Both Conwy & Deganwy Marinas are situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty and make fine bases from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Visitors will undoubtedly enjoy the outstanding panoramic sea views over the town of Llandudno from the Great Orme. This well known landmark has been developed as a tourist attraction in recent years and now boasts many places of interest, particularly suitable for families with young children. These include such leisure facilities as cable cars, a dry ski slope with bar and restaurant, trams and a historic copper mine. As a prominent seaside resort, Llandudno itself offers a wide variety of leisure activities. The miniature village of Portmeirion is situated on the secluded Llyn peninsula. The brainchild of architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, this model village became famous following the television series, The Prisoner broadcast during the 1960s. The village comprises an unusual mix of eighteenth century cottages and Italianate buildings set around a central piazza. The village is open all year round, with reduced admission fees between the winter months November to March. Finally, situated above the River Conwy are the Bodnant Gardens. With their breathtaking views across the valley towards the Snowdon Range, Bodnant Gardens are reputed to be amongst the finest in the World. 17 Marina sill gate operations VESSEL ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS VIA TIDAL FLAP GATE Observe traffic lights - red x 3: do not proceed green x 2, white x 1: safe to proceed Do not navigate in the vicinity of the flap gate until the green x 2, white x 1 light is lit. When entering and leaving the marina, keep to a sensible slow speed and keep right in accordance with normal navigational practice. Observe sill depth gauges. In the event of engine failure, contact the marina on vhf channel 80. the marina will advise other boats of your vessels condition by radio and if possible render assistance. In the event that you miss tidal access to the marina, secure to holding pontoons. If you have any questions regarding the safe use of the gate entrance, contact the marina office. Observe vessels entering or leaving the marina in opposite direction to your intended course. where practically possible judge the cross point to be away from the gate aperture. POINTS TO NOTE 1. The channel changes frequently. Please note take extra care in the region of the jetty as it is an obstruction which protrudes approximately 5m and is unlit. 2. The Scabs form a bar between No. 10 and No. 12 buoys. 3. Round the perch light and number 11 buoy. 4. Until skippers are familiar with the channel, they are advised to navigate the channel within 2 hours either side of HW. As a guide, if the concrete footing on the base of the Perch Light or Sandbanks outside the river entrance is covered, vessels drawing up to 2m should be able to enter in safety. The minimum depth of water at LW neaps is 1.8m throughout the passage. Please note there is a speed limit of 10 knots in the river from the Perch Light to Cymryd Point. 5. In 2003 Admiralty chart 1463 Conwy Bay and approaches was introduced and should be referred to when navigating the Conwy area. 18 Environmental support Quay Marinas fully endorse the environmental awarenesss initiatives set out by The Green Blue. Our marinas encourage and promote good practice amongst our bertholders, by raising awareness about the potential environmental impacts of recreational boating on our coastal and inland waterways. We offer information to our bertholders to maintain and use their craft and equipment in an environmentally responsible fashion, with special reference to:- Oil and Fuel Cleaning and Maintenance Anti-fouling and Marine Paints Waste Management Resource Efficiency Effects on Wildlife 16 Quay Marina s CONWY & DEGANWY Yearbook 2017

19 A better environment Quay Marinas Ltd are keen to encourage and promote environmental awareness amongst customers of its marinas. Please consider the needs of the environment for the good of all. BE AWARE OF WILDLIFE Shoreline habitats support a huge variety of species that can be vulnerable to disturbance. Reduce your speed and check your wash in sensitive areas. DON T BE A NOISY NEIGHBOUR Roaring engines, flapping halyards, loud music can disturb other users of the marina and nearby residents. Do what you can to reduce noise pollution to a minimum. OVERBOARD IS OUT Litter spoils the appearance of the marina and harms the environment. Bag your rubbish and dispose of it in the marina bins. It is an offence under the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution by Garbage) Regulations 1988 to dump rubbish in a river or at sea. DON T FLUSH Untreated sewage from vessels is unsightly and a health hazard to other water users. Don t pollute the marina environment use the shore facilities whenever possible. MAINTAIN YOUR MOTOR By regularly servicing your mechanical equipment your vessels efficiency will be optimised. This will save engine emissions, engine noise and reduce your fuel bills. DON T POLLUTE THE WATER Drips and spillages have a serious cumulative effect on the marine environment. Portable fuel tanks and spare fuel containers should be filled away from the waters edge. Don t overfill tanks. Provide drip trays and absorbent material. Dispose of used engine oil within the waste oil tanks in the marina. PAINT A PRETTY PICTURE Take care with anti-fouling. Ensure that anti-fouling scrapings are swept up and disposed of. Try not to allow them to enter the water. Where possible use products that are biodegradable, phosphate and chlorine free. RECYCLE IF YOU CAN Please Recycle when you can and use the nearest recycling facility. The marina maintains facilities for recycling waste oil and batteries in the boatyard and glass, plastic, paper and cans in both compounds. Please use the correct bins and if in doubt please ask the team for help. Security KEEP YOUR BOAT SECURE Never leave anything valuable on display, however small and insignificant it may seem. Thieves steal first and think about value later. Don t leave anything loose in the cockpit or on deck. Don t leave your engine key in the ignition - always take it with you. Keep your boat keys separate from your engine keys. Always keep your boat locked when no-one is on board, even for a short time. Use strong padlocks or rimlocks on all your hatches, entry points and cockpit lockers. IMPROVE YOUR SECURITY Constantly check and improve the security on your boat. It s a good idea to fit an alarm and use a visible sticker to say that one is fitted. Make sure your cockpit lockers can be properly locked, and check that your main hatch and fore-hatch are strong. Also think about having a strongbox down below. If you don t think something is secure, get it fixed. All environment photos: Gail Johnson

32 Conway Yacht Club One of the best kept secrets in Conwy is the fact that boats from Conway Yacht Club race a course around Conwy Bay just about every weekend from May to October. We actually start in February on the weekends when there is a suitable tide and enough light. We welcome anyone with a sailing vessel, no matter what experience you have, to come and join us and give yacht racing a go. It may look fierce and competitive on a catamaran in San Francisco Bay, but we take a gentler low key approach to things. One of our objectives for CYC is to get more cruising boats out on the water, to make our racing even more fun and competitive. We have introduced our own handicapping system which takes into account a skipper s capabilities as well as the capabilities of his/her boat. Handicaps are reviewed regularly during the season so that everyone gets a chance to win, and there is a real incentive to take part and improve. This year we hope to start the season early during February with some informal Saturday races, starting out in the bay rather than in the river. We hope Saturday s will make it easier for those of you who are here purely for the weekend. If you are even thinking about taking part then please drop us a mail. We will make it an easy process and introduction for you. Our sailing program for 2017 will be posted on our website. Please take a look at it. If there is an event that you would like to join then drop into the Clubhouse in Deganwy (evenings are best, especially Friday, where you will receive a warm welcome).
