3 Program Overview The Cedar Point Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is overseen by the CPYC Junior Sailing Advisory Board, Program Chair and a Member of the CPYC Board of Governors. The day-to-day program is run by the Junior Program Director who has responsibility for safety oversight, regatta paperwork and management of our Coaches. The Head Coach works with the Program Director to manage the Coaching staff. The program has specific goals for each level of student, and the Coaches work within a curriculum designed to achieve specific skill goals while being flexible to the needs of the students and the vagaries of the weather. The curriculum is based on the basic instructional curriculum developed by the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound (JSA) and the U.S. Sailing Association (USSA). If you would like to learn more about what a sailing curriculum looks like, please visit the JSA website, The morning program is entirely Optimist sailors broken into classes for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, depending on skill and experience. Coaches will evaluate sailors during the first few days and will recommend changes, if necessary. Each group is assigned to specific Coaches and is supported by its own powerboat. The afternoon program has five classes of boats: Racing Optimists (approval of coaches required), Pixels, Club420s, Lasers and Laser Radials. Coaches are assigned as appropriate for the participation level in each class. If fewer than 3 boats are registered for a particular class, the program reserves the right to decide not to offer that class. Parent volunteerism is an important part of the program. It helps CPYC provide a safer, more enjoyable program and it gives parents an opportunity to learn more about their child s sailing experience. It is expected that parents will volunteer for at least one event during the summer, and one POD shift for each child enrolled in the program. Sign up will be done through a Google Group Calendar and will be a required part of the registration process. There are suitable jobs for both sailors and non-sailors, and members as well as non-members share this responsibility. Information about the Program can be found via the CPYC website, (click on the Juniors tab at top of page). During the summer, race results and program news will be posted on the Junior page. Please read this handbook even if your child has been in the program before as some rules, policies, and/or procedures may change from year to year. CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 3

4 Getting Started Drop-off and pickup times Morning program: Optimists Children should be at the club no later than 8:30 AM but no earlier than 8:20 AM. Please do not drop off your child earlier than this, as there is no one at the Club to supervise him/her. All children must all be checked in with the Parent of the Day (POD). Our program starts promptly at 8:30 AM. Late arrivals are very disruptive and unfair to the Coaches and other sailors. It is within the Coaches discretion to leave the dock when the group is ready and leave any seriously tardy sailors behind with the Parent of the Day. If this happens, the parent will be called to pick their child up. The morning program ends at 12:00. Morning sailors must be picked up at that time. They are welcome to bring their lunches or use our Snack Bar, but juniors must be supervised by parents or guardians at all times after 12:00. (For safety reasons, it is required that your child is signed in and out daily). Please also make sure, when you arrive to pick up your child that the Parent of the Day (POD) on duty is aware that you have taken your child, even if you plan to stay at CPYC for lunch with your child. There is no supervision for your child after 12:00. CPYC and their staff are not responsible for the safety of your children after this time. Afternoon program: Racing Optimist/Pixels/Club420s/Lasers & Laser Radials Participants should be at the club by 12:30 so that they can rig their boats before the session starts at 1:00. Pickup time is 5:00. Again, children and families are very welcome to come for lunch before the PM class, but children must be supervised. Swim Test Every student will be required to pass a swim test, which will be held no later than the first day of the program. It will be conducted in the waters off the Club, or a suitable alternate location. Sailors jump into the water, wearing their life jacket (PFD), and swim to a mark about fifteen yards away and then swim back, all while still wearing the life jacket. Then the student takes off their life jacket (on their own) in the water, and treads water for three minutes. After three minutes, they must put back on their life jacket while in the water. Personal Equipment Each participant should come each day with the following: CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 4

5 U.S. Coast Guard approved vest-type life jacket of proper size (also known as a PFD). NO CHILD WILL BE ALLOWED TO GO SAILING OR ALLOWED ON THE DOCKS WITHOUT A PFD. Hat or visor Sunglasses Sunscreen of at least SPF 15 and appropriate t-shirt for sun protection Whistle attached to the PFD Closed toe water shoes that can get wet and keep feet safe Change of clothes Raingear (when necessary) All items should be clearly marked with the last name in indelible, water-resistant block letters. A Lost and Found box is located in the junior room. Each sailor is to arrive with the proper gear to sail each day. We race rain or shine. If a sailor is not prepared to sail, a parent will be called to pick their child up. Safety SAFETY IS THE HIGHEST PRIORITY OF THE JUNIOR PROGRAM. With that aim in mind, here are a few guidelines: Adhere to the drop-off and pickup times. If there is an issue, please call the Club and ask to speak either to the Junior Program Director or the Head Coach. Do not rely on leaving voic messages as no arrangements can b e a s s u r e d u n l e s s y o u s p e a k w i t h a l i v e p e r s o n. Please call and leave a message if your child will be absent from class unexpectedly. If there is a planned absence, please let the Junior Program Director or Head Coach know in advance. Children are not allowed on the docks (or near the water) without a PFD. Common sense dictates that children are to avoid hitting other boats or the dock. This is part of learning boat handling skills but also helps keep other children safe. If you need to speak with the Junior Program Director or Head Coach, please make an appointment to do so outside the times when instruction is taking place. Skateboards, scooters or similar items are NOT ALLOWED on the CPYC premises. They are a serious danger to both your child and others. The parking lots and traffic circles are busy and not suited for play activities. Such items brought to sailing class will be confiscated. Junior sailors are required to wear closed-toe shoes to sailing class. We have had numerous cases where children come in flip flops or without shoes and this presents a dangerous situation, as there are barnacles and other sharp objects to be found off the launch ramp. Juniors without proper footwear will be left with the Parent of the Day and a parent contacted to pick up the child from the club. Crocs are not an acceptable form of sailing footwear. 6 Protect your child from the sun. Please apply a waterproof sunscreen before the start of class. FAQ (frequently asked questions) What happens if something breaks on my child s boat? It is not the responsibility of the Coaches to fix boats. If something breaks, it is your responsibility to get it fixed. This applies equally to boats chartered from CPYC and to privately owned boats. We recommend that parents develop a familiarity with the boat sailed by their child. What happens if my child is involved in an incident that results in required repairs to another boat (or other property)? If your child was at fault in the incident, you are liable for expenses associated with any damage incurred or for replacement of any lost or damaged boat equipment. This applies if your child is sailing his/her own boat, a borrowed boat, or a CPYCowned boat, or whether the damaged boat is a private boat or one owned by CPYC. If your child is involved in an incident resulting in damage to boats or property, he or she should immediately notify a Coach and initiate an Incident Report which details the accident. On the water, there are clear rules of right-of-way but it is the responsibility of every skipper to avoid collisions even when in the right. Can I go along in the powerboats to watch instruction? No. Carrying anyone other than instructional staff in the powerboats constitutes carrying passengers for hire under the law which our Coaches are not licensed to do, nor is it permitted by our insurance. Can my child sail his/her boat when the program is not operating? If you are a CPYC member, yes, but you are responsible for all supervision. If you charter a boat from CPYC (members and non-members), the chartered boat is available to your child only during the hours of the program, while sailing in JSA sponsored events and for other events for which prior written consent has been obtained from CPYC in accordance with the Optimist/420/Pixel/Laser Charter Agreement.. If your child owns his/her own boat and you are not a member of CPYC, your child may sail at the club only during the hours of the program or hosted junior events. We have a long history of junior program families joining the club to enjoy the wider benefits of club membership, so please contact the Governor for Junior Sailing or the Program Chair if you would like to become a member. Are there opportunities for my child to compete outside the program? JSA sponsors a series of regattas in which sailors with appropriate levels of experience can compete. 7 for information on regattas and then review the section in this guidebook on Regattas. How do I know if my child is ready for regattas? The Head Coach can advise you as to whether your child is ready to participate in regattas. That said, it is the responsibility of the family, not the Coach, to initiate the regatta signup process by speaking to the Head Coach. The decision of whether a child is ready for a particular event is to be determined by the Head Coach whose decision will be final. Do I have to pay the JSA Family fee even if my child is not competing in regattas? Yes. JSA performs a host of services to support junior sailing around Long Island Sound. These services include: Program management seminars and workshops Coach training Curriculum development Standard setting for sportsmanship and safety Interaction with class and national sailing organizations on behalf of programs Promotion of interclub cooperation and competition Do I have to complete the JSA Waiver on the JSA website even if my child is not competing in regattas? Yes. The waiver you must complete on the JSA website is our only source of medical and emergency contact information for your child. To do so, please go to and follow the instructions to complete the on-line waiver. This waiver must be completed before your child will be allowed to sail. What is the typical size of the Optimist program and ratio of Coach to sailors? We have a number of Optimist sections so that children are sailing with others of the same level of skill. Our aim is to have a maximum of 7 children per Coach. In addition, we usually have experienced afternoon sailors who volunteer their services in the morning to assist the Coaches (Junior Coaches). How do I pay for the snack bar if I am not a member of CPYC? There is a form you can fill out which establishes a temporary account with the Club on your behalf. All non-members are required to have a credit card on file for the privilege of establishing a temporary account. The club bookkeeper will charge the credit card on file on a regular basis for all charges incurred. CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 7

8 Class membership All JSA regattas are sanctioned by the national class organization associated with the class(es) of boats sailed. These class organizations oversee and develop the class in areas as diverse as measurement, competition, and participation in global class organizations. As such, it is important for your child to be an official class member. The program does not handle these registrations. Parents are responsible for registering their child with the class organization which can be done via the class website (which can be located by clicking on the Boat Classes tab on the JSA website. Class membership is a requirement for participation in JSA championship regattas. This does not apply to club-owned 420s and Pixels. JSA Waiver Database The JSA Waiver completed on-line through JSA website is our only source of medical and emergency contact information for us on your children, therefore, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU COMPLETE THE WAIVER FOR EACH CHILD YOU ENROLL IN THE PROGRAM. Please go to and follow the instructions to complete the on-line waiver. Parent of the Day (POD) CPYC s Parent of the Day (POD) program is a key part of our Junior Sailing Program. Parents volunteer for POD duty. As POD, the parent is a critical part of the safety plan for the program. If you are POD in the morning program, please arrive by 8:15AM and expect to stay until 12:30. If you are POD in the afternoon, please arrive by 12:30 to get the book from the morning POD. You are expected to stay until the program ends at 5:00, and all sailors have been checked out for the day. Babysitters and housekeepers may not serve your POD duty. The duties of the POD include: Taking attendance and handling dismissal Supervising children when ashore o Before the program begins o During program for bathroom breaks, etc. o After the sailing program is over while waiting for pickup Assisting the staff when needed in emergencies, etc. If you cannot serve on your day, you are required to find a replacement. Volunteering In a typical summer, the CPYC junior program hosts one or more regattas on behalf of JSA. Hosting regattas is a major effort and parent volunteers are essential. This year we will be hosting the Laser/420 Race Week, estimated to bring over 200 junior sailors to CPYC. We will also be hosting the Opti Open, and the Opti Green Fleet Regatta. Volunteering is a great way to participate alongside your child and to get a feel for what your child will encounter as he/she progresses in sailing. Several volunteers for key assignments are selected prior to the season, CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 8

9 but many other opportunities are made available. You are required to volunteer, and committing to a volunteer assignment is required for registration. Please contact the Program Chair for questions about volunteer assignments. A typical day Upon arrival, sailors rig their boats and get them ready to sail. Sailors meet with their Coach to prepare for the day. Most days, some sort of brief on-land lesson is given before going sailing Sailors and Coaches proceed to their boats and sail to a designated area for the day s sailing instruction. Sailors and Coaches return to the dock and boats are put away. Coaches typically give a wrap-up talk at the club house immediately after de-rigging to summarize the day and to ensure orderly dismissal. Junior Room This room, located on the first floor of the Clubhouse, is the general meeting place for Coaches and participants. It is open each day of the program between 8:15 AM and 5:00 PM. There is a bulletin board on the outside of the Clubhouse next to the entry to the Junior Room on which important notices and information about Junior Sailing will be posted. The Junior Room includes offices for the instructional staff, a lost and found box, and instructional tools (such as a whiteboard). It is to be used for general instruction. It is not to be used to store personal items such as clothing and equipment and participants are expected to pick up after themselves after using the room. In addition, participants may not hang out in the room without a Coach present. Our Junior Program Director s office is located upstairs in the Workshop /Junior Office Building. Juniors are not allowed in that building due to safety regulations. There is a lost and found bin located in the Junior Room. Items remaining in the lost and found box at the end of the program will be discarded or donated. Snack Bar There is a snack bar at CPYC that serves sandwiches, burgers, and other light fare. All junior sailors and parents are welcome to eat at the snack bar regardless of whether their families are members, after the AM session, prior to the PM session or during junior regattas hosted by CPYC. Children must be supervised. Please note that at other times the club facilities may not be used by nonmembers. Payment is either by cash or charge to your CPYC account. Nonmembers can establish an account by completing the necessary application and leaving a credit card number on file. All purchases will be regularly charged by the club bookkeeper. Non-members are not allowed use of the upper deck and beaches. CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 9

10 Awards At the end of every season, there is an awards banquet to which boys are asked to wear collar shirts and tie and girls are asked to wear skirts or dresses. At this event, sailors receive trophies in recognition of special achievement during the summer. These awards are given in each sailing class and may include trophies for the club championships, best crew, most improved, best kept boat (the shipshape award), most spirited, and so on. All morning sailors are recognized with some memento for their participation. There are also a number of club junior perpetual trophies, which are awarded at this time: Burton E. Schryver Trophy awarded to the best all-around Junior sailor Housel Trophy awarded to the Junior exhibiting the best sportsmanship and seamanship Florens de Bevoise Trophy awarded to the CPYC Junior Champion Brent Humphreyson Trophy awarded to the outstanding crew Charles N. Pollak Trophy awarded to the most outstanding Optimist sailor Program Rules and Policies CPYC Age, Weight, and Experience Policies OPTIMIST: Children must weigh at least 50 pounds to participate in the Optimist program. BEGINNER CLUB420: Children must be at least JSA 13 to sail in the beginner Club420 program either as crew or skipper. RACING CLUB420 SKIPPER: Children must be at least JSA 14, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have at least two years of competitive sailing experience skippering Optimists, Pixels or comparable boats to skipper a Club420 in the program. RACING CLUB420 CREW: Children must be at least JSA 14, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have at least two years of competitive sailing experience in Optimists, Pixels or comparable boats to crew in a Club420 in the program. LASER: Children must be at least JSA 14, weigh at least 130 pounds (110 for Laser Radial), and have at least two years of competitive sailing experience skippering Optimists, Pixels, Club420s or comparable boats to sail a Laser in the program. PIXELS: Children must be at least JSA 11 to compete in Novice events and JSA 12 for JSA Open events and have combined 2 person crew weight of at least 190 pounds (there is no minimum crew weight for 3 person crews). A child that wants to sail in a class for which he/she does not meet age, weight, and/or experience standards must have approval from the Junior Program Director and the Head Coach. During the course of the program, however, the program reserves the right to withdraw approval for a child sailing in a class for which he/she does not meet one or more minimums if it is determined that the child is unable to sail safely, which shall be deemed to include demonstrated inability, on a CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 10

11 regular basis, to pay adequate attention or follow instructions. In the event such withdrawal of approval occurs during the program, no refunds will be made. Certain away regattas have specific eligibility requirements which can be found in the event s Notice of Race which are all on the JSA website Regattas page. Fee policies Regatta fees are additional; please see section on regattas. Withdrawal of a child prior to the beginning of the program will be subject to a 15% charge. No refunds will be made after the start of the program. A child enrolled for the 4-week program may continue for the full 8 weeks with payment of the full fees if space permits. Payment for damage Our fee structure does not include provision for coverage of damage to or loss of boats and equipment because of accident or carelessness. Responsibility for the damages caused by sailors must be assumed by the participant s family and payment for such damages will be strictly enforced. Parents are responsible for any damage caused by their child to club-owned or other boats or personal property. If you are chartering a club-owned boat, please read the Charter Agreement carefully, as it contains provisions regarding responsibility for damages. All incidents must be reported immediately to the Junior Program Director and Head Coach at which time an Incident Report form should also be completed. Rules for participants and parents The rules of good sportsmanship as well as the rules of the Club are in effect at all times. The Junior Program Director and the Head Coach have authority to reprimand participants. The Junior Program Director will participate with the Head Coach and the concerned parents in resolving serious or continuing misconduct. Specific rules and a disciplinary procedure pertaining to the conduct of the Program are detailed below. General Rules (based on CPYC House Rules) It is expected that the conduct of every member and non-member parent and student will be such as to maintain the proper decorum of the Club. Boisterous or rowdy conduct or violation of established rules and regulations will subject the member or non-member to disciplinary procedures listed below. The use of alcohol or any other illegal substance by participants or Coach at any time during a Cedar Point Junior activity or during any JSA-sanctioned event is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate expulsion from the Program. Non-member families may use the Club Snack Bar after the morning session, before the afternoon session or during hosted junior events, but otherwise cannot use Club facilities. Please note, that the upstairs deck is reserved for members only. Please speak to one of us if you are interested in club membership. All CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 11

12 parents must assume full responsibility for supervision of their children when they are not participating in a scheduled sailing class and must pick up their children promptly at the conclusion of their class session. CPYC does not provide child supervision service for any times outside the specific program hours. Members and non-members will be responsible for their own property. They are also responsible for the general care and protection of Club property. Damage to Club property caused by a member or non-member or any of their possessions (boats, automobiles, trailers, etc.) will be repaired promptly by the Club at the expense of the member or non-member. Any suggestions or complaints concerning the employees, rules and regulations, or operation of the Club should be submitted to the House Governor in writing. Items pertaining to the Junior Program should be submitted to the Governor for Junior Sailing in writing. Non-member use of chartered boats (CPYC boats or other charter), is only allowed at CPYC during class hours or during sanctioned junior sailing events. Non-member use of the CPYC facility is only permitted during your scheduled class hours. Basin area Swimming or water skiing is not permitted in the basin or the entrance channel. Basin and channel speed shall not exceed 5 miles per hour and boats in the basin shall not produce a wake. Reckless or careless operation of any vessel is not permitted. Sailing in the basin or entrance channel is not permitted except for the entrance and exit of non-powered sailboats or as directed by the Head Coach. Boats are specifically prohibited from being left in the water when not in use. Docks Children under 10 years of age are not allowed on the docks unless accompanied by an adult. Each participant shall wear a USCG approved Personal Floatation Device (PFD) at all times while near the water, on a boat, or on the dock. There will be no swimming or fishing from the docks. The annual swim test is an exception to this rule. All boats, gear, and other articles belonging to members or non-members will be kept off the docks and clear of dock approaches. All boats must be properly stored in the drystall area or in racks. CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 12

13 Only minor repairs and ordinary maintenance on member or non-member boats is permitted without specific approval by the Board of Governors. No member or non-member shall leave a boat overnight at the rigging or main dock, rafted to another boat or between any two boats, or at any other location in the basin other than an assigned slip unless specifically instructed to do so by the Club Manager. Drystall Area Hoists: Members and non-members must abide by the Club s hoist rules. Hoists are to be operated at the member s or non-member s own risk. Unsupervised children and children under the age of 12 are not allowed to operate the hoists. Motor vehicles may enter the drystall area only to deliver or remove a boat. No other motor vehicle traffic or parking is allowed in the drystall area. The ramp is to be used only for the launching and hauling of boats. Participants in the Junior Program may store their boats on racks or in spaces assigned by the Space Allocation Committee or as directed by the Head Coach, free of charge during the term of the Junior Program. All boats must be removed on the last day of the program, unless owned by a club member and arrangements made with club staff. Boats must be secured in their rack or tied to their trailer which in turn must be securely tied to cement blocks. Club-owned power boats Junior Program parents acting as event volunteers may not operate Club-owned power boats unless they have a State of Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate, have completed the Club powerboat operation program, and have approval of the Club Manager. Parents may not accompany Coaches on Club-owned power boats. Junior Program participants may not be transported in Club-owned power boats, except in cases where safety dictates otherwise. Privately owned vessels Participants may not use privately owned power boats during the time of instruction. Parents may observe, but are not permitted to interfere with, on-water instruction. Other Parking is not allowed in the drystall area. CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 13

14 Notice of overnight parking should be given to the Club Manager. No parking will be allowed on the road. Children may not use the upper deck unless accompanied by a member parent. No person in bathing suits or men without shirts will be allowed on the upper deck All furniture must remain in the Club House. No one is allowed to sit on the upper deck railing. Disciplinary Procedures A Coach may initiate disciplinary procedures if a child or parent interferes with the learning, safety, or conduct of the Junior Program to the potential detriment of him/herself, others, equipment, or facilities. Offenders and/or their children shall be subject to the following actions in ascending order. The initial action may start at any level depending on the gravity of the situation. 1. Discussion with Coach in charge at time of infraction and/or notification of parents. 2. Conference with Head Coach and notification of parents. 3. Dismissal from class for remainder of day. Parents will be called and instructed to pick up their child immediately. 4. Conference with the Junior Program Director, Head Coach, parents, and student. 5. Suspension from class for one week by the Governor for Junior Sailing with no refund of fees. 6. Dismissal from program for remainder of summer by the Governor for Junior Sailing with no refund of fees. Member parents are also subject to disciplinary actions stipulated in the Articles of Association and By-Laws. Under no circumstances will Coaches conduct physical punishment. Physical restraint will not be condoned unless necessary to protect the life, health, or safety of a participant or Coach. General Policies The following general policies have been established to serve as a guide to parents, students, and Coaches in achieving the objectives and goals of the Junior Sailing Program. Safety of students, Coaches, and property is our highest priority. The Junior Program will be conducted in a fashion to minimize the exposures to loss of, or injury to, persons or property. The Junior Program Director and the Club Manager have final authority on matters of safety. The Club encourages the private ownership of boats for use in the Program, as it feels this is an excellent way to enhance the learning experience. We understand, however, that boat ownership may not be right for every family, particularly in boats sailed by two people. CPYC owns a limited number of CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 14

15 Optimists, Pixels and Club420s for charter to participants in the Program. Use of club trailers are for CPYC chartered boats only. The CPYC Junior Sailing Advisory Board is responsible for the development of the overall objectives, goals, and policy guidelines governing the Program. The Junior Program Director, under the direction of the Board, is responsible for the development of the Program and Coaches curriculum. The parents of each sailor are responsible for arriving on time and with the required equipment, including a seaworthy boat. Parents who have questions concerning the day-to-day operation and scheduling of the Program should contact the Junior Program Director. Questions relating to the overall objectives and policies governing conduct of the program should be directed to the Program Chair or to the Governor for Junior Sailing. Instructional sessions will normally be held as scheduled, regardless of weather conditions. When weather conditions make on-the-water activities impractical, instruction will take place on land. Regattas Participation in JSA or other interclub regattas is at the discretion of the Head Coach. Skippers and crews who wish to participate will be approved in accordance with the following criteria: Individual willingness and ability to care for boats and the equipment. Age group and weight specifications recommended by the JSA Performance and sportsmanship in inter- and intra-club competition Fees for individual JSA regattas must be paid for each participant in advance. Since late registrations will not be accepted by most host clubs, regatta registration deadlines will be strictly adhered to. No refund will be made for a regatta fee after the club announced deadline for such event is past. Getting to Regattas All transportation to and from regattas of both participants and boats is the responsibility of parents. It is the responsibility of the parent to check the JSA website and refer to the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for each regatta their child will participate in. These notices include important information that every sailor and parent is responsible for before the regatta. There will be a Coach at every regatta for which registration was handled by the Program, but parents are responsible for helping their child get their boat in and out of the water and for staying until the Coach arrives to take responsibility for the child. Coaches may not tie boats to cars or trailers due to liability concerns. CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 15

16 Trailering of Boats on Club-owned Trailers and Boat Insurance CPYC owns a multi-boat trailer for transporting club-owned 420s and Pixels to regattas and a multi-boat Laser trailer which may be used for transporting privately owned Lasers. Use of the club trailers must be arranged in advance with our Club Manager and Junior Program Director. Privately owned or outside chartered boats may use club trailers (if available) for a fee. Once you have made arrangements with our Club Manager and Junior Program Director for a particular day and time, the Club Manager will unlock the trailer and provide you with the license plate and registration. Because of the heavy expected use of the 420/Pixel trailer by sailors in these 2 classes this summer, the trailer may not be left at regatta site, nor may it be used for transporting privately owned 420s or Pixels. Boat delivery to regattas must be completed, boats placed on club dollies and the 420/Pixel trailer returned immediately to CPYC, to ensure that other charter families also are able to deliver their boats to the same event or to another venue on the same day (i.e. 420s go to Noroton YC for Districts and Pixels go to Districts same day at Norwalk YC, etc.) Club-owned boats are covered for property damage by the Club s insurance, however, please be aware that once a driver attaches a trailer to his or her vehicle, the driver is responsible for liability (personal injury/death) caused while towing. Therefore, we strongly urge you to contact your insurance company before the start of the racing season to discuss this activity to ensure that you have adequate liability/umbrella coverage for this added risk exposure. Although many homeowners policies cover loss or damage to small boats without being separately scheduled, we recommend boat-owners consult their insurance company to learn about coverage terms. Many sailors often find it preferable to purchase a separate marine policy to cover their one-design boats. Such policies can be purchased for a very reasonable cost through US Sailing s one-design coverage program run by The Gowrie Group. JSA age and weight policies for participation in JSA regattas OPTIMISTS: A sailor's age on the first day of an event will determine eligibility and fleet assignment o Participants 10 and under race in White fleet o Participants 11 and 12 race in Blue fleet o Participants 13 through 15 race in Red fleet o Green fleet regattas are open to beginner Optimist sailors JSA age 15 and under who have not competed in any Red, Blue, or White fleet regattas and who have not won three or more trophies in Green fleet competition. 17 Participants must be JSA age and have combined 2 person crew weight of at least 190 pounds (there is no minimum crew weight for 3 person crews). A few Novice events are open to JSA age 11 sailors. CLUB420s: Boats have 2 person crew. Participants must be JSA age and the combined crew weight must be greater than 220 pounds. Waivers are sometimes made but are at the discretion of the hosting yacht club (e.g., Larchmont Race Week has restrictive waiver policies).junior 420s may be JSA age 13. LASERS: Participants must be JSA age Minimum weight is 130 pounds for Lasers and 110 pounds for Laser Radial. BIG BOATS: Participants must be JSA age 14-18, must have successfully completed the current year JSA Navigation Test and attended the current year JSA Safety at Sea seminar. There is an additional fee for the Big Boat Program. JSA Regatta Signup Procedure All JSA-sponsored regatta signups are done through the CPYC Program so that we can ensure that appropriate Coach support is assigned for the regatta. Before the start of the program, if you have a child in the afternoon program, you will be asked to pre-pay all regatta entries. At the Kickoff Dinner, families with children in the afternoon program will be given a letter indicating the regattas we assume your child will attend (except for Champs which is handled later in the season). The letter will also contain deadlines by which you will need to inform us in writing that your child does NOT plan to attend a particular event (which will NOT be the deadline specified in the regatta NOR). Once past our stated club deadline for a specific regatta, the fee for that regatta will not be refunded even if your sailor does not go. For families with children in the morning program and for first year afternoon sailors, there will be a similar letter for sign-up for individual regattas. Again, payment must be made in advance for all regatta entries and refunds will not be given in the event your sailor does not go to the regatta. 18 Each regatta has a Notice of Race (NOR) which provides details such as date, times, fee, etc. The NORs are generally downloadable from the JSA website, but if it is not yet available, ask the Head Coach for a copy. Please get in the habit of printing out the NOR and Sailing Instructions (SIs) (collectively know as the Race Documents ) both of which will always be available through the JSA website Regattas page. It is an excellent idea to read through the Race Documents and make sure that your sailor is familiar with them, as well, before participating in any event. The Race Documents will answer almost any question you may have, such as: Is lunch provided? What time do we need to be there? When do I pick up my child (they will almost always say No race will be started after X PM, add an hour for that last race and you will have rough idea of when the children will be in for the day. Add an hour minimum for boat de-rigging.) The Race Documents will also contain important info about the specifics of racing, meetings and other requirements for that particular event which your child will need to understand. Non-JSA Regattas and Clinics While many CPYC Junior Sailors attend regattas and clinics sponsored by organizations outside of JSA (e.g., Opti New Englands), please note that CPYC is not involved in the sign-up process, nor is CPYC obliged to send a Coach to these events. Discipline at Regattas Junior sailors who swear at, intimidate, or harass anyone, including teammates, on or off the water may be protested under U.S. Sailing RRS, Rule 69, or disciplined by the regatta committee. Junior sailors who steal or borrow, without permission, anything that does not belong to them may be disciplined by the regatta committee, expelled by the regatta by the regatta committee, or brought to the attention of the local police. Junior sailors who use controlled substances may be disciplined by the regatta committee, expelled by the regatta by the regatta committee, or brought to the attention of the local police. Navigation Course Junior sailors JSA age wishing to advance their navigation skills and/or take part in the Big Boat Program will have the opportunity to enroll in a navigation course taught at CPYC. Interested sailors should notify the Head Coach. Big Boat Program Junior sailors JSA age may participate in our Big Boat Program which is run in addition to the regular afternoon racing program. These sailors get a chance to form a team and race a keel boat in the foot range under careful guidance of our big boat Coach and adult advisers. It is quite different than the usual double or single-handed junior racing experience. Participants receive navigation instruction, take the JSA Navigation Test and attend the JSA Safety at Sea Seminar. The Big Boat Program establishes a practice schedule which may include some club big CPYC Junior Sailing Program Handbook 18

19 boat racing. The team also takes part in several JSA sponsored big boat events against junior teams from other LI Sound clubs, culminating in the prestigious dual finale: Dorade Trophy and Beach Point Overnight Race. The Dorade Trophy is a one day series of around the buoys races and the Beach Point Overnight Race is an approximately 65 mile distance event. The program is popular both as a social activity and as an advanced test of sailing skills, since the juniors are required to handle all aspects of steering, sail handling and navigation. Participation in the Big Boat Program is an additional fee. Other Racing Opportunities CPYC has 8 different classes of racing boats from feet to choose from all with skippers eager for new crew. Many of our juniors have enjoyed extending their racing experiences by crewing on V-15s, big boats and other one-design boats. If a participant is interested in racing at the Club outside the junior program, he/she should speak to the Governor for Junior Sailing or the Program Chair. In addition, there will be one or two informal gatherings where juniors will have the opportunity to race in one of our fleets and enjoy meeting and socializing with other CPYC sailors. The dates, and more details will be posted on the Junior page of the CPYC website Who s Who (and how to contact them) The Junior Sailing Program is conducted under the guidance of the CPYC Junior Sailing Advisory Board. The Co-Chairs of the Program are appointed by the Board of Governors and are monitored by the Governor for Junior Sailing. The Club staff support the Junior Program and are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Clubhouse, docks, and grounds and enforcement of House rules. The Club Manager has authority over the instructional staff regarding safety matters.
