1 2017 Oceanside Yacht Club (760) Junior Learn-To-Sail Program and Application Forms Introduction The OYC Junior Learn-to-Sail Program develops knowledgeable and capable youth sailors and instills in them a passion for the sport of sailing. Students learn to sail and have a lot of fun doing it! Basic sailing skills are incorporated with fun activities, such as sailing to the west basin sand bar, picnics, racing, capture the flag, and double-handed sailing. Through a fun atmosphere, the program focuses on solid sailing skills, seamanship, sportsmanship, water safety, and racing skills. Young sailors learn these useful skills and experience a wonderful sport that they can enjoy throughout their lives. The OYC Junior Learn-to-Sail Program serves all of Oceanside Harbor and surrounding North San Diego County communities. Program Overview OYC offers several two-week beginner and intermediate sessions and a one-week advanced session. Students may sign up for multiple sessions as long as he or she qualifies for the experience level desired. The program is open to individuals from age eight to seventeen. Participants are not required to be members of Oceanside Yacht Club. Sailing instruction is done in Sabots and more advanced boats. Life jackets are worn at all times while on the water. Three skill levels are available. One skill level is offered per session. Students will be initially assigned to the skill level requested. If, after being observed by OYC instructors, that level is deemed inappropriate, the instructors will contact you and reassign your child to a more appropriate level. When a student s skill improves such that he or she is ready for the next level, the student will be advanced accordingly. Level 1 Beginner is designed for individuals who have little or no previous sailing experience. This level is taught in Naples Sabots. It is common for a student to take the Beginner Level more than once. Students will learn to captain their own boat on the water while under supervision. Basic sailing instruction includes boat nomenclature, knots, safety, boat rigging/de-rigging and ocean awareness, while providing the young sailor with confidence in boat handling abilities. Morning calm winds sometimes necessitate alternate, land based activities and games in lieu of sailing for beginners. Level 2 Intermediate is designed for individuals who have acquired basic skills and are ready to progress to more advanced concepts. Level 2 is taught in Naples Sabots and some students will be introduced as crew in more advanced boats. Students learn more advanced boating knowledge and prepare for an advanced class. Basic navigation and racing rules will be taught with continued emphasis on small boat handling and safety. Intermediate sailors will have the chance to compete in in-harbor racing. Completion of the beginning level course, or equivalent instruction, is a prerequisite for this class. Intermediate students are encouraged to participate in OYC s Thirsty Thursday race series held during summer evenings and other Sabot races such as the Yearley, Liniment, and Poinsettia regattas. Level 3 Advanced is designed for individuals who have acquired intermediate skills and are ready to progress to advanced concepts. Level 3 will include Naples Sabots and more advanced boats. 1

2 In addition to refining skills learned in the intermediate level, students will learn advanced racing tactics, sail in a more complex boat and learn effective skipper-crew team skills. Advanced students are encouraged to participate in OYC s Thirsty Thursday race series held during summer evenings and other Sabot races such as the Yearley, Liniment, and Poinsettia regattas. Schedule: The program runs from mid-june through mid-august with no class on July 4th. Refer to the application for session dates. Beginner classes (two weeks long) are held Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. Intermediate classes are two weeks long (1:30-4:00) and the advanced class is one week long (9:00-2:30). Expectations: All intermediate juniors should have a Naples Sabot, with all necessary gear and rigging. Ten Sabots are available for summer charter please note reservation request on application. All juniors should have their own Coast Guard approved PFD (life jacket). Vest type III recommended. There are life jackets available for those who don't have them. All juniors must pass a swim test the first day of the program. Things to Bring Sunscreen Hat Sunglasses Lunch in a seagull proof container, e.g. a lunchbox. (no paper or plastic bags) Coast Guard approved PFD (life jacket), type III Water-proof watch (optional) Towel Swimsuit Change of Clothes Water Footwear (no bare feet) Things not to Bring Valuables Items subject to damage in a salt water environment Gaming devices Weapons Policy Requirements: Discipline: If the instructor determines that a junior is unable to maintain an appropriate level of Corinthian behavior and/or safe conduct, parents may be contacted. That junior may be asked to leave for the day or remainder of the session(s) and no fees will be returned. Pre- and Post-care services: OYC does not intend to offer pre- and post-care services. However, a parent/guardian will be assessed a $25.00 fee when a student is not picked up by a parent/guardian within 30 minutes following class thereby causing an instructor to stay overtime or interfering with a subsequent class. Sabots Availability and Fee: Participants may reserve an OYC Sabot at no additional charge. A junior may bring his/her own Sabot and receive a $30 reduction in a session fee. Weight limitations: For the Junior Learn-to-Sail program, Sabots are limited to 175 pounds. Junior participants who weigh above this limit may be eligible to sail in a different boat with permission of the instructor. Cancellations and refunds: Class sessions may be cancelled due to severe weather or other unforeseeable event. Refunds are not given for cancellations. Refunds are not given for a junior who withdraws from a class unless there is an available applicant on the waiting list. 2

3 Oceanside Yacht Club (760) PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT The sailing course you are about to begin is an exciting and demanding challenge but you need to be aware of what will be involved and be willing to study and practice to achieve success. Swim Test A swim test, which is required of all students, consists of swimming a lap at the OYC guest dock, treading water, and entering a Sabot from the water in sailing clothing and footwear. Registration Space availability, first-come first-serve registration, and student s qualifications determine course admittance. The attached program application and medical and emergency information form must be completed and signed by you or your parent/guardian (if you are a minor) and turned in no later than Thursday of the week prior to the class start. Daily Preparation You will be required to provide a life jacket (vest type), which should be Coast Guard approved, the proper size for your weight and build, and be form fitting and comfortable, as you will be wearing it at all times during the course. Put your name on it with waterproof ink. Proper footwear will also be worn at all times, both on land and on the water. Bring a change of clothes, a towel, swimsuit, water, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, lunch in a seagull proof container, and water-proof watch (optional). Agreement A I assume full responsibility for loss or damage, excepting loss or damage covered by insurance that may come to any person. boat, sailboard, equipment, pier, float, or other property used in conjunction with this course as the result of improper use, negligence, violation of the rules, and other acts of sailors, or other representatives of the school, instructional program or host location in connection herewith. I accept that the sport of sailing and the conduct of this course entail and are subject to certain inherent risks and assume all risks on land and on the water of participation in this program. I further agree to hold the school, instructional program or host location, US Sailing, and their representatives harmless for personal injuries and/ or property damage. Agreement B I understand the contents of this statement and agree to see to it that my kid adheres to the program rules. I agree to assume the obligation for the expenses of repair and/ or replacement of program equipment that is attributable to my kid's reckless or irresponsible behavior.
