1 Dedication Youth sailing is something that is important to me. It gives me great pleasure to see young people, of all capabilities, enjoying the sport that has given me so much. I am a member of two great yacht clubs; St. Francis and San Francisco, and work with both of their foundations to help young people pursue their goals. The Belvedere Cove Foundation, The St. Francis Yacht Club Foundation and Cayard Sailing have underwritten the cost of producing this book so that the proceeds from the sale this book will go entirely to our future. 4 FORWARD The Black Pearl sailed the oceans of the world in the years of 2005 and She was a pirate ship. In fact, she was the ship of the Pirates of the Caribbean. She was black, white and red, and bore the skull and crossbones in abundance. She roamed the seas in search of treasure, bounty and glory. She was sleek and silent, able to creep up on her prey without them noticing. In a phrase, she was a weapon, just what a pirate ship should be. At 70 feet in length, with a mast of over 100 feet in height and 7,000 square feet of sail, she was capable of speeds of 40 knots. Her best day s run was 541 nautical miles. Sailing the seas as a crewmember on a ship of this type is a tiring and dangerous occupation. With just ten crew onboard, the men were divided into two watches of four, plus the Captain and Navigator standing their own watch. With just four on deck at times, The Pearl was a real handful. The decks were often awash, and with her speed, all who crewed her knew that a misstep could lead to falling overboard, a place from which there would be no return alive. Additionally, there are hazards in the sea, hazards that could sink a ship like The Pearl. Icebergs, whales and drifting debris could easily put a hole in a boat like The Pearl, especially at the speeds she traveled. A sinking in a remote part of the world, such as the Southern Ocean with its two degree water, would likely be a death sentence for the crew. The Black Pearl hailed from Isla de Muerta, a little known island in Anaheim, California. She was the pride of the Walt Disney Company, and she was the real life sailing vessel of the famous film, Pirates of the Caribbean. The treasure she hunted was the prize for being first to circumnavigate the world in a sailing race known as the Volvo Ocean Race. The Volvo Ocean Race was one of the biggest challenges this author has ever faced. The Pirates of the Caribbean project started very late. Last in of the all the competitors, in fact. The Black Pearl was launched on September 4 th, 2005 just 60 days before the race began. Her crews were professional athletes, amongst the best sailors in the world. Four of the crew were past winners of the Round the World Race, two were America s Cup winners, and several were Olympians. They represented seven different countries. This book is dedicated to the crew of The Black Pearl, for their courage, dedication, tenacity and compassion. 5

7 About this Book This book is written as a memoir of the Pirates of the Caribbean campaign in the Volvo Ocean Race The book is composed of two sources of content. First, there is text that was written by Paul Cayard after the race concluded. Second, all the daily reports that were generated during the race, much of them from onboard, are appended to each leg and this text is italicized. The daily reports give a great insight into what life was like onboard The Black Pearl in various moments, frightening moments as well as exuberant moments. As they were written in the heat of the moment, they bring the emotion of these moments to life. It is my belief that this book will provide great enjoyment for all who read it. But its greatest purpose will be for the crew who sailed The Black Pearl. It is my vision that when each of us is in our 70 s, we will be relaxing on our sofas on a cold winter s night, with the fireplaces well stoked, sipping a single malt whiskey, and through this text, will relive this great adventure. In the end, it is all about what you did with your time on this planet. The nine months that we lived onboard The Black Pearl were exceptional by any measure. Paul Cayard 8
