4 Overview Mission: Endeavour is the legacy program from the 35 th America s Cup, a non-profit educational sailing program. We engage students in experiential STEAM through Sailing learning that builds confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. Goals: Leverage sailing as an effective tool for teaching STEAM Education; Inspire STEAM career pathways through fun, experiential learning; Build life skills including problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership; Integrate youth from different backgrounds and expose to sailing; Increase the retention of youth sailors in Bermuda who continue to pursue the sport and advance their skills. 4

8 Lesson Plan Engineering 8: Sailing Geometry - Designing a Sail Car This lesson provides an introduction to the scientific principles of sailing with emphasis on wind direction, balancing forces, and sail design. Students will explore wind direction and the positioning of sails. Then students will engineer a sail car to race downwind, evaluate effectiveness of design, and redesign for improved performance. Cambridge Standards 7Pf1: Define forces (push/pull), show how forces speed up, slow down, change direction and shape of objects; measure forces; recognize friction along ramp and sliding forces; 8Pf1/8Pf2: Calculate average speeds, including through the use of timing gates 9Pf3 - Explain pressures in gases and liquids (qualitative only), demonstrate pressure in a liquid and in a gas; explain the pressure of a liquid in terms of a particle model Timeline (Estimated time is for a minute class, use the percentages to plan for shorter/longer classes): Introduction/Engage: 7-10 minutes Activity/Explore: 30+ minutes o Sailing geometry exploring points of sail and tacking 10 minutes o Sail car design and build minutes [Less time if using pre-assembled cars] o Sail car race 5 minutes o Optional, time permitting: Sail car redesign and rematch 10 minutes Debrief/Explain: 5-7 minutes Lesson Objectives SWBAT ( Students Will Be Able To ): Develop an understanding of wind direction and sail positioning used in upwind and downwind sailing Evaluate sail shapes and sail fabric weight for distance traveled of a sailing vessel in downwind sailing Work effectively with teammates to design, build, and evaluate a sailing vessel Additional Information: The Forces Involved in Sailing Upwind: Materials: Kit Contents (6) assembled hulls of K nex sail cars (6) plastic plates for distributing K nex (36) Sails for cars made of K nex pieces and various fabrics [6 of each fabric and shape combination] Assorted K nex pieces for building sail cars (2) Needles for repairs (2) Scissors for repairs (6) Measuring tapes (6) 11 fans Consumable Kit Contents Masking tape Wire (22 gauge) canvas fabric linen fabric silk-like fabric Science from Scientists Page info@sciencefromscientists.org Copyright 2017 Science from Scientists
