1 West Wales Maritime Heritage Society Autumn Newsletter November 2013 The nights are drawing in and the temperature is falling which signals the end of another years sailing season for the society. This summer s weather has been the best since my records began, three years ago when I moved to Pembrokeshire. I apologise for including links to other people s photos, which will be useless to members without Internet access, but I m not sure if I have permission to copy their photos. 8th June Parade of Sail at Pembroke Dock This year s highlight was the event in April, where we joined The Pembroke Dock Bicentenary Group to re-enact the arrival of a Navy party to survey the site of the dockyard, which was to be built at Paterchurch, and expanded to become the town of Pembroke Dock. Supporter marshalled the fleet, while Quest and General Picton joined the parade. The weather was excellent on the day and the Bicentenary Group published this 10 minute video, which has an excellent soundtrack. There are more, high quality, pictures from the day on this website: 24 June 2013 Quest to Cresswell Quay On the evening of 24 June, the evening high tide was ideal for a society trip up to Cresswell Quay for a pint at The Cresswell Arms. It was a beautiful warm evening and everyone had a very enjoyable trip. Unfortunately, with old boats few things run to plan and, on the way back, a metal strip on the bow came loose. We discovered that a small area of wood behind the strip was in poor condition and had to beach Quest to make a temporary repair. She will need a proper repair this winter. 1

2 22 July 2013 Haverfordwest's Beating of the Bounds Ceremony General Picton and Supporter represented the society at Haverfordwest's annual Beating of the Bounds ceremony on 22 July. Two society members also attended in their own boats. We were amongst the first to arrive. There were so many participants that, later, the parking at The Bristol Trader was quite congested. Perhaps this is an indication that more people are aware of the River Cleddau s importance to local culture, trade and industry. Local Yacht Club Regatta s. We had planned to participate in Angle s and Dale s Regattas, but we found that Supporter s trailer needed a new wheel bearing as we were setting off for the first and the water was too rough for us to take Quest to the second. Reports from the Boatshed s. We meet at the Front Street yard every Monday at 10 am. There is a coffee break at 11 am and anyone is welcome to come and chat to us, especially if they might be interested in joining us. As this photo of a typical coffee break shows, we do have female members. 2

3 The maintenance of the fleet has continued, although a slower pace over the summer. The work on Tern is continuing. The new wood is evident in this photo, but there is still a lot to do. Quest and General Picton are in the wet dock. 3

4 Linnet s maintenance is completed and she is ready to go. Undine s planned maintenance has been completed, but we discovered that the centreboard s rubber strips and stainless steel bands needed replacing! From the left these are Sinbad, Agnes, Rosyth and Bob. 4

5 The Tenby Lugger named Margaret, is still awaiting restoration. We are bidding for a Heritage Lottery Grant but the bureaucracy is daunting. The County Council own our site and have been promising to fix this hole for 8 months. We have rigged this tarpaulin to keep the rain and bird droppings off the Compass fishing boat K5. This is an overview of the main workshop on a typical Monday. 5
