Ottawa Power and Sail Squadron Rideau Ripples Jan Feb 2016 Ahoy from the Commander, At the AGM in Niagara Falls, Cathie Johnstone and Nancy Richards from OPSS were elected to the National Executive Committee, which is essentially our governing board, and the Committee Subsequently appointed Cathie the National Executive Officer, and Nancy the National Secretary. Linda Hamilton, Guy Ladouceur, Monique Pelland, and Don Tanner are members of other National Committees, so the OPSS is highly visible within our National organization. Hats off to BRPSS Commander Robert Dandurand for winning the prestigious Officer of the year award. Robert is also a member and instructor with the OPSS. Our Chief Commander Joe Gatfield finished his term of office at this AGM, and turned over the helm to our new Chief Commander Robert Pepin. There are great photos of the AGM events and Niagara venue on the National website. Click on the National Conference details link on the main page at cps-ecp.ca to see all 303 of them, many featuring our squadron members. News from the AGM includes changes to the Boating Essentials course. To meet the demand for more compact courses for the busy lifestyle today s boaters experience, the BE course is being divided into 2 separate courses. There are also elective chapters for each course, so they can be tailored to the type of boating skills most needed in different geographic regions. There is also an on the water Boat Handling course in the works. Ottawa has been tentatively selected as the site for the 2018 AGM and conference. This initiative is being spearheaded by Guy Ladouceur, but it depends on support from many others from our Squadron and District. Our last AGM in 2007 was a great success, and it will be a feather in our cap as well as a valuable service to our organization if we can pull it off again. Please consider offering your help to make this happen. About 40 members and spouses enjoyed our Squadron Christmas dinner December 3, including St Nick! The hearty turkey dinner provided by Louis Restaurant, and the comradery we shared made for a very pleasant evening. The new Fundamentals of Weather course went very well this fall. Five of the seven students wrote and passed the exam, but registration for our winter courses is disappointing so far. We have coordinated our courses with BRPSS so that together we offer a variety of courses without duplication or competing prices. Visit boatingcourses.ca to go directly to the National Course Calendar, and see the courses offered by OPSS and BRPSS by clicking on Ontario and then Ottawa. Be safe, and keep well! 4 From the Commander s Files.. The following is an from one of our students who took Boating Essentials with Guy Ladouceur in the fall of 2013, and Seamanship with Bob Morgan and Frank Keating during the winter of It is an inspiring storey that shows that it is never too late to follow your dreams. Gaston sent this to Guy, Bob and Frank last November. He returned home soon after but planned to return to his boat for 10 days in January, and 4 weeks around February/March. On November , Gaston Carreau wrote: Gentlemen, Thought I'd give you a little update on my journey. You've invested much of your time in passing on your knowledge and your passion for boating to others and I thought that a little feedback from a distant student might bring a little grin and satisfaction. So here goes... It all started (as everything does) with an idea. For me, it was in 2008, after a heart attack and shortly after turning 46 years old. Busy like no other, running a business and sitting in bed after a life-saving open heart surgery, here I thought: "life is too short, can't let life go by without doing something I always wanted to do". That something that I always wanted to do was boating. My idea of boating was cruising somewhere, going to special places, to have friends or family aboard that would share our adventures. So I got going. I started with a budget, put some money aside, and did a lot of research on what I wanted to do. One of the things I knew I had to do was to learn about boating. First thing I did in that area was to get my PCOC card. I then registered for Guy's class - Boating Essentials. Guy, I don't know if you remember, but on the first night of the class (September 11, 2013), you went around the class to have everyone introduce themselves and provide a brief summary of their boating experience. Well, everyone (but me) had some form of experience in boating. When my turn came up, I gave my name and told everyone that someday, I wanted to cruise the Islands - somewhere. After taking Frank's and Bob's "Seamanship" course, and the VHF course (radio operator card), fast forward to summer 2014 and I find myself in the middle of negotiations to acquire a 2003 Sea Ray 480 Sedan Bridge cruiser. LOA: 51FT, Beam: 15FT, Draft 4FT, (3) staterooms, (2) heads, and a 1260HP power-plant to push it across coastal waters. I bought it in the St-Petersburg area in Florida. That's when I found out that things get a little complicated for a foreigner who wants to operate a U.S. registered vessel. I won't bore you with the details, but the lawyers recommended that I acquire the vessel as a Canadian vessel. So I ended up hiring a captain who took the boat 12 miles out to sea in the Gulf of Mexico, which is considered territorial waters, and made a legal transaction with the then owner of the vessel. When the boat came back to shore, she was now mine, and a Canadian vessel. May I introduce you to "Island Seeker". She is a documented vessel with Transport Canada. The next fun thing on my list was to get insurance for my new acquisition. Well... that wasn't that fun actually. Things were all good when I called insurance broker after insurance broker, until, I was asked to provide them with my previous boating experience. Darn... had to pull a few strings to get insured but got it done. Anyway, enough with the legalities...more with the journey. Shortly after my acquisition, I hired a captain who went through all of Island Seeker's systems from the bilge right up to the bridge with me. He then spent many hours aboard showing me how to dock, and how to maneuver around the shallow waters of the gulf. He finally signed off and I officially became Island Seeker's skipper. ottawa.com Page 4

My wife and I then planned many cruises along the western shores of Florida. One of our highlighted trips was during this past Christmas and New Year where we cruised from St-Petersburg to Miami to pick up the kids and their wives who had flown in from Ottawa, and cruised back to Key Largo. What memories... (scuba diving, seaside grills, local island excursions, etc...). Kids gone back home, we brought Island Seeker back to St-Petersburg. In March this year, we finally decided to relocate Island Seeker to the East coast of Florida. So we headed down south along the western shores of Florida to Fort Myers where we entered the Okeechobee Waterway. This brings you into Lake Okeechobee and out to Stuart, Florida on the East coast. What a lovely trip. Fast forward to this past Monday, when we undertook the last leg of our journey (I call it the first, really). We left port, through the St-Lucie Inlet in Stuart Florida, and cruised over to West End, Bahamas. After spending two days there, we cruised Eastward, through the North Bahama bank, and around Grand Bahama until we hit the Abacos. As I write this, we are docked at the Sea Spray Marina in White Sound on Elbow Cay (across from Marsh Harbour). So there you have it... a little taste of our adventure which in part was inspired and fueled by your passion for boating. Now, if only I could find a way to retire... Thanks again for passing on some of your knowledge. Cheers! Gaston ottawa.com Page 5

Part VII of Nick & Hetty Baets cruising from Sarasota to Marathon FL. Monday 30 December: We start the day with breakfast and right away tackle the monster grapefruit. Wow, just half of it is a whole meal but it is fresh and tastes lovely. Then we go ashore. What a difference a couple of weeks makes in Ft Myers Beach! After Christmas the place is completely transformed. Everything is abuzz, every 20 minutes a passenger jet comes whining overhead heading for the Ft. Myers Airport, traffic over the San Carlos Bridge is going at a snail s pace, Estero Blvd. is jam packed bumper to bumper, parking lots are bursting at the seams and every terrace has line-ups of people waiting to get in. And beach goers in bathing suits saunter along both sides of the street, in particular groups of teenage girls in bikini s showing off their assets. It must be nice for all to escape the cold and dark parts up north and leave your boots and mitts behind. It is much busier everywhere, even for us cruisers, room at the dinghy dock is hard to get; you have to literally squeeze your dinghy in between the massive fleet of tied-up inflatables. The Ft. Myers Beach Princess tour boat comes by hourly lit up like a Christmas tree, music blaring from its crowded upper deck as does Salty Sam s Pirate ship. The latter passes by with an all dressed up Captain Hook convincing a new load of well-paying wannabe pirates through a PA system to burst into har-di-har-har grunting and in unison recite popular pirate songs of yesteryear on queue. Peak season has arrived! Tuesday 31 December: It s the last day of the year and we check up on weather at the Matanzas Inn Laundromat, the only place where there is Wi-Fi. There we meet a very nice couple from Scotland, Hugh & Brenda Fraser on Scotia. They have been circumnavigating the globe for 13 years! They are on their way to Cuba and ultimately Australia. We are expecting our friends so later on in the morning we head out to Publix by trolley for munchies & champagne. Squeezing ourselves through busy aisles at the grocery store guess who we bump into: the Frasers. After lunch I go pick up our friends at Salty Sam s with our 5 seat dinghy and throw in the regulation required extra life jackets. They are Ron & Shannon, Dennis & Chris whom we saw past Sunday. We take them out on a pleasant sail along Estero Island looking for dolphins and birds. Suddenly it is a lot busier in the cockpit than the last weeks when there were just the two of us. Both couples themselves owned a sailboat and are a pleasure to have along. We make good speed and watch an American Brigantine sail past us along the horizon. From a distance we can see them practice naval gunnery. A huge blue cloud drifts off to sea from their effort. Back in the basin we tie up to our buoy and celebrate ottawa.com Page 7

the return with a few cool Blue Moons and munchies. We have dinner together at the Parrot Key right along the water front. The place is decorated with a plethora of brightly coloured parrots and toucans sitting in the rafters and along the walls. A number of flat screen TVs belch football games from around the US. This is Bowl day for all the networks and we notice a lot of snow & ice on several of the fields up north. Fortunately the winds and waves here are calm and the 6 of us return by dinghy to Solitude where the plan was to chill close to midnight. Then we d head for the pier and watch the fireworks. As it was, we have plenty of fireworks going on all around us already and after our 2 nd bottle of bubbly our guest call it a night. When I return from puttering them to their car at Salty Sam s it is 1145 and Hetty and I decide to await the fireworks in our cockpit. At midnight horns are blaring in the harbour, we hug each other with a kiss and our determination pays off in spades. We are royally treated to a spectacular 20 minute high overhead fantastic colourful fireworks display worthy of our patience. The loud bangs are resounding over the water and seem to travel effortlessly because there is hardly a delay between light bursts and the sound of the explosions. Then we go to bed. Wednesday 1 January, 2014: After our usual breakfast we make a last trip ashore. The keys to the washrooms for cruisers at the Matanzas Inn are very special. They hang on two hooks at the Inn s office and each has a piece of wood attached to it by a chain so you can t put it in your pocket and forget. One has a round piece of wood: a huge log that would do any fireplace proud. The other has a square piece of wood the size of half a solid door. Suffice to say they go nowhere. Proof is that we ve seen the same two keys unchanged during the past four years of sailing here. Back on Solitude we get ready for our sail to Useppa Island today. I watch a shrimp boat leave the docks and not long thereafter, at 1000 we let go of our buoy. As I slowly motor under the bridge and out of the Matanzas Pass into the San Carlos Bay, I notice a big boat ahead of us, seemingly heading straight for us at the G3 marker. I don t know what to make of it because while pointed towards us I see no bow wave. Why is this boat stopped along the shipping channel? Turns out this is Lexi Joe, the 70ft shrimp boat we saw leaving earlier, and she is hard aground on a sand bank clearly marked on my chart. When Big M comes on the VHF announcing it (the Casino Boat) is coming out of the Matanzas Pass, Lexi Joe s skipper meekly responds that they are stuck but there should be plenty of room to pass. How embarrassing for a commercial skipper! We continue under full sail to the Okeechobee waterway and at 1100 we cross under the bridge to the Sanibel causeway. We pass Punta Rassa and head for St. M 0 on the chart (statute mile zero) of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW). Hetty makes coffee and we head west through the narrow channel. The project depth of this 150mile long waterway is 9ft, but do not count on it. Even under optimum conditions, in ottawa.com Page 8

certain spots shoaling is so chronic that boats should slow down. Sailors know the stretch between Mile Zero and the southeastern tip of Pine Island as the Miserable Mile. Here the tide sweeps in and out directly across the arrow-straight channel, and strong crosscurrents are likely. I speak of experience because two years ago we got stuck along this stretch for a good 10 minutes until a passing powerboat with gazillion horsepower roared by. Their wake was enough to set us free. We pass a forlorn marker 6 which leans awkwardly after some unfortunate skipper clearly whacked it, witnessing a good sized ding above the water line. How can you not see a huge marker? My guess is it happened at night or in fog. Still, someone went way too fast for the conditions. Is this where the expression as dumb as a post comes from? Halfway past Sanibel the waterway turns north into the Pine Island Sound and the east wind gives us a nice speed. Suddenly we hear a mayday, mayday, mayday call on the VHF. This is unusual and the Coast Guard in St. Petersburg immediately responds. Turns out that a man with his wife and three kids can t get his motor started or is out of fuel. Clearly a Sunday boater. The Mayday call was actually issued by a passing boat on behalf of the panicked pontoon boat renter. Bless the Coast Guard, they stay cool and quickly establish that there is no threat to the safety of those on board. They take them off-line on channel 22 where we can follow the saga. The poor guy is completely clueless. Eventually the CG helps out by calling the rental company and tell them to go rescue their pontoon boat. At 1300 we pass the South Seas Plantation resort. We have stayed there on a cruise with the yacht club a couple of years ago. A very nice resort but also very pricy. There are a lot of boats out on the water, perhaps because it is a holiday. Mostly power boats on their way to lunch at Cabbage Key or further north. Some travel in a pack and others go so fast that you only hear them when they are right on top of you. Like a couple of cigar boats that jettison huge rooster tails up behind them. At North Captiva we see the Sanibel Thriller pass by. This is a twin hulled speed devil boat filled with howling tourists drawing a colossal wake. It slows down and we notice it has attracted dolphins who love to jump and frolic in the wave behind the boat to the delight of those on board. We could hear the camera s clicking! Two cigar boats roar by, so fast I could only catch the second one on camera. Lastly the Lady Chadwick, the wonky Cabbage Key ferry, steams past with a satiate group of tourists on the upper aft deck being entertained by an enthousiastic tour director. We can hear his spiel through the PA system. At laid-back Cabbage Key they feed you massive burgers. Local legend claims that this island inspired Jimmy ottawa.com Page 9

Buffett to write the song, Cheeseburger in Paradise. Visitors come to this real-life Margaritaville to relax, hike the nature trail, climb the water tower and of course eat cheeseburgers. Thousands of autographed and dated U.S. dollar bills cover the walls, ceiling, lamps and tables in the restaurant and bar. We lower the anchor at 1430 behind Useppa Island in less than 10ft of water, well protected from the east wind. This lovely, 100-acre private island stands 37ft above the water due to the numerous shell mounds here. The dunes are covered with more than 200 varieties of tropical trees, plants and flowers. Legend claims pirate José Gaspar kept a Spanish noblewoman prisoner here, and the island s name is a corruption of her name, Joseffa de Mayorga. It has been a perfect sail and I am happier than a pig in poop. It promises to be a quiet but dark night. The sun goes down at 1746 and it is new moon. At happy hour we have drinks and munchies in the cockpit and watch the sun go down. My favourite drink is rum & passion fruit, while Hetty is sold on Seagram s Peach Fuzzy Navel. Thursday 2 January: Today we have our final but long leg: close to 50 miles. On the way down we left Marina Jack at 0900 and arrived at this spot around 1800, so go figure. To play it safe we get up at 0630, have breakfast and half an hour later we are underway. The plastic windows of the dodger are completely covered in morning dew and I have to keep wiping them clean every 10 minutes or so to maintain some forward vision. We see the sun rise and a bit later pass the familiar Boca Grande light house. We shoot through the Boca Grande pass with the low tide current riding us swiftly out to sea. A bit later we have passed through the swash channel and head straight north into the Gulf of Mexico following the 3 mile limit line on the chart. In succession we pass Gasparilla, Lemon Bay, Engelwood and Manasota. Hetty makes coffee and at noon we are abreast of Venice Inlet. The ride is very comfortable and aside from a couple of fishermen and the never ending annoying crab pot buoys, uneventful. We have lunch and arrive at Siesta Key s south end. We can see droves of sun worshippers bask in the sun on the soft, powdery, brilliant white sand of the very wide beach. New arrivals from the north blend in nicely. It is great to see so many people out and about enjoying one of the best beaches in the US if not THE best. A couple of years ago our own boys and their family rented a beach condo here and had a great time with their toddlers. Not surprising beach property here fetches top dollar. Now comes the last bit of tricky navigation, first finding the red and green buoys marking the entrance to Big Sarasota Pass, then negotiating the pass itself. We find them easily from ¾ mile out and as we get closer furl both our sails. Gingerly we negotiate the shallow pas oln motor, halfway our progress my depth alarm goes off but this is normal. It is set for 7 feet and for the next half mile it keeps sounding because we are barely in 6 ft of water. After another 15 minutes we are over the hump and back in 25 ft of water. Exactly 8 hours after raising anchor tis morning we approach Marina Jack. With a 15 kn south wind blowing I request the dock office by VHF to send someone to our slip so we can throw them a line. This ottawa.com Page 10

way Hetty does not have to risk life and limb jumping ashore with a dock line in her teeth. But when we enter our slip, we notice a whole new row of cruisers docked ahead of us providing perfect shelter from the wind. Docking turns out to be a cinch. These are all new boats that have arrived after our departure 22 days ago. Hetty goes to fetch the car and I hose the salt water off the boat and then load up a cart with clothing and perishables. One hour later we are back at our condo. With our last bit of energy we unload the car and are ready to celebrate our return. We stick the perishables in the fridge and are ready for tea and a sauna.
