5 Special attention! A full schedule leaves very little training opportunities: Only Saturday morning. A lot of boats are expected on the water. No training on Sunday. Keep starboard side and pay attention at bends and bridges. Be off the water in time! No crew is permitted to pass the TORONTO BRIDGE! Boats risk exclusion that do so. 5

7 Coxswain weighing Only coxswains of senior and junior 18 events will be weighted. No weighing of coxswains for master, club, mixed, corporate and junior 16 events Coxswains of junior crews must be in junior category them self. A coxswains at the Head of the river Amstel must be at least 15 years old on the day of the race. Need deadweight? Keep it in the boat as close as possible to the coxswain! 7

8 Weighing and shirt numbers Weighing of coxswains and lightweight rowers must be done between 3 to 2 hours before the start of the event. Athlete and coxswain weighing is in the erg room of Willem III. Athletes and coxswains must be weighed wearing their racing uniform. Use all 3 shirt numbers: Bow rower on clothes during warming up and cooling down Bow rower on racing uniform Coxswain You can keep the shirt numbers as souvenir. 8

15 Racing and arches Crews may only use arches allocated to the race course. Each crew using of a blocked arch or a return arch will be excluded. During racing the following arches can be used Nieuwe Amstelbrug: middle arch leading to the start. Berlagebrug: the middle arch as well as the two arches on starboard side. Other arches are forbidden for crews during racing. Utrechtsebrug: only the arch on starboard side and the middle arch. The remaining arch is forbidden. Rozenoordbrug: only the arch on starboard is allowed. The arch on portside is forbidden. 15

16 After the finish in Ouderkerk Immediately after the finish in Ouderkerk all crews must continue slowly. Use arch on starboard towards Ouderkerk. Use the middle arch back to Amsterdam after turning. Just after finish: Return arch: 16

20 Towards the start (1) Entry point T1: launching crews are not allowed to pass this point more than 30 minutes before their own start time. After T1 crews may only row in direction of the start. The second alignment point T2 is opposite Nereus. Crews wait for marshal instructions. As from this point crews row in order of shirt number towards the start. Het last alignment point T3 is at De Hoop. T3 must be passed ultimately 15 minutes before the start time of the crew. Take into account 4 crews will be started each minute. A crew that passes too late point T3 may get a time penalty of 15 seconds. 20

21 Towards the start (2) Just before the Toronto bridge all crews must turn and get ready for the start. Passing the Toronto bridge is forbidden. Punishment for rowing under this bridge is exclusion. Before the Nieuwe Amstel bridge crews must be aligned to one line, rowing slowly towards the start. 21

23 The race course The course is 8 kilometers long and bendy The start line is marked by two poles with a white flag and two signs with START. On approximate 100 meters before the start is the prestart line marked by two poles with a red flag. Crews starting sequentially approximately 15 seconds apart from the pre-start line. A short pause of 2 minutes between different events. The finish line is marked by two poles with a white flag. 23

24 The race course (buoys 1) All small buoys (yellow or orange) of warming up and cooling down must be kept on portside. In addition some big buoys are placed for security nearby Amstel canal, the Big Bend and just before the finish. These big buoys must be kept on starboard side. Passing a buoy on the wrong side or leaving the cooling down / warming up zone may be sanctioned with 15 seconds. 24

25 The race course (buoys 2) Buoys: yellow or orange Small buoys to separate warming up and cooling down zones from course Yellow: here crews are allowed to pass each other Orange: crews are not allowed to pass each other Big (long) buoys Do not hit these buoys, you may get stuck in their nets! 25

26 Some more race info Avoid disturbance of crews that are racing. Use the warm-up and cooling down zone to return to your boathouse. First Aid is at Willem III, first aid kits are on the start boat and finish boat. Insulation blankets are on all small motor boats. In extreme emergencies will be handled in accordance with the emergency plan in consultation with the police and fire departments. 26

27 After the finish Returning boats must stay in the cooling down zone. Stop rowing while returning is only allowed where the cooling down zone is separated from the race course with small yellow buoys. Do never block the cooling down zone for other returning boats. After the finish, an emergency dock is available at rowing club De Watergeuzen in Ouderkerk. 27

29 Overtake during racing A crew that overtakes is free to choose the ideal course. The overtaken boat may not hinder the boat that overtakes and must make way on time so the boat that overtakes is free to choose it s ideal course. The overtaken boat must deviate before the bow of the boat that overtakes has reached the stern of the overtaken boat. The boat that overtakes may not abuse its priority and force the overtaken boat in a dangerous position or in a position in which rowing is not possible anymore. Safety and sportsmanship prevails for all crews in the way they behave. 29

30 Overtake during racing An explanation of 10 standard overtaking situations can be seen on a separate presentation that can be found on the website. 30

31 Protests A protest be indicated by raising hands of the coxswain immediately after the finish. Protests are received by the umpire for protests. A protest must be confirmed, in writing, no later than 1 hour after the finish of the boat at the regatta management (Willem III or RIC). The Board of the jury handles the protest. The Board of the jury resides at the boardroom of Willem III. For a smooth handling of the protest it is necessary that representatives of the teams involved are accessible or available. 31

34 Park your car properly No parking on the Jan Vroegopsingel (near Willem 3) Use the car park near the Mercure Hotel (10 minutes walk) No through traffic at the Jan Vroegopsingel Paid parking only in Ouderkerk Parking is very limited near RIC Police tows wrongly parked cars. Really! 34
