General BaselHead 2018 regulations are governed by the FISA Rules of Racing, with national additions as stipulated by the Swiss Rowing Association (SRV), and the organizers' own rules for the course. 2. Event description - Location: Rhine, through the city centre of Basel, Switzerland - Date: Saturday, 17th November Category: B2; International Regatta - Start: a.m. 3. The course Classic long distance Sprint des Rois - Approx. length: 6400 m Approx. 350m - Water: variable current - Starting arrangements: flying start 4. Map See Annex Regatta program Sprint des Rois: Start racing from the Old University to the Klingental Fähre, ferry cable to ferry cable Classic long distance: Start 2 p.m., between Johanniterbrücke (bridge) and Kaserne (former barracks on north bank), by the Klingental ferry cable (starting and finishing line) Victory Ceremonies after racing, in front of the Kaserne (Sprint approx. midday, Classic approx. 4 p.m.) Winner-Dinner from 5 p.m., after the Victory Ceremony for prebooked crews (Schedule subject to alteration) 6. Racing Flying start for both races at intervals of approx. 20 seconds. SRV umpires will supervise racing. The organizers reserve the right to move the BaselHead to an alternative course in NIffer/France if 2

Entry deadline Definite entries, including athletes names and years of birth, must be submitted via between July 1 st and October 26th Crews can change their entry there up until the closing date. Entries for the Classic race are limited to 100 crews. The date of website submission determines registration and the order of priority on any waiting-list. Early entry is therefore highly recommended. Any withdrawals must be submitted to the Race Secretary by 3

4 6 p.m. on Saturday, 10th November Subsequent withdrawals are only valid with a medical certificate! Notice of withdrawals or changes in teams must be given by mail to raceoffice@baselhead.org. Changes on race day can be made in the regatta office. See the plan in Annex 2. - Opening hours: and p.m. During the break, the office can be reached by phone. 12. Training Provided that the authorities give permission, the pontoon #2 will be opened for training on Friday November 16 th, after 12h p.m. The river will not be closed. The Rhine Shipping Directive (Rheinschifffahrts-Polizeiverordnung) and the traffic rules published on apply throughout. Crews training do so at their own risk. Rhine shipping always has priority. Training on Saturday is only permitted between 10 and 12. Outside this period, the general traffic rules apply. The river authorities will not tolerate any exceptions. As of 1 p.m. on Saturday, the pontoons are only available for crews boating to race. 4

Further regulations Information about special features of the course: Licences: Boats: Clothing: Composite crews: Bow and shirt numbers, GPS transmitters: Coxes' weigh-in: Extra weights: Obligatory life jackets: Boating for the races: Borrowing boats: A video guide to the course will be available on The film explains safety rules, describes the course in detail, and highlights dangers and appropriate behaviour on the water. This knowledge is a prerequisite for all coxes. Course safety advice is also available on demand at the Race Secretary s office from on race day. All competitors from Swiss clubs must be able to present a valid SRV racing licence. Crews from abroad may use foreign racing licences at the discretion of the jury. The umpires will conduct spot-checks before crews boat. Eights, as per the FISA Rules of Racing. All coxes must be seated astern (no front-loaders are permitted). All members of a crew must wear the same colours. Blades must also be uniform. Swiss crews race in official club kit. Crews may contain members of more than one club. Competitors in such composites must all wear the same colours. The organizers will supply bow numbers, GPS transmitters and numbered shirts for coxes and bow rowers. A cash deposit of CHF 150 ( 140) is required. Numbers, GPS transmitter and shirts must be returned to the Race Secretary s office straight after the race. Crews losing these items forfeit their deposits as follows: Lost bow number CHF 40/ 35, Lost shirt CHF 80/ 70, Lost transmitter CHF 150/ 140. At the Race Secretary's office (Klingental Museum) from 8.30 a.m. to p.m., in race kit. Proof of identity is required (ID, passport or racing licence). Will not be supplied. All coxes must wear a life jacket. This will be checked on the pontoon. The organizers will only supply life jackets if ordered in advance. These can be collected for a deposit from the Race Secretary's office. All crews for den Classic long distance must be ready to boat at the appointed time from the pontoon allocated to them. Failure to do so may result in a time penalty. A limited number of boats will be available for hire (without oars). Crews interested in this service should contact Doppel2er GmbH/Filippi (info@doppelzweier.ch). The company coordinates 5

6 Changing facilities: Traffic rules: allocation of hired boats in agreement with the organizers. Changing rooms (signposted) are available in the Kasernenhof sports hall and near Pontoon 3 in the Offenburgerstrasse. 1) During training, warm-up and cool-down the general traffic rules apply, as at all times outside the race traffic period. The river is open for general use. Crews must row upstream near the north shore (the inside bend), and inside the red channel buoys. Crews going downstream follow the shipping channel, keeping outside the buoys on the left side of the river (in the direction of flow), and using only the designated bridge arches. These crews must pay attention to barges, etc. at all times and not stop in front of them. Crews going in either direction should avoid overtaking other boats. Shipping and ferries have priority at all times, and cannot alter their speed or course because of crews! Eights being overtaken by shipping must make way for them, keeping well away from the vessels concerned. 2) During racing, special rules apply. This is the case only on Saturday from 10 to midday (Sprint des Rois) und 1.30 to 4 p.m. (BaselHead Classic) All crews row upstream along the inside bend and downstream on the left-hand side of the river (as seen from the cox s seat). Under the railway bridge, crews in each case take the arch on the cox s left-hand side. Passing the Mittlere Brücke (the bridge near the start and finish*), upstream crews use arch 5 or 6, downstream arch 2 or 3. (Exception during the sprint race below). Boats for the Sprints should turn at the earliest at the Tinguely Museum, but should actually always row the entire course and, following the regatta course, turn around in the underwater of KW Birsfelden. During the sprint race, all 6

7 participants of the sprint runners have to use the arc #2 at the Mittlere Brücke. All other teams (training) choose the arc #4 for passage. Warming up and grouping before the start of the head race as well as rowing takes place between Johanniterbrücke and Dreirosenbrücke. Boats are advised to leave the regatta area when passing the Three Roses Bridge. Crews rowing to the start of the Sprint must not turn before the Tinguely Museum / motorway bridge. Ideally, all crews should keep to the full Head course and turn below Birsfelden power station. During the Sprint, all downstream crews must use arch 2 of the *Mittlere Brücke. For the Head, crews warming up, lining up and cooling down must remain downstream from the start, between the Johanniterbrücke and Dreirosenbrücke bridges. Any crews rowing further downstream should note that the regatta area ends at the Dreirosenbrücke. Prizes: Overall race-day rankings: Prize money will be awarded in each category (W Elite, M Elite, W U19, M U19, W Masters, M Masters) in separate rankings for the full day. The prizes will be announced on before entries can be submitted. Sprint des Rois: Club - Trophy Separate prizes will be awarded to the fastest men s and women s in the Sprint des Rois. The two winning crews (one M, one W) will be invited to spend the night in the 5-star Hotel Trois Rois during the following year s BaselHead. Open to all participating pure club teams. The most successful club will receive a brand-new Filippi coxless pair in the following year. All women's and men's club boats will be ranked. Racing teams are not included in the evaluation. The regulations available on the website are binding. Alternative course in Alsace: Coxes: Liability: If Rhine water levels prevent racing in Basel, the organizers will move the race to the canal in nearby Niffer, France. Information will be made available in the week before the event. The organizers also reserve the right to change the programme and course(s) at shorter notice if conditions require. The course is highly demanding; clubs may therefore only use experienced coxes. As an exception to the FISA Rules of Racing, coxes of U19 BaselHead crews do not have to be juniors themselves. The organizers decline all responsibility for any accidents or damage, on or off the water. Competing clubs are recommended to take out appropriate liability insurance. Crews are responsible for their own steering and race tactics. Any contravention of the racing regulations, particularly near bridges, will lead to time penalties! 7

Coxes therefore do not need to pay additional attention to shipping when racing. Normal river traffic continues at all other times. Before and after racing, each crew is responsible for observing the traffic rules of the Rhine Shipping Directive (Rheinschifffahrtspolizeiverordnung). Crews must exercise caution at all times also during training on Friday (See section 12 above, Training ). River current: The Rhine flows with a varying and often rapid current. Special care is therefore required at all times, particularly near bridges. Umpires instructions must be followed at all times.
