3 From the Bridge Brian Weber, Commodore Don t Delay Growing up my parents always taught me to never put off till tomorrow what you can do today. This cliché is probably seldom used now except by a few of us old timers. In younger years, I really never worried too much about today as I was young and felt there was always lots of time for a tomorrow. However, this cliché appears more applicable as I get older. There is not the same time to do all the things that I want to do. Some may feel that this cliché still holds true but it was replaced by others such as Live for Today or Why Wait Do It Now. In recent years, we have lost many FPYC members whose life was cut short and we have grieved their loss. We take time afterwards to reminisce on all the things we would have liked to have said or done. Generally, money and commitment have prevented us from doing things. However, words are free and money should not be a deterrent. So where are we going with this inane rambling? Well there are two things. First, Ruby and I decided that we wanted to continue to enjoy boating life more. We were looking to increase our on-board space so that my asthma and my early rising would allow me coffee without disturbing Ruby. So we have made the leap to a Carver 404 Motor Yacht with cockpit. We figure that we may only have a few more good years of boating left. We don't want to hold onto a boat if we can't confidently negotiate getting on and off, or navigate the docking of the boat. It is a lot cheaper just to get a HCA membership and come in and visit friends, or we can do like some other visitors to the marina and just sit on an empty boat and take pictures. So thanks in advance to all that dock along the walls for this opportunity. Secondly, we have had many family and friends to whom we are probably guilty of not conveying our true emotions. Showing ones true affections for others might be something that many of you are also guilty of neglecting. For those close to me, you know that I recently lost my father. Thank you to all of you for your support and sympathy. What I have found difficult to show is my true affection with family and friends. You see it just was not something I was taught, saw or experienced growing up. Therefore, I found it difficult to express my love and gratitude. But life changing events have a way of affecting you. So to all my family and friends thank you for your support and know that I love each and every one of you. Hopefully, you don't delay and you are able to convey your feelings to family and friends before it is too late. Also, I hope you are able to make the jump to your dream boat and you can live your dream. On the lighter side, please remember to get your memberships in. Sign up to support your club in an event. Donna Donnelly will be coordinating volunteers for the activities. We are also looking to start a speakers series for Pub Nights. One of the books featured called How to Avoid Huge Ships, caught my attention and I decided to investigate the book reviews on Amazon to try and find out a little more about the book. 6 Outdoor Day Feb 3, 2013 Even though the weather did not cooperate fully to allow for ice skating, quite a few FPYC members came out to participate, catch up with their boating friends and enjoy a wagon ride. A very special thank you to Joe and Mary Lindo, Joe D Aurizio from Dundee Wealth and also to Teri Rivard for providing the delicious refreshments! 6

7 Christine s Galley World s Best Baked Onions (Jamie Oliver) 4 tennis size white onions, peeled Olive Oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 4 twigs rosemary chopped 8 tbl heavy cream 1/2 cup of parmesan cheese Sea Salt & Ground Pepper 4 slices of pancetta or bacon Boil onions 15 mins, until slightly tender Remove from pan and cool Remove top inch of each onion Finely chop, set aside Cut about heaping tablespoon out from inside of each onion Finely chop, keeping outside intact In frying pan add olive oil, garlic, chopped onions Add chopped rosemary Fry couple of minutes until soften, turn heat down Add cream, remove from heat Stir in Parmesan and season Wrap slice of pancetta (or bacon) around each onion Secure with toothpick Spoon onion mixture into each onion Bake at 400 for 25 minutes. Leftover onion filling can also be put into mushroom caps and baked at 400 for minutes. You know, I really don t think I need buns of steel. I d be happy with buns of cinnamon! Ellen Degeneres 7

9 BOATING BLOGS. Windtraveler This blog is one of the best-written blogs on the internet. It follows the travels of Brittany, Scott and their daughter Isla on their Brewer 44 sailboat named Asante. Brittany posts regular Top Ten Tuesday lists and I have found many useful tips on their site. This couple are full-time cruisers although Scott replenishes the cruising kitty with regular stints as a Captain on the tall ship Diamant. Northern Spirit Many of you may remember Ron and Lynne Taylor, former members of FPYC. Ron and Lynne are currently in Warderick Wells in the Exumas aboard their Beneteau 331. They have kindly consented to an interview so stay tuned to next month s to catch up with Ron and Lynne and their adventures. 10 Eeeww.Spiders! I hate spiders and I must admit this is one of my least favourite aspects of boating. We have tried various bug sprays and we think Bug-Tek is the best so far. We found that you could spray the cockpit and canvas etc and even if we did not return to the boat for a couple of weekends, it was still relatively spider-free! I particularly liked that it was non-toxic and the manufacturer even claimed you could drink it (although I don t think I would recommend doing so...). Bug-Tek does not stain and can be used on textiles, wood and plants. They even claim this product is safe to use around pets and children. The manufacturer also suggests taking this spray with you on vacation and spraying your hotel room before you unpack your bags. Bug-Tek can be found at most marine stores for approximately $20.00 for 750 ml Do you have a great product to recommend? Please send me an and I will post your recommendations. 12 Volunteering at FPYC By Donna Donnelly Presently our club has approximately 135 members and is growing. As a group we all enjoy the wonderful activities that are available to us, but do we really know how much hard work goes into each of these events? If we don t get involved, how can we really appreciate what this club really has to offer? On your FPYC Membership Application, we have created a section where you can volunteer to take part in adding your special touch in creating and delivering a fun event...hey, the more the merrier. I know that some of us have offered our services in the past and have never been contacted and we apologize. However, I am pleased to have been asked to make sure that together we can make all events a joint venture between the FPYC executive team and the members. I personally have volunteered in the past and I had a great time working together with different people and enjoyed being part of making an event a big success. It s a fun way to be able to meet new people and I urge everyone to help in any way possible with at least one event this coming season. 13 Navionics (Version 4.1.1) As I have mentioned previously, I like to use my ipad (3G version) to aid in navigation and I use Navionics the most for that purpose. This is a pretty comprehensive app and there are almost too many features to list, but here are some of my thoughts/favourite features: very simple and easy to use; accurately shows the position of your boat on the map; list of marinas and distances to the closest marina, includes phone number and type of fuel available; you can overlay satellite images with Google maps or Bing; list of fuel stations with a place to compare prices (we don t use this much); list of marine stores and contact info and distances; ability to plot routes and waypoints; magnification of maps as required; ability to set a safety depth; weather and wind by location; crosshair that allows you to select a particular item on the chart for identification/more info; pictures of each marina that can be magnified to examine the layout; an additional Nav Module can be purchased to help in route planning; app can be shared between ipad and iphone. Available for Android and ipad, iphone use with ios 5 and later. $49.99 in the itunes Store with an option to purchase the Nav Module for $4.99. Note: I was recently not very happy to learn that if you have a previous version of Navionics, unfortunately you cannot update to the version without purchasing the new app! 13

14 Big Ships at Pub Night By Paul Charles It was a cold night in February but that didn't deter 15 members who made their way to The Judge & Jester in Grimsby for the monthly FPYC pub night. This month we were treated to a talk by Garry Cooke on the ships we might see on Lake Ontario. Garry was a wealth of knowledge on the freighters that ply the lakes - did you know the oldest one still in operation on the lakes was built in 1926? He also spoke about the challenges that low water levels make to shipping and said that for many of the ships a reduction of one inch in draft would mean a reduction of 125 tons of freight. Garry went on to talk about the newest laker, the Baie St. Paul, which has just arrived in Montreal from a shipyard in China. In his position of Naval Architect, Garry designed the Baie St. Paul so I guess he knows what he's talking about! All attending seemed to enjoy the meal, the presentation and the celebration of Dave Goede's 47th Birthday. Pub Night next month will be at The Judge & Jester and will be on March 20th. 16 March Race Report Garry Cooke The second annual GHYRA (Golden Horseshoe Yacht Racing Association) Cruising Regatta has almost sold out this year, nearly reaching the maximum number of entrants of 60 boats. The regatta, as previously reported in these pages, has a cruising fleet and a racing fleet that sail between the member clubs at the west end of Lake Ontario. The race takes place in July, and the sixty boats stop over at the Fifty Point/ Winona area on July 10 th The boats will be berthed at Fifty point and Newport, since all boats cannot be accommodated at one location. The event is basically a week long vacation with racing and/or cruising each day followed by a meal and entertainment at all clubs hosting the event. (These clubs are Royal Hamilton YC, Burlington BSBC, Newport/FPYC, Dalhousie YC, Oakville OYS, Oakville Club, and Bronte YC). The website is still taking reservations as standby, should space open up from registered boats cancelling ( The theme at FPYC/Newport is Caribbean night. There will be a steel band and food with a Caribbean flavour. The entertainment and dinner is open to club members as well as regatta members. FPYC members are encouraged to come out to the meal and support the club (please contact me to reserve a spot). We are also looking for volunteers to help out on the evening. The racing season is not far away, so please contact me if you are interested in some fun racing followed by an evening BBQ. We have a variety of programs being developed to improve sailing skills, racing skills and of course all this to increase your fun and knowledge of sailing and it will also increase your circle of contacts at the club. 17 Meet your New Executive. My name is Jeff Dinyer, and I am excited to be one of your membership Directors for this year along with Brad Davidson. I am married to my amazing wife, Tara, and we have two beautiful girls - Olivia and Danielle. We are located at dock G12 on a boat named Wave Goodbye. Unfortunately, the boat was named by the previous owner, as a more fitting name for our family boat would be Wave Hello! I have been a boater all my life and grew up boating mainly in the Lake Huron and St. Clair River areas. Our first boat as a family was a 20 foot boat that we trailered around. We have had Wave Goodbye since 2010 and have been moored at Fifty Point since then. Both of our girls have been boating since before they were born and I am enjoying reliving my childhood boating experiences with my children. I am proud to be a part of Fifty Point Yacht Club and Brian s messages over the last couple of years have hit home. If we want to have a great club, then we all need to do our part. One of my most memorable moments was being Officer of the Day with Olivia and Danielle. They were so excited and told all their friends. They really enjoyed meeting visitors to Fifty Point, and are looking forward to being mini Officers of the Day in 2013! We enjoy meeting new people and we always have some games or crafts around for the kids and usually a spare kid life jacket or two around, so feel free to drop by and Wave Hello. I look forward to a great summer and meeting you all as we all help out our yacht club. 17

18 The Stability of Boats By Garry Cooke Have you considered whether it is safe to take your boat and embark on a trip offshore, or across the Great Lakes, not only from the structural aspect, but also the stability aspect? The capability of a boat to withstand heavy weather is determined by a number of factors that were largely determined when the Naval Architect was contracted to design the vessel initially by the boat builder. The structural strength of the vessel would be determined by the builder, and the fiberglass thickness and lay-up so the manufacturer would need to be consulted regarding the vessel s capability. For the stability aspect, there are two main characteristics in boat design that affect this. They are the beam of the vessel in relation to depth and draught, and the other is the location of the centre of gravity; the point where the weight of the boat may be considered to act. In more traditional yacht design (boats like the Alberg, Contessa etc.) which have a deep keel, low centre of gravity and relatively narrow hull, they have a good range of positive stability. More modern designs with very wide flat hulls, and fin keels, have less range of positive stability. The latter type hull characteristics are also applicable to many power boats, which are planing type vessels but with no ballast, and they also have a smaller range of stability. Typically, the wider hulls will give more resistance to heeling during the initially small angles of heel, but as the heel angle increases, the amount of resistance to heel decreases more rapidly on the flat wider hulls. As the heel increases, it reaches a point where stability will vanish, and the boat will capsize. For the wider hulls this can occur sooner than the deeper type hulls, and in fact the wide flat hulls become very stable while inverted! The diagram on the next page shows two typical stability curves for a flat and also a deep hull form. The points of vanishing stability on the deeper hull indicate that if the boat is knocked down by a wave or heavy wind, she will come back upright, even if the mast is under the water, while the flat hull will likely stay inverted beyond about 100 degree heel. There are methods of improving the flat hull s performance, which include fitting more ballast low down and providing a more buoyant cabin structure above the deck. The latest design codes provide formulae for assessing the stability of boats and their suitability for travelling offshore. The EU (European Union) provides a boat Category listing that allows buyers of boats to determine if the boat meets the necessary standard for the intended purpose..continued 18

19 These four categories A, B, C and D A ~ Ocean B ~ Offshore C ~ Inshore D ~ Sheltered Waters For the Great Lakes, and sailing locally from marinas where safe refuge is not far away, the Category C would suffice. A Category C boat will allow you to proceed in up to 6 feet waves and 27 knots of wind. A Category B boat could venture out in winds over 27 knots and seas up to 12 feet, which may be applicable to Lake Superior if ports of refuge are too far distant. Category A will allow you to survive potentially in winds over Beaufort force 8 (40 knots) and seas greater than 12 feet. This standard can be applied to many types and shapes of hulls, and can be calculated by a Naval Architect if not provided by the builder of your boat. 19

20 Pub Nights Pub nights will continue through the winter up until spring launching. We had a pub night on Feb 20th, which was reasonably well attended, with a presentation on the Large Vessels you Encounter on the Great Lakes, and some pictures/details of the new generation of Lake Freighter being constructed in China. The next pub night will be on March 20th. We hope to be having a speaker providing information about chartering boats in the Caribbean; things to watch out for, pros and cons etc. It s a good time to touch base with your fellow boaters and keep connected. Keep an eye on the web site for details. We will also be sending out a group or invitations to all members prior to the event once we have the event confirmed.
