1 THE DITTY BAG Lake Canyon Yacht Club Canyon Lake, Texas Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club P. O. Box 18554, San Antonio, TX Welcome New Members CHARLES R. AGAR and AUTUMN AGAR 1203 New Braunfels, TX JAKE W. MATHIS and SYLVIE MATHIS 1204 Wimberley, TX STEPHEN W. BOX 1205 Bastrop, TX Commodore s Report By Ray Leubner For those of you who receive the Ditty Bag by mail, I regret to inform you of the passing of Bob Cole. Bob was commodore in 1988 and 1989 and successfully led LCYC through a very difficult period of financial instability. Our prayers and sympathy go out to Carolyn and family. The guys, with some major help from a couple of very special gals, pulled off a pretty tasty Mother s Day Breakfast thanks to Harold Simmons, David Bray, Herb Eastwood, Jim & Renee Kizziar, Carl Hawkins and Ray & Kathy Leubner. If you don t come to these monthly breakfasts, you don t know what you are missing! Memorial Day weekend is upon us with the Memorial Day Weekend Regatta on the 28th and 29th, a Nautical Swap Meet and Flea Market from noon on the 30th, and of course the Fish Fry later that day. Please see the website for details. There s something for everybody. Our calendar is truly in high gear now with the Sunfish Regatta June 4th and 5th, the start of the Summer Series on June 11th and 12th, the Jimmy Buffett Party on the 12th, Adaptive sailing on the 18th, Father s Day Breakfast on June 19th, and Youth Race Camp from June 23rd to 26th. Activities Chair By Margaret McGill By the time you read this, the Memorial Day Fish Fry will be another wonderful LCYC memory, and you may be upping your treadmill time to compensate for the tasty fried fish, corn on the cob, Mary Lindsey s pinto beans, and all the fabulous desserts contributed by your sailing friends. Thanks in advance to all those who have helped or will help, especially Carl Hawkins for coordinating this annual (Continued on page 2) Perhaps you sent a lovely card, Or sat quietly in a chair; Perhaps you sent beautiful flowers, If so, we saw them there. Perhaps you sent or spoke kind words As any friend could say; Perhaps you were not there at all Just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console the heart, We thank you so much, whatever the part. 2 event. The Mother s Day breakfast was really over the top, thanks to Harold Simmons, Ray and Kathy Leubner, Jim and Renee Kizziar, David Bray, and probably a few others I don t know about. The food was excellent and the company genial. There weren t quite as many people as we had last year, but the club house was full. It s been very difficult to predict the turnout for various events. Any ideas? The summer will be very busy with sailing and social events, so be sure to keep up with the web site and read your s for details. Remember the Father s Day breakfast is NOT on a sailing weekend because Father s Day is the third Sunday of the month, June 19. The McGill women and anyone else who wants to help are hosting the event. See you on the water or in the kitchen, Margaret McGill Adult Sail Training By Bill McVey Adaptive Sailing Program We held our first outing for 2011 on Friday May 13th, and by all accounts it was a great success. We had 13 guests, eight of whom were Wounded Warriors recovering here in San Antonio, four were family members, and one was the representative from Operation Comfort, with whom we coordinated to put on this event. We also had eighteen LCYC volunteers and 8 boats lined up for the day (although we opted to use five of the larger ones so families could sail together). It was a perfect sunny day with temperatures in the 80's and a nice breeze of 6-9 mph. We began at 11 am with a short boat orientation "class", followed by a great fix-your-own sandwich, chips, and cookies lunch provided by LCYC and served up by Mary Lindsey, Carolyn Harris, and Millie McVey! At noon we made our boat assignments, boat crews met their guests, and we headed for the boats, to enjoy sailing until returning about 2:30 pm. Virtually all of our guests did lots of steering, sail trimming, and especially enjoyed it when the boats heeled over in puffs! At the end of the day, they all expressed their sincere thanks for providing them this this fun-filled opportunity. I know I speak for all of our volunteers when I say we enjoyed it every bit as much. Our guests were wonderful folks and soaked in all the sailing knowledge we could show them in this one afternoon. They were very easy to please, and fun to have on board. In addition to the ladies mentioned above, I would like to acknowledge and thank all of the following members for joining in to help make this day possible; Bubba Horner, Dave Sanford, Rick Nathan, Joe Vied, Henry McGill, Ray Leubner, David Bray, Carl Hawkins, Hans Micklitz, Pat Edwards, Charlie Mayer, Barry Parkoff, Jim Ritchie, and Marvin Arnold, Bob Wickman, and Gabby Hays Our next outing is planned for Saturday June 18. Our guests will be adults and kids with special needs. We organize this outing with the SA Parks and Recs Therapeutic Sports Program. We would like to have 10 boats and skippers available and another 10 experienced sailors to help out on each boat and be the back up in case the skipper decides to take a swim! We also will need 3 folks to put out the lunches and pick up afterward. If you are interested, please contact me at bmcvey@gvtc.com. Thanks very much. Great job to all the youth sailors!! The Saturday Sailing program is underway again! Thanks to Clay Cassard, Bill McVey, Diane & Ian Clements, and Dave Lilley for staffing all the Spring Saturday LCYC ~ June 18, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Youth RACE LCYC ~ June Docks & Grounds By Marvin Arnold No doubt about it, Summer is here, and with the high temperatures and lack of rain the lake level is already three and a half feet down from full pool. Watch your bottoms around all the shallow points in the lake as they are closer than you think. (Continued on page 4) Page 3 of 11

4 (Continued from page 3) The work shop addition is complete and now wiring and shelving are being installed. The much needed storage space is welcomed. competitive fleet, with everyone having a chance to win. Beauty of a one design fleet. Only way to go especially in small dinghy type sail boats. Our boat work area now has a large cement slab and the boat hoist A-frames have been painted. Your working conditions are greatly improved with this addition. Remember, if you haven t used the boat hoist before, get checked out by one of the Docks and Grounds Staff before using the equipment. Watch for our weather Race Chairman Report Bubba Horner Keel Boats What a beautiful day for sail boat racing. Not a cloud in sky, but cool temperatures all day. Wind predicted at degrees around 16 mph. Ended up with 1st race at 360 degrees around mph. Chris Christian fouled at start, and was dead last after heading to far right side of course J-22s approaching leeward mark, all on starboard tack to make his penalty turns. Chris ended up 1st to windward mark well ahead of fleet! Good lesson, never give up, to many variables in sail boat racing, so always have a chance to win. Bill coasts across finish line in shortened race. 2nd race moved windward mark to 345 degrees with wind still very shifty and variable. Fred Lindsey won last race of day to beat Keith Zars by one point. Keith had missed April races when it really blew hard, so had no throw outs. Keith does well in high winds. If good in high winds, usually always do good in high winds, different technique. Should use every opportunity to sail in heavy winds. Will make you a better sailor, and also builds confidence. Josef Scherm is a good example. All that North Sea sailing pays off in heavy weather, as Josef really does well under windy conditions. His Soling has a very deep keel with large bulb at end, so loves heavy weather. Some keel boats are very tender (heal over more in less wind) but are faster in lighter conditions which we experience here at Canyon Lake the majority of time. Derek Crawford won both Non-Spin B class to take 1st place for series. Pete Prados had a chainplate pulled out and is under going repairs, but should by back in water in time for Memorial Day Regatta. There was a 3 way tie for 1st place, Non-Spin A, but Tom Geis pulled it out by winning last race. Talked with Tom and is forming a Cruiser/Big Boat fleet. If get 3 or more boats, will have their own fleet, which is only fair. How in the world can a cruising type boat compete with a stripped down racing type keel boat? Racing boats either on hoist or pulled out of water and dry stored. Maybe be able to get more of our Cruisers to participate in races. Gary Bourgeois has Chris Christian in a safe leeward position forcing Chris to tack over to starboard tack shortly after photo taken. Wind very shifty, with huge changes in direction and velocity all day. Chris had 7th in 2nd race. J-22 is a very Really a lot of fun, and will make anyone a much better sailor. Rules not that hard and Tom and Jim Kizziar would be more than willing to help guys get involved. Sail boat racing is very addictive because so much fun and a lot of folks involved. Great meal prepared by Luzia and Wayne Weston, with (Continued on page 5) Page 4 of 11

5 (Continued from page 4) Mary Lindsey and Sue Radley also involved. like the trophies. 1st place were frosted beer mugs, other places were coffee cups. Trophies were made by Gerardo RC manned by Bob Middleton, Betty Rourke, Gerardo Gala, Bubba Horner Chase manned by Wayne Eckstine, Lee Woodbury and Joe, and friend of Gerardo Gala, who has had Coast Guard experience. Trophies were made by Gerardo Gala which everyone really seemed to enjoy. 1st place was a frosted beer stein with following places by coffee cups. All have picture of involved fleet on surface. Board Boats What a difference a day makes. Had mph out of degrees yesterday for Keelboat races. Forecast today for Board boats was mph out of 070 degrees. Ended up with wind all over compass, maximum about 6 mph. Shortened 2nd race because of dying wind, and abandoned 3rd race for lack of wind. Dave Sanford put a real horizon job on Sunfish fleet. He came by RC boat and said he was heading to practice for water skiing events that will be held at Lake Mc Queeny as summer approaches. Good call on his part, as he only missed a shortened race and a canceled race. Dave easily won 1st place overall. Jeff, Stacy, and daughter, Emma, finally showed up for their 1st race of Spring Series and immediately took a first place. We shortened course for 2nd race of day, looked like finish line would not be long enough, because 8 Flying Scots appeared to lined up for a photo finish. Bill McVey coasted across in first place, followed by Rich Nathan and Wade Arledge who were grinning ear to ear, having a great time. Bob Middleton called off 3rd race because of lack of wind. Bob did a great job in running races which is difficult in light airs. Bob was assisted by Betty Rourke and Lee Woodbury. I helped Wayne Eckstine on Chase boat, which allowed me to get some photos from a different angle. Great meal was served by Luzia and Wayne Weston. Trophies presented to winners. Everyone seemed to really Immediately after start of Sunfish race. Note fleet 2 flag, blue with white ball just dropped and fleet 3 flag already up, a rolling start. Dave is in ideal position, ahead and to windward Madelyne Wilson attempting to blanket Brandon Cassard with her wind shadow, downwind starboard tack. Note wind direction by flag at Randolph. Gala, which has been helping on RC boats. Will keep him busy for a while making our trophies,. Optis sailed by Madelyne Wilson and Brandon Cassard. Madelyne winning 1st race, with Brandon winning last 2 races. They were able to get in 3 races before wind quit. Brandon's brother, Chris Hawkins won the Laser Radial fleet with Kelton Smith coming in 2nd. Would like to thank Clay Cassard for being out on water helping keep an eye on the kids. Really takes a load off of RC boats. Bubba Longneck Multihull Regatta Joe Monosmith The 2011 Longneck multihull regatta had the best wind and weather in years. Race committee got off five good races on Saturday and two more on Sunday. This was in no small part due to our excellent chase boat crews: Jack and Barb Rudduck along with Lenny on chase one, Grant Lucas and Marvin Arnold along with J.D. on chase two. These guys (and gal) picked them marks up and laid 'em down so fast that there was no waiting between races. The kitchen crew of Pat Ketchum, Sue Radley and several members of Sea Scout Ship 26, lead by Terry Tomko, put in a full day s work preparing a finger licken good barbeque dinner that just could not be beat. Saturday night's Longneck raffle was the highlight of the weekend (well maybe not to the racers) with all sorts of goodies: camping chairs, wine, hotel stays and more flamingos than you would have thought possible handed out with much joviality and good natured disrespect. Longneck benefits Sea Scout Ship 26 so, if you did not make it this year be sure to mark your calendar for next year. I guarantee it will be bigger and better then ever. Final Results are on next page. (Continued on page 7) Page 5 of 11

6 FOURTH ANNUAL BUILD A BOAT COMPETITION AND DUCT TAPE REGATTA AUGUST 6, 2010 The Fourth Annual LCYC Build a Boat Competition and Duct Tape Regatta will be held on Saturday, August 6 beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the LCYC superdock. Teams will build their boats on the superdock within a prescribed time limit from materials provided by the Club. Teams can embellish their boats with decorations of their choice. After the completed boats are judged, they will compete in the Duct Tape Regatta, which will be held at the LCYC lagoon. Teams: This event will be an intra-club competition. Teams from D Dock, C Dock, B Dock, and Youth Dock will compete for Build a Boat prizes. Members who wish to field an independent team must register by contacting Jim Kizziar at by August 1 to ensure availability of materials for their boat. Date/Time: Saturday, August 6. Boat building begins at 3:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. Judging and the Duct Tape Regatta will follow. Materials and Building: Insulation sheet, rolls of duck tape and plywood will be provided by the Club. Teams may NOT add any other structural materials to those supplied by the Club. Teams are encouraged to "Theme" and decorate their boat, at their expense. Boats may be designed prior to the competition, but must be built entirely on the Superdock within the time period specified for the competition. Hand tools only (no power tools) may be used in building the boat. All tools must be furnished by the Teams. Theme: Each boat should have a theme. The better the theme, the more elaborate the theme, the more points will be awarded by the Judges. Design and Assembly: The boat must be a "sit in" vessel. No "sit on" designs (such as surfboards or look-a-likes) are allowed. The Duct Tape Regatta: This year there will be three races in the Duct Tape Regatta. The first race will be a youth event and the paddler must be 15 years or younger (paddlers may be recruited from the Youth Team). The second race will be an adult event. The third race will be a relay race. Further details regarding the races will be provided at the beginning of the event. Paddles for each boat are the responsibility of the team and not the club, so remember to bring them to the event. The start and finish of the races will in the LCYC lagoon. Life jackets are required for all racers. The racer must be a member of the Team (e.g., the D dock team racer must have a boat on D dock, or be a family member with a boat on the dock). In the event of tie in any race, a "final heat" will be conducted between the tied boats. Boat Awards: A panel of distinguished judges will select the boat awards in each category. Awards will include Best Theme and Decoration, Best Construction and Most Spirited Shore Crew. The overall winning Team will be enshrined on the permanent Build A Boat trophy. Duct Tape Regatta Awards: Cumulative points for the three races will decide which Team wins the Duct Tape Regatta. The paddlers for the winning Team will receive Duct Tape Regatta trophies. Refreshments: Each Team is to supply its own refreshments and shore crew. Sharing of refreshments is encouraged. The Club will provide a beer keg for the event. Since this will be an LCYC family event, each team is expected to control the consumption of alcoholic beverages to those of legal age. Come join in the competition and fun. Cheer on your favorite team. Observe design and boat building skills on the Superdock. If you are not on a Team, come to the dock and enjoy the fun. If you have any questions or suggestions for this event, please contact Jim Kizziar at (office ), (cell ) or james.kizziar@bgllp.com. Page 6 of 11
