1 Commodore s Report By David Bray Well, by the time you read this, Wurstfest Regatta will be well under way. Ray and Kathy have been outdoing themselves getting ready and organized. Ray has done more promotion than ever and the registrations are running ahead of last year. It should be another great regatta. We will be installing a pump on A dock after the regatta that will replace the submersible we had. The Corps no longer allows submersible pumps in the lake so it had to come out. Preparations are underway for the annual meeting in December. It will be at Fair Oaks Ranch again, why mess with a good thing. Food is always good and the room is just right for us. You will receive ballots and invitations in November. Please return the ballots if at all possible so we can get a quick count at the meeting. Weather is beautiful, hope to see you at the lake. David Bray Activities Chair By Margaret McGill Ready or not, it s time for Wurstfest! Thanks so much to all who have helped in the kitchen (and under the tents, and on the decks) during the past year. The Commodore s Breakfast served 56 people in October. Thanks to Kathy and Ray Leubner for organizing the tasty THE DITTY BAG Lake Canyon Yacht Club Canyon Lake, Texas Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club P. O. I really appreciate Pat Ketchum stepping in for me to serve a continental breakfast and lunch for the people who attended the fall work day October 16. I wish I could have been there. Please let me know if you want to host an event next year or if you want to help with one. I can be reached through the club web site, Margaret.mcgill@gmail.com, or phone (voice or text). 2 (Continued from page 1) Serene Woods Circle. Stop by for a visit! See you on the water or in the kitchen, Margaret McGill Adult Sail Training By Bill McVey No report for this issue. Youth Sailing By Kellie Terrell Youth Sailors were active on the water in the month of October! The October Boardboat Races saw a number of youth out on the race course: Antone Davis in the Sunfish fleet; Nia Clements, Brandon Cassard, Madelyne Wilson, and Esiquiel Bilger in the Opti fleet. The competition is close in both fleets: only 3 points separate 1 st -3 rd places in the Opti fleet and only 1 point separates Chris and Antone in the Sunfish fleet! Hope to see all the registered youth in November to finish out the series in the Sunfish and Opti fleets! October 16 th was a club Workday in preparation for Wurstfest. There was a lot of action on the Youth Dock, with youth sailors and adults moving boats, checking rigging and equipment, and washing boats. Opti sailors worked together to wash, wax, and buff the racing Optis, while Chris Harkins cleaned and waxed the Sunfish he ll race in Wurstfest. You could see the shine on the bottom of that Sunfish clear across the breakwater! Work was followed by a great lunch which the club provided, then the FUN really started for the youth sailors! Bill McVey and Chris Besch took the youth sailors and family members out on their J-22s for a Big Boat Cruise! It was a perfect afternoon for sailing; clear skies and good breezes! We had a great time match-racing, looking for the next wind gust, and getting soaked in a water-cannon battle! Thanks to all the folks who came out to help on the youth dock: Bill McVey, Chris Besch, Harold Simmons, Chris Upton, Clay Cassard, Brooks Englehardt, Mike Bolles, Kellie Terrell, Sean Besch, Chris Harkins, Brandon Cassard, Brittanie Upton, Kaitlyn Rourke, Jack Englehardt, Lucie Englehardt, Mark Bolles, and Alexander Reupke! It was great to see so many people show up for a morning of work! October 23 rd was the last day of Saturday Sailing for 2010 and was scheduled to be a Youth Race Day. Brandon Cassard was the only sailor who was able to come out that day, however, thanks to Bill McVey and Clay Cassard, he was able to get some good practice sailing in heavy wind. Saturday Sailing has been a lot of fun this year! Thanks to all the adults and teenagers who manned the dock from June-October to make this program happen: Bill McVey, Harold Simmons, Lynn Simpson, Chris Besch, Randle Moore, Kellie Terrell, Coleman Terrell, Aaron Stuckey. The program will resume in Docks and Grounds By Bob Middleton Thanks to all those who helped out on the October Work Day. We had a great turn out with over fifty members participating. Parking lot lines, decks, railings and slip numbers were painted; bushes and ground trimmed and clubhouse windows cleaned. I thought the work was especially well done this time which supports the success of Wurstfest. And let s not forget Pat Ketchum and the kitchen helpers who prepared an excellent lunch. Thanks again to everyone! The gate and clubhouse security codes will CHANGE on January 1, New codes will be sent out in conjunction with the monthly billing. By now most of us know that Brian Losee was married on 10/10/10. Several of us attended their ceremony in Bulverde, and we wish the Losee s our best. The Docks and Ground crew has been quite busy in October to make sure everything was ready for Wurstfest. Racing flags, anchors/lines and buoys etc. were inventoried and replaced when necessary. Committee and chase boats needed servicing. Docks were realigned and the pipe dock moved. And that was just the start! (Continued on page 3) Page 2 of 8
3 (Continued from page 2) Race Chairman Report By Bubba Horner Have just received notice that Honorary Member, Paul Foerster, will represent USA in Pan American Games to be held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in Sunfish Class. Dates will be Oct , Paul is a three time medalist in Olympics sailing, in dinghy class, probably 470's. Paul is a frequent Sunfish sailor here at LCYC. He lives in Dallas, and member of Rush Creek. Bubba Keel Boats Looked like we had a possibility of a complete no race series, as we had to abandon all racing last time we raced in September, because of lack of wind. Only time where we have 3 races in 2 different months to reach our needed 6 races. This is for Keel boats only, Board boats will have their total of 9 races, as they will have races in November. Luckily had enough wind to get off 3 races, although all were fairly light, especially first race. Have had really light air past couple of weeks. Fred Lindsey had at least a 1/2 leg lead on final run to finish, only to fall in hole with no wind. All on starboard tack run to finish line, with Fred on direct line, shortest distance to finish line. Scott Dunn and Keith Zars spotted wind line from dam and headed that way, received breeze first, as they were both well to windward of Fred. Fred could not go toward new wind line as he was like in a vacuum, with no forward movement. Can not do anything unless have forward speed, so just have to sit there and watch boats pass. Very frustrating situation, but all racing sailors will experience it many times in their career if race enough times. That is what racing is all about. Think you can out smart mother nature, she bit you in the butt when least expected. Scott had lead for a while, but Keith finished 1st with Scott 2nd, Fred a rare 3rd place. Last two J-22 races, Individual Recall flag got a work out. Everyone returned to make proper start in 2nd race. Watch the X Flag, white with blue cross, Individual Recall flag. If boat or boats return and stays up, you may have been over early. Keith Zars continued his dominating by winning last 2 races in J-22 fleet. Dave and Michelle Lilley had 3 bullets in Catalina-22 class with Lynn Simpson receiving three 2nd's. PHRF Non-Spin A fleet was won by Bob Wickman, which really showed his potential speed of J-105. Rounded wrong mark and still won race! Tom Geis had solid 2nd, but J- 80 is closing gap. Largest improvement in class has been Bob Wickman with his 1st win ever in fleet. PHRF Non-Spin won by Derek Crawford. Had no show from Pete Prados who was leading fleet. Steve Wilson in his Catatina-27 trophied with his 2nd place. Great meal prepared by Luzia and Wayne Weston. Anything Luzia cooks you know is going to be excellent! Had trouble with both lighthouse and club house computers. Could not get on internet. Wayne Peacock came over to our home and punched out results, but by time we had results, everyone had left. Sorry about that. Told Steve Wilson, "That I may be slow, but I do poor work!" Was really caught short on help this weekend for RC help. Phoned Jim Ritchie, but was already committed. Jim suggested Rick Nathan to help. Rick is a Flying Scot sailor and wanted to do some RC work to see what goes on in setting courses. Boy, did he ever come through with a bang. Handled all the flags, recorded all scores which was really hard because had to record exact time of all PHRF boats. Hard time of year because of football games, baseball playoffs, etc. Everybody was tied up but will continue to bug people in future. Remember, this is a volunteer club. If want to come out and learn how to run races, be my guest. You are always welcome. Bubba Horner Remember it stays up until ALL boats that were over early return to start properly, but no later than four minutes after starting signal or one minute before any later starting signal, whichever is earlier. With our rolling starts and small fleets, probably a couple of minutes is enough time for racers to realize if they were over early. Also remember it goes up with one sound signal which should be made within a very few seconds after start signal. Have it actually in hand as starting signal made so may immediately raise with sound signal. It comes down with NO sound signal. Would be too confusing to fleet that is in their starting sequence. Board Boats Board boat racers seem to have best of winds on last two outings. Keel boats in Sept. had a rare abandoned races because of lack of wind. Oct. Keel boat races were held but much (Continued on page 4) Page 3 of 8
4 less wind. Wind on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010 were 8-12 mph, with rare whitecaps and gusts. Windward mark placed at 170 degrees, with large shifts. Wind went both to degrees, but seemed to pretty much stay around 170. Instead of windward-leeward courses, decided to give fleets T and G courses. Opti's given windward-leeward with same start-finish line and separate buoys (shorter) for their courses. Would like to take this opportunity to suggest that parents in chase boats for Optis, please pick up their marks. Our Chase boat was not available, so marks were all necessary to be retrieved by brute strength, like old times. Gets old when have to pick up 6 marks. Also, parents could put out red balls. instead of larger buoys, require only one rock to anchor, and course short enough so would have no problem in identifying proper marks to round. This would also involve parents into why we lay out our courses, so we do not have reach-reach courses. Win-win for both sides. Bruce Dunn had a broken tiller or tiller extension, during first Flying Scot race of day. He said he could fix it in time for second race. He was a couple of minutes late for second Scot race, and was going full blast on close hauled port tack. Sunfish had started their sequence, and Harold Simmons was running starting line to get compass heading and line of sight on shore, when sudden loud collusion occurred. Harold was on high side on starboard tack and slightly heeled to leeward, which made Bruce hit him forward of cockpit, most of force on deck slightly above sheer line. Threw Harold into boom. Lucky for everyone, no serious damage, physically to Harold or boat. Just makes us a little more aware that sailboat racing is potentially a dangerous sport, but what isn't nowadays. Neither boat saw the other, which is understandable, stuff happens. Talk about screwing up, I was one minute off on Flying Scots start in last race of day. Bill McVey started with flags, then came back to inform me that I was one minute off. Proceeded to go out and catch up to fleet and finished second! After talking with sailors, decided to throw out race. This really hurts Bill, because he had previous commitment, so did not sail in Sept. races, Should have brought back fleet and given them a new start. Been sailing all my life, and still learning and screwing up. Something great happened in Sunfish fleet. Lynn Simpson put a horizon job on fleet in third race of day. Beating Chris Besch, Dave Sanford, and Harold Simmons is no easy task. Good work Lynn! She really has been bitten by the racing bug. No cure except more racing, which she is very eager to do. We should all be very proud of Lynn and encourage her. Two of our former youth racers are competing for their universities and doing very well. Coleman Terrell sailing for Texas A&M- Galveston won the SMU Regatta in 420s, probably sailed on White Rock Lake. He also sailed against Seth Cunningham, sailing for UT- Austin in 420s. Seth won 6 races, Coleman won 3 races and Tulane took one race, sailed in Galveston, on Offats Bayou. Opti fleet had 3 races: Brandon Cassard had a Madelyn Wilson had a Nia Clemens had a Kids are sailing much better, getting up to starting line much improved, and tacking and jibing better. Not getting into irons as often. They will only improve with more racing. Computer in lighthouse and club house still not working. Bill McVey helped scoring on computer at my home. Had great snacks from leftovers from Keel boat meal and Commodores breakfast. Had another unusual incident which occurred doing board boat races. When Chris Powers lowered his centerboard rounding leeward mark, heading back upwind towards windward mark, his lower portion of board fell off. This is portion where most of weight is located, and also made it impossible to go upwind. That ended his racing for the day. He does have older boat, but kinda unusual for it to happen when having swing board. In dagger board boat, necessary to safety board to keep from falling out of trunk when capsizing. Carl Hawkins save the day by assisting me on RC boat. Wayne Eckstine and Lee Woodbury did their usually great work on laying out courses. Bubba Horner Page 4 of 8
