Lake Charles Yacht Club The Tacking Times Newsletter THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE LAKE CHARLES YACHT CLUB 2017 Board members Commodore: Guy Richards Rear Commodore: John Harris Vice Commodore: John Kalna Treasurer: Sheron Faulk Secretary: Laura Gayfield Newsletter: Philippe Girard Race: James Latour Harbor: Scott Cesar Grounds: David Sargent Social: Summer Rice News July 2017 The board meet on 13 June. Here are some highlights: Guy, Summer, James: not present John Kalna: I fixed the roller at entrance gate (thanks!). A cat seems to have taken residence in the attic crawl space: I ll try to trap it. Racing: Philippe proposed having two rankings for the Wednesday races: one for the open Portsmouth class (every time) and one for specific classes (when enough boats are present), instead of either / or. This way we ll have enough open Portsmouth rankings to have a meaningful overall ranking for the series. Scott: still working on getting the docks fixed. John Harris: working on fixing the club SunFish. Laura Gayfield: suggested publicizing our open events (Contraband Days regatta, Texas 4000, sailing lessons) in the Convention Bureau s web site and app. Philippe: gave account of sailing lessons (see page 2). The board discussed whether to continue waiving the initiation fee for students who join after completing the lessons. Sheron / David: a few members are very late in their payments. In case of repeated failure to pay, the LCYC can impound / auction boats. Some young adults, some of whom are no longer members, come to the LCYC to drink. So please 1/no beer should be left in the downstairs fridge after parties 2/a member needs to be present when a visitor comes to the club. Thanks! The club again hosted the Texas 4000 on 9 June. See page 4 for photos. The racing season is still going strong! We ve had good weather overall, and a solid number of boats on the water. Let s keep this up! 2 2 On the water: sailing lessons (5-9 June) The sailing lessons were a great success! The weather cooperated and we had no crisis, so John Kalna s rescue boat didn t have to rescue anyone. Students seemed to have a blast and we had 6-7 enquiries about new memberships. - On Monday there was no wind (it rained just before), so we used this opportunity to go over safety rules; sailing lingo; the basics of sailing; and how to rig a SunFish. - On Tuesday the forecast called for T-storms but the weather turned out OK, though quite windy. Trainees went out one on one with instructors (we had enough volunteers to get all 6 boats on the water at once). We taught them how to steer, trim the sail, and right a tipped-over boat. - On Wednesday students went out as pairs: one strong student with a weaker student on each boat. Everyone made it back safely. Students then joined members for hot dogs. - On Thursday we organized a mini-race to mark B, A, B, and back to the beach (see photo below). The tacking was not pretty, but everyone made it around the course. Members also put out the Flying Scot and a catamaran so that students could try different boats. - By Friday most students were able to go solo. I took them out one on one for their graduating exam : tack upwind to mark B and back. Members again put out the Flying Scot and a catamaran so that students could try different boats. Students then joined the Texas 4000 for jambalaya. Many thanks to all the members who helped: John Harris (prepping the boats), John Kalna (rescue), Mary Unglaube (paperwork and registration onshore), and all the volunteer instructors: Jonathan, Alex, Ralph, John, Scott, Hector and I m probably forgetting a person or two. -- Philippe Girard

3 On the water: 7 June (end of Wednesday series 2) I didn t participate because I was too busy with the sailing lessons. Full results below. Weather: sunny, with a light breeze. Things went well in the race except when Jim tipped over in the water. Other club members helped beach his boat, bail it out, and bring it back safely to the slip. The boat and the skipper seem OK but the electronics probably suffered.

4 On the water: Texas 4000 (9 June) The Texas 4000 stopped by on 9 June as they do every year. They re cycling from Austin to Alaska to raise money for cancer research. The group seemed a bit smaller than usual, but very nice and happy to be there as usual. Laura, Mary, and Summer made sure they had something good to eat (jambalaya) and Guy Richards saw them off in the morning. See you next year!

5 On the water: Series 3 race 1 (14 June) A new Wednesday series began on 14 June. Nice weather. We finished off the jambalaya left over from the visit of the Texas 4000 cyclists. After the race there was some discussion about the racing rules because I crossed the line 2 seconds early to avoid bumping into Richard Unglaube. I then slowed down by two boat lengths (that s what I ve seen the pros do on the America s Cup); Scott Cesar told me I should have done a 360 instead. After some digging, it turns out that neither penalty was correct: in case of an early start, the offending boat should simply re-cross the starting line (see rule 22.1 below, bottom of second column). For most other issues (like hitting another boat that has the right of way), the penalty is two 360s; except for hitting a mark, which only requires one 360. For the longer version of the rules, Al Rees recommended checking out this source:

7 On the water: Flag Day regatta (17 June) Flags were flying high for the Flag Day regatta on 17 June. Winds (mostly from the SW) were very strong before the 1 st race. Stuart Thibodeaux even had a little mishap when his boat took off from the beach before he could affix his rudder! John Kalna got on the rescue boat and brought him back safely. Winds eased up as the afternoon went on; I wish they had stayed strong because I was able to get close to Walter s mighty Hobbie 18 in race 1 11 boats were there at the start. No one flipped, but everyone was tired from all the wind and sun that day. Walt was ahead of the pack throughout and finished first in the multi-hull category and overall, even after deducting his handicap. Altogether, a fun day on the water! Many thanks to Mary and Paul for putting together a BBQ feast after the race in honor of father s day.

10 On the water: Series 3 race 2 (21 June 2017) The race was cancelled due to Tropical storm Cindy. On the water: Series 3 race 3 (28 June 2017) From James Latour: There were 10 boats that signed up to race with good winds. The X mark had drifted to the Northwest due to Tropical Storm Cindy, so the starting and finishing line were shifted to a different location in the lake. The race course was a triangle, with the first mark being G. We will reset X mark before the next race. See you next Wednesday and hope everyone has a good 4th of July, On the water: Colorama exhibit Check out the Colorama exhibit at the LC museum downtown! It has some nice old photos from Kodak advertisements on the 3 rd floor, including this one about the joys of sailing a SunFish. Have pictures you want to share? them to pg245091@hotmail.com
