1 March2013 Volume 45 Number 03 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Pete Prados I think it is great that our club offers so many events and programs throughout year. The clubhouse was busy in February with seminars on: rules and tactics, race management, and introduction to sailing. March will provide a lot of activity on water with Spring Series kicking off, TSA Youth Regatta, and J-22 Regatta. Earlier this month, I was approached by Austin Yacht Club J-24 Fleet Captain about ir members participating in our Spring Series races. We are doing our best to accommodate approximately six boats. The February Board of Governors meeting was very productive. The various committee chairs are already involved with ir programs, some of which have already started. The Security Committee made a very comprehensive presentation on improving security around property and marina. Monies were budgeted for this purpose and implementation is forthcoming. The Administrative office is always very busy in January and February preparing tax forms, setting up accounts for new officers, preparing new membership cards, updating Membership Directory, processing membership applications, handling payroll, paying bills, etc. Our Treasurer and Club Administrator do a wonderful job and deserve a lot of credit for ir efforts. The New Member Orientation was well attended and much to credit of Lynn Simpson who was coordinator of this event. These are interesting sessions and I always learn something new about club from m. Thanks to all of members who participated. "Skipper's Meeting" Pen & Ink The pen and ink drawing pictured below is work of former LCYC member & Flying Scot sailor Fred Dorr. Stationed in San Antonio with Air Force, Fred was transferred to Alaska where he flew refueling tankers and taught art at University of Alaska. The drawing depicts LCYC marina as it looked in 1974 and is entitled "Skipper's Meeting." This copy is number seven of a limited edition run of one hundred. Thanks to Bob Taylor who loaned piece to LCYC for scanning and placement in Ditty Bag. Welcome NewMembers Taylor Johnson &... 2 CanyonLakeWindstorm Pete Prados Canyon Lake experienced mph winds and rough seas on Monday, February 25. The LCYC marina and property took a pretty good hit, but re was no serious damage. Our D&G crew worked late into evening resolving a number of mooring issues and documenting problems to report to respective boat owners. Please join me in doing our part to help our employees by making sure that our boats are properly secured with safe mooring lines and that roller furlers and sail covers are strapped in place to withstand high winds. Docks&Grounds Rick Cioppa It s been a busy month for Docks and Ground crew (Josef, Donny and Jimmy). They have finished replacement of rotting telephone pole border in various places around club grounds with treated railroad ties. Phase two of kitchen remodel has started with painting (it has really brightened place up), and we are currently waiting on cabinetmaker to come in with an estimate. Once that is done and we have a schedule, we will begin demolition so floor can be replaced. Next in priority will be pressure washing and sealing Sunfish and Youth docks. At this month s Board of Governors meeting, funding for phase one of security recommendations was approved (surveillance cameras for docks), which will be a high priority. Also planning and design is in progress for rewiring of C dock and installation of waterlines to all docks. Docks&Grounds wısh lıst During year re are some unanticipated items that are needed and/ or would help staff perform ir work in a much more efficient manner. Also, re are items that surface which can easily improve operations and enhance appearance of our facilities. Following is a list of items that were not budgeted which I would like members to consider donating to club: (12) American flags complete with poles...donated by Sandra Walker (1) Welding unit complete with spool runner... Donated by Brian Mikiten (1) Complete set of Calphalon cookware...donated by Ray & Kathy Leubner Deck chairs, cooler seat & accessories for Tiki Taxi.. Donated by Robert Reeves Please contact D&G Chair Rick Cioppa or Commodore Pete Prados if you are interested in making a donation. 4 Youth SailingInstruction Kate Gomes I t's almost springtime again here in Texas, which means LCYC Annual Spring Fling TSA Youth Regatta. The event will be held on March 16th and 17th with youth participating from all over state. Kellie Terrell and Bill McVey have organized a great event this year. We are hoping for a huge turnout! For youth in our club who have never raced, come out and support youth sailing! You can eir race or just hang out and observe what you are missing out on! There will be spectator boats available and tons of racing fun out on water! Coming up in April we plan to officially kick off youth program mark your calendars for Saturday, April 20. That morning club holds its Spring Work Day and we are trying to get as many young people out to make sure our youth boats and docks are ready for season. We will n break for lunch followed by a special introduction class to our new boats. We recently acquired a Laser Pico and an Escape Mango. Since you still need to be signed off to use club boats, representative from Youth Sailing Committee will be re to demonstrate rigging and sailing of se new additions! If you are interested in taking out one of se boats please be sure to attend so you can be signed off. I can't wait to get out on water on se two new beauties! Everything has been put in place for 2013 youth summer programs. Chris Besch will be running his acclaimed Youth Sailing School on May and This is a great introductory program that draws a large crowd, so sign up early! Following Chris' sailing school, he will hold a four day Youth Race Camp from June This has also been a popular program at club and a great way to ease into racing components of sport! Immediately following race camp summer youth camps begin on June 17 and run through July 26. These are week long camps run at eir beginner/immediate or advanced level. This is sure to be a great season as we have obtained two new and exciting youth boats; we are going to begin focusing on double handed sailing for our advanced sessions. Children need to be at least eight years old to participate in any of summer youth programs. All of sign up information can be found online at our website. For furr questions please contact me, Kate Gomes at lcycyouthsailing@yahoo.com. TSASpringFlingRegatta Kellie Terrell LCYC will host Texas Sailing Association's Spring Fling Youth Regatta on March Youth sailors (ages 7-19) from all over Texas will race Optis, Laser 4.7s, Laser Radials, and double-handed 420s. We re looking forward to seeing our LCYC youth racers out on water for this regatta! 2013 will be ninth year for LCYC to host a TSA Youth Regatta. We typically have over 70 youth sailors and ir families come to LCYC for regatta! The kids and ir parents love coming to our club where racing is great, camping is fun, food is delicious, and hospitality is fantastic! The Spring Fling Regatta has become one of LCYC s biggest sailing events, second only to Wurstfest! It takes between volunteers to host this event in kitchen registration and scoring on water on docks! There are still several volunteer positions available so if you d like to help out, please contact Bill McVey ( ) or Kellie Terrell ( ; ) to sign up. It s a great way to support youth program, have fun, and watch some amazing young sailors! 5 YouthSailing LCYC W ith advent of 9th Annual TSA Spring Fling Regatta, this is a good time to take a look at evolution of LCYC Youth Sailing Program. Certainly re have always been parents, older siblings and/or or family members/friends who have taken on mantle of sailing instructor for youngsters of LCYC. While re may very well have been some sort of program in very early days of club, this short history relies upon old issues of The Ditty Bag dating back to early 90s as well as input from Sandra Lindsey and Bill McVey and Kellie Terrell. The Learn to Sail classes in place at LCYC 20 years ago consisted of Adult Sail Training run by Dick Edwards and John Instructor Chris Besch and future sailors. McGinty heading up Summer Board Boat classes, latter being open to adults as well as kids 10 and older. By 1995 John had help of former graduates VanEtte Christian, Sandra Lindsey, Ruth Madorsky and Sandra Walker as well as help of seasoned sailors Chris Christian, Fred Lindsey and Lee Woodbury. Every summer a grand time was had by all; only boats used were Sunfish and if re were more kids than boats many thanks to Sandra Lindsey, Bill McVey and Kellie Terrell for ir help with this article. - Kathy Leubner - Coach Kate Kellie Terrell & Bill McVey youngsters simply sailed two to a boat. The final day of class consisted of a race around island and back to marina. In 1996 Bubba Harris and Mike Stellato were lead instructors with 19 registrants and 23 volunteers. A summer Youth Sailing School made its first appearance in summer of The program was built on tradition of Summer Board Boat Classes, but was only open to kids. For two weekends in May, Ben Youngblood served as lead instructor with help from Sandra Lindsey and Roberto Villareal. The program was so successful that follow-up activities were announced in June Ditty Bag of that year. A Beginning Racing Class was held on June 29th, with a Mini Branch Long Distance Race on July 4th to showcase everyone s hard work and enthusiasm. While Ben continued to teach over next several years, he had major help from Sandra Lindsey who acted as Youth Activities Coordinator and Program Director. Added to mix were numerous LCYC volunteers who donated ir time and expertise to help se young people develop both skills and a passion for sailing. In 2004 program received a major shot in arm from Dan Busher, Bob Gross and Barbara Springer. Dan had been a member of Tulane Sailing Team in college and both he and Bob had young sons. With help of Barbara Springer summer Youth Sailing Classes continued, however TSA (Texas Sailing Association) youth regattas also beckoned and that meant sailing Optis. Bob Gross came to rescue by purchasing four old Optis from Austin Yacht Club for $50 each. Several LCYC members adopted each of se boats, took m home and transformed m into good sailing vessels. Bob n gained Board approval for four new sails and fleet was ready to roll. That fall Dan took his sons, Michael and Joey, along with Coleman Terrell, Daniel Fernandez and Thomas Young to a few of TSA Regattas. By end of year Dan was lobbying TSA to include LCYC as host of one of 15 Youth Circuit regattas. 6 TSA Youth Regatta at LCYC. Of major concern was time of year and possible wear conditions way too cold and dangerous for kids. Evidently same was also true for LCYC sailors, as at that time re was no winter board boat series at this time for some of same reasons. However, a champion in form of incoming Commodore Bill McVey was waiting in wings. Thanks to his several one-on-one discussions with Board members who had been opposed to idea and an earnest belief in potential benefit both Opti Fleet TSA Regatta to kids club, proposal was approved in January 2005 with first Spring Fling Regatta held in March of same year. With not much time for planning, Bill & Millie McVey and Peter Young went into overdrive recruiting and planning. Millie planned meals, recruited galley volunteers, procured all of food from Sams, and led meal preparations for first 6 years! And of course that first year was absolute coldest and dreariest ever and hugely successful. The kids came prepared and LCYC had plenty of Swiss Miss hot chocolate! Our members were amazed and impressed with sailing skills of se youngsters and guests loved our lake, our club and our hospitality. That first year drew 43 sailors and event has steadily grown since n, with a high of 73 sailors to date. Preparing for this event is much like getting ready for first weekend of Wursfest Regatta registration, meals, on shore and on water crews and LCYC community, as always, steps up to plate to ensure that this event is both fun and successful. Dan Busher and Peter Young both ran Youth Program until 2007 when Dan moved to SC for a new job, at which point Peter took responsibility for next few years with lots of help from Bob, Barbara and Bill. By time Kellie Terrell assumed reins of LCYC Youth Sailing ( ) she had help of Chris Besch as Youth Sailing School and Race Camp instructor. By end of 2011, feeling that re were more young sailors out re, Kellie and her Youth Committee proposed a multisession Summer Sailing Camp to Board of Governors. This time around, no second vote was required and program was set to launch in summer 2012, search for a certified instructor being next task at hand. Enter Kate Gomes, known as Coach Kate to LCYC youth sailors. Kate hails from Richmond VA, where she grew up sailing on her parents Flying Scot. She was an active member on her college sailing team at Christopher Newport University, and has worked as a professional sailing instructor and program director since graduating from college. After a very successful inaugural year, 2013 Summer Camp will consist of six sessions offering instruction from beginner to advanced levels. Coach Kate was such a hit with both kids and parents that LCYC has asked her to take on additional year-round teaching responsibilities. Junior Sunfish Sailors This year witnessed anor changing of guard when Kellie Terrell stepped down as Youth Committee Chair. That position, having grown over past several years in both scope and time commitment, is now divided between two people. Harold Simmons is now Youth Committee Chair while Kate Gomes is LCYC Youth Director/Instructor. We wish m, and all those involved with program, continued success. In meantime, remember that March 16/17 is 9th Annual TSA Spring Fling Regatta and volunteers are needed. Once again Kellie Terrell and Bill McVey are spearheading this event. Please contact m if you can help enthusiasm of se young sailors is contagious you are guaranteed to have a good time! Women'sSailingProgram Lynn Simpson Registration will begin on May 15th class size is limited, so be sure to sign up early. The class dates are July 6 & 7 for learn to sail, and July 27 & 28 for advanced sailing class. 7 RACE CommitteeBubba Horner J/22Regatta This was of our worst wear day for our races in a long time. Got a persistent wind shift to east just before start of race #5, and postponed for 15 minutes to allow adjustment of course. J-22 and PHRF-A were given a 6 for total of 4.2 NM. PHRF-B given a 4 for total of 2.8 NM. Temperature was in mid 50's, very foggy, with light drizzle, with wind 6-12 mph out of 135 degrees. We were unable to see windward mark at any time from RC Boat. I was cold and wet all afternoon. Thank Lord was over dressed, but still cold. Sylvie and her friend, Brad, helped Jake and me on RC Boat. Really nice to have back up when recording finishes in PHRF fleets. Wayne Eckstine and Lee Woodbury took care of Chase Boat duties and did a great job, as usual. See our web page for complete results. Keith Zars won 1st place by one point from Linda McDavitt from AYC. Ray Leubner won PHRF-A and Pete Prados won PHRF-B fleets. Both had to throw out 2 first places! Great meal prepared by Nancy Wickman and her helpers. Scott Wells leading Chris Powers after rounding leeward mark heading upwind on port tack. J-22 fleet preparing to round leeward mark.. The J/22 Texas Circuit returns to LCYC, with first stop in 2013 scheduled for March We expect excellent springtime wear, highly competitive racing and as always, exceptional hospitality provided by our LCYC volunteers. NOR and registration information will be posted to Circuit Regatta page of LCYC website. PHRF-B fleet shortly after start of race.. I don't know how many times I've said what a difference a day makes, but today, Sunday, was a much better day for sailing. Great that it was board boats because really cannot stay dry in a Fish. Temperature at least 15 degrees warmer, good wind at 335 which held until end of race 9. Last race given a windward finish, as it placed finish near our breakwater opening. Keith Zars had Lacey Zars, Brian's wife, as crew. Was her first time on a sail boat. Very fast learner. Went from 5th place in race 7 to winning Race 8. Keith was in 1st place, with Bill McVey in 2nd rounding final leeward mark for a windward finish in race 9. Chris Powers split tacks and got a "Cinderella" shift to get a bullet in final race and also 1st place overall in Winter Series for Scots. Good job Chris! Were some very good sailors in Scot fleet. Please see final results on our website. Only two sailors in Fish class. Chris Besch won all three races, but Seth Cunningham really put it on Chris at start of race 8. Seth had a perfectly timed safe leeward position start, and steadily pulled ahead. Seth did not have boat speed of Chris, so impossible to hold back Chris. Chris won Winter Series in Fish, but Seth came in 2nd overall for series. Chase boat manned by Wayne Eckstine and Lee Woodbury. They dropped windward mark at 320 degrees. All afternoon wind tried to veer or clock to due North, only to settle back to original direction. They took finishes for 9th race. Jake Mathis and Bubba Horner took care of RC boat. Lynn Simpson, Sylvie Mathis, Bob and Marila Middleton, took care of feeding sailors. Great fellowship, lots of cerveza and much BS. Did mention will reduce 2 turn penalty to one turn on course in open water. Will keep 2 turns inside of 3 boat lengths at marks and starting of races. Will post on East window of Club House in a few days.
