It is hard to believe that December is just around the corner! November zoomed on by with three busy weekends of back to back regattas. Leading the pack we had the 2 day Regattas of Wurstfests I & II. The club on both weekends was packed with sailors, boats, and trailers. Vice Commodore Phil Crane did an outstanding job as The Wurstfest Regatta chair. It was definitely smooth, smooth sailing throughout the two weekends. For the third weekend, LCYC was host to the J22/J24 circuit regatta. Another busy weekend, and in true LCYC fashion volunteers stepped forward to lend a hand in the galley and on the water. Thank you, to the many volunteers who helped with the regattas. We could not pull off major events such as these, without you stepping forward to volunteer your time. Thank you. Looking ahead to December, on the 1st LCYC will host a Merry Ole Christmas Party. A Turkey dinner with all of the trimmings will be the fayre that evening. The Commodores Grog is on December 9. Dinner will be served at 5:30 pm. Let there be Grog. Yes, there will be tasty, lip-smacking, Grog made from a secret recipe that calls for the finest of ingredients. Following dinner we will play a game of trivia. Ahoy mateys, I ll see you there. On November 14, Property Manager Josef Scherm retired. Josef began his employment with LCYC in 2003 and will be honored for his 13 years of service at the Annual Meeting. LCYC wishes Josef, all the best as he begins a new chapter in life called retirement. On October 30, LCYC welcomed aboard the new Property Manager Jim LeTexier. Jim experienced firsthand LCYC s busiest time of the year Wurstfest! He is doing a great job. Please be sure and introduce yourself to him the next time you see him at the club. Well, this is my last Commodores Report for The Ditty Bag. I will be hanging up my Commodore s hat on December 31. It has been an incredible honor to have served as your Commodore. 2 Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Carolyn Popp From a Port Captain perspective, there were no scheduled social activities for November as it was all hands on deck for Wurstfest I & II during the first two weekends followed by the J22 & J24 circuit races on the third weekend. That's not to say there wasn't a lot of socializing at LCYC! Both events were well-attended with many off-lake guests, plus all the races and meals required a ton of assistance. Sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered. December, on the other hand, is packed with opportunities to get together with friends and reminisce about this year and look forward to next. We have over 60 people planning to attend our Merry Ole Christmas Party at the clubhouse on this Friday, December 1 at 6:00 pm. This is a casual affair hosted by Lonna & Joe O'Brien and Carolyn Harris. Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes & gravy will be provided by the club. Just remember to bring your favorite holiday dish to share. And, if you wish to participate in the gift exchange, bring a wrapped gift not to exceed $15.00 Hopefully you have already RSVP'd for another festive occasion, our Annual Meeting & Dinner to be held on Saturday the 2nd at the River Crossings Club on Highway 281. This dressy occasion begins with a cash bar at 6:00 pm followed by the business meeting at 6:30 pm, then dinner and awards at 7:30 pm. Be sure to set aside the following Saturday, December 9th, for our yearly Commodore's Grog at 5:30 pm in the LCYC clubhouse. Lynn is preparing an excellent spread of Lasagne Noel, salad, garlic bread, Merry Cherry Cheesecake, and of course, lots of grog. Arrrggghhhh! Monday, January 1, 2018 is our traditional First Things First event a long distance race followed by a good luck (black-eye pea) dinner in the clubhouse. WOW, this year has just flown by. LCYC hosted a plethora of events in the galley over the past 12 months and we simply could not have done it without all of you who stepped up to the plate (no pun intented) to share your time, talent and love for our club. Co-chairing this position has been great for us we've worked well together, covered for each other when either had to be away, helped each other put names and faces together (this is a good position for doing that), and had lots of fun in the process. FYI, Vivian Miller, a newer club member, will be joing the Port Captain team in 2018 working with Ann. Carolyn is retiring from the galley for a well-deserved break. 3 Wurstfest Regatta Phil Crane The 49th Annual Wurstfest Regatta is in the books! By all measures it was another successful event with 199 boats racing over the two weekends supported by 162 volunteers. There were some interesting side events this year including a TOMA Multihull Championship dubbed the Extreme Freshwater Edition on the Friday before WFR I. We also had the manufacturer of the UFO Foiling Dinghy in attendance and he gave a seminar on the UFO that was very well attended. Thanks to Charlie Mayer for helping arrange both of those events. There were also many Aeros in attendance and a demonstration of that boat was held in the upper parking lot that Friday as well. Although not perfect, the wind and weather held on to give the sailors just enough challenge to produce some good racing and there were trophy presentations for the deserving. We had Sea Scouts for our flag raising to honor America and the Opa and Oma representative from Wurstfest to help us kick off both weekends. The food was delicious, the raffle was fun and the bands were rocking. From the feedback we all received, it appears that a good time was had by all in attendance. None of this would be possible without the support of so many. First, we would be remiss if we didn t thank our Sponsors one more time. Their support is so important to the WFR success and we should all do our best to support them all year long. And of course, the volunteers. As noted above 162 people stepped forward and helped in some way. Finally, there is one more group that deserves recognition and that s our Docks and Grounds Staff. Jim, Donny and Julian helped make everyone s job a little easier. They were on the spot whenever they were needed and never hesitated to ask if there was anything with which they could assist. So, one big final THANK YOU to all. I m incredibly honored to have been able to help guide the 49th Wurstfest Regatta and look forward to being on the team next year for the 50th edition of Wurstfest Regatta. 4 Note from the Treasurer Renee Kizziar D uring both November and December the club s regular invoice commitment the 25th day of the month falls during holiday periods. Please be understanding if your invoice does not arrive in your until the holiday is past. Besides, this means that payments received through that time will be posted to accounts as current too! Docks and Grounds Dave Sanford D ocks and Grounds had a very busy several weeks with all hands on deck supporting the Wurstfest Regattas and we were happy to be part of the team again this year. We welcomed aboard Jim LeTexier, our new Property Manager, the week before Wurstfest and certainly indoctrinated him well! We say Farewell and Following Seas to Josef and thank him for his many years supporting LCYC he will be missed! We completed many projects since last reported and with Jim at the helm in D&G there are many more planned. The monthly boat slip and dry storage inventory was completed and the waterfront looks pretty good and getting better. Many who slept aboard their boats commented we have a noisy Marina. If you could please tighten up your rigging it is scaring away the fish! You probably already heard the scuttlebutt about Zebra Mussels, an evasive species that has invaded Canyon Lake and are attaching themselves to the bottom of your boats and our docks. Sailing with them on the bottom of your boats is like dragging an anchor and being keel hauled now will certainly leave a mark! Thanks for checking your snubber lines. This winter we could get a few storms that will certainly test how well your boat is secured. Drydock boat storage has some challenges and as Jim puts it, many of the boats have been forgotten and frankly it is looking more and more like a boat salvage yard vs. boat storage. Please take the time to check on your boat it needs you as much as you need it! 5 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle Merry Christmas! As we wrap up this year of sailing, we look forward to continuing our efforts to build our program, update our fleet, and encourage the youth in our club and community to get out on the water more! Like most of us in the club, Wurstfest dominated our November. We had two exciting firsts Dylan Tomko sailed in his VERY FIRST REGATTA and placed 3rd in the Opti Fleet; and Caleb Fogle moved up and competed in the Laser Radial Fleet for the first time. Congrats, Dylan and Caleb! We look forward to you both racing in 2018 in our club racing and the TSA Youth Circuit. We have some important dates to pass on for 2018 the TSA Youth Circuit announced their tentative schedule. These 2-day regattas are a great way to improve your sailing skills meet new friends and have loads of fun! We will once again host our annual TSA Regatta the Spring Fling Regatta on March We are looking for a better LCYC turnout this year. It s a great introduction to fleet racing, very low-threat, historically a great weather weekend, and most importantly the easiest traveling you ll do all season!
