1 June 2018 Volume 50 Number 6 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Phil Crane Summer is upon us! Children are out of school, the temperatures are rising and the water is warming. All are sure signs that activity at our club is going to increase. It s already begun. The Spring Series has been completed and the Longneck Multihull Regatta was raced over the 19th and 20th of May. Travis Mitchell described challenging but fun (according to him!) conditions on Saturday and said they finished just before the rain on Sunday. Thanks to all the sailors (especially our own LCYC competitors) and everyone who helped with the regatta. Memorial Day will already history by the time you read this but I m sure it will have been another great Carl Hawkins Fish Fry and longdistance race. June also holds the beginning of the Summer Series; now is the time for the fair weather sailors to get out there and sharpen their sailing skills on the race courses. We have the always anticipated annual Summer Breeze Party on the June 9th. Break out the colorful shorts, shirts and hats and join in for an evening of fellowship and fun. And don t forget the Leukemia Cup Regatta. There is a wine tasting and raffle on June 16th at JS Fine Wines and Spirits in San Antonio. We also have a new event Cocktails with the Commodore on June 29th. I borrowed this idea from the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. Ray and Kathy Leubner have graciously opened their home and for a $50 donation I ll be happy to pour your wine, open your beer or mix your cocktail. You should have received a blast with a link to RSVP for the event. And let s not forget the racing, dinner and party over the weekend AND the fact that it s all about raising money for LLS and the fight against blood cancers. June will also bring and Adaptive Sailing day on the 23rd. Contact Bill McVey to volunteer. So, summer really is here. With July 4th around the corner and club activity on the rise let s also remember to treat our fellow and members and all guests with the kind of kindness and hospitality that we are known for and let s make Summer 2019 one we ll remember fondly in the future. Clubhouse and main gate codes will change Tuesday, May 29th (after Memorial Day weekend). Members will be notified of the new codes on their May 25th statements. Please make a note of the new codes so you re not left out of any activities! A member told me he writes new codes on the back of his membership card, which he keeps in his wallet and presumably would always have with him if he is driving through the gate. See you at the Club and on the water! Welcome New Members Julian K. Adaptive Sailing Volunteers Bill McVey We will be hosting our second outing for this year to invite special-needs folks, along with their families and aides, at our club to provide them the opportunity to experience sailing. Our guests for this outing will be coming via the Door-in-the-Wall Texas organization. This is a great organization located in Bandera, founded by a mother of a special needs child herself years ago. They offer various activities during the year for their participants, and sailing at our club has become one of the favorites for quite a few, as we have several folks that have attended multiple times! You might enjoy visiting their website to learn more about the organization at Our schedule is 11 AM- orientation to club and sailboats 11:30 lunch; LCYC provided for both guests and volunteers 12:00 Assign guests to boats 12:15 go to boats, sail 2:45 return to docks 3:00 end of event We would like to have 10 keelboats and skippers and also 10 additional experienced sailors (in case the skipper decides to go for a swim!) so we can accommodate up to 25 guests. 4 Adaptive Sailing Report Bill McVey LCYC held its first Adaptive Sail outing on May 5th. After a solid five days of rain up to and including Friday the night before, the sun finally broke out Saturday morning and we were blessed with a beautiful degree day with a perfect breeze of 8-14 mph! The morning began around 10 am with our lunch volunteers Carolyn Harris, Mary Lindsey, Lonna and Joe O Brien, arriving to start preparing lunch. Our guests this time came to us via Operation Comfort. They were families of seven wounded warriors and their spouses and children, 18 in all. Previously 25 had signed up but with the week-long bad weather, a couple families had opted out a couple days earlier. At 11 am we gave a short welcome/orientation to sail boating, teaching the basics of sailboat parts, what makes a sailboat go, and a little about our right-of-way rules. If I remember correctly, none of our guests had ever been on a sailboat before. At 11:30, guests and volunteers were treated to a delicious lunch of perfectly grilled Nathan s hot dogs, with chips, cookies, and iced tea. At noon we assigned guests to our nine boats and headed for the docks. The sailing was wonderful, especially thrilling in the bigger puffs when even the bigger boats were heeling degrees! Most guests had a chance to steer the boats and adjust sails everyone we saw from the boat I was on had big smiles and waved happily as we passed! Everyone returned to the docks by 2:45 and that ended the day s outing. Parting comments simply expressed thanks to our club and volunteers for affording them this wonderful opportunity for a day at our club. In addition to those I mentioned above, please join me in thanking these members who also helped or offered to help; Sue Radley, Leslie Heath, Meribeth Shea, Bill and Ann Cook, Jerry Anderson, Bruce Dunn, Bog Godlewski, Pete Macler, Arnie Wilenken, Jean Junker, Ron Popp, Charlie Ahrens, Fred Day, Ray Leubner, Ken Schaefer and grandson Travis Hartman, Don Muir, Larry Green, Terry and Roger Beasley, and Dwight and Patti Stickles.28 volunteers in all absolutely wonderful and telling about where the hearts of our members are!! Bylaws Revisions Renee Kizziar, Treasurer Lake Canyon Yacht Club ( LCYC or the club ) operates under a set of Bylaws. These Bylaws are printed in the back of the Member Directory and are posted on the membership page of the club s web site. The Bylaws provide a broad framework for the club. Revisions to Bylaws can only be made by a membership vote. Often these votes are accomplished in connection with the LCYC Annual Meeting because the Annual Meeting always already involves the election of Board of Governors ( BOG ) members and a Vice Commodore. The LCYC BOG has identified some Bylaws revisions that will be submitted to the membership for a vote in the course of the 2018 Annual Meeting. If you have a revision to suggest, please contact Renee Kizziar at treasurer@ lcyc.net or These suggestions will be reviewed with the BOG and with those submitting the recommendations. Thank you for your interest in your club. LCYC Member Jim Fish on a Ship in California 4 June 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

5 2018Commodore'sBreakfasts Kathy Leubner The Mother's Day Breakfast was a resounding success. Bob Rupp greeted everyone at the door, handing out white & red roses to all the women. A delicious meal of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and fresh fruit was served up by Fred Day and his merry band of chefs. Taking a break from the galley, the same chefs took a turn as troubadours, serenading the crowd with their rendition of A Bicycle Built For Two. Ann Cook provided musical support by playing guitar along with Fred Day. The June Father's Day breakfast will be hosted by Sherry Willis and the gals of LCYC. The men have thrown down the gauntlet. No doubt the women will respond with a fabulous meal. Stay tuned for entertainment! The meals are always fabulous. We appreciate you getting up at the crack of dawn in order to cook for all of us. Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Vivian Miller What would our club be without volunteers? Certainly not as active or vibrant or filled to the brim with the sailing and social activities that we currently enjoy each month. For this past May, thanks are in order for Elsa & Glen Graham and Laurie & Margaret McGill who hosted the spring series boardboat and keelboat award dinners respectively, and to Lancine Justin who assisted with both. Kudos to Fred Day and the LCYC men for once again providing breakfast on Mother s Day. These guys are becoming the stuff of legends, not just for their excellent menus, but for their entertainment value as well. And then we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Lindsey family for another successful Memorial Day fish fry! And special thanks to Jean & Bob Drew who hosted the big event and organized all the sides and desserts that club members contributed. Yes indeed, we appreciate (and continue to need) ALL our volunteers. Although May saw several longer and warmer days, we have a couple more events planned in June before summer officially begins on the 21st. You do not want to miss our annual Summer Breeze party on Saturday, June 9. It will be hosted by Lonna & Joe O Brien and Carolyn Harris who have proven themselves the perfect team for this gig in the past. They are quite prepared to redefine LCYC as Margaritaville and turn out perfect cheeseburgers with all the sides, desserts and drinks of your choice. The band, Island Texas, will play your favorite Jimmy Buffett tunes, plus this year we ll have a photo booth where all you parrotheads can make a memento of the occasion. You don t have to bring a thing except a laid-back attitude and a big appetite. Wear your island attire and do remember to RSVP on or before June 6 (see Wednesday e-blast.) The fun begins at 6:00 pm. Be there or be square! The next, pre-summer event is our Commodore s Breakfast on June 17 to celebrate Father s Day. Sherry Willis will lead the LCYC women in preparing southwestern breakfast casseroles, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fruit and Bloody Mary s. There may even be an entertainment factor to rival that of the May Commodore s Breakfast! Stay tuned. Below is a peek at upcoming events. Although we have the host slots filled, we still need volunteers to help with the setup, prep, serving and clean-up, so don t hesitate to offer your services by ing PortCaptain@LCYC. net. Thanks to those of you who have already come forward and to those who will assist in the future. It s a great way to meet folks and learn more about the club. 6 Cat Corner Travis Mitchell It s been a busy few weeks for catamaran sailors in the Texas Hill Country area and Canyon Lake Cats-Fleet 128 has hit the ground running. On April 28th and 29th several sailors in our fleet competed in the Hill Country Regatta on beautiful Lake Bucannon. This regatta was put on by Austin Cats and held at Black Rock Park near the end of the lake. Grassy flat ground, fine gravel and sand made beach launching a snap and it s always a cool site to see so many boats in a row rigging and raising colorful sails. The full moon and cool weather Friday and Saturday night made for excellent camping in small cabins and tents right and the waterfront. 16 boats registered for the regatta including our fleet s Joe Monosmith, Drew Riddle, Stephen Acquart, Kirk McMullin, Davis McMullin, Travis Mitchell, Jeff Hiller and Will Rottgering. This regatta also attracted sailors from the Galveston area, Dallas and one all the way from Oklahoma to join in the competition. It was like old times with four solid fleets including a Formula 18, Hobie 18, Hobie 17, and Hobie 16. There were three or more boats per class, so a Portsmouth fleet was not required. Saturday s wind was just enough to make the boats crawl at a snail s pace, so everyone was stealthy quiet as they silently worked on strategy and tactics to out- inch the boat next to them. There were a few gusts up to 6 mph but only for short moments at a time. If you ever wanted to compare sailboat racing to rubber ducks in a bathtub this was it at its finest. Sunday was a much different day with wind around 12 to 15 mph, so the cats really came alive and began to do what they were made for go fast! After four races on Saturday and three more on Sunday the regatta was a wrap with trophy awards for the race committee, chase boat crews and winners of each class. May 19th and 20th Canyon Lake Cats hosted and competed in the Longneck regatta at Lake Canyon Yacht Club. The days leading up to this event showed wind reports that frightened some and excited others. 15 boats were brave enough to register for this regatta with white caps on the water and sustained winds in the upper teens at 8:00 AM on Saturday. There were three F-18 s making a class, five Hobie 17 s making class, three Hobie 16 making class with the rest of the boats rounding out in the Portsmouth fleet. Roger Poe was the PRO for the weekend and advised a mandatory lifejacket rule for all sailors as the winds were predicted to build throughout the day. Backing up Roger on the Tiki Taxi was his daughter Rita, LCYC s Rick and Kim Mella and Carrie Craft from Austin. LCYC s new skiff got a work out as chase boat 1 run by Glenn Graham and Fred Day while Richard Galloway and George Irving took their position on chase boat 2. Docks and ground s Julian and Donnie did a great job to have all the equipment and boats gassed up for the weekend so once the skippers meeting was over the boats hit the water and headed for the race course. By the 11:15 start the wind was a sustained blow in the low 20 s with gust around 26 to 27 mph making for some huge wave action across the lake. Just behind the starting line boats were struggling to stay in control and were pounded by waves while waiting for their start to come up. The race committee had their hands full trying to manage the course in high winds and did a great job to pull out four races before calling it quits as the wind built with gusts to 30 mph. It was carnage on the water with pitch polling and flipping boats all around. One boat dismasted and had to be towed in just to go back out later, de-mast again, and had to be dragged back into to the dock a second time. Travis Mitchell and Jeff Hiller won the award for the most capsizes with either four or five in one day. Sail batons were falling out, one boat completely turtled twice, and another boat slammed into the dock while coming back in at the end of the day. When the boats were right side up they simply screamed across the lake. Charlie Mayer with his S-9 was up on foils most of the day flying along like a jet fighter. The chase boat crews had their hands full at times moving marks and assisting downed racers while trying to find a safe harbor from the wind in-between races. At the end of the day everyone had fun, and no one was hurt other than their pride and sore muscles. With the day s racing over and everyone back at LCYC some took a cool dip in the pool to cool off while others took a hot shower to sooth the aches and pains. Dinner for around 50 was being prepared by host Donna Mitchell and team to include a Burger Bar that may have rivaled top restaurants. Pictures cannot do justice to the buffet style dinner and desert that was the hit of the regatta. Special thanks to Theresa Guenther and Meredith Rogers on the grill and to Donna Mitchell for providing a well-earned meal to some worn out and hungry sailors. Charlie Mayer provided music on the deck while everyone shared stories of the day.sunday s forecast showed a high chance of rain and thunderstorms, but Roger Poe and team got the course set up early for two additional races before the skies turned dark and began to rumble. With much lighter wind compared to the previous day it was a nice reprieve that made for some fine but short-lived sailing. Roger and Rick were keeping a close eye on the approaching storms and made a good call to bring the fleet in early. Just as everyone approached the dock the clouds opened up, dumping rain on everyone followed by lightning and thunder. After about a 30 minute down pour the sun came back out as everyone loaded their boats and prepared to make their way back home. Up on the deck Charlie Mayer was hard at work on with scoring with racers eager to know the results of a wild weekend. The Longneck trophies this year were newly designed regatta shirts featuring Canyon Lake Cats Fleet Logo and Longneck 2018 as a reminder of what a cool regatta it was. We hope everyone comes back out to participate again next year with an even larger group of boats. Canyon Lake Cats-Fleet 128 would like to thank Lake Canyon Yacht Club for the use of their fine venue on the best lake in Texas! continued on next page 6 June 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

7 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle The TSA Youth Circuit visited Houston Yacht Club over the weekend of May. Caleb Fogle and Dylan Tomko (HYC) competed in the Laser 4.7 and Opti Green fleets, respectively. The wind was especially strong, with gusts near knots playing havoc on all fleets and racers. Everyone survived, though the days were not without their challenges. Congratulations to both racers for tackling the winds and waves with determination! The next TSA Circuit Regatta is closer to home waters at Austin Yacht Club on June 2-3. In the May club racing, Caleb and Zach Zinn again raced in the Laser Radial in the Portsmouth fleet. They finished 1st and 4th respectively in very light conditions. This was the final weekend in the Spring Series, giving Caleb a 1st Place series win, and Zach a 3rd place for the Series. Congrats to both of them! As summer draws near, we will be resurrecting our Open Sail Days on most Sundays from 12 noon to 4pm weather permitting. All members and their families are invited to join us. Bring your own dinghy or windsurfer, or use something in the club s fleet. 8 Spring Series Racing Chris Powers The boardboat fleet's luck with wind hasn't improved. We got one lightwind race in on May 6, struggling through a lot of wakes. This got us to a grand total of two races in the entire Spring Series. Jeff Foerster won the Flying Scot race to take the series, with fleet newcomer and new LCYC membership applicant Fred Soward in second. Dave Sanford won both Sunfish races with Dayna Fogle in second for the series. Caleb Fogle won both Portsmouth races, with Chris Fogle in second for the series. Great series for the Fogles! The keelboat fleet finally got some decent wind. We got two races of good length completed, under warm sunny skies. Fred Lindsey won both J/22 races with Bruce Dunn's renamed Alyssa in second. Phillip Davis won both PHRF Spinnaker races aboard Shiraz to get into a tie with Gustavo Medellin, with Shiraz winning the series tiebreaker. Jack Mogab won all four races in the Non- Spinnaker series. The Big Boat fleet had three different race winners in four races, with Bill Clark winning Races 1 and 3 to take the series on Cascabel, with Joe McDonough in second. Charlie Mayer was the only Multi-hull to complete three races. Upcoming events include the Summer Series, Memorial Day Distance Race, Leukemia Cup, July 4 Distance Race, and July 28 Moonlight Distance Race. Please note that the June Boardboat Series races will be June 3 to avoid conflict with Flying Scot North Americans in Dallas June All Flying Scot sailors are encouraged to consider going to NACs, as it is a rare opportunity for it to be so close Chris Photo courtesy Travis Mitchell Loft website: from tiller covers to sails an excellent product at a competitive price Lindsey Marine - Texas Rep Quotes: fred@lindseymarine.com Voice/Fax: complete rigging service for SS standing rigging & lifelines specializing in fiberglass repair & refinishing bottom jobs - complete boat maintenance Lindsey Marıne Fred Lindsey FM 306 Canyon Lake TX Voice/Fax: fred@lindseymarine.com 8 June 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club
