1 August 2017 Volume 49 Number 8 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Lynn Simpson Summer is in full swing at LCYC. The first week of July was certainly action packed. Leading the pack was the Leukemia Cup Regatta. (LCR) Wow, it was quite a spectacular five star event! Two days of racing, a delicious Saturday evening dinner, a knock-out silent auction, a stellar band, and another delicious spread for Sunday s lunch. The fund raising efforts; phenomenal! Oh, and then we made the front page of the Herald Zeitung, (New Braunfels newspaper) - great pictures and a full account of the weekend that overflowed onto page 3! Ray and Kathy Leubner, as well as Phil & Barbara Crane each get a standing ovation for the many hours they invested to pull off such a fabulous event! Thank You. Thank You, also to the many volunteers that stepped forward to lend a hand in the galley, with race committee, the silent auction, some working shifts for both days. Again, Thank You! On the heels of The Leukemia Cup Regatta was the July 4th picnic. Hosted by Steve and Stacy Wilson, who by the way pulled off another Five Star Event. With a successful LCR and picnic behind us, there was a breather of three days before the weekend rolled around, and the pace picked up again. The weekend started with the monthly Board meeting all 40 minutes of it, yes, this is correct, a 40 minute Board of Governors meeting. Thanks to all who attended the meeting, and kept business short and to the point! That afternoon the keelboats raced the second race of the Summer Series. On Sunday there was the Commodore s Breakfast, another delicious spread hosted by Ron and Carolyn Popp. Thank You. Rounding out the weekend was race 2 of the summer series for the Board Boats. Pretty amazing, even more amazing is the fact that so much activity took place in the span of a week! Outstanding! I m turning the tables now. There are a couple of things I need to address about the clubhouse or more specifically, the galley. On Monday July 10, I was informed that the cleaning lady entered the clubhouse and smelled gas. Upon checking the stove she found that one of the gas burners on the stove top was open. This could have been very dangerous. Please, if you use the stove make sure that the burners are turned off. The food items and condiments etc. that are stored in the pantry and cupboards are not for individual member use. These items are purchased by LCYC and used by LCYC for the many events that we host. Last item: Comal County has issued a Burn Ban that went into effect on July 7 at 06:00 am. How does this effect LCYC? The grills located by the pavilions cannot be used during a Burn Ban. While the grills are off the ground they do not have lids. Under the ban, the only grills that can be used are those that are off the ground and have a lid to control sparks. Last item: The 50th Anniversary Celebration. There is a detailed write up on the big event that is included in this edition of the Ditty Bag. Please be sure to read the article. That wraps it up for me for this month. See you at an event or better yet, on the water! 2 Women's Sailing Program Lynn Simpson On July 22 & 23 a group of eight students completed the Learn to Sail course with smiles, delight, and an eagerness for more practice. Despite 100 degree temperatures, the wind contributed to some wonderful on the water practices and learning. The morning classroom instructions included; sailboat parts, parts of a sail, wind awareness, tacking, jibing, safety considerations, departing and docking. The afternoon lessons were spent on the water, putting into practice all that was learned in the morning classroom sessions. Throughout the two day class, energy, enthusiasm, and the desire for Women's Sailing Class July more learning were running high! It was an absolute delight for me to be at the helm of this class. I was really fortunate to have four experienced sailors helping with the on the water sessions. Thank You goes to: Jessica Powers, Robin Engel, Terry Beasley, and Rita Richardson, for sharing their time and talent. Thanks are also extended to Bill McVey who each year graciously loans his boat Good Grief, to the program. See you on the water! Thank You From the Office Treasurer Renee Kizziar The "possible suspension" warning list in July was the shortest in a long time. Thank you to all of you for being responsible about paying your club bills, especially during the summer! The office spends both time and money notifying members who are at risk of being suspended, so your attentiveness is much appreciated. 3 SEW-MAD Women's Regatta Lynn Simpson It is SEW-MAD time! LCYC s annual women s regatta will take place on Saturday August 26. Over the past two year s turnout for this event has been phenomenal. We certainly need to keep that momentum going; by doing so we continue the tradition that was started 27 years ago by Sandra E Walker (SEW) And Ruth Madorski ((MAD) The timetable for the big day: 11:00 am Fleets Set 11:30 am Competitors Briefing 1:30 pm Start of Race 1, Races 2 & 3 to Follow. 5:00 pm Dinner and Awards Entry Fee: $10.00 The competitors briefing will include a brief overview of the planned race courses, racing rules, and starting sequence. Following the races a delicious dinner of barbequed chicken, potato salad, beans, salad, and scrumptious dessert will be served. The celebration really gets underway with the awards presentation, sipping on champagne, and raising our glasses to many hearty cheers and hooray s. As of last year, the regatta proudly boasts 2 perpetual trophies, one for keelboats and one for board boats. These trophies will be awarded to the boat with the lowest cumulative fleet score of the largest keelboat and board boat fleets. Terry Beasley and Jessica Powers were the winners of last year s trophies. It is time for new names to be added to these awards. Will your name take the honor for this year? It is all possible; the first step is to register! Registration is now open, do not delay, sign up today! For those of you that are still looking for crew, I can help you out! I have a list of eager crew just waiting to be invited to join your team! There will likely be a contingent of women sailors from Austin Yacht Club (AYC) who will be joining us for SEW-MAD. In return, LCYC s women sailors have been invited to participate in AYC s Women s Regatta on October 28. Imagine that, two Women s Regatta s in the span of two months! That wraps it up for me; I ll see you on the water! 3 August 2017 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

4 CHARLES L. BRANCH M.D. LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA Ray Leubner LCYC members, friends and family stepped up to the plate again this year and raised $46,000 for the South Central Texas Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Over the four years LCYC has sponsored a Leukemia Cup Regatta, we have raised $154,000 for LLS. We cannot thank enough all those who have donated money and/or volunteered their time in support of this worthy cause. This year there were 15 fundraising teams which raised a total of $36,000 (including the sponsors they signed up.) Fundraising Teams for 2017 included Gary Kirkham (Team Floridays), Phil and Barbara Crane (Team Stevie Boy), Wayne and Ginny Peacock (Team Peacock), Pete and Jean Prados (Team MiAmor), The Lindsey Family (Team MABL), Bob and Nancy Wickman (Team Habanero), the McGill Family (Team Marlabee), Lynn Simpson (Team LCYC Women s Sailing), Steve and Wanda Edlund (Team Edlund), Gustavo Medellin (Team Canyon Wind), Chris and Debbie Fogle (Team Skeeter), Terry Tomko and Gail Garrett (Team Steve Garrett s Family Motors), Joy Clayton and Marty Chrisman (Team Over the Hill Krewe), Phil Davis (Team Shiraz), and Ray and Kathy Leubner (Team StellaRay). Please remember to thank these team leaders when you see them around the club and pat yourself on the back if you helped them achieve their goal. A total of 10 sponsors donated $9,000 in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. CEMEX, McCracken and Carroll Wealth Management, Peter E. Macler Associates, and Roeschmann Design have been sponsors since year one. Added to this list are the Mittel Cattle Co., Broadway Bank, Glen Graham & Associates, Intruder Alert Systems (Mike Samulin), Capitol Wright Distributing and the continued support of the Branch Family. We are very pleased to welcome Santikos Charitable Trust as a first time sponsor this year. THANK YOU! Saturday evening was a combination of good food, partying and celebrating another successful fundraising campaign. Anu Day, Joe and Lonna O Brien and their teams of volunteers including Sue Radley, Mary Lindsey, George Irwing, Fred Day, Phil and Barbara Crane, Susie Boedeker, Ray and Elizabeth Blankenberg, Brigida Donahue, Debbie Fogle, and Stacey and Jerry Gibson looked after dinner on Saturday and lunch Sunday. It s an enormous amount of work for which we all are very thankful. Music by Ed Read and crew was good fun! This year's Silent Auction raised $4,079, a new record! Laurie McGill, Ed Booth, Lancine Justin, Kathy Leubner and team put a lot of work into collecting and displaying items for this year s bidding. THANK YOU to all those that donated one of the 53 items auctioned off, an eclectic mix if ever there was one. This year s regatta fielded 22 boats racing in 4 classes. There was virtually no wind first thing Saturday for the buoys portion of the regatta, so the postpone flag was up for more than an hour. The RC decided to get a short length race in and before you knew it, the wind picked up, and up, and up. Good wind prevailed Sunday for the Long Distance Race. First place finishes went to Fred Lindsey in PHRF Spinnaker for the 4th year in a row, Harold Simmons in Non Spin A, Margaret Mcgill in Non Spin B, and Drew Riddle in PHRF Trimaran. Chris Powers in his Flying Scott raced with the spin boats and made an excellent showing. The first spinnaker keel boat to finish the long distance race was Phil Davis in his Melges 24, winning the traditional Branch Long Distance Race trophy. Jake Mathis and his Race Committee of Rick Mella, Jim Ritchie, Marvin Arnold, Jack Carter, and Hans Kohler did a great job running the regatta. Let s also thank Claudia Roeschmann, Kathy Leubner and Elizabeth Bentzen for their efforts designing this year s logo & graphics, putting out event publicity, and keeping the LCR web page and LCYC web site current. A special THANK YOU goes to Donny Ahr and Josef Scherm. Docks and Grounds, as we ve all come to expect, pulled it all together with little fuss. Photos are posted to the LCYC Leukemia Cup Regatta web page. And just in case you missed it, the Herald-Zeitung ran a front page article on July 14 entitled Setting Sail Against Cancer. Thanks to Linda Kondziela for setting up the initial contact. 4 August 2017 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

5 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle In just another month, school will begin for most of you it s not too late to get that last sail in before hitting the books. July started with a bang and great wind, and then slowed considerably as everyone took their vacations. We started the month with some unfortunate news an injury to Coach Ben put him out for the rest of the season. We wish him well as he heads off to college this fall, and a speedy recovery. As a result, we cancelled most of our Open Sail Days in July, but we hope to restart them in August when our volunteers return. Stay tuned to the weekly blasts for more information. Some great news, now! Congratulations to Davis McMullan on earning his US Sailing Instructor Level I certification in July! It s great having one of LCYC s own achieve this certification, and we look forward to Davis continuing to share his love of the sport with other youth in the coming years. Way to go, Davis! Not much racing for our youth in July. Lakewood YC in Houston hosted the annual TSA Texas Race Week. No LCYC team members participated this year, but we hope to change that next year. Caleb came out to race in the summer series races last month. He had his mom crew for him in the Laser Pico for the Portsmouth division. Could this be a new trend!?? They had three 2nd place finishes way to go! If you still have not checked out our new Facebook page please visit and Like us. You can search on Facebook to find us. This is the best way to keep up on what all we are doing. See you on the water! Youth Sailing Dates August 5 Race clinic/practice Youth Dock, 11am - 3pm August TSA Regatta; Palacios, TX August 12 Club series Keel Boats August 13 Club series Board Boats Open Sailing Days August 19 10am - 5pm Answer to last month s What am I? What Am I? See the answer in next month s Ditty Bag I m known by several names, but suffice to say I m a chart. A map of the ocean, if you will. I was used mostly by Polynesians as they traveled long distances across South Pacific Ocean. The shells represent islands; the sticks are the patterns of ocean swells and waves around the islands. The swells bend around islands, and the sailors knew this from observing them over many years. Sailors would navigate by matching the swell patterns as they traveled the seas. Look me up on Google and see more about me! 5 August 2017 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

Lake Canyon Yacht Club Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Carolyn Popp Well, for all of you who attended, you know how successful the 4th of July Picnic was! Hamburgers, dogs, all the fixins, sides and desserts, music by Pandora, lots of sunshine, swimming and sailing, too. It was a HUUUGE turnout with approximately 150 members and guests enjoying the food and the fun. The clubhouse and grounds were decorated in an all-american, very patriotic fashion as we celebrated our nation s birthday. Special thanks to Steve and Stacy Wilson for hosting this event and for assembling a group of able assistants that included Marta Pugh Weslyn, Mary Lindsey, Ray Blankenberg, Elizabeth Schultz, Spencer Bowington, Charlie Mayer, Robert Crider and Ann Cook. The July Commodore s breakfast was hosted by Ron and Carolyn Popp who also had an awesome crew. Appreciation and kudos to Gabby and Ava Hayes, Gary Kirkham and Donna Rice who came to the galley on Saturday to prepare most of the food; then on Sunday Jan Broyles helped with last minute prep and serving and Allen Broyles assisted with clean-up. The menu included miga casseroles with fresh veggies, avocado, salsa, etc., sausage, fresh fruit, yogurt, champagne, OJ and coffee. It was a very colorful (and flavorful) spread. The Shrimp Fest hosted by Ed Booth and Lancine Justin is coming up on Saturday, July 29th with music provided by Jazz Blues and Diamonds. Remember to bring a half pound of large, raw, headless, shell-on shrimp per person. (Approximately 33 large shrimp per pound.) You don t want to miss this one. Bill and Sally Bittick will be hosting our August Commodore s breakfast on August 13th from 9:00-10:30 am. Watch for their menu in the blast next Wednesday. We would like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of you who have stepped up to the plate to host and/or crew one of our many social events. You have made our job sooooo much easier and you are very, very loved and appreciated. See you at the club!
