1 March 2018 Volume 50 Number 3 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Phil Crane While I always strive for concise reports this month s may set a standard that will be difficult to match going forward. And while there hasn t been a lot going on at our club since my last report, some of what s been accomplished has been very important. So, let s start with what may be the most important accomplishment this year the extension of our lease with the Corps of Engineers. As most of you know, we lease our property from the Corps and leases do have terms that expire. Fortunately, as good stewards of the property we lease and through the efforts of Pete Macler we did receive a new lease extending our leasehold rights for another ten years. The lease has been reviewed by our legal counsel, Jim Kizziar, approved by the Board of Governors and executed on the club s behalf by me as current Commodore. We can continue to enjoy what I think most of believe to be one of the prettiest spots on Canyon Lake for a few years before we have to think about the renewal again. Let s continue to be good stewards not only of our property but of Canyon Lake. Another action that s been undertaken is that a task force has been formed to review the safety procedures during regattas. This is in response to an incident on the lake during a race that caused those involved to rightly question some of the equipment on hand and procedures to be followed under certain circumstances and conditions. Pete Macler as head of our Safety Committee and Chris Powers as Rear Commodore of Sail are leading this task force. Debbie Fogle, Joe McDonough and Jim Kizziar are assisting them in this effort and I will work with them to come forward with recommendations that assure that the safety of participants in our regattas is paramount. With that I will report that weather continues to delay our pool deck project but also discourages anyone from using the pool anyway! It has also proven to be challenging for the club series causing them to either drift or cancel. But this too shall change and hopefully our Adult Sailing Classes, Spring Series Races and the TSA Spring Fling Regatta (volunteers still needed!) will either have had or have perfect conditions. Check out the Port Captains report and the calendar for other upcoming events. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. And please go sailing! I hope to see you all at the lake! 2 5th Annual Charles L. Branch M.D. Leukemia Cup Regatta (LCR) June 30 & July 1, 2018 LCYC s fifth annual Leukemia Cup Regatta (LCR) will have its kickoff event during the April 15th Commodore s Breakfast. Please plan to attend and learn about the progress being made in the fight against blood cancers. Leukemia Cup Regattas are hosted nationally by a group of about 45 yacht clubs whose goal is to raise funds for the benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America (LLS). Last year, they raised about $5 million for LLS in the fight against blood cancers. Over the past four years of LCYC s participation, $154,000 has been raised for the South Central Texas Chapter of LLS! Commodore Phil Crane has asked me to lead this effort once again this year. I will be reaching out in March to former and potential new committee members and fundraising teams. Committees include Fund Raising, Publicity, Food and Race. Of course, I want all those who made last year s regatta so successful back again, but we need to dig deeper as well. Last year, 15 very active fundraising teams, 9 sponsors, and a great silent auction were keys to our success. Join a great team and have some fun in support of a very worthy cause. Please call me at or at rleubner@satx.rr.com if you want to help in any way. With July 4th falling on a Wednesday this year, the BOG approved June 30/July 1 as the dates for this year s LCR. This regatta can be thought of as a one-weekend Wurstfest Regatta. So many volunteers are needed, both on-the-water and on shore. Please sign up the sooner the better for planning! We ll follow our traditional 2-day race format, with one day devoted to The Branch Long Distance Race and the other to buoys racing. Following the racing on June 30th, there will be a BBQ dinner, silent auction, and live music. That evening, awards will be presented to sponsors and fundraising teams. Trophies will be awarded to competing fleets on Sunday afternoon. LCYC is giving back. Let s keep the momentum building! Ray Leubner 2018 LCR Chair TSA Youth Spring Fling Regatta Volunteers Needed Debbie Fogle A few volunteers are still needed in the kitchen to make this event run smoothly. Please consider helping if you can. Many thanks to all who have already committed to helping out, but a few more would be great. If you are interested, please contact Carolyn Popp at or cpopp@gvtc.com. A few volunteers are also needed to do ramp duty; helping to launch and retrieve the boats and also to manage traffic flow at the ramp during this busy weekend. Many thanks to those who have already volunteered, but another 4 to 6 hands would make the job complete. 3 Learn To Sail Program The LCYC Annual 2- weekend Adult Sailing Class began February and will complete on March 3-4. The class is full with 30 students, 5 of whom are LCYC members. The others have either never sailed before or have had very limited experience. They almost all learned of it from our LCYC website. The class is being supported by about of our 25 LCYC members in various capacities, teaching the morning classes, handling check-in duties and preparing morning coffee, skippering their boats, or sailing as crews for the afternoon Zebra Mussels H sessions on the water. It is interesting to note that it has been normal for the club to receive 2-3 new applications for membership every year from people taking this class, as they have been very impressed by the facilities and benefits of belonging to LCYC, but most of all by the friendliness of all of the members they meet, and quite a few are now counted among our most active and involved club members! Next month's Ditty Bag will have a complete report on the Class results. Get Well Soon Dr. Edwards Hans Micklitz Dr. Patrick Edwards, LCYC Member No. 37 and Big Red skipper, was involved in a vehicle/pedestrian accident near his home on January 30 while on his daily morning run. He was seriously injured and remains in the hospital at this time. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery and hope to see him again on the water real soon Rocky Hill ouston, we have a problem. My boat is on A-dock 112. I routinely check my boat and lines. On my last check I pulled up a small line that had been submerged for quite some time on one of my bumpers. There they were, barnacles in fresh water. Zebra Mussels. This presents a new problem to address for club members with boats in slips. 3 March 2018 Bill McVey There are boats that rarely move from the slips for months and even a few that haven t moved for years. Having said that, boat owners that rarely use or maintain their boats will have a serious problem and can choose to address the problem or ignore it. If you elect to ignore it your boat, overtime will become infested and basically a static display for marine biology research. I suggest the following: Haul your boat out and get a bottom job. Have one of several vendors clean your bottom on a three-month interval with you boat in the water. Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

4 Going Clean and Green at the Spring Fling Regatta Debbie Fogle LCYC Green Team The TSA Spring Fling Regatta is just around the corner and we are excited and proud to announce that we have been working with both Sailors for the Sea and Clean Seas Turn the Tide on Plastic in order to make a difference in the health and well being of our playing field the world s oceans and waters. Our partnership with Sailors for the Sea s Clean Regattas Program gives us a checklist of things we can do at the club level in order to start making a difference. Leading up to, during and following this year s regatta, we will be working with Sailors for the Sea to minimize the impact our regatta will have not only on Canyon Lake but also on our oceans. The program lays the foundation for our sailors to make clean choices not only as they sail but also in their daily life. Our biggest goal this year is to reduce the amount of single-use water bottles the sailors use this year. We hope to discourage their use all together by providing the sailors with water bottles that they will be able to refill not only all weekend but also all season! May not seem like a big deal, but there is 8 million tons of plastic entering our oceans each year and that number is growing. The Spring Fling Regatta will not add to that number this year. You can do your part too, if you don t already have one, buy a refillable water bottle and use it. If you must use single-use plastic containers, make sure they go in the recycle bins conveniently located around the yacht club. It is easy to Turn the Tide on Plastic just by being more aware of our daily habits and how we use plastic: there are a lot of alternatives out there. For more info on both of these great efforts check out the Sailors for the Sea website (sailorsforthesea.org) and the Clean Seas website (Cleanseas.org), they are both packed with ways to make a difference. Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Vivian Miller It seems Punxsutawney Phil was right... we ve definitely had more cold, rainy, damp, misty, soupy days since February 2nd. Not exactly a typical Texas winter! In keeping with the inclement weather, there were relatively few happenings at the clubhouse last month. On Saturday, the 10th, a create-your-owntaco awards dinner was held for about 35 keelboat racers, but the final winter series race (and dinner) for boardboats on the 11th was cancelled due to forecasted cold and heavy winds. However the Commodore s breakfast hosted by Joe and Lori McDonough earlier in the day went off without a hitch. About 45 members and guests enjoyed scrambled eggs, sausage, some delicious streusel and fruit with their coffee and mimosas. We have a new event scheduled for March, an Italian Night dinner on Saturday the 24th at 5:30 pm. The menu of pasta with homemade sauces (meat and meatless), salad, bread, and limoncello tiramisu will be prepared by your port captains. Tom and Claudette Cozzi will assist with hosting and you need bring only one item for the shared antipasto table--something from the following list: green or black olives, salami or other cured meat, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, pickled vegetables, cubed cheese, or bruschetta. Be sure to RSVP for this dinner as we want to prepare enough food for all attendees. RSVP here: goo.gl/forms/ NCW2e3gVccK0mVyL2 And don t forget the Commodore s breakfast on March 11. It will be prepared by Georgina and Ed Taddia, so you know the spread will be special. We could still use assistance with several upcoming events. portcaptain@lcyc. net if you are willing to help with one of the following: Spring Work Day (Sat/28APR) - hosts needed for breakfast and lunch Spring Series Boardboats Award Dinner (Sun/06MAY) - host needed Spring Series Keelboats Award Dinner (Sat/12MAY) - host needed Memorial Day Fish Fry (Mon/28MAY) - host needed See you on the water or at the club! 5 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle A little over 2 weeks to go before TSA racers descend on our home waters for the TSA Youth Circuit on March 17th-18th. It s a Spring Break highlight and we invite everyone to come on out extend a warm LCYC welcome to the many racers expected to be here. Better yet we need your help. We currently do not have enough volunteers to man our race committee and safety boats. Please, if you can help us one or both days, please contact us at youthsailing@lcyc.net so that we can get you into the plan. The NOR for the TSA regatta is posted on the TSA website go check it out and get signed up soon. We re also hoping to have pre-regatta fun sailing activities on Friday, March 16th. Even if you re not racing, come on down to the waterfront around noon and jump in a boat. We had a great meeting in Florida at the US Sailing Leadership Forum at the beginning of February. Some highlights: We tested some new boats that would make good fleet trainers and racers the Hartley 12.2, RS Quest, and Topaz Argo are the ones we like. Check them out and let us know what you think. A greater appreciation for team racing. This exciting format is proving to be great fun for adults and youth, alike. We are lining up some guest coaches for a clinic in the future. Stay tuned. We were reacquainted with the challenges our sport has getting and keeping youth on the water and sailing. We are interested in hearing from you about how we can do our part here at LCYC, and we welcome you to join us to make it happen. 6 2018Commodore'sBreakfasts Kathy Leubner A delicious breakfast is THE best start to a productive day and LCYC volunteers have already provided us with two such feasts. The Incoming Board took over the galley in January. Terry & Roger Beasley, Glen & Elsa Graham and Carolyn & Ron Popp served up a wonderful spread featuring Terry's Scrambled Eggs Florentine and Glen's homemade banana bread. The February meal was spearheaded by Joe & Lori McDonough and their son, Peter, with assistance from Port Co-Captain Vivian Miller, Lancine Justin and Bryant Bowington. Plenty of eggs and sausage were consumed but the apricot and cherry streusels commanded center stage. You won't want to miss the March breakfast given the inventiveness of hosts Ed and Georgina Taddia. Cat Corner Travis Mitchell For those that may not know here s a little bit of Canyon Lake History1. Long term volunteerism to LCYC Since the 1970 s there has been a Hobie Cat fleet at Canyon Lake, specifically Fleet 128. This fleet is part of Division 6 comprised of the Austin Fleet, our Canyon Lake fleet and the Galveston Bay/Texas City Dike fleet. Over the years our group has changed and is no longer specific to the Hobie Cat brand. We now welcome all types of catamarans and multi-hull boats to our group so if you sail a Nacra, Prindle, or Pulse 600 we want you to sail with us! We now go by the name Canyon Lake Cats-Fleet 128. Please check out our facebook page and see what we have been up to since last year. Our group participates in 4 division races and several other non-division races throughout the year. We host the Longneck regatta each May at LCYC and help with the organization of the multi-hull weekend at Wurstfest Regatta. We have our yearly race schedule posted on our face-book page. Our group holds monthly fleet meetings, typically the last Wednesday of the month. Please check our Face-book page for meting times and locations as we sometimes change up the venue. We get together on weekends for fun sailing and participate in several division regattas throughout the year along with the Austin and Texas Gulf Coast fleets. Even if you don t have a boat of your own we welcome crew members to learn and participate in fast and exciting sailing unlike any other sport. Our group consist of veteran sailors, rookies and everything in-between so there s a great group to learn from and gain experience while flying a hull on a trapeze wire going 20 mph. Some of our fleet members belong to LCYC already and we are searching within the club to find more people that may be interested in what we do. Longtime keel boat sailors maybe curious about our funny little boats that have two hulls rather than just one. If you see one hull up in the air while sailing, a tip over or pitch pole..we meant to do that! Please contact us through face-book at Canyon Lake Cats-fleet 128. 7 Winter Series and Long Distance Racing Chris Powers February brought some interesting racing weather. The annual Winter Distance Race was briefly postponed from the dock with zero wind and a fog bank across the lake. After a half hour, a nice breeze cleared the fog precisely when forecast by PRO and PHRF Spinnaker fleet Winner Fred Lindsey. With clear skies and winds ranging from 5 to 15 knots, racers had an excellent day for sailing. Fred passed Clarabelle in the final leg to win, as did Keith Zars for second place, with all three boats less than 2 minutes apart after two hours of pursuit-format racing. In the Non-Spinnaker fleet, Bill Clark skippered Cascabel to the win, followed by Margaret McGill and Tom McHugh. Keelboats were cancelled after an hour of postponements at the dock, due to lack of wind. Two hours later, I informed the Boardboat fleet that Sunday's races were being pre-emptively cancelled due to a forecast of 20 knots, 40 degrees, and possible rain. Hopefully we'll have better luck for the Spring Series opener in March. Congratulations to Keith Zars for winning the J/22 and Flying Scot fleets, winning every race sailed in both fleets.
