1 August 2016 Volume 48 Number 8 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Sandra Lindsey Flotsam: is a legal term that refers to wreckage of a ship and its cargo found floating on the water. I cannot begin to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in the Leukemia Cup Regatta and Fourth of July celebrations. It was such a fabulous weekend. Ray and Kathy Leubner s expert planning and execution of those plans have resulted in over $42,000 being raised for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Anu Day and Margaret McGill planned a flawless day of fun on July 4th. Joe O Brian has proven to be an expert grill master taking care of the grill for both events. Yet again we have proven what good cooks we have by all of the side dishes and desserts brought to share. I cannot be more thankful for and proud of our club. The days are hot and it is time to spend time inside out of the heat. Are you a landlubber or an old sea dog? How many of these nautical terms do you recognize? If you can use their nautical terms you are definitely an Old Sea Dog. Fathom, Chockablock, Flotsam, Jetsam, Groggy and Bumpkin Fathom: a unit of length, use primarily in nautical measurement, equal to six feet. Chockablock: having the blocks drawn close together, as when the tackle is hauled to the utmost. Jetsam: another word from maritime law that refers to goods cast overboard deliberately which sink or wash ashore. Groggy: means dazed and weakened or intoxicated, the way one might feel after he or she partakes in a goblet full of its root word grog. Bumpkin: is a beam or spar projecting outward from the hull of a vessel. Enjoy the club and see you on the water. Sandra Welcome NewMembers Skip & Melody Morrison... 2 Women's Sailing Program Lynn Simpson The Learn to Sail class took place on July 6th & 7th, and topped out with 17 participants! The class had reached capacity of 14 just 3 weeks after registration opened; with 3 on a wait list I made the decision to expand the class to 17! Although I was somewhat nervous at having such a large class, those nerves were washed away the first morning, enthusiasm was at a high, these women were serious about learning to sail. The class got under way with introductions; we then jumped right into learning the different boat parts, parts of a sail, how a sail works, knots, wind, sailing on a beam reach. After lunch it was boat assignments, we were in good shape having 5 boats and skippers! The winds were perfect for a beginner class. Everyone was able to put into practice what they had learned that morning. Time flies when one is having fun and before we knew it it was time to head back to the docks. Smiles abound, there was a great sense of accomplishment! It was job well done to all. Sunday s class started with a review of what was learned the day before, we then jumped into tacking, jibing, sailing upwind and downwind, basic rules of the road, points of sail and safety. Another afternoon was spent on the water, there was a lot of tacking and jibing going on as the crews rotated through the different positions. Everyone did so well, most rewarding to me was seeing first-hand the sense of accomplishment, the smiles, and the fears that had been overcome. This was a big class and there is no way that I could have pulled this off solo, I am so very grateful to the women skippers that came out to help: Janet Lockhart, Kate Gomes, Margaret McGill, Jill Williamson, Ellen Burks. Ellen is an honorary member who lives in Ft Worth, that s commitment driving that distance to volunteer! Sylvie Mathis was on hand to help out in the class and also on the water. A really Big Thanks to you all. You have opened the door to sailing for this wonderful group of women. Thanks also go out to; Bill McVey, Harold Simmons and Ken Taylor, they offered the use of their boats, for the program, Thank You for your support! Advanced Sailing is next on the agenda; I ll have a write up on that in the September edition of The Ditty Bag SEW-MAD Regatta Ahoy, women sailors! The Women s Regatta SEW-MAD will take place on August 27. This Regatta marks the finale of the program. There s a saying; save the best until last. This is the best; it brings together a group of dynamic women who happen to love the sport of sailing! By participating in LCYC s Women s Regatta we are also carrying on the tradition of the event that was started 26 years ago by Sandra E Walker, SEW, and Ruth Madorski, MAD. Sadly, Sandra passed away earlier this year. We will be honoring Sandra throughout this special day. I know her spirit will be shining down on us as we head out to the race course! Last year was phenomenal, there were 21 boats registered, with 18 coming out to race! That was a record, and each and every one who participated enjoyed a fun filled day. So, now it is time to make the 26th Annual SEW-MAD Regatta an event to remember. This is a Women s Regatta and we race in a very lady like fashion, no yelling and no shouting. The schedule for SEW-MAD: 11:20 am Fleets Set 11:30 am Competitors Briefing 1:30 pm Races start (3 races) 5:30 pm Dinner and Awards. New this year, is a SEW-MAD Board Boat perpetual trophy. The perpetual trophies will be awarded to the keel boat and board boat with the lowest cumulative fleet score of the largest keel boat and board boat fleets. Online registration is now open; Jessica Powers was first to register! Kudos to you Jessica! If you do not have a boat and would like to join in on the fun by crewing or would like more information on the event contact me at: Enough from me. See you at the Regatta! 3 Charles L. Branch MD LeukemiaCupRegatta LCYC members, friends and family stepped up to the plate this year and raised $42,000 ($38,000 in hand plus $4,000 more committed) for the South Central Texas Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!!! For the three years LCYC has sponsored this charity event, we have raised a total of $107,000! WOW! A total of 12 sponsors (7 more than last year) donated $10,000 towards the fight against blood cancers. McCracken and Carroll Wealth Management led the way followed by CEMEX, ROESCHMANN Design, Mittel Cattle Co., Broadway Bank, Cadence Bank, Brookshire Brothers, Capitol Wright Distributing, Glen Graham & Associates, Peter E. Macler Associates, Intruder Alert Systems (Mike Samulin), and William J. Mehrer/State Farm Insurance. THANK YOU! The Fund raising Committee was central to our success. We had 13 teams (3 more than last year) which raised a total of $32,835 (including the sponsors they signed up). Fund raising Teams: Gary Kirkham (Team Floridays), Phil and Barbara Crane (Team Stevie Boy), Wayne and Ginny Peacock (Team J22), Pete and Jean Prados (Team MiAmor), Fred and Sandra Lindsey (Team MABL), Bob and Nancy Wickman (Team Habanero), the McGill Family (Team Marlabee), Lynn Simpson (Team LCYC Women s Sailing), Steve and Wanda Edlund (Team Edlund), Gustavo Medellin (Team Canyon Wind), Chris and Debbie Fogle (Team Skeeter), and Ray and Kathy Leubner (Team StellaRay). Remember to thank these team leaders when you see them around the club. Their efforts were nothing short of amazing! And consider forming your own team for next year s campaign. The Silent Auction was very successful as well, raising just over $4,000! Pat Ketchum, Joy Clayton, Marty Chrisman, Kathy Leubner and team put a lot of work into organizing and seeking items for the Silent Auction. THANK YOU! Saturday evening was a combination of enjoying good food, partying and celebrating another successful fund raising campaign. Laurie McGill and her team of volunteers served some 200 members, family, sponsors, and guests. Joe and Lonna O Brien cooked the pulled pork and sausages. Believe me, it s an enormous amount of work. Jazz, Blues and Diamonds were awesome! THANK YOU ALL!! The regatta portion of the weekend featured 23 boats competing in 5 classes. There was some close racing with decent wind on Saturday for the Buoys Races, and great wind Sunday for the Long Distance Race which everyone completed in hours. The first spinnaker keel boat to finish the long distance race was Gustavo Medellin in Canyon Wind, the winner of the traditional Branch Long Distance Race trophy. A big THANK YOU to Jake Mathis and his Race Committee volunteers for a great job running the regatta. Photos have been posted to the LCYC LCR web page. A special THANK YOU goes to Donny, Raymond, and Josef. Docks and Grounds pulled it all together with little fuss and total success as usual. Ray Leubner, Chair LCYC LCR Port Co-Captains Anu Day & Margaret McGill Whew! It s been busy in the LCYC kitchen for weeks! You will hear about the amazing success of the Leukemia Cup Regatta in another column, so I will tell you about the social events. The July 4th picnic was attended by about 170 people. Fred Day, Steve Wilson and Joe O Brien grilled some of the best hamburgers and hot dogs ever eaten at the club. Glen Graham, Ed and Lancine Booth, Meera Day, Anu Day, Lonna O Brien, Mary Lindsey and Sue Radley kept things under control in the club house, managing service of the wonderful side dishes contributed by members. Will Manos, a relatively new LCYC member, also helped in the kitchen for the first time ever. He must have enjoyed it because he s volunteered to help with the August 20 Dog Days cookout. Sincere thanks to all who helped! The Commodore s Breakfast on July 10th, compliments of the Lindsey family, honored both Lloyd and Mary s birthdays. It was well attended by LCYC members and a whole BUNCH of Lindseys. I ve never seen so much bacon cooked at one time, and I think it was all consumed. Fred and I might have tasted some before serving it, just, you know, to make sure it was OK. It was. Things will settle down a little in August. There will be dinner and trophies for the racers on the 13th and 14th, the Commodore s Breakfast on the 14th, and the aforementioned Dog Days of Summer cookout on the 20th. If you plan to eat after the racing but you re not a racer, be sure to let Joe O Brien know for Saturday and Susie Boedeker for Sunday (and offer to help!). The August Commodore s Breakfast will be hosted by LCYC members living in the Mt Lookout neighborhood. On August 20, members are invited to bring something to cook on the grill. The club will provide salad, baked potatoes and dessert. Be sure to check the official club calendar at LCYC.net, and read the weekly blasts for details as the events approach. See you on the water or at the club, Margaret McGill & Anu Day 3 August 2016 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

4 Spring Series Racing Jake Mathis On July 4th, LCYC held its New July 4th Long Distance Pursuit Race. The event was divided into PHRF Spin and PHRF Non-Spin Fleets. July 4th Long Distance Persuit Fleet Place Skipper PHRF Non-Spin 1 Joe McDonough Jr. 2 Harold Simmons 3 Joe McDonough Sr. 4 Ben Kyzar 5 Harry Sutherland 6 Jim Ritchie 7 Joy Clayton PHRF Spin 1 Fred Lindsey 2 Keith Zars 3 Jim Kondziela 4 Chris Powers 5 Jack Carter Seven Trophies were given. Three each for the top finishers in each Fleet and a Seventh Trophy for Joe McDonough Jr. the first finisher across the finish line. Sailing Instructors Needed! The Junior Sailing Program is growing and we need more knowledgeable volunteer sailors so that we are able to continue improving and expand our program. We are looking for member interested in becoming LCYC Sailing Instructor. No teaching sailing experience is required. Junior Sailing Instructors will mainly teach advanced and the basic of racing level classes. The ideal candidates are flexible, able to multitask and strive to be a role models and mentors. This is a fun, rewarding and challenging adventure that you will learn to love. Junior Sailing Program meets Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 pm. The 2017 season run from February 12th to October 30th, this includes two 7-week Sunday sessions. For more information, please contact Sylvi Mathis at sb.mathis256@gmail.com Register Your Boat If you have your boat in the slips, Steve Edlund reminds us to keep the registration up to date. Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) will visit our docks this year, and boats with an expired registration may be ticketed. 5 JUNIOR SAILING Sylvie Mathis _/) At the time I m writing this article, Coach Ellen Burks is working with the Storm Sailors. The Racing Camp emphasis on speed and sailing in the grove. The syllabus and the lesson plans have been revised, because the Storm Sailors are awesome! _/) We have survived the Summer Sailing School. More than 35 student-sailors learn to sail this summer and 6 Storm Sailors are register for the Fall session (August 14 October 30, 2016). _/) The Fall session concentrates on the Storm Sailors LCYC racing team. Few will be following the TSA schedule and others will be regular member of the Monthly Club Series until the 2017 Spring Fling TSA Regatta. _/) Talking about 2017, here what we have been talking about with many members. From the Junior Sailing Program, we will change the concept to a Junior Club. By taking out the word sailing we would have a Junior Club. To our curriculum, we could add non-sailing experience but related to sailing like Junior Club swimming time. Water sports including windsurfing, catamaran, kayak, canoe, paddle board. The Junior Sailing Program with the progressive sessions: Youth Sailing, Summer Sailing School and the Storm Sailor Team could continue to grow. Too all this we could also add Junior Club Workshops like Race Management courses, Seamanship classes with knots, line splicing and boat maintenance & fiberglass. After completion of all the Club requirements, the Junior will be an honorable life time member of the Junior Club. Okay, this part is just a dream but you can t blame me for dreaming big. Nevertheless drop me a line if you like this idea; and no you will not be ask to help unless you want to help. We have wonderful Storm Sailors that will be more than happy to show your kiddos all the fun we have at their Mom and Dad s Club. _/) The August Calendar: August 13 & 14 - Rockin Rockport Regatta at the Rockport Yacht Club August 14 Monthly Club Series Summer Races with Dinner & Trophies August 27 and 28 Cannonball Run at the Palacios Yacht Club _/) Please contact me at or juniorsailing@lcyc.net if you have any questions or comments.
