1 Volume 45 Number 05 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Pete Prados Race Weekend was great in April with good winds and great meals. Thanks go out to Bubba Horner and his Race Committee, Pat Ketchum and her crew for putting on Mexican Fiesta, and Kannawin family for hosting Commodore s Breakfast. Josef Scherm and his D&G Crew have been working hard to complete Clubhouse Kitchen Remodel Project and it has all come toger very nicely. There are a number of folks who provided input, however, re is not enough room to list m here, but you know who you are. I congratulate you on your efforts. There are a few remaining items after which clubhouse will be complete. The Spring Work Day was a HUGE success, thanks to D&G staff, who handled preparation for projects and follow through, and Rick Cioppa, who coordinated event. Over fifty-five members volunteered ir time for this very worthwhile event. The group divided up into eight teams and logged in over 165 man hours. Much work was accomplished on Youth Dock, Sunfish Dock, shoreline, boat ramp, clubhouse grounds, dry storage areas, and entrance. Some safety items were also completed. The newly completed kitchen was reorganized and stocked. Many, many thanks to all who participated. At April Board of Governors meeting, Harold Simmons tendered his resignation as Rear Commodore in order to dedicate more time to his Youth Committee Chair responsibilities. The Board of Governors and officers sincerely appreciate Harold s commitment and contributions to Club over years. The Club Bylaws procedure for filling a vacant officer position will be followed at next Board meeting. May is going to be a busy month of activities with Adaptive Sailing, Spring Series Races, Mor s Day Breakfast, Youth Sailing School and Longneck Multihull Regatta on schedule. Bring out your catamarans and trimarans for fastest sailboat racing on Canyon Lake. Sailboat racing not your thing? Come anyway. Terry Tomko and crew will be putting on a delicious Barbecue supper at clubhouse Saturday evening to be followed be world famous Longneck Raffle. A good time is guaranteed! Complete details on LCYC website Circuit Racing page. Docks&Grounds Rick Cioppa A lot was accomplished this past month on grounds of club. The club house kitchen cabinets, flooring and new door with a window (by bell used to start meetings) were finished just in time to have a first workout serving breakfast and lunch to our 50 or so volunteers at Spring Work Day. Donnie and Jimmy worked very hard to get everything ready; next time you see m on one of four wheelers working around club give m a big thanks for ir efforts. These guys save club a tremendous amount of money with projects y take on. Paul and Gwen Cunningham, Activities Chairs, took control of kitchen (of course with help of Mary Lindsey) to feed Spring Work Day volunteers with a breakfast of coffee, rolls, pigs in a blanket and juice, with Sloppy Joes for lunch. The Work Day was a big success, with lots of participation from LCYC member-volunteers. The list of tasks accomplished were: pruning of shrubs, both on clubhouse deck and by pool; pruning along fence line and work areas; a good scrubbing of kitchen after its construction; major pruning of view to docks from club house (this really opened up view); collection of trash from around grounds (many bags worth); painting of cabinets on Sunfish dock and supervision by Harold Simmons of a young crew on our new Youth dock. We managed to get a season's worth of projects accomplished in short order, as well as a few safety items including a fresh coat of yellow paint on steps. The most rewarding aspect of Spring Work Day was to see our members work toger with a common goal for good of club. Where else can you get 50 or so people to dedicate ir morning on a beautiful day, do yard work and have a good time while doing so. What a great club! Docks&Grounds wısh lıst During year re are some unanticipated items that are needed and/or would help staff perform ir work in a much more efficient manner. Also, re are items that surface which can easily improve operations and enhance appearance of our facilities. Following is a list of items that were not budgeted but would certainly benefit club: (1) Complete set of Calphalon cookware...donated by Ray & Kathy Leubner Deck chairs, cooler seat & accessories for Tiki Taxi.. Donated by Robert Reeves Playground Equipment (including slide, swings, stairs, etc.)...$3,500 Admiralty Anchor or Fisherman...$1,200 Large Ship's Bell...$1,000 Please contact D&G Chair Rick Cioppa or Commodore Pete Prados if you are interested in making a donation. 3 Memorial Day Catfish Fry Carl Hawkins Can t remember how many years we have been doing this, but it s been a long time & a fun time! Don t forget MEMORIAL DAY FISH-FRY! It s lip smackin fried catfish, out of this world jalapeno hush puppies, butter drippin corn on cob, and lots of great desserts! The only people that have more fun than those enjoying feast are club members that COOK it: Wade Arledge is a good attorney; however, he really raises bar at cooking catfish. Could not do it without Sandra and Fred Lindsey. Royce and Cynthia Hickson drive from Sugarland, and would not miss cooking for fish fry. Royce has a new-fangled cooker this year. He will be turning out all those great jalapeno hush puppies. I will greatly miss Freddie Hawkins this year, but Steve Box is going to try to take his place. If you are looking for me, I will be down on dock catching catfish! You bring salads & desserts, okay? Y ALL COME! 4 AdaptiveSailing 2013 Bill McVey LCYC Artist Wins Award Our first date of May 4th is for Wounded Warriors and ir families. We have sufficient volunteers for this one but welcome anyone else who would like to meet and sail with our guests on that day. Our second outing is set for Saturday June 15. Our guests will be coming from a wonderful special needs program called "Door-in--wall", founded by Barbara Blair in Bandera. We provide lunch, boats, and skippers and crews to take up to 25 people for an afternoon sail. We will need about 10 boats with 10 skippers, and 20 crew/safety skippers. Our guests love opportunity and our volunteers do, too! If you would like to help in June, please me at bmcvey@gvtc.com. We will have two more dates later in summer, August 17 and October 5. The schedule for each session is: 11AM.. Orientation to club & sailboats 11: Lunch provided by LCYC Sandwiches - Chips - Cookies - Drinks 12: Assign guests to boats 12: Go to boats - SAIL 2: Return to docks 3: End of event We like to line up keelboats and skippers and also additional experienced sailors (in case skipper decides to go for a swim!) so we can accommodate guests. We also need two volunteers each date to put out lunch and clean up afterwards. The 15th Annual Canyon Lake Art Group Show was held on April 7th in New Braunfels. Gail Garrett Tomko's 24x30 oil painting, depicting a scene from LCYC, won People's Choice Award. Garrett's canvas is a sprintime twilight view of lake and super dock from boat launch ramp and also showcases tha natural beauty of trees and wildflowers seen at LCYC during that time of year. The painting also placed second in oil and acrylic class. First place went to a ninety-five year old woman who has been painting in New Braunfels area for over 70 years. Garrett's works have been purchased by such notables as astronaut John Glenn and actor John Wayne. The painting will be available for viewing at Mor's Day Breakfast on 12th of May. 2012LifetimeServiceAwards Ruth Madorsky, Pete Prados and Sandra Walker On Saturday, April 27th, Commodore Pete Prados presented 2012 Lifetime Service Awards to Ruth Madorsky and Sandra Walker. Both women have been actively involved in LCYC for past twenty plus years and have demonstrated consistent support of club activities through ir leadership, sportsmanship and willingness to volunteer. Ruth and Sandra were awarded personalized plaques in appreciation of ir service; ir names will also be added to permanent Lifetime Service Award located on McKown Deck. KnotsFromDelaware There is a new link to Tying Knots on LCYC website courtesy of a young student named Rachel from Ms. Ward's 8th grade classroom in Delaware - yes, Delaware state! Ms. Ward's students were enlisted to search out information for ir classroom website, Rachel's assignment being Outdoor Activities, which ultimately led her to LCYC website. The students were also required to find and share a new resource that might be useful to organization from whom y had borrowed information. So check out Guide to Tying Knots on Links Page of website. 5 YouthSailing Instruction Kate Gomes I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who came out on April 20th to help with workday. We had many volunteers, youth and adults, helping out on youth dock getting everything ready to go for season. The Sea Scouts took charge of moving all of Sunfish and Lasers over to ir new home and or youth helped in inspecting and fixing Optis. Bill McVey and Harold Simmons led in operation and made sure everything that needed to get done got done. After a long morning of hard work we were able to kick off youth sailing season with a fun afternoon of sailing. The coolest thing about our afternoon adventure was looking out and seeing an assortment of different youth boats. We were able to get our new Pico and Mango out on water and resurrect C15. Josh Lilley also brought out his Open Bic to sail on. It was so neat to see se returning kids get out on water after almost a year. It was a great afternoon and hopefully a forecast of what is to come this summer. I want to take a moment to congratulate all of our youth sailors for doing such an awesome job at TSA regatta up in Austin. Brandon Cassard and Josh Roper did an excellent job of representing LCYC at yet anor event! Brandon placed 20th out of 45 in Red, White, and Blue Fleet. His top place finishes included two 11's. Way to go Brandon! Josh Roper finished an impressive 3rd place in Opti Green Fleet. This was only Josh's second TSA event and he showed up competition finishing out Sunday with two bullets and a 2nd. Nice job gentlemen! The summer season is rapidly approaching! School is coming to a close and that means that you should be looking for some exciting activities for your kids! Chris Besch's sailing school still has openings for May 18 & 19 and 25 & 26. This is a fantastic opportunity to get your kids out and learning at beginning of season. It is also one of best sailing deals I have ever seen; only $25 for members and $50 for nonmembers for close to 30 hours of instruction! Sign up soon! The summer sailing camp registrations are starting to come in. This is anor great summer opportunity for kids. Please, help us get word out! Get your kids involved - have m get ir friends involved; grandchildren and kids down street will love this! For all details please visit LCYC website s Learn to Sail page! Use of Club Youth Boats Club Boats are provided ro use by children and minor guest of LCYC members who are involved in Youth Sailing Program. The policy for use of se boats appears on following page and also on Youth Sailing page of LCYC website. 2013YouthSailingSchool Chris Besch Ol Man Winter is preparing for his summer hibernation which means wear is warming and water is waiting. For all those future sailors out re, it also means 2013 LCYC Youth Sailing School is fast approaching. The sailing school is designed to teach children from ages 8 to 18 how to sail. Conducted during last two weekends of May, course will include classroom sessions on basic sailing concepts, knot tying, safety, and sailing right of way. On water activities include rigging a sailboat, capsizing and righting a sailboat, basic sail adjustments, steering, tacking, jibing and how to make a safe docking. The emphasis is on safety and avoiding collisions. All participants must pass a basic swim test before progressing to on--water activities. There is a maximum of 30 students, so priority is given to first time participants. These forms will be held on file by Youth Director. The current list of certified users will be kept on a clipboard inside Opti Sail Locker. Each certified user will be notified of new lock combinations upon renewal. -First time Certifications for youth will normally take place during; - four days of spring Sailing Class, normally held in May, - week-long Racing Camp held in June, - week-long Summer Sailing Camps, -scheduled Youth Race days, or by -interim certification by Youth Director or his designated representative. No youth under age of 14 or weighing less than 120 lbs will be certified to use a Sunfish until y are able to demonstrate mastery of boat handling in Optimist in a full range of wind conditions. Repair/replacement may be made and charged to member s account as agreed in Maintenance Agreement. III. Use of Boats 1. Check over boat to be used, note any discrepancies on Maintenance Form. If re is doubt about its seaworthiness, do not take it sailing. 2. Complete Youth Boat Sign Out Sheet in Opti Locker for boat you decide to use. 3. All parts for each boat are numbered. Please do not mix/ match parts from or boats, as it makes inventory control very difficult. 4. After usage, stow equipment, complete Condition on Return on Sign Out Sheet. 5. Complete Maintenance Form as needed. IV. General All youth sailors under age of 14 must be actively supervised by an adult. If youth sailor will be sailing outside breakwater, adult must have access to and know how to use a power boat, and should be on water within sight of youth sailor. The blue club run about boat is available most of time. Youth sailors through age 17 who check out a club boat MUST notify someone at club that y will be out on lake, and provide an expected return time. Failure to comply with contents of this policy may result in a suspension of privileges. LCYC is pleased to provide boats for your use. Since it is impractical for club to have a volunteer on hand at every moment of every day to oversee ir usage, we must count on each of you to do your part to see that boats are used and maintained properly. Thank you very much for your cooperation. 6 DittyBag

8 RACE Committee BoardBoatsBubba Horner With near perfect conditions for sailboat racing, wind mph with gusts, fleet flag was raised at 1300 to start sequence for Scots. Distance 0.5 NM to windward mark. Given a 6, followed by Sunfish with a 4 course. All 6 races had clean starts, with no over-earlies. Had some new faces, which included Ty Johnson, sailing Ray Leubner's Sunfish, Ben Kyzar in Jake Mathis Sunfish and Bryant Bowington in one of my Sunfish, and Robert Crider, sailing one of Harold's Sunfish. Also Robin Engle used one of my Fish and sailed very well. After 2nd race, her husband Harry Surland used her Fish to sail but did not enter race. They really seemed to have a blast. Yellow deck Ty Johnson rounding leeward mark, following him closely in red 10 is Bryant Bowington, both on port tack. Hope y will be active Sunfish sailors. So much more fun to have to make all decisions on your own including all adjustments to sail trim, when to tack, etc. If screw up, don't have crew to blame. Some guys cannot take it, but my experience is that by far best sailors have been thru that dinghy experience. No less than Dennis Conner has stated that when he really feels need to get back in touch with "feel of wind", he sails his Sunfish. My son sailed Lasers for a while and told me that re were two guys that he and Keith could not beat. One was Mark Foster and John Kolius both from Houston area. Mark Foster is a member of our club and past Commodore of Corpus Christi Yacht Club. Not a nicer guy in world. When talking with our Commodore about LCYC sponsoring a one day seminar on Club Race Officer qualification, Pete Prados told me to go for it. We have never attempted anything like that in past. What LCYC has done was set up a North U program by Harold Simmons past 2 years, with great results. Really did not know where to get started, so went to US Sailing, and looked under race management. Alas, guy who is head of all race management in USA, is our own Mark Foster. Address was listed as Ingleside, TX, so felt like maybe had wrong guy. Sure enough, same person as our Mark Foster. In early 1970s was sailing my Sunfish at Seabrook (Galveston Bay). Had new main sheet and would kink easily. Turned over and difficult to untangle main sheet. Than to my great luck, Mark Foster arrived via motorboat, pulled me in motorboat and dove in, righted my Fish, and sailed it back to club. Feel that I owe my life to Mark. That's how far our friendship goes back. I immediately call Mark on his cell phone and told him of my dilemma. Boy did doors started opening up. Within in a few hours our race seminar was set up and ready to go. Will probably be set up on our web page by time you receive "Ditty Bag" from Kathy Leubner. Want to thank Pete Prados, our Commodore for his support and to Randle Moore, who already had June 29 reserved for a Youth function and gladly let us have that date for our seminar. Strongly advise as many racers as possible attend seminar as it is one great learning experience, even if you do not intend to take test to become Club Race Officer. Necessary to change location of windward mark between races 4-5. Changed from 220 degrees to 180 degrees for races 5-6. Dave and Chris had near photo finish in race 5 as photos will show. Main thing is that everyone appeared to have so much fun on water. Board boats have had best wind 90% of races this past 8-10 months. Next few months maybe reverse will be true. Great thing about racing is unpredictability of events. I learn something every time we race. Conditions never same. See our LCYC series for scores. Beer and chips after races. Also lot of BS going down, which is a good thing. Nearly a photo finish as Dave Sanford noses ahead of Chris Besch at finish line. If borrowing a boat to sail, don't wait until a couple of hours before race starts to pick up boat and all needed equipment. In fact, I am sailing my two Sunfish loaners for $1, each complete with everything ready to race. no trailer or dolly. They both have won a ton of races. My only requirement is that must be not just sailed but raced, so as to build our fleet. No racing, no boat for sale. 9 RACE Committee KeelBoatsBubba Horner Anor really challenging 2 keel boat races for Saturday. Winds very shifty, with only fair velocity mph with wind out of 120 degrees. Changed up things a bit. J-22s given a 6, 0.8 NM to windward mark for a total of 4.8 NM PHRF-A given a T2, for total of 3.6 NM, PHRF-B given a G (triangle-w-l) total of 3.4 NM. Had Jake Mathis, Terry Tomko on board. Like 2 of us to record results on PHRF races and Terry worked out perfectly. What a nice guy. Jake and I really enjoyed his presence. Thanks for your great help, Terry. Welcome aboard anytime. Terry seemed to enjoy himself and stated it was a good brush up on running races. 3 Cats were sailing around and got some nice photos of m, including John, Terry's son. Fred Lindsey won 1st race. Bill McVey was right re with him most of race. Keith got buried at start, but worked back up to 3rd place finish. Second race Fred was again in front, but fouled anor boat at leeward mark. Took his 2 turn penalty, but really hurt him. Nice to see sailors following rules. Good show, Fred! Keith told me he hit windward mark and did a one turn penalty. I would have never seen it as he was 0.8 NM away from RC Boat. Again, good to see our racers sailors following rules. Fred never recovered and received a 4th place, which gives Keith series, as Fred did not sail races 1-2 and cannot throw out that 4th place. Keith with has it made. Ray Leubner in his Olson-30, completely dominated PHRF-A fleet. Ray has not locked in 1st place, if Bob Wickman can get 2 first places in May races, he could beat Ray. They would be tied, but Bob would have last 1st place and be winner. Should be interesting races next time in May. PHRF-B has Jack Mogab, Steve and Stacy Wilson in 1st place, but still a crap shoot for 1st place. Chase boat handled by Dave Sanford and Lee Woodbury and did very good job on setting out Jibe mark. Windward to jibe mark was 0.5 NM. Jibe to Leeward mark was also 0.5 NM. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Name of game. June 29, 2013 One Day Race Management Seminar LCYC is pleased to host a one day Race Management Seminar sponsored by US Sailing.
