1 February 2017 Volume 49 Number 2 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Lynn Simpson January has certainly been a busy month for LCYC. The first activity to start off the New Year The First Thing s First Sail. The weather was idyllic for sailing, with at least boats enjoying a New Year s Day sail! In the clubhouse a delicious Second Thing s Second Dinner was served. Of course, the good luck food of the New Year, black eyed peas was on the menu! It was definitely a full house with about enjoying the dinner and New Year Cheer! Other activities include; The Board Orientation Meet and Greet, Board of Governors meeting, Race 2 of the Winter Series for Keelboats, The Commodores Breakfast hosted by the incoming Board of Governors, Race 2 of the Winter series for Board Boats, and The Winter Long Distance Race. Yes, busy indeed! LCYC s 50th Anniversary We will be celebrating this milestone anniversary on October 7. Originally the date was set for July, but given that it is so hot in July, summer vacations, celebrating later in the year is a much better choice. Be sure and pencil in the date on your calendars! As details are finalized they will be announced in the Ditty Bag. There will be a book to commemorate the anniversary Kathy Leubner has volunteered to take on this project. The book will span the 50 years of LCYC history. It will be wonderful to have such a book that encompasses the history of our outstanding club! Thank You Kathy, for taking on this project. Be sure to read Kathy s article which will cover all of the detail regarding the book! Bathroom Renovations The clubhouse restroom renovation is one of the projects of the Long Range Planning Committee for Work on this project will begin during the first week of February, and is expected to take between 8 10 weeks. The bathrooms will be out of commission during the renovation. Porta a potty s (5) will be placed in the parking lot near the clubhouse. Once the project is completed the men s bathroom will house the new women s bathroom and vice versa. The women s bathroom will have 4 stalls (yeah), 3 sinks, and two showers. The men s bathroom will have 3 stalls, two sinks, 2 showers, and three urinals. Each bathroom will have a handicap accessible stall and shower! There will be some inconvenience during the renovation, we ask for your understanding as the project gets underway. I ll provide an update on the progress of the renovation in next month s Ditty Bag. 3 Lake Canyon Yacht Club HappyBirthdayLCYC Kathy Leubner This is the year LCYC will officially turn 50! We will be celebrating this milestone throughout Commodore Lynn Simpson has an LCYC Birthday Bash planned for Saturday, October 7th, so mark your calendars now. The club s 50th Anniversary logo is also making its first appearance here. In addition to all the festivities, LCYC is putting together a commemorative history of the club in book format. Many of us are newer members and not aware of the early history of the club: how its location on Canyon Lake was chosen, the Corps of Engineers hurdles that needed to be cleared and how the marina has evolved from a cluster of mooring balls to the facility we all enjoy today. Add to that the many iterations of the LCYC clubhouse. The original structure was destroyed by a fire in We have been rebuilding an expanding ever since. Current LCYC programs and social events also have their unique histories. Our membership base has grown from 20 founding charter members to a current total of 364. These are the known details. However, there remain lots of gaps. Gaps that can be filled in by club members, both old and new. If you can contribute details, stories and/or photos, contact Kathy Leubner at or ClubHistory@lcyc.net. The deadline for submissions is June 1, Can someone identify all 4 of these people? Looks like a club Work Day, date unknown. SingularMoMentS 30 YearS of leukemia Cup regattas Kathy Leubner Singular moments. They exist for all of us. Decisions and/or random events that change the course of our lives. Certainly, the singular moment for a cancer patient is the day he/she is first diagnosed, followed by the ensuing months of treatment that will hopefully lead to remission. The journey is not taken alone. Lending support are family, friends, colleagues and a medical community dedicated to quality care and discovering a cure. In 1987, Stan Wrobal of the Pine Harbor Yacht Club in Birmingham, Alabama lost his battle with leukemia. A singular moment occurred in 1988 when Stan s fellow sailors hosted the first Leukemia Cup Regatta, designed to honor their friend by raising funds for lifesaving research. The money raised that first year was not earth shattering, but was nevertheless gratefully accepted by the Leukemia Society of America (now LLS.) The Pine Harbor Yacht Club (now the Birmingham Sailing Club) has continued to hold a Leukemia Cup Regatta every year since. The Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia Society heard about the events being held in Birmingham. In 1993 sailors in Annapolis decided to organize their own Leukemia Cup Regatta and called upon Gary Jobson, wellknown sailor and ESPN commentator, to become involved. A year later, Gary agreed to become the National Chairman of the Leukemia Cup Regatta campaign, whose goal was to encourage yacht clubs nationwide to hold their own fundraising events. In 1993 Lisa Thorndike was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. While in Cape May, New Jersey in 1996, she happened across an article describing an upcoming Leukemia Cup Regatta, for which Gary Jobson was also in town. In a singular moment, knowing nothing about sailing or Jobson, Lisa called the organizers and offered to help. She was given the task of taking photos that year will mark Lisa s 22nd Leukemia Cup Regatta. She has also attended events in Colorado, Virginia, Annapolis, Savannah and Washington, D.C. More importantly, she is a dedicated fundraiser, having qualified for 19 Fantasy Sails. She still does not consider herself a sailor, preferring to be a passenger with a captain, a rum punch in my hand, Jimmy Buffett music, and preferably in a warm climate somewhere! Over the next several years, more and more sailing clubs began holding Leukemia Cup Regattas. There were sponsors now and rewards for those raising the most money. In the early days, top fundraisers from each participating yacht club would win a Moorings Cruise. Today, those who qualify can join Gary Jobson for a Fantasy Sail. This year's event will be held October in Annapolis. In 2003, Jobson came face to face with his own singular moment. That was the year he was diagnosed with non-hodgkin s lymphoma. Gary became the recipient of a stem cell transplant, a procedure made possible thanks to the very research for which he had been raising funds over the last 10 years. Today, he remains cancer free and is even more committed to helping LLS accelerate cancer cures and improve the quality of life for other patients and their families. Leukemia Cup Regattas have raised over $58 million dollars for LLS since that first event in Birmingham. Last year 45 clubs raised $3.9 million dollars. This year is the 25th anniversary of Gary Jobson s involvement with Leukemia Cup Regattas. It s a milestone year, a singular moment in which we can all honor both cancer patients and medical professionals in the fight against blood cancers. LCYC will once again host a Leukemia Cup Regatta on July 1 & 2. Over the past three years our club and sponsors have raised over $100 thousand dollars for LLS. Let's build upon that success. Contact Ray Leubner if you would like to be part of this year s fundraising effort. 3 February 2017 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

Yes What is the deadline for nominations? Nominations are accepted by the LCYC Administrator through February 24, Commodore'sBreakfasts Kathy Leubner People love a hot, home cooked breakfast, especially when the weather is cold and dreary. Which is why 50 LCYC members showed up in January to sample the menu put together by the Incoming Board of Governors: Elizabeth Bentzen, Bill Clarke, Anu Day, Chris Powers and Joe O'Brien. Also lending a hand, as well as moral support, was Fred Day. The menu consisted of sausage & eggs, biscuits, sausage gravy, potatoes, fruit and sweet rolls. Coffee, orange juice and mimosas helped wash everything down and no one went home hungry. Robin Engel is taking the lead for February and would love to have some help preparing a delicious pre-valentine's Day menu. Send an to CommodoresBreakfast@lcyc.net if you can join the early birds in the galley. L to R: Elizabeth Bentzen, Joe O'Brien, Bill Clarke, Anu Day and Chris Powers Still needed are hosts for July and August. 5 Winter Series 2 Racing Fred Lindsey and Lynn Simpson For the winter series 2 races, 4 of the 6 registered Flying Scots made it out to the start line. Conditions were pretty good; overcast skies, & 8-12 mph winds blowing pretty consistently East by South at 105 deg. The windward mark was set at 105 deg. A course of 4 was given for the 3 races with a distance of 1.44 nm. The 3 races saw some close competitive racing. Race 1 had its moment. As the lead boat was approaching the finish line, sailing just a little too close to the RC boat, the Scot's mainsheet got caught on the port bow cleat of the RC boat. The skipper managed to free the sheet do the penalty turns, but it cost them finishing 4th! Races 2 & 3 were sailed without any moments! The days 1st place winners: Race 1 Chris Powers, Races 2 & 3 Keith Zars. Job well done and Thank You to the RC team of Jean Junker, Scott and Beth Wells. The final race of the winter series is scheduled for February 12. Chris Powers once again volunteered to be RC for the Keelboat series. He was assisted by Dave Sanford and Bryant Bowington We want to thank to all that have volunteered for RC duty. Remember that these volunteers gave up their day so you could race. I (Fred) still need volunteers for the February keel boat series. Let me know if you can help. 5 February 2017 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

6 Race Management Seminar Lynn Simpson On February 19, a one day Race Management Seminar will be held in Austin. The seminar is for people who have some race committee experience, but newcomers are welcome. Lunch is on your own. Instructor: Matthew Hill - US Sailing Race Administration Director What to bring: Your own copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing. Online Note: The Board of Governors has authorized the reimbursement of the seminar fee for any LCYC RC volunteer that attends the seminar and who then volunteers at least 5 times for Race Committee duties. Race committee volunteers - please consider signing up for this very informative course! I hope to see you in Austin LCYC Spring Fling Regatta Dave Lilley LCYC will be hosting the TSA Youth Regatta on March 11 and 12, Participation in this event continues to grow. Last year we had a very impressive turnout and expect the same this year. As always, we will have the opportunity to share our hospitality, great racing venue, camping facilities, and wonderful meals, all of which have made this event a staple for many on the TSA circuit. The regatta will also give our youth sailors the opportunity share in the competition and camaraderie of their peers. This year we will have following fleets: o Green - Novice sailors ages: 7-15 o White - ages: 7-10 o Blue - ages: o Red - ages: o 4.7 for lighter or younger sailors o Radial for older or heavier sailors Because of last year s unexpected and unprecedented level of attendance, this year we will organize as we do for Wurstfest Regatta. To make sure everything runs smoothly and safely, I believe we will need at least 45 volunteers on the water to staff the three race courses, registration, safety boats, protest committees, spectator boats, ramp traffic, etc. The Notice of Race and the registration page for our TSA Spring Fling Regatta will be online shortly. For more information or to sign up, please go to I also want to take this opportunity to once again ask for volunteers. It takes volunteers on and off the water to make our Spring Fling Regatta a success. Please contact me at David.A.Lilley@gmail.com if you would like to help on the water. If you would like to help in the kitchen, please contact Michelle Lilley at Michelle.M.Lilley@ gmail.com It's "School" to Sail! 6 February 2017 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

7 Adult Learn To Sail Class Bill McVey Volunteers Needed I hope you are looking forward to another great year of sailing starting out by volunteering to assist with our adult sailing class this year, during the weekends of 2/25-26 and 3/4-5! The 2-weekend format we began several years ago has been very well received, with high praise and appreciation of our volunteers and club for offering this course to the public. Registration opened just two weeks ago and we already have 14 people signed up, with others indicating they intend to, so the outlook for a full class of 30 appears very likely. In order to have a maximum of two students per boat we would like to have 15 skippers and boats, and 15 additional crew/backup skippers. It is also very helpful to have a volunteer make coffee each morning. Many of our club members have helped with multiple prior classes and it would be great to have other members join in the fun. It is very satisfying and rewarding to introduce new people to our sport. I would appreciate your letting me know as early as you can if you will be able to help with this year s class. My is bmcvey@gvtc.com The classroom subjects will be taught by Lynn Simpson, Mike Stellato, Pete Macler, and myself. The sailing part of the class schedule is below so you can see the time requirements: Intro to Sailing Part 1 on Feb At 1:00pm on both days, meet your assigned students at the clubhouse, then take them to your boat for orientation, then sail until 3:45pm. Show them how to rig, depart, sail trim and steering, wind direction determination, 3 basic right-of-way rules, manoverboard demo, and how to return to your slip. Have students do as much as you feel comfortable with the essence is for them to gain an understanding of how to make a sailboat go and stop! Note: Once you have demonstrated the topics, have the students do as much of the helming and sail trimming as you feel comfortable with. There will be a list of items for you that we would like you to cover on each sail. Intro to Sailing Part 2 on Mar 4-5 At 12:45pm both days meet students at clubhouse. On Saturday we will have a destination sail depending on wind direction. The point will be to relax and enjoy being on the boat, along with discussions of right-of-way, sail trim, navigation, use of radio, keeping an eye out for weather, etc. On Sunday we will lay out a course which will require upwind, crosswind, and downwind sailing. The emphasis will be on sailing the boat well and sailing the course in as short a time as possible. Time the boat the first time around, then sail the same course again, and try to improve on the first time. This is the day to highlight which tacks take you to the marks in the shortest time, recognizing wind shifts, and looking for puffs of better wind to maneuver into. Continue emphasis on right-of-way rules. Thanks very much! Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Carolyn Popp Port captain: noun, Nautical. 1. an official in charge of the harbor activities of a seaport. OK, so we don t exactly have a seaport, but we do have lots of activities at LCYC! Approximately 60 people gathered at the club house for Second Things Second on the evening of January 1 to start the year off right with a meal that included the traditional black-eyed peas for good luck. Thanks to Lynn Simpson, Carolyn Harris, Joe & Lonna O Brien, Mary Lindsey and Sue Radley for preparing an excellent spread. The incoming Board of Governors hosted the well-attended Commodore s Breakfast on January 15. The next breakfast will be orga- nized by Robin Engel and her volunteers on Sunday, February 12. If you haven t been before, you re missing a delicious hot meal--one that will last you until dinner! The regulars know we ring the bell and begin serving at 9a. Get these dates on your calendar right away. By the time you re reading this, the Long Distance Race on January 28 will be over and Joe O Brien and team will have served a filling pasta and meatball dinner to the skippers and their crews. We currently are recruiting hosts for several upcoming events, primarily the meals associated with our series racing. These are casual dinners for the quarterly trophy presentations following races in February, May, August and October. Let us know if you d like to help in the kitchen and we ll be happy to provide details. It s really a lot of fun and a great way to interact with fellow club members. You can reach us by our phone or addresses listed in the LCYC directory, PortCaptain@ LCYC.net, or speak with us in person at the club. Hope to see you soon! 8 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle February is here and it s time for all the Storm Sailors to come out, dust off their rudders, and get some coaching in before the start of the racing season. We will be holding racing practice the first three Sundays in February from 1 to 4pm each day. We have two former collegiate sailors - Jim Kondziela and Joe Mayfield to help sharpen our racing techniques. These practices are open to all previous Storm Sailors and any youth sailors with enough sailing experience to start racing. Remember to dress for the weather. We are very excited about our upcoming Open Sail Day on March 5th. We will have a number of LCYC dinghies (Opti, Laser, Sunfish, more) ready to sail. The Open Sail Day is in open-house style, so come to the Youth Dock anytime between 12:30 4pm on Sunday, March 5th. We will have sailors available to help rig the boats, give some pointers, and keep everyone safe and having fun. You ll also have a chance to meet and sail with some of our youth Storm Sailors lots of friendships and fun. And remember to dress for the weather, bring your own life jacket, and wear it while on the dock and in the boat. Calling all LCYC Adults! We are always in need of volunteers to help teach our youth the finer points of sailing safely. If you are interested in helping us, please be watching for volunteer opportunities during the upcoming TSA Spring Fling Regatta in March. Dave Lilley is the chair for this great event on the Youth TSA Circuit held right here on our home waters. Racers who travel from other clubs always enjoy our venue, but it takes a large number of volunteers to make this event the great success it is each year. Please plan on helping out the weekend of March 11th 12th. And finally we want to hear from all the youth who are interested in sailing, whether you have already taken lessons or are interested in getting into a boat. We will be compiling a list of all families and youth who want to be contacted and are interested in youth sailing programs and events. If you would like to be a part of our list, please send an to youthsailing@lcyc.net. If you are an adult who would love to share some of your sailing expertise, we would also love to hear from you. Our mission this year is to fill the docks, water and grounds with the smiling faces of families who are sharing the joy of sailing together! See you on the water.
