1 December 2016 Volume 48 Number 12 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Sandra Lindsey This year we have had many successes at our club. We competed the new water well, septic system, and will soon start work on the breakwater. In July, the Leukemia Cup was extremely successful. This summer saw some dock parties that encouraged club members to become more engaged in our club. This year s Wurstfest was the best attended in several years. Our youth have traveled far and near this year bringing home awards to show their success. As I have traveled across Texas this year, I have often heard people talk about how great a place Lake Canyon Yacht Club is. I have been honored to spread the word about our club. It is a great place. Our members are welcoming and accepting to everyone who enters our gates. It doesn t matter if you are a doctor, lawyer, or school teacher. Everyone is so helpful. It doesn t matter if it is launching a boat or mixing up extra salads in the kitchen. LCYC is known across the state for being a great club. We still have several upcoming events in December. The club White Elephant party is on Dec.2nd at 6:00. The Annual Meeting will be on Dec. 3rd. We will be electing new Board of Governors members and a Vice Commodore at the meeting. There is a limited number of seats for this meeting and dinner. Please make your reservations early. The food is fabulous and fleet champions will be awarded that night. The Winter Series will begin on Dec. 10th. There is the Commodore s Grog on Dec. 10th. December 11th is the final Commodore s Breakfast followed by the beginning of the Winter Series for Boardboats. Our final event of the year is the New Year s Eve party on December. 31st. Try to make sure you attend these activities. I ll see you around the club. 3 Wurstfest Regatta Lynn Simpson Wow, wow, and wow! The word was out that LCYC s Wurstfest Regatta was the place to be! Both weekends saw registration numbers that had not been seen in over a decade! WFR I topped out with 108 entries & WFR II with 92 entries that gave a grand total of 200, what a fantastic number! This was a number that had not been matched for 29 years or, 1987 to be more precise. Certainly, the unseasonably warm weather was a big factor in drawing the racers to our club! Couple that with the fantastic reputation that LCYC is known for and one has a win, win, combination WFR I: 108 entries 10 fleets 5 courses! The best racing took place on Saturday, and even though the winds were light each of the fleets managed to get in 5 6 races. It was definitely a sight to behold looking at 108 boats on beautiful Canyon Lake, navigating their respective race courses! On Sunday morning rain and thunderstorms moved in. Some Trophies: 76 trophies were awarded over both weekends! For both of the WFR Saturday dinners, sailors, volunteers, families and friends were treated to a delicious dinner prepared by Food Chairs Georgina and Ed Taddia and a team of volunteers. Many hours were spent going over every detail of preparation and serving, it paid off - the compliments were many: on the delicious dinner and the efficiency of the serving process! For WFR I people had gone through the dinner line in 40 minutes. For WFR II the time improved to 260 in 30 minutes! The Raffle Raffle Chairs Donna Rice and Jenny Faulkner put together the most awesome pink themed raffle! Complete with beads, boas and fantastic raffle items! Ray Leubner On The Water Chair Ray did a phenomenal job organizing/recruiting and working to ensure that every last little detail was covered! and Harry coordinated the ramp traffic. No easy task this year with all of the extra boats/ trailers/dollies. Pat Ketchum Pat lined up a fantastic band for both weekends; Jazz Blues and Diamonds! Thank You committee chairs, for all of the time that you spent working on all of the details perfecting this magnificent regatta! The grounds crew Donny and Ray did an excellent job over both weekends. They certainly keep our club shipshape! Thank you Donny and Ray. Volunteers Volunteers! LCYC s volunteers came out in force to support the Wurstfest Regatta s. Here are some volunteer statistics: Total for WFR I & II = 232 (WFR I - 130, WFR II 102) 69 volunteers that worked both weekends. Number that worked more than 1 shift WFR I = 84 WFR II = 79 fleets were lucky enough to get in a race or two, while other fleets sadly had their races abandoned due to the very light wind conditions and the threat of lightning in the area. WFR II: 92 entries 15 fleets 4 courses! The multihulls really made a showing with an impressive 41 entries! One of the many highlights: 2 foiling catamarans. I was lucky enough to get out on the spectator boat and watch the foiling cats. in action, very impressive! The race committees did a great job getting in 4 6 races for each of the courses. Sunday s races were abandoned at 9:00 am due to light and variable wind conditions. An interesting detail: with 92 boats racing there were zero protests! Kathy Leubner Publicity The graphics, the WFR T shirts, the posters, getting the word out, the raffle brochure, the list goes on! Carolyn Popp Volunteer Coordinator Carolyn maintained the list volunteers, made name tags for all, and knew who needed to be where and when! Elizabeth Bentzen Registration Elizabeth has become the expert on everything registration! She takes care of it all! Jean Junker and Harry Sutherland Ramp/ Launch/Safety Over both weekends Jean To each and every one of the Wurstfest Regatta volunteers Thank You for all that you did, in making this Regatta a resounding success! Thank you to The Wurstfest Regatta sponsors: UK Sails, Harris Rebar, Gold Financial, Brookshire Brothers, Community Pet Health Center, MDI, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel, Kawasaki of Universal City, Adelita s, Subway, Roeschmann Design, APS, Chicken Express, Kiolbassa. 4 Nominations Committee Report James H. Kizziar Jr., Chairman The LCYC Nominations Committee considered many qualified members for 2017 Board of Governors and Vice-Commodore positions. In November, the Committee proposed the following members to the Board of Governors. The nominations were unanimously approved by the Board of Governors and are recommended to the membership for election at the December 3, 2016, Annual Meeting Board of Governors Elizabeth Bentzen Elizabeth spent many summers at LCYC with her grandparents, sailing, serving on race committee and volunteering in the LCYC kitchen. After graduating with her PhD in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, she worked as manager of production for a Pharmaceutical company in Louisville, KY. She returned to Texas in 2008 and once again became involved with LCYC, including racing on her grandfather s J80 and her own Flying Scott. After teaching and serving as a department chair at Canyon Lake High School, she began teaching classes on biological and chemical agents as a contactor to the military. Currently, Elizabeth teaches at a local charter school that services a girl s residential treatment center and serves as a mentor teacher and a curriculum implementation specialist for the school district. Elizabeth spends her spare time sailing, working and volunteering at LCYC. She has served as the Club s Webmaster for the past 2 years. Elizabeth has been responsible for Wurstfest registration for the past 5 years, has spent many hours helping in the LCYC kitchen with meal preparation and has participated in keelboat, board boat, SEW MAD and other Club racing programs. Elizabeth has also volunteered on race committee during Wurstfest, TSA regattas, monthly club racing and J22/24 Regattas Bill Clark Bill was born in the Bronx and raised in Pleasantville, New York, learning how to sail on Long Island Sound. He grew up sailing and learning with his father on the family Cal 25. Bill also had a Sunfish, which he sailed as often as possible. Bill s family moved to San Antonio in 1978 and he purchased a Hobie Cat to sail on Canyon Lake. Bill and his wife, Stephanie, joined LCYC to be around fellow sailors at the best marina on Canyon Lake. Bill has participated in Spring and Fall Work Days and has volunteered with the adaptive sailing program for disabled veterans. Bill is also an active participant in the Club racing program. His volunteering and participation have been a pathway to meeting new friends and becoming a better sailor. Bill owns and operates CBS Systems, Inc., a water treatment company located in Bulverde. Anu Day Anu spent her career as a physical therapist for 30 years. Recently retired, she lives at Canyon Lake. Anu has traveled extensively throughout the world. A Club member since 2005, Anu has volunteered in many capacities. Most recently, she served a Co-Port Captain in 2016, where she was responsible for organizing social events, soliciting volunteers, purchasing and attending Board meetings. Volunteering is a family affair. Anu s daughter, Meera, grew up as an active participant in the Youth Sailing Program and still volunteers with the Program. Anu s husband, Fred, has served a Director and volunteered on the water and in the LCYC kitchen. Anu considers LCYC to be her family sailing club and very special in her life Chris Powers Chris grew up around Boston, sailing with his family on Buzzard s Bay and crewing in a highly competitive Etchells fleet in Marblehead. He was on the Princeton Sailing team during college; after graduating, Chris and several friends sailed the Caribbean before going ashore to begin their careers. Chris has worked in corporate IT at Tenneco, an automotive company, for 14 years. Chris took time off from work in Michigan to race on Lake Erie and in several Bermuda and Marblehead- Halifax ocean races. He and his wife, Jessica, moved to San Antonio in To feel more at home in his new Texas surroundings, Chris sought out a local yacht Club and joined LCYC. Phil has served as the President of Commercial Investment Division of both SABOR and TAR, the Real Estate Council and the Responsible Growth Alliance. Additionally, he has served in a Mentor Program for UTSA students. Phil grew up coming to Canyon Lake for recreational and boating activities. He s come to realize the beauty of sail in more recent years and he s hooked on the sport. Phil and his wife, Barbara, have taken many ASA sailing courses. Phil has been an active participant in LCYC sailing and social activities. He has volunteered with Wurstfest Regattas. Phil served on the Board of Governors in He has also been instrumental in the development and success of the Club s Leukemia Cup regattas. During its November meeting, the Board of Governors extended its appreciation to the members of the Nominations Committee (Sandra Lindsey, Steve Edlund, Pete Prados, Stacy Wilson and Jim Kizziar) and to Vice- Commodore Lynn Simpson for their efforts in recruiting and nominating future leaders of our Club. Club Officer Ballots Terry Tomko This year members have the opportunity to vote and choose the Board of Governors. The nominating committee has presented five members to serve, plus an At Large Nomination has been made by members for Joseph O'Brien. Please Mail your Ballot for Club Officers by November 26th (deadline to receive at club office is December 1st). Joe has been a member of LCYC since He is a 21 year veteran of the Air Force and worked for 35 years as a law enforcement officer. While he is not a candidate proposed by this year s Nominating Committee, we feel that his contributions to LCYC as well as his desire to serve on the Board should be rewarded. Joe is an active member of the club, having served as Vice-Chair of Docks and Grounds for the past two years. He has also assisted with dozens of club events. Please mail your ballot by the deadline and vote for 5 Board Members of your choice, and we hope you consider Joe O'Brien as one of your choices. 6 Youth Sailing Sandra Lindsey We are so excited to announce that Chris and Debora Fogle are taking over the reins of youth sailing. They are busy building their team and are expecting youth sailing to start in February. We are in the process of completing an inventory of the all the youth boats and a maintence plan for them. As you are planning your volunteer time for next year keep youth sailing in mind. C. Fogle raced in the Texas Youth Circuit in the White Fleet. Caleb finished in 3rd place. T. Davila also completed in a Opti at the Texas Youth Circuit. D. McMullen, D. Cox, and C. Grumbles also completed in the Radial class of the Texas Youth Circuit. There were also students from our sailing classes that joined in on sailing with our boardboat races this year. We can t wait to see how they progress in their sailing abilities. The Board of Governors and I would like to thank Sylvia Mathis for guiding the Youth Sailors for the past few years. We wish her well as she works on her sailing dreams Port Co-Captains Anu Day & Margaret McGill CAN IT BE that we are writing a report for DECEMBER already? As they say, time flies when you re having fun! But as we age, it seems that time flies whether we re having fun or not On 10/22 we had a chili dinner, with chili cooked by Marty Chrisman. Approximately 65 people shared food and a very pleasant evening. Thanks to volunteers Anu Day, Joe O Brien, Carolyn Harris, Sue Radley, and Ed and Georgina Taddia. On 10/23 Susie Boedeker and Sue Radley prepared and served a chicken and spaghetti dinner for the board boat racers. Please note upcoming events for December: the Merrie Olde Christmas Party on December 2 is hosted Joe O Brien and Carolyn Harris. Bring a dish to share and a $15 wrapped gift if you want to participate in the gift exchange. Don t stay out too late Friday, though, because the LCYC Annual Meeting is the very next night, Saturday December 3 at the River Crossing Country Club. On December 10, in addition to the Board meeting and keelboat racing, Sandra Lindsey hosts the Commodore s Grog. Sunday December 11 will be the final 2016 Commodore s Breakfast, hosted by the outgoing Board of Governors. Don t miss these events! Details will be in weekly blast s and on the web. As this goes to press, there still is no 2017 LCYC Port Captain. This means that some of your favorite events at the club may not happen. Kathy Leubner has volunteered to coordinate the Commodore s Breakfasts, reducing the burden of a Port Captain. But we need someone to be in charge over all to make sure all events are covered with sufficient volunteers, keep the kitchen stocked, and provide updates for the membership in the Ditty Bag and weekly blasts. There s always LOTS of help people are incredibly generous to help prepare, serve, and clean for meals. It s the planning, recruiting and delegating by the Port Captain that we need. Great benefits include an opportunity to influence LCYC experiences, a voice at the Board of Governors table (if not a vote), lots of camaraderie, and (the coup de grace) a designated parking spot. Please contact Margaret McGill, Anu Day, or Lynn Simpson if you might be interested in learning more about the job. See you on the water or at the club, Margaret McGill & Anu Day LCYC December 2016 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club
