1 September 2018 Volume 50 Number 9 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Phil Crane Welcome to September. The seasons, if not the weather, are about to change and LCYC is rocking along. The kids will be in school but given the demographics of our club that our survey earlier this year revealed, that doesn t impact too many of our members. Last month the BOG discussed that survey and have decided to form a task force to look at the results and use them to begin to think strategically about our club and its future. Chris Fogle will lead this group and report to the BOG its thoughts and suggestions. Another action from the Board that s important is a modification of our rules regarding Clubhouse rental. It allows the BOG to consider requests from members to rent the Clubhouse, including weekends, when there is no conflict with club events. Fees will remain the same along with the proviso that rental is for the facility but does not include consumable such at plates, napkins, etc. The other clarification is that rental involves the nonexclusive use of the facilities, including the pool area. All rental requests are made through the Club Administrator, Carolyn Cole. As I indicated we re rocking along with many events completed and planned. Look for a recap of the SEW-MAD Regatta from the last weekend in August. Thanks to Lynn Simpson for her ongoing leadership in this event. For September and beyond I hope you are (or have) participated in our Labor Day race and picnic. Also, the Fall Series of racing begins this month. There is a New Member Orientation on the 22nd and a Steak Dinner Party that evening for old and new members! An Adaptive Sailing event will be held on the 29th. Bill McVey continues to lead this much appreciated day on the water. Your club leadership is also busy at this time of year. The Budget Committee led by Laurie McGill is working on the 2019 budget. Mike Samulin, Renee Kizziar, Marvin Arnold, Craig Uberroth, Bob Middleton, Lynn Simpson and Elizabeth Bentzen will consider the budgets from the various cost center chairs and present a comprehensive budget for next year. The Nominations Committee led by Ray Leubner is selecting nominees for next year s board as well as Vice Commodore. And that little regatta called Wustfest is also being planned by Mike Samulin it s not too early to call Mike and volunteer to help. Finally, it seems among my duties this year is to remind you that we do have rules that we are ALL expected to follow. As I indicated in my July report it includes that guests must be accompanied by a member unless authorization is from the Club Administrator. And your adult children, age 22 and above, are guests, not members of the club and must be accompanied as well. Additionally, and this comes under the common-sense category, if you are going to bring a large number of guests, it would make sense to let the Club Administrator know so that arrangements can be made, and members can be notified. Also, in July I did refer to the rule that said pet must be on leashes. Again, under the common-sense and decency category, it should go without saying that you clean up after them. There have been repeated offenses on both the Youth Dock and Sunfish Dock. It s really unfortunate that I even have to bring this up. This is your club but it also every member s club. Be thoughtful and follow the rules that allow all of us to enjoy the facility. See you around the club. 2 WURSTFEST REGATTA 2018 Mike Samulin Fall is approaching and that means it will soon be time for our annual Wurstfest Regatta. This year is very special it is our 50th Wurstfest Regatta. As usual, we will have sailors from all over the area visiting us for two great weekends of racing and fun. We have music lined up for both Saturday evenings, and as usual we will have our Wurstfest dinners with all of the trimmings. As always, it takes many volunteers to make this event successful, and we want to make sure our 50th is the best ever. So, if you can help out and volunteer in any way, it will be appreciated. No experience is required, and I guarantee that you will enjoy the fun and comradery. A list of the committee chairs is listed, so please contact them if you can help out. And if your business would like to be a sponsor just let us know. We look forward to seeing everyone there Committee Chairs (a special THANK YOU to all of them!) 3 Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Vivian Miller WHEW, what a hot August we had! Did you know the Dog Days of Summer are traditionally the 40 days beginning July 3rd (soon after the Summer Solstice) and ending August 11th, the period which coincides with the dawn rising of Sirius the Dog Star? This tidbit is according to The Old Farmer s Almanac so, technically speaking, those dog days are behind us. However, in this part of the country it s very likely there is still more heat on the way. Consequently we have some pretty cool events planned for September, pun intended. First a word of appreciation for the volunteers who helped with our summer series award dinners last month--jan and Allen Broyles, Jean Junker and Carolyn Popp. This crew prepared homemade chicken jambalaya for both the keelboaters and boardboaters on 11/12 August which was, by the way, right after Jan was honored for completing marathons in all 50 states! We celebrated both sailing and running accomplishments over that weekend. Also on the 12th, Laurie and Margaret McGill together with their family members hosted a filling Commodore s Breakfast of Mexican casserole, sausage, fresh fruit salad, biscuits and sweet rolls. Dee-lish! On Labor Day, Monday 03 September at 1:00 pm, Donna and Travis Mitchell will prepare a big smorgasbord of mixed greens, chicken, beef and ham, veggies, cheese, croutons, bacon bits and nuts so you can create the cool salad of your choice (and keep them out of a hot kitchen). There will be enough protein and other toppings to make a satisfying meal after the morning s long distance pursuit race. Even if you don t sail, come celebrate the holiday with your LCYC friends. Our next Commodore s Breakfast will be held on Sunday, 09 September and will be hosted by Mindy and Don Rogers and Margaret McGill. Look for the menu in Wednesday s e-blast. The final September event will be our annual cook-your-own-steak dinner on Saturday, the 22nd at 5:30p. Of course if you d rather have a Portabella mushroom or chicken or salmon, that s OK as club members will be supplying and grilling their own main course. Volunteers Julie and Richard Magoon and Jean Junker will coordinate and organize the sides and desserts. If you have not yet donated any time in the galley, please know that we need hosts for the fall series award dinners on 13/14 October, and for the fall workday (breakfast and lunch) on Saturday, 20 October. Really, it s a lot of fun (and rewarding) to cook for a crowd and your port captains are ready to provide guidance, assistance and reimbursement. Just let us know if you re willing to help by ing portcaptain@lcyc.net See you in the galley or on the water, and stay cool! 3 September 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

4 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle The fall sailing season is just around the corner, and everyone is back in school wishing their vacation had been longer and missing their summer days on the water. At the end of July, we added two new sailors to the Canyon Lake sailing scene member Ryan Mitchell and his buddy Konner completed an Introductory Sailing Course with some quality instruction in the Opti, Bic, and Pico. Congratulations guys well done. Since then, we ve seen Ryan sailing in one of our Wednesday night race days and in the club series race! On the TSA Youth Circuit, our sailors Caleb Fogle and Dylan Tomko competed in the Laser 4.7 and Opti Green fleets at the Rockin Rockport Regatta on August Conditions on Saturday were perfect steady knots of wind and small sea state. Sunday brought knots of wind Youth Sailing Dates September 8-9 Rock the Rock Regatta, Corinthian Sailing Club, Dallas, TX September Pirates of the Corinthian Regatta, Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club October 6-7 October Jr ol' Man of the Sea Regatta, Fort Worth Boat Club Changes in L'Attitude Regatta, Corpus Christi Yacht Club November TSA End of Year Regatta, Rush Creek Yacht Club, Rockwall, TX and 1-2-foot seas. Both racers did very well. Dylan secured the best Green Fleet record with bullets (1st place finishes) in 5 of the 10 races. Caleb earned a solid 2nd Place award for his performance in the Laser 4.7 his best regatta of the year. Again -well done! The Summer Series also wrapped up in August with a very windy and rainy day for the Board Boat Racers. Caleb Fogle finished 2nd on the day in the Portsmouth fleet. For the overall summer series, Zach Zinn and J.D. Kemter walked away with an overall 3rd place finish in the Portsmouth fleet sailing the C420. Keep an eye out for our Open Sail Days in the fall and join us on the dock and try out a dinghy. See you on the water! 5 Women's Sailing Program Lynn Simpson The July 26 & 27, weekday Women s Learn to Sail Class was extremely popular this year, within two days of registration opening up 10 available spots had been filled! Wow, this was going to be an extra special class and, special it was! A wonderful group of women at the ready to be introduced to the wonderful sport of sailing! The two day class was packed with lots of learning and sailing. By the end of the two days we had covered; parts of a boat, parts of sail, wind awareness, how a sail works, tacking, jibing, departing, returning, and more! Our two afternoons of on the water instruction saw very different conditions; on day one the winds were very light and very shifty. I heard comments of I hope we have more wind tomorrow well, on day two, the winds had increased to 16 plus with gusts around 18 mph. To keep the boats manageable with the new students on board, we sailed with mainsails only. The afternoon sail on day two was very lively! Kudo s to each of the students, who each took a turn on the tiller. It never fails to amaze at how quickly, the two days of instruction flies by. The great news with this year s class is that 6 of the students have signed up to be crew for The SEW-MAD Regatta. I call that fantastic! I want to say Thank You to; Debbie Fogle, Terry Beasley, Donna Rice, and Janet Lockhart, for volunteering their time, talent, and enthusiasm, in making this a wonderful and successful class. Bill McVey gets an honorable mention as he graciously loans his boat Good Grief to the program each year, Thank you, Bill. See you on the water! mages courtesy Lynn Simpson 5 September 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

6 Summer Series Racing Chris Powers The final weekend of the Summer Series brought a challenging mix of unstable weather. On Saturday, we were expecting a weak southerly, but after a 40-minute postponement, it finally stabilized enough from the North to start a race. This race went well for a while, only to have the wind die again at the end. The direction stayed stable enough for it to be a valid race, albeit with some patience from the finishers. Lynn Simpson won the J/22 race in Bling, and Gustavo Medellin won PHRF-Spin in Canyon Wind. Steve Wilson and Joe Monosmith were the only finishers in their respective fleets. We were unable to start a second race due to lack of wind. On Sunday, 16 boardboats arrived to race, but two turned back before the first start, with heavy clouds approaching over the dam, and three more turned in before finishing the first race, as those clouds brought heavy wind and heavier rain. There were times when visibility was less than 50 yards and the sailing was very challenging for minutes. Between 1:00 and 1:25 PM, the instruments read sustained winds of mph with gusts of 27. After that, it settled down to a nice 9-14 with occasional gusts around 20. The wind actually went light toward the end of the second race, and the soaked sailors and and race committee headed for home to dry out gear. Keith Zars and Fred Soward split the wins in the Scots, as did Allan Borden and Harold Simmons in the Sunfish. Craig Berleme won both Portsmouth races. Thanks to Rick Mella and his RC team for managing the fleet in difficult circumstances. The Laser sailors in Portstmouth advised me that they'd like to get enough Lasers registered for Fall Series to race as a fleet of their own. We're happy to support that if they all register simply as Lasers instead of looking for Portsmouth adjustments by rig type, and as long as at least three register before the first race day. Looking forward, please note the Labor Day Distance Race, and please also note that the Fall Series only has two race days, to make room for Wurstfest. Keelboats will have three races per series race day, and boardboats will have four. Boardboats will start at noon to have enough time for four races.
