1 January 2018 Volume 50 Number 1 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Phil Crane Happy New Year and welcome to I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and is ready to tackle the New Year. I also hope that everyone leaves some time to come out to LCYC and enjoy our club and set sail on beautiful Canyon Lake was an eventful year featuring LCYC s 50th Anniversary and (now) Rear Commodore Lynn Simpson and her team did an outstanding job throwing a celebration of that landmark event. That, of course, won t be repeated this year but we will feature our other signature regattas including the TSA, Leukemia Cup and the 50th Annual Wurstfest Regatta which is sure to be another celebration headed by Vice Commodore Mike Samulin. This is in addition to our normal schedule of series racing, board meetings, commodore breakfasts, sail training and social events! The 2018 calendar is now on the website. Please take a look and if you see anything missing let me know! In the December board meeting there was lively discussion about the club and its future including participation in our racing and youth programs. As you would suspect there are no perfect answers and what we really need is input from ALL our members. With that in mind we are going to do two things that we hope will give everyone the opportunity for input and give the board guidance for making sure our club is serving the membership s needs. First, we are going to do a survey which will hopefully be sent to everyone next month. After that we will use the results to help guide a planning meeting that will set a course for the club as we embark on our next fifty years. Please be looking for the survey in the near future and give us your input so we can use the information for successful and meaningful planning. A good organization is always evolving, and our club is no different. Whether it s our marina which is scheduled to have a major renovation to the breakwater toward the end of the year or our sailing programs with the new (sometimes) regular beer can races, we have to adjust to our memberships needs and wants. But at the end of the day our club should be about two things sailing and having fun; let s always keep that in mind. Thanks to all of you for your membership and participation. I look forward to seeing everyone around the club! Welcome New Members Joseph and Damaris Huch...San Antonio, TX Charles and Ann Ahrens... 2 Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Vivian Miller A look back: As you might expect, December was a busy month for LCYC social activities. Sixty plus members and guests attended the Merry Ole Christmas Party on the 1st. Joe & Lonna O Brien with Carolyn Harris and many other helpers took care of feeding the crowd while Ron Wilson managed the raucous process of gift exchanging (and stealing). There was lots of stealing! We gathered again to celebrate Lynn s last official duty as host of our annual Commodore s Grog on Saturday the 9th. The Lasagne Noel was spectacular (thanks Ed & Georgina Taddia) and Lynn s homemade Merry Cherry Cheesecakes were so popular that those who delayed getting dessert simply missed out. After the meal, Lynn planned entertainment in the form of a trivia competition and then was highly surprised at the last unplanned question which led to her induction into an elite group, the Jolly Rogers Pluckers. Donna Rice presented Lynn with her very own ukulele decorated with lots of appropriate bling and then the Jolly Rogers performed a few songs to top off the evening. Arrgggghhh! The outgoing Board of Govenors prepared a scrumptious Commodore s Breakfast on the The Blizzard of December 8th. Photo by Jim LeTexier following morning featuring sausage & egg casseroles, cheese grits, and blueberry muffins. Janet Lockhart, Jack Carter, Steve Edlund, and Barbara & Phil Crane all pitched in to make it happen. A look forward: Now that 2017 is behind us, we can start the new year off right with our traditional First Things First sail followed by a good luck Second Things Second dinner in the clubhouse at 5:00 pm. Come join us for ham, black-eye peas, mac & cheese, spinach salad and cornbread. What s the luck factor, you ask? It s pork for progress, peas for pennies, greens for dollars and cornbread for gold. We ll be set for a fantastic year ahead, full of memorable events. Speaking of events, the incoming Board of Governors will host the Commodore s Breakfast from 9 to 10:30 am on Sunday, January 14. Come share a hot, morning meal while you meet the new board, catch up with sailing friends and find out what s been going on over the holidays. See you on the water or at the club! 3 Learn To Sail Program Introduction to Sailing- Part 1 Feb Goal - Provide basic understanding of sailing and specific water safety practices related to sailing. We will use keelboats skippered and crewed by experienced club members. To the extent possible we will provide one boat for each two students for the sailing sessions. After demonstrating each new topic, students will be given the opportunity to do the helming and sail trimming to learn hands on. Subjects will include; Types of sailboats, Sailing terminology, What makes a sailboat go, Relationship to wind, Sail trim, Controlling a sailboat, Knot tying, Basic right of way rules. Bill McVey rules, and using Correct sail trim to sail the boat efficiently (as quickly and as safely) as possible. Saturday afternoon will be a 3 hour sail to Canyon Lake Marina, or island, or dam, depending on weather. The intent on Saturday is for a leisurely sail, to use the boat to take a trip. Sunday afternoon, we will lay out an hourlong triangle and have the students sail the track as quickly as possible, two times around. The intent Sunday is to sail the boats as well as possible, with primary emphasis on efficient upwind, best boat speed, and compass headings to cover the course in minimum time. We encourage everyone to treat these two weekends as a single course, although we will accept entrants for either one (must have prior sailing experience to sign up only for the second one). The fees are $30 for both weekends, or $15 for either weekend separately. Only one fee is required for two family members if they are willing to share the course books. Register on line at lcyc.net. Registration should be operational by mid-january. Please contact Bill McVey at bmcvey@gvtc.com with any questions. Class Schedule for both weekends: Saturday and Sunday 9am-noon classroom; 12-1pm -lunch (bring your own); 1pm-4 pm - on the water sailing. Introduction to Sailing- Part 2 March 3-4 Goal - to build on the previous week s basic training by providing additional classroom topics and on-the-water sailing activities. Subjects will include; Launching from a trailer, Rigging and derigging the boat, Departing and returning to a dock or mooring, Planning a short trip, Understanding weather considerations, Making a sail plan, Safety Considerations including emergency procedures, Knowledge of the Texas boating digest, Continued emphasis on right of way 3 January 2018 The Blizzard of December 8th. 4 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle Happy New Year! First things first we want to encourage you to make a New Year s Resolution to sail more this year. Easy enough? As this new year unfolds, we are once again busy getting ready for the TSA Youth Circuit to include our Spring Fling Regatta in March. This annual event is LCYC s turn to host over 100 youth sailors from around Texas. This year s regatta is March at the tail-end of Spring Break. We need your help. We are still in need of volunteers to man the registration process, help competitors launch and retrieve their boats, and prepare meals. If you can donate a few hours to help us over that weekend, don t be shy - please contact us at youthsailing@ lcyc.net so that we ll know you re interested. This year we hope with your help we can maintain interest in bringing unique sailing opportunities to our members youth and families. But we need your help. At risk of cancellation are our annual introduction to sailing lessons in May, monthly Open Sail Days, and intermediate sailing clinics. If you can help, please consider volunteering your time and talents as an ambassador of our sport serving the youth of our club and surrounding communities. February March April 7-8 April May June 2-3 June July 6-8 August In the meantime, please stay tuned to the weekly blast and the Ditty Bag. Our current plan includes monthly Open Sail Days, racing clinics, experience on multi-hulls and keel boats, and our annual Learn-to-Sail clinics. See you on the water! Docks and Grounds Craig Uberroth and Travis Mitchell Docks and Grounds again has been very busy with daily operations to maintain the docks, buildings and grounds. On the docks, Marine Development Incorporated (MDI) was aboard for several days to inspect and repair the docks as needed. Safety is a priority at LCYC and with that said, deteriorated Life-rings have been replaced on each dock. Ensure your shore power cables are properly secured so they do not touch the water and if you need assistance, contact maintenance. Also, please ensure your boat lines are properly stowed/coiled and don t become a trip hazard. If you have been at the Clubhouse lately, you will notice the shrubs next to the pool had to be removed to make way for repairs. Currently, the deck area adjacent to the pool is being repaired and will be completed as soon as possible dependent on weather. The pool is still operational. Water to the docks was taken out of service due to pool repairs however, it has been restored. Ground maintenance; the palm tree next to the flagpole has been removed along with other shrubs surrounding the Clubhouse. These were removed due to the impact they had on the Clubhouse, decks, HVAC system and property. Thanks to the maintenance crew for all the great work they did over this past year! 4 January 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club
