1 September 2016 Volume 48 Number 9 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Sandra Lindsey This time of year get incredibly busy, new school year, cross country practice, football and volleyball practice, band practice, not to mention college football is starting. Before it spirals out of control stop and think about how you can help out our club. Are you interested in helping out the governance of our club, holding an office, chairing a standing committee? If you are let Jim Kizziar and Lynn Simpson know. If you don t feel up to chairing a committee, let me know I will be happy to share your name. It takes a huge amount of volunteer time to keep this club moving in the right direction. If it is only five minutes an hour or considerable more your help is always needed and welcome. September starts with Labor Day activities and a cookout. Then we have keelboat and board boat races with the Commodore s breakfast on the second full weekend of the month. We close out the month with a New Members Orientation followed by a Shrimp Boil at 6pm on Sept. 24th. Fred and I had the pleasure of serving on the race committee for the July Keelboat and Boardboat races. On Sunday we had a delightful young sailor named Tyler on the RC boat. He was as polite as a young sailor as you could have ever wished for and was eager to learn and help. Helping on the RC boat on Sunday was Terry Beasley, on the Zodaic was Ruben Davila and Teagen Gunderman. Gary Bourgeois with Guy and Beth manned the chase boat. All three boats helped a boat make it back to shore safely. Keep sailing. Sandra Docks and Grounds Dave Sanford Welcome NewMembers Please be careful while walking on the docks especially with a cart. Pulling a cart instead of pushing is safer because you can better see any obtructions. A reminder that glass containers are not allowed in the pool area. Also, please dispose of diapers in the dumpster, not the trash, as they can get quite odiferous. Thanks to everyone who flattens cardboard before disposal: it saves a lot of dumpster space and disposal fees. You may have seen Donny and Ray from the Grounds Crew installing new decking on the pipe dock. Looking good! Roger & Kenda Crider... San Antonio, TX Clint Penniman & Michelle Bammel... 2 Women's Sailing Program Lynn Simpson Smooth, smooth, sailing is exactly what comes to mind when I think back to the July Learn to Sail Class. The weather was great. Well, except for the heat. This had temperatures topping out at 100 degrees or higher. The winds over the two days were idyllic for beginners; gentle breezes ranging from 6-9 mph with an occasional mph gust. Yes, smooth sailing indeed! From early on, there had been a lot of interest in this class so it was no surprise, that the available spots were filled by mid-july. Four of the students were out-of-towners: Janet and Sarah, mother and daughter who hail from Simsbury Connecticut, Paolo from Houston, Kristian from Corpus Christi, and the locals: Lonna, Linda, Georgina, and Sarita. Day 1 began with introductions and an overview of the class. There was a lot to learn about sailing: boat parts, parts of the sail, wind awareness, what makes a sail boat go, points of sail, rigging-derigging, docking, departing, tacking, jibing, and safety. It was a busy morning! The classroom portion behind us, it was time to rig the boats and go sailing. It was a wonderful afternoon of sailing and the many pieces of the sailing puzzle were coming together! There was plenty of tiller time for all, and no one shied away from taking the helm. We survived the heat and learned a lot, time to call it a day! Day 2 started with a complete review of the topics from the previous day, which included a test on boat and sail parts. Next up, tacking and jibing: a step by step break down of the crew s responsibilities through each of the maneuvers. We covered the basic rules of the road, getting there and back, and finished up with a complete review! It was time to go sailing. For that afternoon s sail the students were encouraged to take a hands-on approach with the rigging process. I observed exactly that, the crews on each of the boats were really engaged in the tasks at hand. Lots of team work and communication going on, I love it! It was another afternoon of some fantastic sailing. Confidence was starting to build there was a feeling of accomplishment, smiles on many faces as we made our way back to the marina. The boats were de-rigged, it was then time to head up to the club house for a quick chalk talk & wrap up of the weekends sailing lessons! Certificates were handed out, words of thanks and praises were shared with the volunteers who had helped out: Donna Rice, Robin Engel and Terry Beasley. I extend my thanks to each of you for volunteering your time, talent, and boats, in making this class such a huge success. Bill McVey also receives a big Thank You. Bill graciously loaned his J22, Good Grief to the program. Well, that wraps up the sailing lessons for the Women s Sailing Program for this year. Next on the agenda is the women s regatta SEW-MAD. I am happy to report that at least eight of the women who have participated in the classes have signed up for SEW-MAD! I couldn t be happier! 3 WURSTFEST REGATTA 2016 Lynn Simpson The summer heat will soon be a thing of the past, and as we begin to think of cooler and shorter days, Wurstfest comes to mind! This will be the 48th year of LCYC hosting this premier event, which draws competitors from across Texas, as well as Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Florida. The two weekend Regatta: Wurstfest I for centerboard and board boats and Wurstfest II for keelboats overlaps with Wurstfest festivities in New Braunfels. The Wurstfest dates are: WF I November 4 6, 2016 WF II November 11 13, 2016 The 2016 WF team is in place: Galley: Ed & Georgina Taddia On the Water: Ray Leubner WF Raffle: Jenny Faulkner & Donna Rice Registration: Elizabeth Bentzen Publicity: Kathy Leubner WF I Launch/Ramp: Jean Junker WF II Launch/Ramp: Harry Sutherland Entertainment: Pat Ketchum Volunteer Coordinator: Carolyn Popp Behind the scenes the WF team has been busy with the organizing and planning that make Wurstfest such a stand out and stellar event! Volunteers: There are volunteer opportunities galore: On the water, Galley, Raffle, Launch/Ramp, & Registration. The team leaders will be making a call to the LCYC membership to fill the many volunteer positions. Volunteering is a great way to meet fellow LCYC members. You also get to learn a little of how LCYC operates, of how the event runs, meet some really accomplished sailors, and enjoy some really great food and entertainment. Please consider volunteering Sponsors: Wurstfest 2016 welcomes 4 new sponsors: Harris Rebar Community Pet Health Center Brookshire Brothers UK Sails I am really excited and so very pleased to have the new sponsors on board! Well, that about wraps it up for me for this month. I will have more to say next month. Stay tuned! Questions regarding Wurstfest, volunteering for the event, can be directed to me at: WurstfestChairman@lcyc.net Zum Wohl! ADAPTIVE SAILING Bill McVey Calling all volunteers! On October 1st, we are hosting our final outing for this year to invite special-needs folks, along with their families and aides, to our club to provide them the opportunity to experience sailing. LCYC began this program in 2006 and for the past ten years both our guests and volunteers have thoroughly enjoyed it many guests have attended multiple times! The current programs we work with are The Door-in-the-Wall organization founded by Barbara Blair in Bandera, and Operation Comfort, a group founded by Janis Roznowski that organizes activities for Wounded Warriors. Our guests for this outing will be coming via the Door-in-the-Wall Texas organization. They were also scheduled for our previous outing in June but you may remember that we had had a lot of rain and had only a temporary ramp to the floating dock which was too narrow and unstable for those with walking disabilities so we had to cancel it. The schedule is: 11:00AM - Orientation 11:30 - Lunch (LCYC provides sandwhichs, chips, cookies and drinks to guests and volunteers 12:00 - Assign guests to boats 12:15 - Go to boats and sail 2:45 - Return to docks 3:00 - End of event We would like to have keelboats and skippers and also additional experienced sailors (in case the skipper decides to go for a swim!) so we can accommodate up to 25 guests. We also need two volunteers to set out the lunch and clean up afterwards. The outing will be about 4 weeks after this is published in our Ditty Bag, so it s not too early to be signing up to help if you are interested! Thanks very much, Bill 3 September 2016 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club
4 A Sailor's Fantasy Comes True The last 10 months has been a whirlwind tour for local sailor John Tomko, member of the Houston Yacht Club and Canyon Lake resident along with his crew Jonathan Atwood of Rockport, and backup sailor Ian Billings. The Team is sponsored by the Lupe Tortilla Restaurant chain along with national sponsor Bacardi Rum. "Team Lupe Tortilla" has been globe trotting with their Flying Phantom Foiling Catamaran starting in November at the Americas Cup base in Bermuda with their last stop in July on Lake Garda in northern Italy. John was fortunate to train with Americas Cup contending Team Artemis in Bermuda. Team Oracle of the USA loaned him a mast due to shipping problems with their mast from France. Several European Teams were eliminated from the regatta since their boats were shipped to New York instead of Bermuda, but that's another story. April they raced in a regatta in Cannes, France. with 14 other Flying Phantoms. The Flying Phantom is a lightweight 18 foot cat with foils and the team has reached speeds of up to 30 knots in under 20 knots winds. " Team Lupe Tortilla" won the 40 mile long distance race on Lake Geneva out of 10 Phantoms. Lupe Tortilla Restaurants are located in Houston, Austin and San Antonio, with Judson Holt as CEO who has a great passion for sailing. The team was featured in the July issue of Sail magazine, and will have another article in the September or October issue featuring their win on the long distance race on Lake Geneva in Switzerland in June. The last series they sailed at foiling week on Lake Garda in Italy in July. There were almost 100 foiling boats at Lake Garda with boats as long as 32 feet. John said this was a dream come true for a young guy that first started sailing Hobie Cats off of Jacobs Creek beach. Next stop Newport, Rhode Island with yours truly hauling one of "Team Lupe Tortilla's" boats along with 2 Stunt 9 Flying Cats, owned by club member Charlie Mayer. Bill Cochran and I will be meeting the team there for a 4 day US Foiling Weekend starting on September 8th. Check out Facebook : Phantom International. by Terry Tomko Port Co-Captains Anu Day & Margaret McGill Racers were fed August 13 and 14 at their end-of-series trophy celebrations - keel boaters by Joe and Lonna O Brien and board boaters by Susie Boedeker and Sue Radley. The racers and their on and off shore crews owe a big THANK YOU to these members. The August Commodore s Breakfast was hosted by residents of the Mount Lookout neighborhood. A delicious meal was prepared and served by Anu and Fred Day, Karen Sigler, Sue Radley, Joe and Lonna O Brien, Carolyn Harris, and Joe and Penny Monosmith. The light turnout for all their work was disappointing, and begs the question: should we skip August social events at the club, including the Commodore s Breakfast, since it s a time when many members are on vacation? For that matter, what do you think about the Commodore s breakfasts in general? The event started out MUCH simpler, just coffee and donuts, and has evolved into a more complicated event. What do you think? Give us some feedback! The sun came out for a few hours Saturday afternoon, just in time for the Dog Days Cookout. About 50 people enjoyed their meals on the decks, and the kitchen crew had a great time. Thanks to Will Manos, Joe and Lonna O Brien, Marty Chrisman and Joy Clayton, Bob and Jean Drew. I saw Mary Lindsey washing dishes and wiping tables, too. Your Port Captains are planning a craft fair along with the October 22 social event, and several club artists are planning to share their work (just in time for Christmas shopping ). If you or someone you know wants to participate as a vender, please let Margaret McGill or Anu Day know. We d like to highlight hand made arts and crafts. Several people do a lot of behind the scenes work on behalf of the Port Captain. For example, Susie Boedeker regularly launders kitchen linens and Sue Radley organizes the kitchen. Please thank these members when you see them. Some questions about memorial events at LCYC have come up. Often the family and LCYC friends of a deceased member desire to gather at the club for remembrances and fellowship. While LCYC does not officially sponsor them, Club members are welcome to schedule these memorials just as they would any private social event, and there are usually plenty of volunteers who want to help. Complimentary services provided by LCYC include publishing obituaries and notifying members of arrangements via blasts. Don t forget the Labor Day cookout on September 5! We will kick off the high sailing season with hot dogs and hamburgers. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. Food service is 1-3 pm, so you should bring your dish in time to share it. And mark your calendar for the Commodore s Breakfast on September 11. See you on the water or at the club, Margaret McGill & Anu Day 4 September 2016 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club
5 Summer Series Racing Jake Mathis 0n the Weekend of August 13th and 14th the final races of our Summer Club Racing Series came to a Discouraging end. Fred Lindsey was the unfortunate PRO for the races. Thank you Fred for suffering through Mother Nature s worst! The winds were changing direction constantly and blowing from Zero to 28+ Knots? There were only two (2) races on Saturday for the Keelboats due to lack of wind. The Sunday Board Boats race were even more difficult! Winds were shifting to just about all points of the compass. The First race was fairly reasonable but with light winds. The Second race was just the opposite. Strong winds shifting from South to North as a Storm hit with vengeance. One of the Flying Scot was knocked down with all crew in the water. The Chase Boat quickly rescued the crew and Fred Abandoned the Race for the safety. It took a couple of hours to rescue the Turtled Flying Scot, but thanks to the Chase, Committee and Zodiac boats working together with Bill McVey s expertise, the boat was righted and towed back to the club (full of water). The crew had a great dinner on both Saturday and Sunday and trophies were awarded to the Winning Skippers. Special thanks goes out to the Race Committee Crew, the Kitchen Crew and all the shippers and their crew. Now everyone go and sign up for the Fall Club Series, Sew-Mad, Labor Day Sailing Festival and Moonshine Pursuit Regatta!
