1 April 2018 Volume 50 Number 4 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Phil Crane It appears as if Spring has sprung! This is not only evident from the warmer weather and greenery that is growing but also the very successful Spring Fling Regatta held in March. I ve heard nothing but glowing reports and you can read more about it in the Youth Sailing report in this issue There are some changes and additions to report as well. At the Board of Governors level we had a resignation and at the March meeting the Board elected Kathy Leubner to fill the unexpired term. As most of you know, Kathy has been active in the club for many years and we look forward to her being part of the Board. Please congratulate Kathy when you see her. We have also found and hired our third Docks and Grounds employee and are back to the full complement. Please welcome Gary Bones Mercado to the LCYC staff when you see him around the club. I ve noted that it s been about a year since we ve had our last New Member Orientation. We ll have one on April 21st. If you ve joined the club in the last year or so and have not Sailors for the Sea is proud to award the Spring Fling Regatta Hosted by the Lake Canyon Yacht Club Robyn Albritton Sustainability Director Sailors for the Sea SILVER LEVEL CLEAN REGATTAS CERTIFICATION March 17 th to 19 th 2018 David Rockefeller, Jr. Founder Sailors for the Sea been to an orientation, please join us. Whether it s racing in the club series, socializing at any number of Ann s and Vivian s fantastic activities (read about the Italian Dinner!), helping teach people young and old to sail, helping those that have special needs get on the water, raising money for worthy charitable causes (see the Leukemia Cup Regatta) or sailing or working on our own Wurstfest Regatta, there is an activity that you can participate in the will enrich your life and perhaps the life of someone else. We do all of this through the volunteerism that is the spirit of LCYC. And we do recognize some of our super volunteers as you ll see in the Lifetime Service Awards article also in this issue. So, if you aren t already involved in some these activities come out to YOUR club and participate. 2 5th Annual Charles L. Branch M.D. Leukemia Cup Regatta (LCR) June 30 & July 1, 2018 The 5th Annual LCYC Leukemia Cup Regatta (LCR) is dedicated to the memory of Joy Clayton who passed away earlier this year to cancer. For the last 3 years, Joy worked tirelessly on the LCR Silent Auction, bringing it much success. We will miss her energy, dedication and enthusiasm. The LCR will kick off at the Commodore s Breakfast on April 15th with Alana Seger from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in attendance. The Crane and Leubner families will be hosting the breakfast. The menu will consist of quiche, salmon, bagels, sausage and fruit. After breakfast, there will be an LCR Executive Committee meeting on the McKown Deck. LCYC has raised $154,000 over 4 years for the South Central Texas chapter of LLS. Let s bring this total to over $200,000 for this 5th year of LCYC sponsorship! There are 4 fundraising teams already signed up from last year. If you want to start your own fundraising team, just let us know and we will get it set up for you. Keep in mind that these teams don t have to be sailing teams. While there will be a competitive but fun regatta, the primary goal is raise money for LLS in the fight against blood cancers. So step up and start a team. All of us know someone who has been impacted by leukemia and/or lymphoma...so let s make a difference! We would love to have more boats participating this year! There are typically about boats entered, however there are many, many more sitting in slips or on the hard, missing out on some great fun. Following the competition on June 30th is the traditional BBQ, silent auction, and live music. Recognition awards for sponsors and fundraising teams will be presented that evening. Race trophies will be given out Sunday afternoon following the conclusion of the regatta. Please engage in a great cause. Your contributions will make a difference in the lives of so many. If you would like to participate in any way, please give either Phil or me a call. Ray Leubner/Phil Crane LCYC SELECTS 2018 LIFETIME SERVICE AWARD HONOREES Lifetime Service Award Committee The LCYC Board of Governors is pleased to announce that members Robert Borrego, Renee Kizziar, Doug Toepperwein and Jim Kizziar have been selected as recipients of the 2018 Lifetime Service Award. Please join the Board and Club officers in congratulating these members for their distinguished service to the Club and receipt of this award. The Lifetime Service Award may be presented to members who have made outstanding contributions to LCYC for twenty or more years. Factors considered by the Board of Governors when selecting honorees from those nominated by Club members include long term volunteerism, consistent support of Club activities, effective service in elected or appointed positions and demonstration of leadership, sportsmanship and cooperation. This year s recipients have been Club members for 20 to 26 years. They have provided exemplary service to the Club in various volunteer capacities and positions. The 2018 Lifetime Service Award honorees will receive a plaque recognizing their service to LCYC at the annual Lifetime Service Award Dinner on Saturday, April 21, Their names will be inscribed on the Lifetime Service Award Keel Memorial located on the McKown Deck. 3 Learn To Sail Program Report Bill McVey This year s class was a great success by many measures a maximum capacity of 30 students signed up (with 5 still on the waiting list), we had a total of 42 LCYC members volunteer to help either one or both weekends, and after 4 mornings of captivating classroom instruction, weather permitted us to sail on all 4 afternoons! The first weekend focused on teaching the basics of sailing, types of boats, names of parts, sails, lines, etc, directions relative to boat and wind, what a makes a boat go, and how to stop, start, and turn a sailboat. Both afternoons the first weekend we went out using 15 boats with just 2 students on each allowing one to helm and the other to trim sails almost the entire time learning all of the above. Both days we had near-perfect 7-12 mph breeze. The second weekend we used the boats to travel to a destination, sailing to HCYC, learning en route man overboard procedures, navigation, right of way rules between boats and while returning how to sail upwind in pouring rain and mph breeze! It was a great reminder to all on how much longer it takes to sail the same distance upwind as downwind! Ann Cook and Lancine Justin brought smiles to everyone s faces as they rushed to the clubhouse to prepare and have hot chocolate and fresh popcorn waiting for the wet sailors! Actually everyone had been advised to bring dry clothes and I believe almost everyone had. A memorable day for them all. Sunday was graduation day putting all of our emphasis on how to sail a boat well upwind and the prior day s experience lent added interest to the topic! We set up a windward leeward course and had each boat sail it, looking for puffs, trying to sail the closer heading to the destination, tacking when headed, etc. They timed themselves sailing the course the first time, took a break, then sailed it again to try to improve over their lap. Some improved and some didn t but the focus on upwind sailing was definitely time well spent. The student critiques submitted all were very appreciative of our volunteer skippers, crews, instructors and all club members for making this opportunity possible for them. I believe a couple have already submitted applications for LCYC membership and a couple more are considering do so! Those who volunteered to help this year included Mike Stellato, Pete Macler, Lynn Simpson, Chris and VanEtte Christian, Sylvie Mathis, Joe O Brien, Trace Jurica, Rick Cioppa, Ann and Bill Cook, Lancine Justin, Terry and Roger Beasley, Jerry Anderson, Bruce Dunn, Travis Dunn, Bog Godlewski, Leslie Heath, Phil May, Margaret McGill, Rick Mella, Harold Simmons, Bill Cochran, Bob Middleton, Carolyn and Ron Popp, Jack Carter, Glen and Elsa Graham, Joe McDonough, Peter McDonough, Bill Clark, Fred Day, Nance Kilbourne, Bob White, Jean Junker, Dave Sanford, Ray Leubner, Steffen Heininger, and Arnie Wilenken. Please join me in thanking them for giving their time and talents to teach this class of students about the sport we all love! 2018Commodore'sBreakfasts Kathy Leubner The extended Taddia family, anchored by the culinary talents of LCYC members Ed and Georgina Taddia, served up a scrumptious Fiesta Breakfast in March. The 60+ attendees were treated to Belgian waffles, country stuffed eggs, bacon, sausage links and a yummy strawberry yogurt with granola and fresh fruit. The socializing and eating went on - and on - and on! April's breakfast will be hosted by Phil & Barbara Crane and Ray & Kathy Leubner. This breakfast also marks the kickoff for the 5th Annual LCYC Leukemia Cup Regatta. In addition to Ray and his team, Alana Seger, Area Director for the South Central Chapter of LLS, will also be on hand to answer any questions. 4 Adaptive Sailing Volunteers Bill McVey Calling all volunteers! We are hosting three outings again this year to invite special-needs folks, along with their families and aides, to our club to provide them the opportunity to experience sailing. LCYC began this program in 2006 and for the past twelve years both our guests and volunteers have thoroughly enjoyed it many guests have attended multiple times! The current programs we work with are the Door-in-the-Wall organization founded by Barbara Blair in Bandera, and Operation Comfort, a group founded by Janis Roznowski that organizes activities for Wounded Warriors and their families. Our first date this year is Saturday May 5, when we will host recovering wounded warriors, and family members via Operation Comfort. The other two dates are Saturdays as well, June 23, and September 29. Our guests for these two outings will be from the Doorin-the-Wall program. The schedule for each is 11:00 - orientation to club and sailboats 11:30 Lunch; LCYC provides sandwiches, chips, cookies, and drinks for both guests and volunteers 12:00 Assign guests to boats 12:15 Go to boats, sail 2:45 Return to docks 3:00 End of event We would like to have 10 keelboats and skippers and also 10 additional experienced sailors (in case the skipper decides to go for a swim!) so we can accommodate up to 25 guests. We also need two volunteers each date to set out the lunch and clean up afterwards. May 5 will be just a few weeks away when you see this Ditty Bag article so I would appreciate very much hearing from you soon if you would be like to volunteer for this outing. Mary Lindsey has already volunteered to help with lunch for this date you have to get up pretty early to get ahead of this young lady!! Our second outing is scheduled for June 23 which will be just a few weeks later; it would be great to start getting volunteers for that date as well if you are interested. Thanks very much, Bill Yacht Clubs and the Sailing (Sport) Ecosystem Chris Fogle Over the weekend of March 17th-18th, LCYC once again hosted the annual Spring Fling Youth Regatta the second stop on the Texas Sailing Association s Youth Circuit in Our Club and the volunteers who helped received high marks from racers and families who visited us over that weekend. No surprise there it s become an LCYC tradition to knock the socks off the TSA community with our youth regatta planning and execution! The story behind the LCYC s foray into the TSA circuit is an interesting one it began in 2005 largely to provide an opportunity for LCYC s youth sailors to compete on our home waters. I ll leave the full story to our historians and those who made it happen, like our esteemed member Bill McVey. The thing that probably makes you go, hmmmm though, is considering why we do this every year. It s true - putting on this event takes a good many volunteer and staff hours. Considering the significant decrease in the number of youth sailors from LCYC participating over the past four events, it s understandable why someone would unfortunately question whether we should continue. But I offer this viewpoint, which I am confident others share. Yacht clubs or the myriad versions play an important role in our sport. And, yes, it s a sport even if you don t personally race. Yacht clubs provide a place for our sport to exist. Without the venues, we couldn t very well hold the events. Sailing is no different from other sports or hobbies when it comes to the benefits of participating. For our kids, a sailing experience yields confidence and self-reliance ( alone on the sea ) appreciation for external forces ( weather, waves, and equipment ) mental flexibility ( sailing to the weather mark is not a straight-forward proposition ) an appreciation for rules and the integrity to self-police ( do your 720 ). If you don t agree, you can stop reading. Sailing also yields friendships whether they are life-long or just for a season. The kids on the circuit know each other, and each of the 16 circuit stops throughout the year are mini-reunions. Sailors and families catch up; a game you played at the last one is continued; conversations updated; and joint plans made for the next stop. Each stop on the circuit is unique each brings a different set of factors for the sailors to navigate. The more they are tested, the stronger they become. The lake-sailors learn to master the waves on the coast, and the coasties figure out what a wind shift looks like on a temperamental lake. You don t get that if you stick only to your home waters. Therefore, it s a good thing yacht clubs offer their facilities every year to visiting sailors. What does the yacht club get? We turn a profit that s true but there are far more effective ways for a yacht club to make money. To answer the question talk to someone who s volunteered at one of these events. Seeing our youth untethered for a day and demonstrating extreme boat handling skills in oftentimes tricky conditions is exhilarating, if not inspirational. They re courteous thanking the race committee each day and they test our expertise and challenge us to know our sport better than we might. In the really long-term view, we re helping to promote the next generation of sailors who might in-turn become the next generation of people who buy our boats pay our Club s membership fees train our next sailors. You just never know. But if we stunt the growth of our sport by making it harder for the sport to exist, we do know what happens. Yacht clubs provide a place for our sport to exist. South Texas is blessed to have LCYC as the crown jewel in this ecosystem! 4 April 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

5 Spring Fling Regatta - a Clean Green Event Debbie Fogle LCYC Green Team Thank you to all the volunteers and especially to my LCYC Spring Fling Green Team volunteers - Carolyn Popp, Julian Craven, and Chris Fogle for helping make our event a huge success. We were able to reduce the amount of single use plastic water bottles especially on the water. The racers all received personalized water bottles instead of t-shirts and were encouraged to use them ON and OFF the water! We are also proud of our many volunteers who brought their own reusable water bottles and cups to further reduce the use of plastic and Styrofoam at the event. Another area we were able to successfully promote - thanks to Sailors for the Sea was a move away from plastic straws. Each competitor received a metal reusable straw with the message to say, NO! to plastic straws. It was great to hear everyone actually discussing what we can all do to help with the issue of plastic in our waters. At the same time, we remain challenged by our use of plastic silverware a very necessary evil for an event like this one. I am hoping we can think of an alternative for the Club in the future. If you have any ideas, please contact me. We had a lot of positive feedback for our efforts to hold a clean regatta, but we still have a long way to go not only as a regatta but also as a Club. Consider making little changes in your own use of plastics; it will go a long way, I promise! Remember - as sailors, our playing field is the water, and that is where much of our trash ends up. Make a difference for the future of our sport - recycle, reuse and repurpose! See you on the water. Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Vivian Miller March came in like the proverbial lion and brought some glorious days and some not-so glorious weather. Acknowledging the uncertain weather, there were few social events at the clubhouse, but the ones we held were well attended. On Sunday, March 11th, Georgina and Ed Taddia and family hosted a sumptuous brunch of Belgian waffles, stuffed eggs, sausage, bacon and fresh fruit, along with coffee and mimosas. Sixty people entered the clubhouse to find a field of dazzling table-top flowers and to enjoy the feast and socialize with other club members. Georgina, Ed and family--thank you for kicking off spring with a gorgeous and tasty breakfast! Our newest event, Italian Night, took place on March 24 at 5:30 pm and drew over 90 RSVPs--some challenging us to meet expectations of native Italians! We said bring it on and bring it on we did. Members contributed a variety of antipasto items which Kathy Leubner artfully arranged on the McKown deck. The main menu served inside the clubhouse included fresh pasta with traditional Bolognese (meat) sauce, baked ziti, salad, garlic bread, and limoncello tiramisu--prepared by your port captains with help from volunteers. Tom and Claudette Cozzi assisted with hosting along with Linda Arnold and Lancine Justin. Debbie and Gary Kirkham expertly put the galley back in order afterwards. Speaking of RSVPs--we want to be prudent stewards of club funds while meeting our goals of delicious and fun events. Your RSVP helps us make sure there will be enough food for all with minimal leftovers. Please assist us and the club by letting us know if you plan to attend an event. The next major dinner will be the Lifetime Service Award/Founder s Day meal on Saturday, April 21st at 6:00 pm. It will be a sit-down dinner served by Marvin Arnold s Sea Scouts. Dwight and Patti Stickle are planning a wonderful menu of ceviche and shrimp cocktail appetizers, roast pork loin with mushroom gravy and roasted root vegetables, salad, hot bread, and short cake with fresh mangos and whipped cream for dessert. You don t want to miss this one! RSVP here: Are you a new--or newish--member? Volunteering at our social events gets you into the thick of things and gives you an opportunity to meet and network with other members. Please consider lending a hand. Just let us know by ing PortCaptain@lcyc.net and we ll find a spot for you to help our hosts who have already generously volunteered for these upcoming events: Spring Work Day Breakfast/Lunch (Sat/28APR) - Anu Day Spring Series Boardboat Award Dinner (Sun/06MAY) - Elsa & Glen Graham Spring Series Keelboat Award Dinner (Sat/12MAY) - Laurie McGill & Chuck Begley Memorial Day Fish Fry (Mon/28MAY) - The Lindsay s and Jean & Bob Drew Watch the Wednesday e-blasts for more details. 6 Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle We had a fantastic TSA youth circuit regatta on March 17th and 18th the annual Spring Fling Regatta. The activities began on Friday the 16th with near 90 degree-weather and a light breeze welcoming a few sailors to a mid-afternoon tune up sail, and a soup dinner that night courtesy of Carolyn Popp and Debbie Fogle welcomed the Friday-night arrivals. Saturday was St. Patrick s Day, and racing was from 11:00 a.m. until almost 5:30 p.m. An afternoon squall spared the Opti fleets, but chased our 420 and Laser sailors all the way to the dock. After dinner, the duet Holes in the Ozone featuring our very own Shaun Besch provided our guests a musical treat until 8 p.m. They were so good, we ve already secured them for next year s regatta! We were fortunate to complete between 6 and 8 races on Saturday on all the lines, because Sunday was a real drifter. The Opti Green fleet got off one more race, but we finally called the day at 11 a.m. LCYC was proudly represented by Caleb Fogle who placed 4th in the Laser 4.7 fleet. Racing was tight in this fleet, and Caleb earned his first bullet of his TSA career in the second race. Way to go! This was also Dylan Tomko s first TSA regatta in the Opti Green fleet. Although Dylan races under the Houston burgee, he ll be a regular on our docks this year, and we re so happy for him entering the circuit! LCYC received many thanks from our guests for our hospitality and organization. We had many firsts this year the first year for us to be a registered Clean Regatta through our partnership with Sailors for the Sea; the fist time we had musical entertainment (yea!); and the first time we used an electronic scanning technology to register when sailors were on the water, and when they came off. All around, a wonderful weekend and we could not have done it without the awesome support of our Docks and Grounds crew and an army er, a navy- of volunteers! We are grateful to Vice Commodore Mike Samulin for his support on-site each day, and to the LCYC Board for Governors for their continuing support of the broader Texas sailing community with this annual event. We are also very grateful to Jake Mathis, Rick Mella, and Chris Christian who were our PROs for the Opti Green, Opti RWB, and Laser/420 lines, respectively. They did fantastic jobs setting up and managing the courses. Our hats off to these awesome PROs! Also, a big kudo to Ken Taylor, the developer of Regatta Network. Ken helped us manage the regatta using Regatta Network, deployed the QR-scanning technology, AND handled our scoring! Thank you, Ken. To Bill and Ann Cook, and Dwight and Patti Stickle who donated the use of their boats for starting lines the scariest place for an anchored boat thank you! To our Docks and Grounds crew Julian Craven, Donnie Ahr, and Gary "Bones" Mercado THANK YOU! They were everywhere making sure our boats, marks and tackle were ready each day, setting up the big tent and parking areas, and making sure our guests were comfortable and safe. Finally we want to recognize all our volunteers who donated their time, energy, expertise, and in many cases their power boats to help us promote our sport in the South Texas area. Please check out the photos from the regatta on the LCYC website. See you on the water! Continued on Next Page Dylan Tomko ready for a day of racing! 6 April 2018 Copyright Lake Canyon Yacht Club

8 Cat Corner Travis Mitchell Spring is here and the 2018 Multihull season officially kicks off at the Ides of March Regatta on beautiful Lake Sommerville March 24th and 25th. Canyon Lake Cats-Fleet 128 will be represented by three sailors this year; Will Rottgering on F-18 along with LCYC s very own Drew Riddle and Joe Monosmith on Hobie 17 s. Good luck guys! Next month we will post the results of this race while getting set for the Hill Country Regatta on Lake Bucannon April 28thand 29th. LCYC s home regatta, Longneck, will be sponsored by Canyon Lake Cats-Fleet 128 May 19th and 20th and is sure to be a great time this year attracting sailors from the Austin fleet and Texas City Dike Yacht Club. January and February have been building months for the fleet with the introduction of a few new fleet members, new fleet logo, and a new T-shirt design for the Longneck regatta. LCYC s Father and Son team, Kirk and Davis McMullin, have been working on two Hobie 18 s getting them fixed up with new sails and may even compete against each other during the Spring and Summer regattas. Clad in neoprene and other cold water gear, some of the Hobie 16 sailors in the group such as Kyle Polzin, Ernie Luce, Brandon Buckley and Travis Mitchell have already hit the water this month for some practice time. Charlie Mayer with his S-9 foiling cat and Steven Acquart have already been racing this year in the Yacht Club s monthly club racing. Warmer weather is on the way and our traveling band of boats will be running around Texas competing in several lake and gulf coast regattas so please stay up on the race schedule posted on our Face-Book Page, Canyon Lake Cats-Fleet 128. We are always looking for crew members or anyone wanting to simply get on the lake and have some fun. There s nothing like flying a hull on a catamaran so please contact us through Face-Book to join us for some weekend sailing. Some of our LCYC catamaran members will be working with the youth sailing directors, Chris and Debbie Fogle, to coordinate a joint fun sail for kids and parents this Summer. The intent is to get more people and kids interested in multi-hull sailing in a low stress fun environment and where else to do this than beautiful Canyon Lake. Dates to be announced.
