Volunteer, noun from perspective of recipient of service: Someone who contributes time, effort and talent to meet a need or furr a mission, without going on payroll. LCYC is a volunteer driven club. When club was started it was run completely by volunteers. As it has grown from original 20 charter members, some of work has been taken over by paid employees. We still need our volunteers. As I look back over past two months, amount of time, effort, and talent given by club members has been astounding. There is no way we could have paid for such talent. We have had many projects going on background that require expertise that we need to call on. Don t be surprised if you are called on in future to lend your help with a project. There are many ways you can volunteer beside on big projects. Your time is just as valuable to us as your knowledge. You do not have to have a business in a related field to help with some projects. There are Commodore s Breakfasts that need a host or kitchen help. Anu Day is contact person to sign up for one of se. You do not have to be a 5-star chief. Dave Lily is contact person for TSA Spring Fling Youth Regatta. This is a very well attended regatta. There are plenty of places to volunteer. The excitement that se young sailors have can be contagious. Excitement about sailing is a good thing to catch. They sail all out and leave nothing behind. It is a bit like herding cats, but so much fun. If a large regatta is not really where you want to cut your teeth working with our youth, Junior sailing program can always use a few volunteers. We have great coaches instructing our kids but re is always room for more help. Spring Work Day is scheduled for April 2nd. Josef and his crew always have some projects we can help with. Painting, trimming, and many or projects will be ready for us. I will have more information on this volunteer opportunity later. Now is time to get it on your calendar. Race days are always in need of help. Generally speaking, our race days are on second weekends of month. This year s March races will be on first weekend. Keelboat racers volunteer on Boardboat days and Boardboat racers volunteer on Keelboat days. If you are just learning about racing and want to learn more, you can volunteer. There is always someone willing to share information. Rick Mella is person to contact to volunteer for race duty. Remember we all had to start sometime. If you are looking for a way to meet new members, first New Member Orientation is April 23rd. Contact me if you want to help out. The 23rd will also be our Founders Day celebration. In next two months re are at least 14 opportunities to volunteer. Not only is volunteering a great way to support our club, it is also a way to reconnect with its membership. On a personal note this month, a fourth generation of sailors has been born to Lindsey household. Rhys Lloyd was born to our daughter Sarah and her husband Joe. Fred and I can t wait to get him out on a boat. It will be a while until he fits into a lifejacket and topsiders. We just have to wait. Think about where you can spend some volunteer time and n sign up. The more volunteers we have stronger we are as a club. I hope to see you soon eir on grounds or on water. 2 Saturday, April 2nd 8AM Noon LCYC Clubhouse Spring Work Day is a great opportunity to show support for club. The day starts with a meeting in clubhouse and assignment SPRING WORK DAY SAIL CANYON LAKE of projects selected by Property Manager and D&G Chairman. This year re will be tree trimming and painting, including slip numbers. All equipment and supplies are provided by D&G staff, however, members should feel free to bring ir own equipment and work gloves. Remember that completion of se tasks frees up our D&G staff to work on more difficult projects. From The Treasurer - Paying Your Bill The most common question I receive is why Lake Canyon Yacht Club ("LCYC") does not accept credit card payments. That's easy! Because being a credit card vendor costs vendor money. Do you know small businesses that don't accept credit cards? I use many small, local businesses that don't accept credit cards for exactly this reason. In or words, wouldn't you rar money you pay LCYC go to operations of club instead of to administrative expenses. Tired of writing checks? Here are a couple of ideas: Pre-pay your charges. Many of our members do! Write a check for a few months of charges in advance. Or write a check for a rounded, estimated amount. You will still receive a statement; your statement will just indicate a credit balance. Just check your statement to see when your account has a positive "due" balance again. Then pay for a few more months. Thus, you choose how often to write checks. Use your financial institution's fee "check pay" service. You do this through your institution's web site. You can set up to pay one payment at a time or for regular recurring payments. This is usually less trouble than an automated credit card payment and it is free for both sides of transaction. The warnings I give when using this service are: set timing of your payment well in advance of due date. Institutions routinely group toger check processing and may make your payment up to a week after you instructed, and do not neglect looking at your statement. If you set up a routine payment for basic charges you incur at club, non-routine charges can result in your account eventually becoming overdue. The most common nonroutine charges are race fees and ice charges. Neir of se charges are very expensive but balance not paid can accumulate until your account is in an over-due status. When you incur non-routine charges, just order an additional one-time payment, or increase amount of your monthly routine payment for a few months. I hope this is helpful. 3 LCYC Knot Tying Seminar Jean Junker & Donna Rice PortCo-Captains Anu Day & Margaret McGill With recent influx of new members and with good participation in our Learn to Sail classes we are again presenting a class about handling lines and knot tying. Basic line handling and knots is covered briefly in Learn to Sail classes but a dedicated class just for knots seems appropriate for our membership and can be attended as a precursor to Learn to Sail classes or as a refresher. Early in my sailing years I had personally struggled with recalling how to tie knots when pressure was on and I didn't realize until much later that learning just two or three knots well would make my sailing experience more enjoyable and less stressful. I have since learned many more knots and as with most skills find that practice over time is a good teacher. It always amazes me when I sit in a group and we start talking about knots, re is always someone with a new one or a new way to tie that I didn't know about but that y take for granted as being common knowledge. Our Knot Tying seminar will be held at LCYC Clubhouse on Saturday March 19th at 11:00am and is open to sailors of all abilities. The seminar will be about an hour and a half in length and should get attendees comfortable tying 3-4 basic knots and we will cover about 7-8 in total. Handouts will be provided to assist in learning and are provided for attendees to take home for practice after seminar is over. There is no prerequisite for class and all material including lines for tying will be provided. Come ready to learn, practice and have some fun. Saturday, March 19th at 11:00 AM We plan to cover following knots and hope to get to practice each one depending on how quickly everyone picks up basic techniques: Coiling Lines & Chain Sinnet Knot Stopper Knots Figure Eight and Overhand Cleat Hitch or Belaying to a Cleat Clove Hitch and Rolling Hitch Bowline and Flying Bowline Demonstration Square Knot or Reef Knot vs Granny Knots Sheet Bend Round Turns and Half Hitches Selected resources for tying se and many or knots: On Web: On Web: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ List_of_knots On Web: iphone App: What Knot To Do (Columbia Sportswear) iphone App: ASA - American Sailing Association See you in class and Let's have some Fun! LCYC has been busy for first couple of months of year! The January 23 Long Distance Race produced a house full of hungry sailors. Thanks to Laurie McGill and Mary Lindsey for helping to feed m. The house was full again on February 14 for delicious Commodore s Breakfast, prepared and served by Ed & Lancine Booth, Ann & Bill Cook, and Gwen & Paul Cunningham. Anu Day provided decorations, putting everyone in mood for Valentine s Day. We also fed club series racers in February. Joe O Brien assembled a crew to prepare meals for Keel Boat racers, and y served hot dogs. Elizabeth Bentzen, Laurie McGill and I reprised hot dogs next day for Board Boat racers, who came in a couple of hours early (before pulled pork was done). Only 2 boats ended up racing that day, so we also fed juniors and coaches along with Flying Scot racers and race committee. Lesson learned: if you re going to serve something that has to be cooked all day, do it day before so you can whip it out at a moment s notice! Anu and I want to thank all who have volunteered to prepare and serve meals at LCYC. Some, like Joe O Brien and Susie Boedeker, even volunteered for recurring events, i.e., series racing meals. We are still seeking volunteers to host April and or Commodore s Breakfasts and a few or events. Please stop one of us at club, call us (numbers in directory), or us at portcaptain@lcyc.net if you might be interested in hosting an event. It s a GREAT way to get to know or people, and re are some GREAT people in our club! And you will have plenty of support from Port Captains, from beginning to end. Please mark your calendars for March 6 Commodore s Breakfast, hosted by Ed and Georgina Taddia. Remember, it s on first weekend of month because of TSA youth regatta March Also plan to attend LCYC Spring Work Day on April 2, Commodore s Breakfast on April 9, and Founder s Day celebration April 23. The latter event follows a new member orientation and honors Lifetime Service Award recipients, so it s a wonderful time to meet new LCYC members and connect with ors. See you on water or at club, Anu Day & Margaret McGill 3 DittyBag

4 12 TH Annual TSASpringFlingYouthRegatta Dave Lilley LCYC will be hosting TSA Youth Regatta on March 12 and 13, Participation in this event continues to grow. Last year we had a very impressive turnout and expect same this year. As always, we will have opportunity to share our hospitality, great racing venue, camping facilities, and wonderful meals, all of which have made this evnt a staple for many on TSA circuit. The regatta will also give our youth sailors opportunity share in competition and camaraderie of ir peers. This year we expect to have standard boats/classes as flollows, plus O'pen Bic fleet: Optimist pram in four separate fleets, Novice (age 7-15) Fleets by age for 7-10, and Laser in two fleets 4.7 for lighter or younger sailors Radial for older or heavier sailors 420 double-handed boat O'pen Bic Because of last year s unexpected and unprecedented level of attendance, this year we will organize as we do for Wurstfest Regatta. Therefore, I am requesting additional volunteers to make sure everything runs smoothly and safely. I believe we will need at least 45 volunteers on water to staff three race courses, registration, safety boats, protest committees, spectator boats, ramp traffic, etc. The Notice of Race and registration page for our TSA Spring Fling Regatta will be online shortly. For more information or to sign up, please go to I also want to take this opportunity to once again ask for volunteers. It takes volunteers on and off water to make our Spring Fling Regatta a success. As of today, we are short for both. Please contact me at David.A.Lilley@gmail.com or if you would like to help on water. If you would like to help in kitchen, please contact Michelle Lilley at Michelle.M.Lilley@ gmail.com or Opti Fleet s Women'sSailingProgram Lynn Simpson It is hard to believe that LCYC s Women s Sailing Program has been running strong for five years! Where does time go? I am having so much fun introducing women to wonderful sport of sailing. I am lucky; I get to share my passion of sailing with some incredibly enthusiastic women. Let s face it, women make amazing sailors and we need to get more women out on water! That being said, LCYC will do its part in getting more women out on water by offering following classes for 2016: May (Weekday Class) Learn to Sail: cost $60.00, class size 3 students, class times 09:30am 4:30pm. Online registration will open on April 4. June Sunfish Class: cost $60.00, class size 6 students. Prerequisite: completion of a Learn to Sail class or prior sailing experience. Class times 09:30am 4:30pm. Online registration will open on April 18. July Learn to Sail: cost $60.00, class size 6 students. Class times 09:30am 4:30pm. Online registration will open on June 6. The learn to sail classes are designed to introduce women to this wonderful sport and cover sailing basics: parts of a sailboat, parts of a sail, wind awareness, basic sail trim, docking/ departing, safety, rigging/de-rigging, and knots. The sunfish class will be completely hands on and cover: parts of sunfish, rigging/ de-rigging, docking/departing, getting out of irons, capsize recovery, sailing upwind/ downwind, safety, knots and lots of on water practice. The finale of program is women s regatta SEW-MAD which takes place on August 27. More detail on that as we get closer to date. In meantime, pencil in Women s Regatta on your calendars! That wraps it up for me. Let s go Sailing. SAIL CANYON LAKE! 4 DittyBag

5 Charles L. Branch MD LeukemiaCupRegatta Ray Leubner Nationally, Leukemia Cup is a series of fund raising sailing events that benefit Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America (LLS). America s Cup winner Gary Jobson, himself a lymphoma survivor, is national chairman. Last year, re were 40 Leukemia Cup Regattas in USA, only 2 of which were held in Texas. In LCYC s two years of participation, $66,000 has been raised for South Central Texas Chapter! LCYC s third annual LCR Kickoff Event will be held at April 10th Commodore s Breakfast. Please plan on being re! I ve signed up with Board to lead this effort again and will be reaching out in March to former and potential new committee members to join in fight against blood cancers. Thank goodness we have a committed Commodore and Board s support for this LCYC charity effort. Major committees include Fund Raising, Publicity, Food and Race. Over last couple of years, Fundraising Committee, 10 very active Fundraising Teams, and a Silent Auction have been central to our success. Of course we hope all those who made last two years so successful will be back, but we always welcome new blood (pun intended). So if you d like to join a fantastic team and have some fun participating in a very worthy cause, please give me a call or send me an . In great tradition of LCYC, anyone that I ve asked has accepted challenge, and several have volunteered of ir own accord. Please call me at or me at rleubner@ satx.rr.com if you want to help in any way. With July 4th falling on a Monday this year, BOG approved a move to July 2 & 3 for LCR so that those participants wanting to return home for 4th of July festivities will have plenty of time to do so. As for regatta itself, we re planning to follow our traditional 2 day format with one day devoted to long distance racing and or to buoys racing. Following racing on July 2th, re will be traditional BBQ Dinner, Silent Auction, and live music. That evening, awards will be presented to our sponsors and trophies to our fundraising teams. After racing on July 3rd, trophies will be awarded to competing fleets during lunch. LCYC has made a far larger difference than we ever thought possible in fight against blood cancers. 6 JUNIOR SAILING -Taking The Helm Sylvie Mathis After reading Taking Helm by Dawn Riley, I realized that my challenge has been a good one too. It's still a challenge; each day I take helm re is so much to do. The parts of Junior Sailing Program are like sailing, as are so many things in life. Wind, hull, mast, mainsail, jib, rudder and tiller all toger are what make a sailing experience. The wind in my sail came to me after reading Saving Sailing by N S. that Harold Simmons gave me. Then Harold and Maureen approached me to take helm of beast. I was hooked at ir first sentence, but I needed to talk with in-house PRO. Jake and I agreed, Youth Chair of a non-existent youth group. At time only Brandon Cassard was a regular youth sailor and was not under any Club coaching. We needed a hull. The hull needed to be designed and n built. I could not do it myself, so I recruited a few friends: Harold, Chris, Duane, Dave and Patricio. To build this specific hull we needed to know more about ourselves -- our general base of knowledge and our base technics. We all became US Sailing Level 1 Instructors and I met Rich, Greta and Walt. The team of builders was created and we learned to work harder. We became Coaches with Level 2 & 3 certification. But n we needed to spin a mast. For woodworking, precision is key. The mast needed to be strong, straight, and high enough. I pulled all books on sailing I had in house. I reviewed all sailing magazines I could put my hands on. I created, according to US Sailing standard and with help of Bruce Dunn, first syllabus of LCYC Junior Sailing Program. The challenge of mast was just beginning. Designing mainsail was something else. However with a head, and a tack you got a clew that leach is opposite to luff of mainsail. So with that I needed a mission; refore a mission statement was developed. Here is what Junior Sailing Committee came up with: Provide a safe educational environment and offer opportunities for youth members to learn skills and competency in sailing. The programs are designed to help demonstrate principles of sportsmanship, teamwork, and responsibility among our young sailors. Our goals are to foster sportsmanship during racing and recreational sailing. Now for headsail trimming details and timing. Even without a spinnaker, timing is everything. Sunday afternoon from 1 4pm: no conflict with school sports or church, and during football in fall. But it works; it's actually perfect. This year, we are introducing a sailing practice on Saturday starting February 27th, EXCEPT on March because of Spring Fling TSA Regatta. This extra sailing time is opened to all for tiller time with security. And you know what y say about tiller time. It's key to better sailing. The rudder and tiller need to work toger too. As long as we have volunteers willing to give ir time, ir energy, and ir knowledge, we are going to windward mark. We are always looking for new volunteers willing to give and learn. Sailing mentors are also something we appreciate, so get that dinghy out from under house and come sailing on Saturday! Bring a lunch, n it's free sailing. With creation of a great vessel of knowledge we started to create new fleets of sailboats. Some generous gifts from Canyon Lake Sailing Foundation granted to Junior Sailing four (4) O pen Bics, brand new sailboats at LCYC. After Texas Sailing Association Youth Circuit recommended C420, CLSF purchased one for improvement of LCYC Junior Sailors. The C420 is a college prerequisite sailboat for junior sailors -- and challenge continues. The list of needs also keeps going. Besides new volunteers, we need newer sailboats. We need helmets to protect from boom concussion, and we need money to support sailing campaign. Please read at how to make tax-exempt donations to Canyon Lake Sailing Foundation. Taking helm has not been smooth sailing, no pun intended. I'm my own person, with my integrity and my principals, but I have drama and commitment in my heart. I'm loud and I have a definite passion for LCYC Junior Sailing and our Club. Please contact me if you can help in any way or shape at juniorsailing@lcyc.net or sail by on starboard to see us on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. 7 RACEProgram Winter Series Keel Boat & Board Boat Regatta Rick Mella PRO Saturday, Dec 12th, 2015, 26 Keel Boats were looking forward to start of LCYC 2015/2016 Winter Series, only to have Mor Nature throw Race Committee a curve ball. At start of Skipper s meeting winds were blowing at a steady 18 mphs, with forecast of mphs by 1pm, and increasing throughout day. The decision not to sail was unanimous. Sunday, Dec 13th, 2015, 7 Flying Scots & one Sunfish were set to begin ir Winter Series only to suffer from previous day s wind storm, with winds steady at mphs, dropping down in afternoon. With that forecast, RC started four FS s board boats at 12:05pm, with or four board boats electing to stay behind break wall. As winds calmed down reaching between 6-8 mphs by mid-day, three board boat races were completed, giving fleet a head start into 2015/2016 regatta series. January, 9th, 2016, with 2nd month underway, Saturday s forecast was a repeat of December s Keel Boat wear map from SailFlow. With winds predicted to reach 22 mphs, 26 Keel boats were set to race, only to have regatta turn out as Survival of Fittest. Sixteen keel boats started race 1 at 12:05pm, with only 12 finishing race one. As race 2 got underway many boats had set ir mainsail 2nd reef point, 12 boats rounded & finished course, with winds gusting to over 33 mphs & temperatures staying below 55 degrees. A third race was started, but out of 12 boats still sailing, only 6 finished Windward/Leeward course. January, 10th, 2016, Sunday, Board Boat Winter Series, temperatures still hovering around 51 degrees race one got underway at 12:13pm, with three Flying Scots passing through starting line and 5 minutes later one Opti, junior sailor Caleb Folge making his way to a first place finish. February, 13th, 2016, Saturday s forecast brought smiles to all as 26 Keel Boats started race 1, having a small delay due to light winds and a very thin race committee crew. Three races were completed by J-22s, PHRF Spin, Big Boat, PHRF Non-Spin A/B, and Cruisers. Valentine s Day, Feb 14th, hearts were in right place but only two Flying Scots made race course to better ir place standings and enjoy great sailing wear.
