7 C U S T O M E Q U I P M E N T Photo : M49 Azzura Marine The custom projects to supply special equipment for ocean cruising or racing maxi-yachts require high tech means: computerised design, technical knowledge in metallurgy and composite materials, and a data-base that is constantly updated. Moreover, all kinds of projects delivered by the Facnor team requires a good response, an efficient shipping management as well as an innovative spirit and capacity in order to fulfil the needs of the ocean sailor. Success in all projects has placed Facnor in the top rank of suppliers of custom equipment... MAXI YACHTS EXCELLENCE M eeting a technical capacity in design and production as well as the specific knowledge of the requirements of ocean racing equipment, Facnor is now considered as "the most excellent" in furling systems. For over 20 years, we have been leaders in innovation (patents), design and production of furling systems. We lead in custom products and have also been the favourite partner for many ocean skippers. By involving in ocean racing equipment (Open and trimarans 60') Facnor has developed a specific technical knowledge. The loads supported by super yachts and sea "Formula 1s" are very close. Like the ocean racing boats, the maxi yacht projects are rigorously carried out by the Facnor team. 8 MAXI COURSE Facnor is one of the best-known manufacturer of furling systems for the ocean racing mono - and multihulls. The repeated successful tests carried out at sea by winning ocean racers as well as Facnor Team's inclination for challenges and innovation pushed our company to a leading position. EXCELLENCE projects such as the two ABN AMRO Open 70', the 60' trimaran Geant of the skipper, Michel Desjoyeaux, as well as the different Mari-Cha maxi yachts (of which the latest 140' one). Motivated by the same desire to succeed in our projects, we are proud of our long term cooperation with the most famous boat racing Teams. In France, we worked notably with the well-known Groupama Team on the furling equipment for their three maxi trimarans. Although the third Groupama racing trimaran (100 feet) is much more bigger than the two first ones, our customer equally trusted us. We had already prooved our capacity of innovating, the constant high quality of our products and our reactive solutions to their problems. Like the skippers and the project managers we are very demanding and give our best to succeed... Photo : J. Nash, TEAM ABN AMRO Ocean races obviously require a high level of skills in boat equipment manufacturing. Like in Formula One the greatest asset of a team is the capacity of finding ahead the most adequate technological solutions. Every parameter of such complex projects needs to be calculated with precision and tested before the race. For this reason, project managers of ocean racing boats work with the equipment suppliers far ahead before the race starts. This is the race before the Race... Our Teams like meeting such challenges keeping in mind that our products have "to cross the line" (generally in both ways). Facnor has worked on various requiring boat KNOW-HOW, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Our Design team creates tailor made equipment in order to improve the performance of the product: tension, resistance, weight, handling... Every parameter is measured and simulated thanks to our research and development means (powerful softwares and computers). Each project is considered as unique and dealt with as such. Photo : Yvan Zedda / Groupalmam III PRODUCT REPORT The aim for Bel team was to study the technical solutions that could meet demands of racing boats : lightness, extreme hardiness and efficiency. The technical features of the product are very important but the way it is used too. Not only the device must bear high loads but also the sailor must save time when installing and using it. Facnor team analysed in a very rational way the loads supported by the furling systems on this kind of boat. This has created a close cooperation. With Facnor, we have developed together specific Open 60 racing products and this partnership keeps going». 9 Photo Credit : Barry Pickthall / PPL /F. Konyukhov CARBON FURLING SYSTEMS PRODUCT REPORT Fedor Konyukhov, skipper Russian Open 85 maxi yacht Trading Network Alye Parusa We have started our cooperation with FACNOR in Facnor offered us very reliable furling system to furl all front sails. Sailing single-handed on a maxi yacht requires a lot of attention and looking after the sails. I wanted a system that will allow me to reduce large sails area as fast a possible and at the same time withstand harsh environment of the ocean sailing, particularly in the Southern Ocean. Facnor came up with custom made furlers fitted with PBO stays that are light but strong. For the last 3 years we sailed over miles and never had any complains. In my boat will sail in Antarctica Cup a race around Antarctica and this will be another ultimate test for the equipment. I am confident that Facnor furling gear won t let me down. In comparison with existing products fitted with foil sections, the carbon furling system offers the big advantage of gaining in weight (around 50%). The water drop" shaped sections offer a better aero dynamism. The section components being glued together resist better to torque than an assembling with screws. CUSTOM Unlike continuous line Code zero & Gennaker furlers, these "structural systems" are fitted permanently on the sailing boat. It is an "in and out" furling system to handle Genoa, Solent, Staysail, or even ORC. The structural system components are: a swivel fixed on the mast, a continuous line drum fixed on the chain plate, and an anti-twist cable linking both mechanisms. This cable transfers efficiently the rotation from the drum to the swivel and is captive from the sail STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS tape. The sail is latched at the tack and halyard points. The main advantage of this system is the saving in weight, higher than a carbon headsail furling system fitted with a fibre forestay. Photo : Gunboat Facnor has managed to create a significant knowhow to design and conceive custom parts. CUSTOM CODE ZERO & GENNAKER FURLERS Photo Credit : Y. Zedda (Groupama III) Facnor is "the" precursor in manufacturing continuous line Code zero & Gennaker furlers, we have supplied these since 1998 and in that we are often copied but never equalled. Most 60' monohulls and multihulls are now equipped with Facnor continuous line Code zero & Gennaker furlers: very light, reliable and safely handled alone. These furlers are designed to support the high working and breaking load of over 500m 2 Gennakers. These boats are meant for rent and endure intensive use, almost all over the year. Our fleet sails all over the globe and mainly in the West Indies and the Mediterranean area. Regarding furling equipment, our requests were the following : an excellent compromise between quality and price (above all, no after sale services to cope with because of our scattered fleet), short delivery times and an efficiency to solve technical problems proper to big units. The products which met the most our expectations were the Facnor LS furlers, which give us complete satisfaction. 17 C O N T I N U O U S L I N E F U R L I N G & EFFICIENT & AESTHETIC Facnor, the world leader in continuous line Gennaker furlers, introduces a unique and modern design for headsail furling systems. This range of new products was developed from our experience with designing continuous line furlers for ocean racing teams. Now sailors can enjoy the benefits of our innovative continuous line system on any boat. Continuous line furling system: from ocean race to cruising In the past the continuous line furling systems used to be fitted on Gennaker furlers or Headsail structural furlers. However, they are now available on the RC headsail reefing systems. Compared to a conventional drum, the advantages of a continuous line system are numerous: a bigger luff available, greater furling power due to a larger diameter drum, no risk of overriding. A technology directly developed in racing Gennaker furlers or "structural system" (structural furler, see page 10) fitted on Open 60's. Furthermore, this model can be fitted on existing Facnor reefing system (R range). 26 EMERGENCY SYSTEM Facnor has designed a new emergency back-up system for electric and hydraulic furling gears. This system is faster, safer and easier to use than a manual winch handle Facnor emergency system for motorised furlers: quick, easy and reliable.. Facnor has designed a new emergency back-up system for electric and hydraulic furlers. This new system is faster, safer and easier to use than a manual winch handle. Most electric furlers is provided with a manual back-up system, so the sail can be furled in case of power loss, usually with a winch handle. Furling a jib or mainsail with a winch handle in rough conditions can be a difficult and dangerous operation. The manual winch handle system for jib furlers is located on the side of the furling unit on the bow, and on the front of the mast for mainsail furlers. Both are difficult areas for manual furling in rough conditions. Facnor has solved this problem with a continuous line drive system fitted with a standard winch handle attachment that offers a safer and more powerful emergency system. As with most Facnor continuous line systems, the operation is safe. Once in place the furling can be done by pulling on the continuous line system from over one meter away. Our experience in designing endless line furlers guarantees the reliability of this emergency system. The Facnor emergency system fits on electric/hydraulic furlers and enables a quick and safe operation in case of engine failure. Emergency sail handling on the fore-deck in bad weather can be very hazardous. The Facnor system allows for controllable and safe back-up operations in worst conditions.safe handling... The proximity of the pulpit may block the handling of a traditional crank of help (photo opposite). The Facnor system makes it possible to furl in any circumstances TECHNICAL FEATURES Corrosion proof Main components made of anodised aluminium and stainless steel Auto-locking fitting on to the furling unit Adaptable on any standard model of electric/hydraulic furlers Constant torque when furling Headsail and mainsail easily and quickly furled in case of engine failure Shorter than a winch handle 12 mm diameter line and protection bag included in delivery. EXAMPLE FOR INSTALLATION Safe and efficient handling: This Facnor continuous line emergency system is used instead of any winch handle and fits into the emergency mechanism of the furling unit (see picture against). As any efficient handle, the Facnor emergency system has a square fitting that automatically locks the system into the furling unit while operating. Easy to use : stand 1 meter behind the furling unit and pull the endless furling line to furl the sail. Standing 1 meter away from the jib furler in stormy conditions is safer than directly over the bow of the boat. & O p t i o n s photo credit : HINCKLEY 42 DS Phil Bennett Under-deck solution / 27

These performance sections ensure a torque resistance even under high loads. SWIVELS The swivels feature the same quality as the swivel delivered with the RC racing range. They are fitted with bearing box (see page 12 & 13). USE OF THE EXISTING FORESTAY The hollow inside of the motorised device allows fitting the existing forestay (even with a turnbuckle bottom terminal). If necessary, it is possible to install the furling gear with the forestay fixed on the mast head. You only need to remove the bottom fixation pin of the forestay (in some cases, you may need to add extra accessories at the bottom of the forestay, see drawing below). PRODUCT REPORT Dick Johansson, Skipper of a Swan / photo credit : CONRAD / Conrad 66 After investigating the market for a electric furling system suiting the size of a 76 footer, I decided that Facnor was the unit to go for. And I have not been dissapointed. The assembly of the system was quite easy, when following the instructions carefully. All the fittings are very exact and all the joiningparts fits very well together. The wiring was quite an easy operation. I have in/out pushbuttons on each side of the cockpit coming close to the primary-winches, and that makes it very easy to operate the furler and sheet at the same time depending what tack you are on. I have sailed 2500miles this summer and the system has been working perfectly all the time. I can strongly recommend Facnor to any boatowner who wants a reliable furling system.

For this reason Facnor Team designs products with the purpose of simplifying sail reefing. The lattest example is the huge French racing trimaran, Groupama III (100'), for which Facnor provided very specific and innovative furlers. Using this particular experience Facnor has developed the new FX range of Gennaker furlers. With this new furling equipment handling flying sails becomes easy in either racing or cruising. 29 N E W F X C O D E 0 & The Facnor Fx furler has been designed to easily furl your Gennaker or Code 0. Moreover, our design team has developed unique innovations in order to safely and quickly install the furler. The sail head and tack are seized to thimbles. These are fixed to the swivel and the drum with quick-release pins. Quick and easy to fit & Easy performance Like the structural furler, the Code zero & Gennaker furler is an in/out system that does not allow reefing of the sail. The anti-twist rope is captive within the sail luff tape. The sail head and tack are seized to thimbles. These are fixed to the swivel and the drum with quick-release pins. The advantage is the quick installation. The furled sail can quickly be stored after use. With the Code zero & Gennaker furler, no more knots with the Spinnaker around the forestay: in light wind the Code zero & Gennaker can be quickly hoisted and unfurled. This is perfect when you are sailing before the wind: with Facnor the performance is worry free. 31 F X T S T A N D A R D & Use conditions: The use range of the sails as shown on the diagram against varies with the force of the wind. We can mainly bear in mind that the FX furlers are better adapted for use with flying headsails between beam and broad reach (i.e. Code Zero and Gennaker). The complementary use with closer reach headsails is possible, however, under certain conditions. Please contact the closest Facnor agent for further advices. Installation of the Code zero & Gennaker furler: the short sequence above shows how easily the Gennaker furler is installed (here on a Fabulo Open 35). The FX code zero and gennaker furlers are designed with an open jaw to transmit the twist of the luff rope. Aluminum thimbles Luff ropes finished with Facnor lightweight aluminum thimbles fit the exact inside dimension of the jaw on the furler for a clean finish at the tack and head. The thimble and luff rope quickly transfer the furling action from the drum to the luff for tight and even furling. 35 A S Y M M E T R I C The Asym-Fx allows to furl in the asymmetric Spinnakers from the cockpit by pulling the bottom furling line. The anti-twist rope rotates up to the top end. The central line connecting the sail luff and the torque rope by the middle starts furling in. Unlike the Gennaker (Code Zero), the torque rope is not captive from the luff tape. The drum continuous furling line prevents from overriding and can be left fitted on deck or easily removed. Therefore, the furled sail is quickly ready to be used. There are many advantages to the Asym-Fx furler. First, in most cases the standard modification is to add a fourth point in the middle of the luff. Secondly, unlike what people think the loads supported by the sail when furling in (by the middle) are relatively weak. Thirdly, if we look at the headsail use range, one single mechanism can be finally used to furl the staysail, the Gennaker/Code zero and the asymmetric Spinnaker. Yann Zedda 38 /

39 4 W I R E F U R L E R F O R Facnor adapted the racing structural furler developed for ocean Open 60 to 24 to 33 ft sailing boats. These furlers are in/out systems for Solent or small Genoa. They give the possibility of hoisting quickly a sail fitted with hanks as on any conventional forestay. This system is especially suitable for racing yachts. IN/OUT SYSTEMS Unlike the headsail furling and reefing system, but like the Gennaker furler, the structural wire furler does not allow reefing of the sail. It is an in/out system. The sail set on structural wire furler can be fitted with hanks or zip luff. The furling principle is simple: the continuous line drum transfers the rotation to the tack of the sail that furls round the forestay. After a few turns, the rotation is quickly transferred to the top of the sail. With the halyard swivel the sail can be quickly hoisted and lowered the sail as requested. MAXIMUM LUFF & LIGHTNESS The structural wire furler offers the same advantages as the continuous line drum: a constant furling power, a maximum luff thanks to the low profile drum that keeps the jib tack low. Extra feature: the saving in weight compared to a classic drum is around 10kg less than a conventional furling system. Ideal for racing boats! 47 C F M A I N S A I L F U R L I N G & Sailing differently but safely: the Facnor mainsail furling system makes your sailing safe and comfortable. No more effort to reef the sail in choppy seas: by a simple handling, you will always have the right surface of sail adapted to the wind conditions. No more hard job of folding or flaking the sail: by a simple handling, your mainsail is quickly furled or unfurled. Your boat will always be ready to leave with sails already set up. SIMPLICITY IN INSTALLATION Simplicity in the design: The principle of the Compact F (CF) system matches the Facnor moto: simplicity reliability innovation. Thanks to this product policy Facnor is placed as leader of furling system manufacturers. The CF principle: a furling system that for a headsail turns inside housing sections. The drive unit of the sections is situated just above the goose neck and is operated with a continuous furling line (Facnor patent). Simplicity of installation, strong fixing: The housing sections are fixed with slugs alongside the mast (drilling not necessary). The drive unit is easy to install and does NOT REQUIRE ANY MODIFICATION TO THE GOOSENECK. This kit is suitable for most type of mast and is quickly fitted without unstepping the mast. The CF mainsail furling system is produced using high tech means that result in a excellent quality/price ratio MAINSAIL WITHOUT BATTENS Mainsail to be made to measure from suitable dacron or laminate materials to support storage when furled DRIVE UNIT The furling sections turns by operating the drive unit with a continuous line system. The drive unit is fitted with two sets of stainless steel ball bearings and fixed to the mast above the goose neck with slugs. PLEASE NOTE: The system does not interfere with the goose neck, therefore, no modification is necessary. 48/ F A C N O R : S A I L I N G

Photo Credit : Philippe Mayoussier FACNOR ADVANTAGES HOUSING SECTIONS The housing sections (1,7 meter long) are fixed with slugs to the mast without modification. Safe handling of the mainsail Simple to use Installation without modifying or drilling the mast This system allows keeping the original goose neck BOTTOM SECTION DESIGN The section design prevents damaging the sail. The edges of the housing section incorporate a round groove so that a spare sail or protection strip can be hoisted. BOOM EQUIPMENT The mainsail furling system includes a boom kit that allows perfect positioning of the clew. There are two versions available: -standard kit (ref. RC): includes a ball bearing car and track (fixed onto the boom with slugs inserted into the groove like the housing section); -special kit (ref. KB): avoids to use the existing boom sheaves that are not really suitable because of their small diameter. The sheaves supplied are fitted with needle bearing substantially reducing friction (see next page). E F F O R T L E S S L Y / 49

The housing sections and the slugs are fixed together by stainless steel screws and Nylock nuts. All housing sections are predrilled and no modification has to be done on your mast. PRODUCT REPORT Manos Karatarkatis, Owner of a Sun Kiss 47 (Greece) Fours years ago, I decided to change my mainsail to handle it more easily and to be safe when sailing. After some research, my choice came down to the FACNOR mainsail furler. I looked at the boom furlers, but first the prices were high and people did not seem very confident in these products. Now I can tell you that I'm very satisfied with the Facnor mainsail furler which I have on my Sun Kiss 47. This system makes sailing trips easier with my wife and I'm sailing with more confidence and safety. I will advise everybody who want to sail easily and safely to choose the Facnor mainsail furler. HOUSING AND FURLING SECTIONS These sections are made of extruded aluminium and anodised after machining. They combine resistance and lightness. The furling sections are twin groove.the standard length of the housing section is 1.70 meter in order to lower freight cost. BOOM KITS: standard and special -standard version: track on which a ball bearing car is fitted with a shackle (fig. 1) -special version: track on which slides a ball bearing car is fitted with a pivoting sheave (fig. 2); includes two needle bearing sheaves (fig 1) Photo Credit : Meltemi (fig 2) 50 /
