We recently had the first of our Ladies Helm Twilights (sponsored by Everett Brookes Jewellers in Gawler Place), and those who competed can attest that we had wonderful conditions and a most enjoyable race. 25 skippers handed over the helm to those of the fairer sex for the night and once again this stand-alone race was well-received. Congratulations to Tracey Pegler who once again showed that a serious competitive streak lurks beneath that open friendly demeanour. The Racing Association has become aware that a number of people have been crewing on racing yachts with no documentation. For many reasons REX needs to be diligent about this issue and it s simply unfair on the majority of those who are paid up members if a minority can use the club as their own with no financial outlay. We believe that the current membership structure offers a large degree of flexibility including the option to apply for an exemption on grounds of hardship. We would ask that all skippers bear in mind and check personally with crew members as to their status. Essentially if someone has been a YA member (ie has a YA number from ANY club) they are required to pay the casual race fee for each attendance at the club. If a person has never been a YA member (no YA number) they are entitled to race three times as an introduction after which the casual fee will apply. All funds received from a casual member can be converted towards a full membership at any time within a racing season so essentially the casual membership system can be used as an instalment payment type system which seems to work for many. It has also come to the attention of REX this past month that some members aboard racing yachts can t wait to get back to the dock and find the men s room. A neighbour has now lodged a number of complaints about the men who seem to enjoy using the marina as their toilet and it certainly doesn t reflect well on the club so please respect the wishes of our neighbours and do your business outside the heads or wait a little longer and walk up the ramp. We hope not to receive any further reports regarding CYCSA boat crews. A note of thanks to Dorian and his catering staff for the quality of meals on Twilight nights. 2 2 FROM THE RACE OFFICE Wishing all of our Racing Members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy 2013! I can t believe I am writing my Christmas column once again - how this year has flown... The first half of our racing season for is down, only another couple of months packed full of great racing to go! We have the Adelaide to Lincoln Race (and Lincoln Week), the Great Southern Regatta, the Vicsail Beneteau Regatta and the J24 State Championships to look forward to in Once again this season we have been fortunate to have some sensational days out on the water... Of course, our race days wouldn t go ahead without our dedicated volunteers. A huge thank you to our hard working Race Officers and Duty Crew for all the experience they bring, and the time they give us. The Racing Association has once again been blessed with some fantastic sponsorship support this season. So far we have had Sportsmed.SA on board to sponsor our Premier s Cup Regatta, and EverettBrookes Custom Jewellery come back for a second year running to sponsor our Ladies Helm Twilight Race on the 12 December, which was a great night at the Club with their jewellery showcase. New addition, Prescott Securities has jumped on board to sponsor both of our Standalone Sternchaser Twilight races this year. We are lucky to have such great support from our members and local community - all in addition to our wonderful season sponsors Phil Hoffmann Travel, Yalumba, Penfolds, MUSTO, Canegrass Saltbush Lamb, The Stag Hotel and Robert Oatley Vineyards. Now, onto a slightly more serious issue, it has come to my attention this season that there are many boats on the water with unfinancial crew. I draw your attention to CYCSA SI , 2.9: All crew shall be a member of the CYCSA Racing Association. Details of the various membership options are available on the CYCSA website...any boat failing to observe this rule may be subject to protest... This rule does not apply to Twilight Races. Skippers, please take note that the Racing Executive will be enforcing this rule in If you have any questions about the membership structure, please contact me for more information. 4 4 IRC NEWS WITH WILLIAM STRANGWAYS During the last 6 weeks, I have been busy measuring with Asylum, Enchantress and Two True, all having last minute changes to their IRC certificates in time for the 2012 Sydney to Hobart. Our local club racing, both inshore and offshore has lifted in intensity as training for the great challenge ahead. Peer Gynt has also been in the hunt to optimise their rating. Black Label (name to be changed to Concubine) will soon be a threat to all in the IRC divisions. The wonder yacht Victoire is rumoured to be joining the CYCSA in the near future... It was great to see Another Planet take out Race 6 in our Inshore IRC series, proving that if you sail well, it IS possible beat Two True. 5 5 SPORTSMED.SA PREMIER S CUP REGATTA The 2012 event was held in perfect sunny conditions and generally well supported with 34 entries overall (CYCSA 18 RSAYS 7 PASC 9). Integrated into this Regatta were races for the IRC state champs and the inaugural Sports Boats SA State Championship. We would usually run the Southern Cross Cup for the J24s in conjunction with this event, but due to only 4 yachts nominated this year it was cancelled. On a positive note, we welcomed Jason Ward s Black Label (a Beneteau first 40 similar to Two True) to the CYCSA. The yacht only arrived at 8:00 on Saturday morning from the delivery trip from QLD, quick preparation and into their first race at It was great to see them doing so well in race 1. Saturday 17 th November 1315 Race 1: 2 laps W/L 10 knots from SSW. Division 1: 1.6miles, Div 2: 1.2 miles. With a steady breeze and not much tide running the yachts spread out looking for any advantage they could find in the minor wind shifts. The breeze began to build during the last leg to around 15 knots. The division 1 fleet elapsed time ranges between 74 & 93 minutes. Division 2 ranged between 62 & 87 minutes. Race 2 started at laps W/L: 15knts from SSW. Div 1: 2 miles, Div 2: 1.6miles. Once again a fairly steady breeze in direction but increasing in strength. With the increase in tidal movement stbd tack heading inshore was the favoured way to go so groups of yachts trying to outpoint each other was a feature of the windward legs. Black Label withdrew due to a faulty stbd jib sheet block. Downwind legs were exciting with the breeze around 20knts and gusting a bit more. The course was well laid so yachts had to gybe providing some spectacular action on the water. Division 1 elapsed time from minutes. Divisions minutes. Although the course was longer than race 1 not much difference in the elapsed times due to the increased wind speed. After racing the REX ran a BBQ (cooked on the PASC portable BBQ kindly lent to us for the evening), which was a great success serving approx 100 meals. Good friendly atmosphere with live entertainment also provided. Sunday 18 th long race, midday start. 9knts from 210. Race Officer John Gibson set a good course for all divisions. Div 1: Hard on to a mark 4.5 miles 180 (S) reach/run to no1 beacon (S), to wreck buoy (P) then a dead run to the finish. Approx 16 miles. Div 2: same first leg then reach to wreck buoy (S) then run to lead out (S) back to wreck buoy (P) the dead run to finish. Div 3: same first leg then reach to wreck buoy (S) then dead run to finish. With the wind at only 9 knots at the start there were some thoughts on CYC1 that the course may have to be shortened, however the weather gods looked after the fleet with an increase in breeze to knots just 30 minutes into the race. Dr Feelgood in div 2 rounded the first mark at At around 1300 the breeze increased again to 15 knots from 220, which gave the fleet a lovely reach out to the wreck buoy and no1 beacon, followed by some windward work back to the wreck buoy and a great dead downwind run to the finish. The first boat across the line was Hawkes Nest (PASC) who took out the div 3 race on the day. First over the line in div 1 was Aikin, div 2 was Dr Feelgood, Sportsboats was Troppo. Elapsed times div minutes, div minutes. Interesting to see the effect of the wind increase on the reach/run legs. 7 7 EL FIDELDO GOES TO SYDNEY - DOUG WATSON We have been sailing J24s at the CYCSA for a couple of seasons now and after competing against interstate boats for the fist time at the Nationals last March and the Victorian states in April, we were keen to have another crack at the top end of the Australian fleet. The next opportunity that presented itself, was the New South Wales State titles which were held at the beginning of November in Sydney Harbour. After considerable time and effort to get JJF back up to racing trim, we had been tempted when Jamie Goode upgraded to a Farr 30 and Vertigo came on the market. The lure of a younger/ lighter boat built at the height of Ian Bashford s class rule stretching was just too much. We took the boat off his hands and re-christened her El Fidledo. The name for those who are not aware (I am fairly sure that s all of you) comes from a cartoon, which was published in a Scottish News paper in the 1950s. It was the name of the trusty 2 legged horse, ridden by the Scottish Sheriff of a Wild West town. As far as crew was concerned, we had our usual middleman George Bird-Jones, a recent temporary migrant from Wales and mastman and token South Australian Jason Edson signed up from the outset. Unfortunately none of our harem of European ladies (Aude, Vanesa or Anna) were available. We managed to find a stray Irishman Francis McDonnel to come and join us. We still had room for one other small person to make our maximum crew weight but with all avenues exhausted we had to make do with 4 and hope it wasn t going to be too windy. So, sounding a little like the start of a bad joke, a Scotsman, a Welshman, an Irishman and an Australian set off to tow a J24 to Sydney. Jason was indispensible with his local knowledge ensuring that the best pies were sampled at all the truck stops on the way helping with our short term weight gain program of 12.5kg per person in 48hrs prior to the crew weigh-in in Sydney. He also offered excellent advice on exactly the right way to hit Kangaroos with a Land Cruiser to ensure minimal damage to boat and vehicle (you don t want to hit them when they are in the air apparently!). We left at around 4pm on the Thursday afternoon with the intention of driving straight through the night and after a largely uneventful trip, apart from a couple of close encounters with seemingly suicidal marsupials, we pulled up at the RAN Sailing Association in Rushcutters Bay before midday on the Friday ready to rig and launch the boat. As far as location is concerned, this exclusive little club has got to be right up there with the best in the world. 10 minutes from the CBD, its own private beach, and fantastic views out over the harbour. We weighed in, still around 50kg light, but very proud of everyone s recent pie loading efforts and were all set for 6 very tight races over the next two days. With boat rigged and ready to go we headed round to the host club, the Royal Prince Edward on Point Piper. As far as location is concerned, this exclusive little club has got to be right up there with the best in the world. 10 minutes from the CBD, its own private beach, and fantastic views out over the harbour. We weighed in, still around 50kg light, but very proud of everyone s recent pie loading efforts and were all set for 6 very tight races over the next two days. Saturday morning arrived with next to no wind on the harbour but around 10 knts forecast for the afternoon. We hung around until around lunchtime before finally getting out on the water as the breeze started to fill in. The first race was started in a very patchy 5-6 knots, with a course laid almost directly across the harbour. Having heard all the stories about how busy Sydney Harbour is on a Saturday afternoon, we should not have been surprised by the amount of traffic around but the number of sailing boats trying to race in the one small patch of water while avoiding ferries and motor boats which were crisscrossing the course every couple of minutes was like nothing us out of towners had experienced before. With Francis charged with lookout duties we were set for the first race of the series.

8 8 EL FIDELDO GOES TO SYDNEY - DOUG WATSON After a reasonable start, Francis keen eyesight served us particularly well as his early spotting of a fast approaching ferry allowed us to get to a patch of breeze behind it that the rest of the fleet had to tack away from. As a result we managed to pop out with a healthy lead at the first mark. We managed to hang onto this down the run however on the next beat, the two closest chasing boats split to either corner of the course and as we tried to herd them back together they gradually closed the gap. We came round the last mark with a much reduced lead and unfortunately trying to defend two attacking boats down the last run proved a little too much and we dropped to 2 nd by about a quarter of a boat length. The first 3 boats all finished within a couple of seconds. A little disappointing to loose the lead, however a more than acceptable result in the first race and confirmation that the new boat, now lovingly referred to as Elfie, was very much on pace with the other guys. The second race started in slightly stronger and more stable conditions with the local boats all heading hard for the left hand side of the first beat. Again we had a reasonable start but not picking the right side of the beat cost us a bit and we struggled to break away from the main pack. We did manage to hang on for a 5 th place, which may not have been as good as we felt we were capable of, but was by no means a disaster. We finished the day with the top 4 boats all within a couple of points of each other. As any top sports person will agree, it is vital to relax after a day s competition. We perhaps managed this a little too well as we sampled the local hostelries of Double Bay. When Sunday morning arrived, we all woke up with a level of thirst that was particularly surprising given the extensive fluid replacement program we had undergone the night before. Again the breeze was almost non-existent in the morning and our first race on Sunday was held around midday in very similar conditions to Saturday. A just OK start saw us round the top mark in around fifth place but with some hard work down wind we had gained a place or two. On the second beat we came into our own and fought our way through to the front of the fleet and managed to extend a little on the run to the finish to win the race. With 3 races completed we were holding a 1 st, 2 nd and 5 th and very happy with our progress to date. At this point a couple of things happened, the breeze started to pick up and we began to suffer a little for being underweight and I seemingly lost the ability to be on the right side of the start line! An OCS in the 4 th race meant we struggled to fight back to a 10 th Place on a very one-sided course. The fifth race was a little better with us reaching the 1 st mark in 2 nd but a slight lack of speed and a couple of tactical errors saw us fallback to 5 th by the finish. So one last race to prove our point and secure a top 3 place. We went one better here, firstly by trying to start 1 minute late and secondly (I m not sure how) being called OCS again. This time we managed to get back to 9 th but it was a disappointing end to the regatta. We had however secured 4 th place, managed to split the 4 previous national champions who were completing and had a fantastic weekend s sailing. With the boat de rigged and on the trailer by 7pm we set off on the trip back to North Haven. Again we travelled non-stop through the night and were home by 3pm on the Monday. All in all a great weekend and we learned a number of things as a result: 1. The boat seems to be absolutely on the pace, 2. You need to turn up as close to the maximum weight limit as possible, 3. Three consecutive nights of minimal sleep and alcohol intake do not have a positive effect on ones performance! We can hopefully put these lessons learned to good use at the Nationals in Melbourne in January.

9 9 LADIES HELM HELM TWILIGHT TWILIGHT RACE RACE Wednesday the 12th of December saw the first Ladies Helm twilight race for Season It was a HOT day, hitting 38, with a thundersorm thrown in just to make it even more humid and unbearable! It was a pleasure to have the opportunity go out and helm G-Wizz for the evening and experience the lovely cool sea breezes - much nicer than sitting in the office! We had a great fleet of 25 boats skippered by lovely ladies on the water. Therese and Larry from Yalumaba had a great night out on Rapid 1, and Carolyn & Sue from our special Race Day Sponsors EverettBrookes Custom Jewellery & Watches had their first ever sail on G-Wizz and loved it! Mike and David from EverettBrookes also attended the evening, but stayed at the Club to keep a watchful eye over their stunning jewellery display. It was fantastic to have a packed patio after the race for the presentation. Congratulations to the winners on the night! Our next Ladies Helm Twilight race will be on the 20th March Don t miss out! 10 10 RACING ASSOCIATION SPONSOR BALLAST HEAD CUP - NEW YEARS DAY 2012 Anticipating withdrawal symptoms with no Club sailing between December and January? Looking to switch on the fridge and pump up the head over the holiday period? If so, cruise down to Island Beach, adjacent to American River on Kangaroo Island and join in the fun of the annual non-spinnaker Ballast Head Cup on New Year s Day. Start with a genuine Sydney to Hobart sound signal! Twice around the course for about one and a half to two hours then onto the beach for prize giving, barbeque and drinks. This is the first organised sailing event internationally each year, so be part of history! 11 11 SA SPORTS BOATS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - Sam Gaylard The Premiers Cup was the setting for the first leg of the South Australian Sportsboat State Championships, which for the first time is being run under the Sportsboat Measurement System (SMS) handicap system. A total of 5 boats nominated for the event with different types of sportsboats ranging from the small and light Eagle 650, the one design Elliott 7, its bigger brother an Elliott 780 and two Lyons 750's. The racing in the first race was close at the front between the Eagle 650 Hot Gossip (RSAYS) sailed by Stuart Schimeld, and the Elliott 780 "Troppo" (PASC) sailed by Sam Gaylard with Troppo taking line honours but Hot Gossip winning under SMS by less than a minute. Third place went to the Lyons 750 "Touch N Go" (PASC). sailed by Geoff Price and crew. R1-17 NOV 2012 HOT GOSSIP - STUART SHIMELD TROPPO - SAM GAYLARD TOUCH N GO - GEOFF PRICE The second race of the day saw the breeze steadily increase up to 20 knots and again Troppo led the fleet to the top mark, but after setting the kite, broke its backstay retiring the kite to the bag for the rest of the race. Hot Gossip was able to sail through and lead the race around the course to finish first by a whopping 6 minutes from Troppo, and third over the line was Touch n Go. SMS results showed a huge win to Hot Gossip, with the E7 Buoystoys (PASC) sailed by Nick Rench placing second and Troppo third. Unfortunately Touch N Go had a big broach under spinnaker resulting in the top 6" of its mast breaking resulting in some interesting problems getting the sails down and back to the club safely. On the Sunday the long race was sailed in perfect conditions but had only 3 starters due to gear breakages and other commitments for some sailors. Troppo lead to the turning mark off the coast at Point Malcolm followed by Hot Gossip and a revived Mighty Fine Lyons (Bill van Riet, PASC) nipping at their heels after some rig modifications throughout the night finding some extra speed. The two sail reach option was favoured by all three boats to pick the right angle to drop down to the Wreck buoy under kite. It was Mighty Fine Lyons who picked this angle the best sneaking underneath Hot Gossip and Troppo who had over run the optimal angle. The two bigger boats were able to move out from Hot Gossip under the kites and at the bottom mark both boats went around within a boat length of each other, but had opened up a small lead over Hot Gossip. The upwind leg showed some fantastic sailing from Stu and crew on Hot Gossip who, despite their short waterline length, slowly picked back up time and passed Mighty Fine Lyons and turned around the buoy only a few boat lengths behind Troppo. These two boats picked different sides of the course with Hot Gossip taking the inshore and Troppo seeking more breeze out to sea. It was going to be a very close finish with both boats running down to the finish at knots of boat speed. The offshore side of the course chosen by Troppo resulted in her being on starboard for the run into the finish line which ended in a hail of starboard! as both boats converged on the finish line with Hot Gossip taking the stern of Troppo to miss out on line honours by a mere 2 seconds. Under SMS it was Hot Gossip again taking the win from Troppo and Mighty Fine Lyons in third. Series results after 3 races (of 6) show Hot Gossip with a dominant lead from Troppo and Mighty Fine Lyons. The last 3 races of the State Championships will be sailed as a part of the Great Southern Regatta in April. The sportsboat fleet would welcome any other sportsboats to join in the racing and if anyone wants to get their sportsboat racing under SMS in SA please contact Sam Gaylard on or through the Port Adelaide Sailing Club. 13 13 WILD OATS QUEEN OF THE GULF REGATTA The Queen of the Gulf Regatta, proudly sponsored by the Robert Oatley Vinyards wine brand, Wild Oats was raced on the 8the December There was a relatively small fleet of 19 boats for this year s regatta, but is was a good day on the water regardless. 14 14 JUBILEE CUP OFFSHORE RACE Saturday the 1 st of December saw the addition of a new 125 nautical mile off shore race to the state IRC and CYCSA off shore race program. This particular race distance and course was developed by RSAYS & REX in response to the views of some of the boats and crews competing in the offshore series in previous years that the program was dominated by traditional short 60 mile offshore races that in the era of fast modern racing yachts were no more than a long inshore or coastal race. It was felt that boats preparing for the Sydney to Hobart in particular would benefit from another extended offshore event prior to departing for Sydney and out of this the concept of the Wirrina/Hobart Wreck Buoy race was developed. Some members may be aware that traditionally the Haystack Island race and the Neptune Island race were held prior to Christmas each year to give crews real offshore and ocean experience prior to contesting the Sydney to Hobart. The Neptune Island race is a category 2 race and would require participating boats to significantly upgrade safety standards and carry a life raft. This would obviously have limited appeal to the majority of boats from both Clubs. The course for this inaugural event was North Haven south of the channel to the Hobart Wreck Buoy leaving the exclusion zone to starboard (a virtual mark in so much as the perimeter buoys marking the exclusion zones around the wreck are not in place), Tapley s Shoal to starboard then on to Long Spit to starboard and back to the Outer Harbour finish. The 1300 start saw 9 boats [6 CYCSA & 3 RSAYS) head off in a knot south westerly s and a big incoming tide. Two True got away at the favoured end of the line but in the lighter breezes early in the race was soon passed by Vulcan and Shining Sea who had good boat speed and good position on the race course the whole way round. The predicted south easterly shift off the land further south did not occur and this meant a long starboard tack laying the Wreck Buoy with minimal difficulty. The breeze steadily built throughout the afternoon seeing as much as 27 knots for brief periods off Port Noarlunga into late afternoon. Vulcan was first around the virtual Hobart Wreck Buoy followed in close company by Two True and Shining Sea who were boat on boat at this mark. Shining Sea made the best of navigating the rounding by GPS while Two True searched in vain for the designated perimeter markers on the water. The leg to Tapley s Shoal had Two True making good gains under full main and a jib topper and we rounded Tapley s Shoal a couple of boat lengths ahead of Vulcan at exactly 23:35 with the S4 spinnaker being hoisted as we posted our radio sched. Shining Sea was a few minutes behind us. The leg to Long Spit saw Two True average speeds of around 10 knots for a stable but fast ride in conditions which stayed in at knots. Shining Sea did the best of this leg and was only three boat lengths behind as we dropped spinnakers and hoisted jib toppers for the leg back to Outer Harbour. Shining Sea jumped out from the mark on the inside windward track and looked to be getting away from Two True at the start of this final leg. We hoisted our hounds code zero, dropped the JT and powered away at a half knot or more faster than Shining Sea for the residual of the leg home. Two True finished just a few minutes prior to 5:00am in a breeze that was just starting to moderate and shift slowly into the south east. Shining Sea and Vulcan finished just after 5:00am and the remainder of the fleet further back again. From Two True s perspective an interesting race that should stay on the program. A more traditional summer weather pattern would have seen the breeze shift to the left and into the southeast and even the east by evening. This would have made for an even more interesting upwind leg to the Wreck Buoy with boats having to choose between an inshore track with potential lift off the hills around Normanville and Second Valley versus staying out to sea with a more even gradient breeze. It was not to be in this race but nonetheless overall well done to REX on listening to crews and members and putting this course on the program. With a bit more discussion and definition around a real buoy or a virtual buoy at the wreck of the Hobart this race should remain a regular feature.
