The bad news is if you do not already have your Red Book that means you missed a great event at the Eastport Yacht Club on April 2nd. The short of it is, we had a nice breakfast, very interesting guest speakers (Annapolis to Newport race preparations), 2015 Cruising Awards, installation of officers and best of all, we had a chance to catch up with each other after the long winter season. We are so very fortunate that all of our staff and officers have committed to serve again for the 2016 sailing season. Again, we would ask everyone to consider serving on our staff in some capacity. Our entire organization benefits from new members with new ideas and a different view of our operations. So, please think of coming forward to help by serving as a staff member or an officer later this year when our elections take place. 1

2 We are pleased to see some new faces this year. There are several new members for Junior Training and a couple for the racing division. During this year alone, we have lost several members who have moved out of the Maryland area for various reasons. In an effort to increase our membership,we will be distributing a new membership flyer. The flyer gives a quick overview of MRSA and its benefits with some contact information. Our plan is to include a few flyers with the next "Day Mark" to everyone. Please share these flyers with a friend or neighbor who might be interested in joining MRSA. We will also be ing everyone a pdf document of the flyer so you may pass it on to interested parties in a digital format. When you receive your Red Book, please take a few minutes to review our upcoming events in the Social Schedule, the Cruising Schedule, the Wednesday Night Racing Schedule, the Bay Racing Schedule and the Junior Training information. The Junior Training Program has been filled with 40 students and has a waitlist of 10 students. In addition, the age and condition of the Junior Training fleet required that all sails for the entire fleet be replaced and should be ready to go by mid-june. In all, the 2016 sailing season can be a very busy year, but only if you participate. There is an activity for everyone at any age. So, keep moving and don't give the barnacles of life a chance to accumulate. See you out on the water or at one of our socials. Thank you, Dave Pirone, Commodore, MRSA Wrap-Up Spring Brunch The annual Spring Brunch was held at Eastport Yacht Club on Saturday morning, April 2 nd. Approximately 40 people attended including two new members and enjoyed Bloody Marys, Mimosas, omelet and a wonderful view of Annapolis, the Severn River, and the Chesapeake Bay. Sailmaker, Will Keyworth, and Annapolis Yacht Club member, Jim Paley, gave a talk on the Annapolis to Newport Race--what the race is like, necessary preparations, and needed safety equipment and sail inventory. The race is a great introduction to ocean racing since boats are always quite near one another and never too far offshore to seek shelter if really bad weather blows up. Commodore Dave Pirone introduced the MRSA officers for 2016 and gave them their respective burgees. Fleet captain cruising, Norm Poulsen, then named the winners of the Cruising Award and the Top Cruise Leader award for The cruising awards for the top two places was hotly contested by three boats--ravenous (Peggy and Ed Poe), Frequent Flyer (Loura and Mike Bonham), and Min Van IV (Debbie and John Lund) who all did a horizon job on the rest of the club. In the end, Ravenous took first place and Min Van IV (winner for the last 6 years!) took second. It was noted that Ed Poe, racing in the Wednesday night series, also took the Magothy Cup for best scoring boat for the 2015 year, making him both the best racer and the best cruiser in MRSA! The award for Top Cruise Leader was a tie between Min Van IV and Fantastic (Toni and Rich Hughes). Thanks to everyone for a great cruising year, and we all look forward to an even better one in Eastport Yacht Club was a really nice place to meet for breakfast and to meet new MRSA members. It was great to be out on a chilly, rainy spring morning. It was fun to greet our MRSA friends after what seemed like a long winter. (Will it ever be over? Will spring ever warm up?) 2

3 New Members of MRSA It was fun to get to know two new members of MRSA. Sisters Alex Meyer and Kristin Dempsey, nieces of Mike Manusak (long-time MRSA racer) attended our annual breakfast. Alex Meyer was representing the Meyer family (husband Jason held the fort at home or maybe had National Guard duty that day.) Alex and Jason and son, Ethan, age 10, live in Pasadena. Ethan will be attending Junior Training this year. Kristin represented the Dempsey's while Bobby flew for Southwest or the Navy. The Dempseys have two boys-- Blake, age 12, and Grant, age 10. Both of the boys are registered for MRSA Junior Training. The Dempsey's bought Myron and Sigi Dorf s house in Mil Bur Community. We are so glad to have both of these families join MRSA and happy to have the boys attend Junior Training this year! Please welcome the Meyer's and the Dempsey's to MRSA! Future Events SOCK BURNING CRUISE YO MATIES... MRSA announces its First Cruise of the 2015 Season! A head count would be very helpful for provision planning, so please RSVP, see below! The spring equinox has passed, calibrate your compass, bring family, friends and potential new members, shed your SOCKS and join in the fun. Come by water or land! WHAT: SOCK BURNING CRUISE WHEN: Saturday, May 7, 2016, beginning at 3:30 pm - Until? WHERE: Eddy Looper's Beach on Broad Creek off of the Magothy River (private property). LAND LUBBERS: Approximately the 200 block of Eagle Hill Road, Pasadena, Maryland DIRECTIONS: From Mountain Road, turn onto North Shore Drive take the first Y to the right, Eagle Hill Road, watch for the MRSA sign, turn left, follow the field dirt road down the hill to the beach. SEAFARERS: Approximately 39* 5' 8" N 76* 28' 59" W. Follow navigational aids or obtain local knowledge. Follow the Magothy River to Broad Creek located between Park Point and Rock Point. Looper Beach will be on your port side about half way into the creek. Look for fire burning on shore. Eddy has a sturdy mooring ball that can handle a number of vessels. Eddy also has a small boat if needed as a water taxi. WHY: To celebrate the official start of the MRSA boating season. HOW: By burning socks, sharing food, beverages and tall tales with fellow mariners. 3

4 PRIZES: There will be three prize winners: A. Most Tasty Dish to pass. B. Most unusual/unique socks to burn. C. Best Sea Story (under 3 minutes). WHAT TO BRING: A dish to pass [w/serving utensils (pot luck) ], you could be a prize winner with your dish! Appetizers, Salads and Desserts needed. Socks to burn, unique socks might win a prize! Great sea tales under three minutes shared, prize winning event. TO BE FURNISHED: Hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, ketchup, mustard, relish. Ingredients for S'MORES graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate. Beverages: Bottled water, Pepsi, Diet Coke, red wine, white wine, Michelob Ultra, Yuengling Lager. Paper plates, eating utensils, napkins, red cups. Fantastic ambiance, camp fire, Broad Creek Looper Beach with peaceful views and fun times. Blue Angels Cruise May 24th Can May really be just a hop, skip and jump away? Will we really have the boats ready to go? All of these questions and more swirl through the sailors minds. One thing is sure! The Blue Angels will be flying for graduation exercises at the Naval Academy, and the Blue Angels practice is Tuesday, May 24 th. Captain Ed Poe will take Ravenous, and you can go along for the ride to watch (and hear) the spectacle of the Blue Angels' show. Don t miss this event. It is fun and spectacular. Bring your lunch and your camera. Ed will have beverages on Ravenous. The plan is to leave the pier at the Shore Shack by 10:30 am and return no later than 4:30 pm. Racing Corner Hailing All Sailors: This year for the MRSA Wednesday Night Series, we will have a start (the last in the sequence) for cruising type keelboats.

5 Racing Corner Hailing All Sailors: This year for the MRSA Wednesday Night Series, we will have a start (the last in the sequence) for cruising type keelboats. This will be an organized sail around the buoys in the Magothy for the fun of it. It may give you the chance to skip out of work early on Wednesday and enjoy the boat that has been sitting at the dock waiting for an excuse to go out. See the famous Magothy sunsets that the racers have been keeping to themselves. Awards will be issued on the basis of events sailed in a series and not on finish order. Boats participating in the Sunset Sail will not be required to have PHRF Certificates and will be Jib and Main only. They are expected to have the appropriate safety gear for their vessel and adhere to basic rules of the road along with being mindful of the Racing Fleet which are competing. Sailors who want to give this a try do not have to sign up for the entire season and can sign up for individual series 1-5. This is intended to be a low key event and suitable for shorthanded crews and novice sailors along with experienced sailors wanting to use the boat without the pressure of getting the gun. This is open to members of MRSA, PSA, YCCSC and GIYS. If you are not a member of one of these local clubs the Magothy River Sailing Association is accepting new members with a nominal membership fee.
