But, the MRSA calendar continues to include many activities with racing, cruising and social events through the end of Soon the "Day Mark" will arrive listing these activities. We have had some well attended events and a few that had to be cancelled because of the weather or even participation. Join in to the festivities and meet some of our new members and catch up with some old acquaintances. I am including an that I had sent to everyone about our MRSA elections coming up in November: As we look forward to our November national elections, one can see the intensity only increasing with more mud slinging and name calling, more than we have ever witnessed. In contrast, our MRSA elections in November will be friendly, civil and finish without a protest. Officers and committee chairs are supported by their fellow members and ex-officers of which there is an extensive list. When I said supported, I can state that as my first year in office as Vice Commodore and being new to the association I had all the helping hands and support I needed. This year we have an exceptional challenge. The open positions for our 2017 season are; Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, and Fleet Captain Cruising and Secretary. The success and longevity of our association is dependent on members stepping forward to fill these positions and keeping MRSA the jewel that it is. Can you imagine life without Wednesday night racing, or Junior Training as a independent entity? Even worse, think of merging with a powerboat club and changing our name to maybe...magothy River Boating Association, just to keep our organization whole. I am not preaching doom and gloom. I just know we need the new ideas and the enthusiasm that new members can contribute to our association. 2 Omelet Cruise to Church Creek The Sunday Brunch Cruise to Church Creek on the north shore of the South River will be September 17 th and 18th. Plan to arrive by 1700 hours on Saturday to enjoy happy hour ashore at the Wilelinor Community beachfront. Bring a hors d oeuvre to share. In case of inclement weather, happy hour will be in the community pavilion adjacent to the marina and beach area. Taxi service will be available upon request. Contact Rich at The community has recently purchased a gas grill that will be available for anyone interested in cooking dinner ashore. Sunday morning, Rich and Toni will host the annual omelet brunch and open house at their home. If you can t come by boat, plan to arrive by land yacht and enjoy a weekend on the South River. Please RSVP for the brunch to insure that we have enough eggs to feed the masses. Brunch will be served beginning at 0900 hours and will continue until all the eggs have been consumed. Local Knowledge for Church Creek on the South River Once you enter the South River continue to day marker Red 12. Beyond R 12, day mark R 14 that previously served as the turning mark into Church Creek has been removed. Begin a sweeping right turn from R 12 toward the speed marker at the entrance to the creek at heading of 340oM. You should be in feet of water. Be aware of shoaling to starboard as you continue toward the entrance. As you approach the speed marker, the better water is to the right side. Once inside the marker, stay to the center of the creek. You will see a community marina on the left. Continue up the creek. On the right side just beyond the second pier you will see a wooden bulkhead. Be sure that you are at least two boat lengths off the bulkhead. Beyond the bulkhead on the left will be a speed marker on the left side, along the shore with marsh grass behind the marker. There is a shoal extending two to three boat lengths from the speed marker, stay to the right of the creek as you pass the speed marker. Once past the speed marker stay in the middle of the creek. Beyond the speed marker continue in the center of the creek. Looking ahead, you will see a house with bright yellow awnings. The community marina is on the point to the right of the house with the yellow awnings. Off the point, the creek narrows past a speed marker on a pilling. Anchor in the creek before the speed marker. The water depth is approximately 8 feet and carries well up to the wooded shore to starboard. A floating dingy dock is available along the community bulkhead. Directions by land yacht to the Church Creek Cruise. Take Ritchie Highway south to Route 50 West. Follow Route 50 west to Exit 22 for Aris Allen Boulevard (Route 665). Exit Route 665 at Solomon s Island Road (Route 2). From the exit ramp continue straight across route 2 into the community of Wilelinor. As you are facing Christ Church, turn right. Proceed to the stop sign. Turn left on to Wilelinor Drive. Follow Wilelinor Drive until it curves to the left. As Wilelinor Drive turns back to the right continue onto Carvel Circle. The tan house with red shutters on the left (11 Carvel Circle) is the Hughes Craft Brewery featured at PSA s 2016 Race to Rock Hall September 24,

The Eastern Shore brewery (St. Michaels) has been tapped to offer select samplings of their craft beers as part of the shore party following PSA s 4 th annual Race to Rock Hall. Brew master and owner Adrian Moritz will be on hand to showcase his finest brews of the season and educate our sailing crowd regarding one of Maryland s fastest growing industries and his specialties. In addition, PSA has revamped the format of the race and will organize the fleets into two groups by setting two courses a shorter one for the cruising and slower fleets, and a longer one for the performance oriented and multihull classes. Jay Tyson, CRCA president attended last year s event and suggested such modifications have worked well with other regattas with large cruising class participation. The 2015 event was surprisingly well attended, given the wicked wind forecasts that persisted all week, and actually held true on race day! About 25 percent of the entries did not start and those who did struggled to complete the 15 mile course with apparent wind speeds frequently exceeding 30 knots. Much of the previous attractions remain in place, Gosling s Dark n Stormy cocktails, hot pulled pork sandwich platters, raw oysters and live music courtesy of PSA s own Rick Truitt and Peter Swartz at the poolside gazebo. For revelers seeking finer overnight accommodations, Haven Harbour Marina has acquired a local inn within walking distance of the marina. Reservations can be made online or by calling Haven Harbour marina directly. For more information about the race, the Notice of Race is posted on the CBYRA and Regatta Network sites. Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show October 9-17 by Jon Mullarky The second week of October will be a great time for a visit to Baltimore. October 9 16 will be a busy time in and around Baltimore Harbor. The piers will be filled with vessels preparing to compete in the Great Schooner Race, as well as US and Canadian naval vessels. Featured among them will be the US Navy s newest warship, the US 3

4 ZUMWALT. The ZUMWALT is the largest destroyer and most technologically advanced surface combatant in the world with a brand-new, state-of-the-art electric propulsion system, wave-piercing hull, stealth design and the latest in fighting technology and weaponry available, The ship is named in recognition of the achievements and legacy of Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, whose tenure as Chief of Naval Operations in the 1980 s was marked by trail-blazing initiatives to improve the quality of life for enlisted Navy Sailors. It will be in Baltimore on October 10 and be commissioning on October 15. For more information on the ship visit Schooner race vessels will begin leaving Baltimore Harbor at 8:30 am on October 13 for the race to Norfolk stating line near the Bay Bridge. The show in the air will take place near Fort McHenry. The Navy s Blue Angels will fly practice session between 1 and 4 pm on October 13 and 14. The Air Show on October 15 and 16, will feature precision flight demonstrations from the US Navy, US Air Force, US Coast Guard, Royal Canadian Air Force, Geico Skytypers, Scott Francis Airshows, and more over a two-and-a-half-hour period between approximately 1:00-4:00 p.m. over Fort McHenry. The finale is a 45-minute demonstration by the Blue Angels. The Coast Guard has established a Regulated Area between 11 am and 5 pm on the Patapsco River from October 13 through October 16. If you plan to visit Baltimore by sea, you should review the Summary of Marine Events section the latest Fifth CG District Local Notice to Mariners for information on anchorage boundaries and restrictions in effect for the shows. 6 By Debbie Lund The MRSA long cruise was cut short by Hermine. The Lunds, Poes, Hughes and Petersons spent the last week of August cruising the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The first three days were exploring LaTrappe Creek and the Tred Avon River. On Sunday, we had an unexpected surprise-log Canoe races at the Tred Avon Yacht Club. Originally, we had planned to go from Oxford to San Domingo Creek, the backdoor to St. Michaels, but the group decided to stay near Oxford. The Lunds, Poes and Hughes motored up and down the Tred Avon. It is a beautiful river with several good anchorages. On Monday night, we had dinner in the Robert Morris Inn, and Fred and Sue Betz joined the group by car. On Tuesday, the group left Oxford and went to the Solomons. The goal was to take a tour of the Sotterley Plantation on Wednesday. The Sotterley Plantation is in St. Mary s County about an hour up the river. The plantation has been restored, and the gardens and home are beautiful. The tour guide was great and very knowledgeable. After taking the tour, we spent the night in St. Leonard s Creek. The entire week was hot and dry until Wednesday night. The biggest surprise was that we could go swimming in the Choptank and the Patuxent Rivers. We didn t need to use the jellyfish pool. The water felt great, and it was cleaner than the Magothy River. Thursday was the only day of nasty weather. The rain and the northeast wind increased in the morning. The Hurricane Hermine was hitting Florida, and the prediction was to come up the coast. Everyone, except the Lunds, decided to head for home. The Lunds took a mooring in Annapolis. On Friday, we went to Eagle Cove, near Gibson Island, and the Bonham s hosted Happy Hour/Dinner for the Lunds and Poes. The highest winds came during the night, so, at dawn on Saturday, the Lunds headed home as witnessed by Loura from her sunroom. New Members of MRSA Peggy Poe 6

7 This month, we are introducing two new member families just voted into membership by the BOG (Board of Governors). Please say hello to Mary and Jim Dean who live in Pasadena on Cockey Creek. They sail Aura, a 23foot ocean-going Westerly sloop. Jim has many years of sailing experience and has written several books. I bet he has many good sailing stories to share. [Next Sockburning, Editor's note.] Jim and Mary came to their first MRSA party at the June picnic at the Poulsens. The BOG also welcomed Colleen and Brad Hansen, sponsored by Shep Drain. I hear that the Hansens have already started racing on Wednesday nights with a boat full of kids. The Hansens live on Dividing Road in Severna Park and have two boys, Dylan and Garrett. They sail a Santana 30. We are reposting this as a reminder to make sure to welcome our new members! Future Events FROSTBITE CRUISE By Debbie Lund I hate to write about the last cruise of the season. As of right now, I don t have a restaurant picked out, but let s cruise to Annapolis on October 29th and 30th. The mooring field is usually available that time of year, and Annapolis is a great place to people/boat watch. If it is too cold or windy, you can drive to the destination. More information will follow in October. 7
