Commodore s Comments We all know that every time you leave your slip for a sail, it is always different. And so it was at our Annual Sock Burning on April 25th. Last year I wore shorts. This year I wore my Under Armour long underwear and a heavy sweat shirt and still kept near the large camp fire that our hosts RT and Cecilia had ready to warm us as we arrived. Eddie Looper again contributed the use of his beautiful shore facility and a never ending supply of firewood. Thank you, Eddie. The cool weather did not stop the warm and friendly sailing stories for which RT presented his unusual awards. In addition, awards were presented for the most tantalizing food item and unusual sock to be burnt. Rich and Toni Hughes were making the campfire pies to order, cherry or apple, and hot dogs and marshmallows were abundant. In fact, many members sacrificed several marshmallows to the gods of the campfire. Debbie Lund was laughing so hard, she could not blow out the fire on her marshmallow which she promptly sacrificed to the gods of the campfire. About 35 members enjoyed the food, beverages and great friendship of our fellow members. Our racing schedule has started with 3 races already under our belt, and our Junior Training has a full slate of students for the summer Things are moving here at MRSA. Are you a part of the action? Come join us. Thanks, Dave Pirone Commodore, MRSA It s Been a Long Cold Winter We found some new members under the snow! At the brunch, we introduced two new member one of which is really a returning member. Some of our long-time members may remember this new member. Nancy Cann Shimer and husband Craig Shimer are the newest MRSA members and joined us at the fabulous brunch at Annapolis Yacht Club in March. Nancy and Craig live in Pasadena and are happy to have a grandchild in our junior training program with more grandchildren waiting in the wings just itching to start the program when they are old enough. (Now, that is good news!) For 30 years, Nancy owned Crusader Yacht Sales and has had extensive sailing experience. You may have run into her somewhere in your sailing life, so, please welcome our new members, Craig and Nancy! Ask not what MRSA can do for you, ask what you can do for your MRSA Hi everyone. Just like the marines who are looking for a few good men and women, MRSA needs a few more volunteers to lead some of the cruises planned for this season. These cruises are: Labor Day Cruise, September 5-7. This is a new cruise, tentatively planned for the Choptank, with a visit to St. Michaels through the "back door" (San Domingo Creek). Not set in stone, so new ideas along with a cruise leader :) would be welcome. Constellation Cup, October This is also new to the MRSA calendar. The Constellation Cup is an annual fun race to benefit the historic ships in the Inner Harbor. The course starts near Fort McHenry, goes southeast through the Key Bridge, rounds Fort Carroll, goes back up past Fort McHenry, and finishes right by Constellation in the Inner Harbor. The day ends with a fantastic catered party on the Constellation dock. There is a division for the diehard racers, but most boats participate in the full-keel or fin-keel divisions with a pursuit start (the boats start according to PHRF ratings, so, whoever finishes first is first and no nail-biting crowded starting line). Ratings are given if you don't have one. I have sailed in four of these events and had a blast each time--all for a good cause. Please consider volunteering to lead one of these cruises; if you need more information, please feel free to contact me. Norm Poulsen, Fleet Captain Cruising 2

Mark your calendar Blue Angels Cruise May 19th Back again by popular demand! Last year we were rained out. The Blue Angels will return, and Ravenous will be ready! The acrobatic team of F/18 Hornets representing the U.S. Navy is back in the air and flying here for the Naval Academy graduation. They are not just here for MRSA enjoyment, but we can enjoy them! A mid-week cruise is planned for Tuesday, May 19th. Look at your calendars and consider taking the day off from work and from your busy volunteer activities. Pack your cameras and a sandwich and climb aboard Ravenous, joining Captain Ed Poe for a day on the water to thrill at the aerobatics of these beautiful flyers. Let Ed Poe know that you would like to see the Blue Angels on Ravenous by ing him at mpoe1@comcast.net or calling He will leave the dock at about 10:00 a.m. and probably return by about 4:00 p.m. Ed will provide water and other beverages. You should bring your own lunch. 3

BUDDING NEW ARTIST Those of you who have in attended the Wye River cruise may recall the drawing contest in which a new budding artist was recognized for his unique work. That was the birth of the summer series print, THE WYE AT NIGHT. The drawing, THE WYE AT NIGHT, was shown at an Easton, Maryland, art gallery this winter. Now, the winter series is proud to releasing the new drawing, AMISH CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. Both are available in print and on t-shirts at The artist is planning to attend this year's Memorial Day Cruise to the Wye River and will be available for signings. So, plan to make the cruise May 23, 24, 25. The Wye at Night Summer Solstice Cruise June 20 and 21, Frequent Flyer will be leading the cruise to the West River. We will be anchored off of Pirate's Cove Marina. Slips there are first come first served and very reasonably priced. Happy hour will convene at 5 p.m. on Frequent Flyer unless otherwise advised. Those who wish to dine on shore have three restaurants to choose from--big Mary's, Pirate's Cove Restaurant and Thursday's Restaurant. No reservations have been made. In years past, Back Creek Yacht Club provided entertainment for the entire anchorage with several bands playing on a large boat to celebrate the Summer Solstice. We're hoping they do this again this year. Please drop us a line, text or call and let us know if you plan to join us in celebrating the longest day of the year. louradbonham@gmail.com or by phone at Hope to see you there. Mike & Loura Bonham, Frequent Flyer 5

MRSA Members Gather to Burn Socks At 4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 25, 2015, Mike Mullarky arrived early by canoe to help Mike Bonham, RT and Eddie Looper set up for the event. Eddie had made several improvements to the area, and all were more than satisfactory. Approximately 30 of MRSA 's faithful gathered at Looper Beach along the shores of Broad Creek just off the Magothy. The heavily overcast skies contributed to chilly temperatures making the bonfire a much appreciated necessity. Members began arriving right on time. The food was laid out, members conversed as they roasted hot dogs, marshmallows and hobo pies over the open fire. Beverages of various tastes were available to insure adequate hydration. Commodore Pirone kicked off the event interaction with warm greetings as all assembled around the bonfire. Tony Torres was the prize recipient of "tastiest dish to pass" for his contribution of a Spanish Catalonian Tortillia de Patata omelet. Sea stories were told and memories that brought numerous smiles to members faces as antics of times gone by were reminisced. Loura Bonham began a sea story that gave Mike Mullarky a leg up as the winner of the "Best Sea Story" prize that he shared with Loura for initiating the tale. After numerous stories and attempts, the only member to arrive by power boat, Alan Weiss, was acknowledged with a consolation prize for his "not so good sea stories" which ended up rather ironic as his boat battery positive terminal bit Alan s thumb and index finger while failing to start. Eddie Looper came to the rescue, and a jump start got them underway. Hopefully, they made it safely back to home port. For the most part, the socks brought for burning came with no stories and were rather boring with the exception of Joe Jackins socks that won "most unique sock" prize for their distinctive nautical pattern. As the festivities concluded, all members participated in the cleanup, then almost on cue the clouds could no longer contain their moisture as a gentile precipitation began to fall, and everyone departed thanking Eddie Looper for the use of his beach and gracious hospitality. 7 Cruise Leaders Hi everyone, I want to let you know that due to the lack of a cruise leader and anticipated low participation, the New Members Cruise scheduled for next weekend (5/9-5/10) is canceled. I want to thank all of you for volunteering to lead one or more MRSA cruises this year; without your help, MRSA would belong only to the racers, and of course we don't want that! I would like to briefly remind everyone of the responsibilities of our cruise leaders. First, be sure to write a description of the cruise you are leading to be put in the edition of the Old Man that precedes the cruise. The "Old Man" usually comes out early in the second week of each month, so please send this description to Mike Bonham around the first of the month. I will try to send an out to remind each leader to do this, but don't count on me! 7

Second, while on the cruise, try to get the names of everyone who is attending, whether they came by boat or by land, and if it is a multi-day cruise, who was there for the different days. Please send this information to me after the cruise. Third, following the cruise, please write another article to send to Mike that describes what happened on the cruise (particularly any fun or humorous events) and who attended the cruise. Thanks very much, and let me know if you have any questions. Norm Poulsen Fleet Captain Cruising Racing Corner Racers, PSA s 2 nd Annual Moonlight Race Potapskut Sailing Association will be hosting their second Moonlight Race, scheduled for June 6, As in prior years, the start and finish will be at Baltimore light unless the race is shortened due to wind conditions saw major changes to this event with all classes now qualifying for long distance credits. Only one class (multihull A) will sail a course to Poole s Island Light. All other classes will sail as far north as Craighill Light and round other Region II government marks as designated by the CBYRA Region 2 chart. So what s new? Well, a couple of things. The success of a few short-handed races last year has resulted in the formation of a new sailing organization: The Chesapeake Short-handed Sailing Society. PSA s 2014 Moonlight Race was among several featuring a short-handed class to see what interest would materialize. As a total surprise, the short-handed class was the largest fleet in the race! MRSA s own Randy and Warren Richter sailed their Soverel 33 Pressure drop to victory over 8 other competitors entered in this class. The 2015 event will feature two short-handed classes--both spinnaker and non-spinnaker. There is continuing discussion that proposes to create yet another class for single-handed racing, so, stay tuned for more details later this year. Notice of race is posted on Regatta Network or on PSA s website: One last note: PSA also includes a cruising class in this as well as their Rock Hall races in September. This is truly a cruising class and does not allow spinnakers. PSA also hosts a hearty breakfast with Bloody Mary s at their clubhouse on Blackhole Creek following the race. Racers can come by boat or land if they prefer. For more information, please contact Lanny Helms by at ilhelms@comcast.net. 8
