1 The Old Man The Monthly Newsletter of the Magothy River Sailing Association Calendar of Upcoming Events - Dec. 3 Membership Meeting - Belvedere Yacht Club - Dec. 12 Parade of Lights Party November 2015 Commodore s Comments Well, it's that time of year again. No, not daylight savings time, Not time to rake bushels and bushels of leaves (but it really is) or put your boat on the "Hard." This time of year is when MRSA selects our officers for the next calendar year. The early December Wine & Cheese/Election meeting is one of our most attended event, because of all the tasty dishes and beverages provided by our members. I am proud to say we almost have a full slate for I am proud because of the dedication of our Board Members, Committee Chairpersons,and support staff who have committed to continue on for another year of service. The officer positions for 2016 are as follows: Commodore-- Dave Pirone, Vice Commodore--OPEN, Rear Commodore--Shep Drain, Fleet Captain Cruising--Norm Poulsen, Fleet Captain Junior Training--Evan Clayton, Secretary--Sue Kirkendall, Fleet Master--John Baumert, Treasurer-- Homer Sandridge, Immediate Past Commodore--Mike Bonham. 1

2 You may have noticed that the Vice Commodore position is still OPEN. I am hoping that someone will step up and fill this office. We were very successful in assigning the social events' responsibilities of the Vice Commodore to members who volunteered to handle these events and will continue this practice for some time. As I have stated in the past, our staff of members has been more than accommodating and helpful. If someone is interested in this office, there will be plenty of helpful support to see you through. An area of some concern is the membership attrition which has been taking place for the last several years. In my community alone, Mil-Bur, three MRSA members are moving out of the state this year. We are trying to re-publish a membership flyer to help introduce our association to likely members. But, we need your help. Do you have a neighbor, a crew member or a fellow cruising friend that might be interested in joining MRSA? We really need your help to spread the word about boating, sailing, racing or cruising on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay waters with MRSA. Thank you, Dave Pirone, Commodore, MRSA Cruise Wrap-Up Frostbite Cruise Debbie Lund The last MRSA cruise of the season was held on the weekend of October It was a cruise to Annapolis and dinner at Buddies. The Lunds on Min Van IV were the only participants that came by boat. Rich Hughes came by car but joined us for Happy Hour on the boat. Dick and Marianne Kammann with Dick s son, David, and Holly met us at Buddies. Ed and Peggy Poe also met us at the restaurant. Everyone had been busy during the day preparing their boats for winter. It is that time of year. The winds were fairly light but it was still great to be on the water. Annapolis was hopping with 210 Opti sailors racing in the Atlantic Coast Championship. When you are moored in the Annapolis Harbor, the boat is in constant movement. It can be late at night, and there are still waves! It is always fun and entertaining watching the various boats and people come and go in the harbor. This wraps up the 2015 cruising season.. Mark your calendar MRSA Membership Meeting If it is December, it must be a Christmas party! Well.no. This time, it is an MRSA Membership meeting, disguised as a Wine and Cheese and lots of good hors d oeuvres party! But, it is always festive and fun, and Belvedere Yacht Club is decorated for Christmas. So let us celebrate! MRSA members will gather together on Thursday, December 3 rd at 6:30 pm to enjoy each other s company, a cold beverage or two, some delicious hot and cold nibbles, and to elect the officers to lead us into The election of new officers is an important task, and one not to be taken lightly! So please join us for our evening of celebration and deliberation. Come and toast the holiday season and the members who are willing to undertake the leadership of MRSA. Bring your favorite wine and hors d oeuvres to share. Beer and soft drinks will be provided by MRSA. See you at Belvedere Yacht Club on December 3 rd at 6:30 pm. 2

3 Eastport Yacht Club 2015 Parade of Lights Join MRSA in viewing the Eastport Yacht Club s Parade of Lights on Saturday, December 12 th. We have a room reserved at the Annapolis Marriot Waterfront for warmth and refreshment. The room assignments are made at check in so watch the website for an announcement or check at the front desk when you arrive. The parade begins at 1800 hours and will continue until 2000 hours. You are welcome to join us any time after 1700 hours. Plan to bring an appetizer or dessert to share. We will have a large pot of chili to warm you as well as drinks (soda, beer, warm cider). 5 Bay Bites Bay bites is a new addition to the "Old Man" of tasty treats that can be made on a boat. I know we all love our boats and enjoy eating, so, dig up your favorite boat recipe from your galley to share with the MRSA members Please send your recipe to newsletter@magothysailing.com, and I will publish it in Bay Bites. QUICHE LORRAINE by Mike Bonham 1/2 lb bacon fried & crumbled (noncured, nitrate free is available at Giant & Trader Joe's) 1 c grated sharp or swiss cheese 1/2 onion chopped 4 eggs beaten adding 1-1/2 c milk, higher milk fat makes richer consistency 1/2 t. nutmeg 1 t. salt pepper as desired dash worchester dash of tabasco Place first 3 ingredients in bottom of pie shell (Pillsbury roll outs are great) or deep 9-inch frozen. Pour milk & ingredients on top of first 3 ingredients. Garnish with parsley flakes, sliced mushrooms, broccoli, red bell pepper strips, or other desired veggie. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. Continue baking at 325 degrees for minutes, testing center with knife.
