1 The Old Man The Monthly Newsletter of the Magothy River Sailing Association January Commodores Ball Tony Torres The Winter Solstice is behind us, the Christmas and New Year Parties are over, and now the days are getting longer. There is one more event that will bring the MRSA members together for one more celebration and help shake off the winter cold as we end a very successful 2006 and start a 2007 sailing season with the annual Commodores Ball. The place is the Gibson Island Yacht Club, overlooking the Bay. The date is January 13 th at 6:30PM. Please mark the date down on your calendars, and join us as we say a final goodbye to 2006 and say hello to The invitations have been mailed and we hope to see all at this MRSA highlight event. At the event, as is customary, we will thank but not say goodbye to the 2006 Officers of the MRSA and install the 2007 Officers. Without the commitment of the Board, we the racers and cruisers alike would not enjoy all the activities that the MRSA Board volunteers make possible. There will be words of wisdom by a past Commodore, our host for the evening, reminding the members of past history and of events that some of us would like to forget. The Commodores Ball is always a fun event and enjoyed by all. (Member #GA S) Commodore s Comments Diane Jackins Although this is the last column I ll be sending to you, there are some MRSA events that I will be looking forwarding to attending with you. First, our annual commodore s ball will be on January 13 at the Gibson Island Club. Please come enjoy the camaraderie and welcome in the new board members. This, the club s premier event, is not to be missed. Look for your invitation in the mail. In February, we will have our annual cruise planning party and the annual race planning party. Dates and places for these will be announced later. As the year draws to a close, I d like to thank the MRSA officers, committee chairs, committee members, and the many volunteers who helped make the club s programs so successful this year. It is amazing how many people and how many different talents it takes to run the various programs the club offers. We are truly lucky to have so many individuals give their time and talents to promote the club s racing, cruising, junior training, and other activities. Many of these activities are performed behind the scenes, but would be sorely missed if they were not done. So, here is a big thanks to the following individuals. Racing Roger, for ensuring that our racers have marks to round Mark, for making sure that our race gear is in order (and that we have shells) Drew, for handling the inevitable protests Dick and Marianne, for providing the refreshments (and a boat) on Wednesday night raft-ups And a great big thanks to Ed and Jim, for looking for ways to improve the racing venue Cruising Burry, for planning great events and finding leaders for all of them Continued on Page: 3 Page: 2

I could not have done it without you. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your commodore this year. I have enjoyed working, sailing, racing, partying with, and generally getting to know many of you better. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year and wish you all a healthy and prosperous new year full of sailing opportunities. Lighted Boat Parade Annette Mullarky The air outside was chilly, but toasty warm in the Marriott, where MRSA once again hosted a room. About three dozen people braved the parking in Annapolis (much more of a challenge than the weather), and joined in the fun. Although MRSA did not have an entry this year, there were many beautiful boats to cheer for, and our previous entries (both last year s Santa and the heron from a few years ago) had photos in the program. Thanks to the Bonham s, Dorf s and Jackins for your help in making the event so successful. We ve pre-reserved our room for next year, so be sure to mark your calendars! Page: 3

4 Kent Narrows Channel George Stamps and Philippe Masiee George Stamps and I would like to bring to your attention the request for a letter to your congressman. Members should feel free to write if they are interested in keeping navigable channels open for pleasure craft. Maryland Legislative Report Kevin Noon OSLMD@CBYCA.ORG It has been my pleasure working as the MD State Legislative Director. As I prepared my final message I was torn as to whether to recap our accomplishments (which we had many) or to speak of the GREATEST DANGER to our mission, I chose the latter. I would ask each member of CBYCA to visit I feel confident you will be moved. I still remember the first public meeting I attended about LNG. A concerned citizen asked why did the LNG Ship needed to dock transom in. The answer was "because if anything happens we need to get this ship out of here!!!" The response was right after 30 minutes of diatribe to explain how safe this stuff is. We are in a struggle with the largest energy group in the world and they will go to any length to get their way. Their recent law suits exemplify what they will do to get what they want. There are reports of serious shoaling in the Kent Narrows Channel. This condition requires the immediate attention of the US Army Corps of Engineers for emergency dredging operation and funding. The channel is authorized to 60 feet wide and a depth 01'7.0 MLW. If the channel is not dredged, it will not remain navigable for any deep draft boats for the upcoming boating season. CBYCA Delegate Dick Miller of Kent Island YC has approached the issue but will need all the help available to convince officials to fund maintenance dredging. The Corps has informed the State and County that they do not have any funds in their budget to dredge the channel. The preliminary estimated cost for the project is $1.5 million. The CBYCA suggests a letter from the Member Clubs to their congressional delegate, urging funding for this project so the Corps can dredge the North Channel before the upcoming boating season. Come kick-off a new sailing year with an evening of dinner, dancing and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow MRSA sailors. You are welcome to bring guests, so - Bring your crew! Bring a new member! The event will be Saturday, January 13th at the Gibson Island Club, from 6:30 PM until midnight. Cost is $55 per person, and reservations must be received by January 3rd. This is always a fun event, so if you haven t attended in the past, come see what you re missing. I promise the weather will be no worse than the last ten years! 5 Membership Renewal Times Loura Bonham Your 2007 Membership Renewal and Dues Notice was recently mailed to you. As indicated by MRSA bylaws, payment should be made by January 15, To assure that your complete and accurate information is included in the Red Book, it is important that you pay your dues by January 15. If the treasurer has not received your payment, you very well could have your name and info not make our Red Book publishing deadline. Please remember to: 1. Review your personal and boat information on your renewal notice to assure that it is accurate. 2. Write a check for $75 for active members and $25 for inactive members, payable to Magothy River Sailing Association. 3. Mail your check and completed member data form to Magothy River Sailing Association P.O. Box 1135 Pasadena, MD Wine, Cheese & Elections Annette Mullarky On December 7th, about 45 people braved the possibility of snow (and the actuality of minimal flurries) to attend the December meeting and elections at the Belvedere Yacht Club. Everyone enjoyed the food, wine and festivities kicking off the holiday season. The Nominating Committee presented a slate of officers, which was elected as presented.
