By Jon Mullarky, Commodore Summer may be almost over, but sailing season isn t! Seems like only a few weeks ago that we burned our socks and kicked off our MRSA summer sailing activities. Wednesday evenings brought our racers out on Magothy waters seeking to be the first over the finish line in their class. We sponsored several Bay races, and the MRSA flag flew on some major races including the Governors Cup. Our junior sailors learned new sailing skills at our Junior Training Program co-sponsored with the Grachur Club in June and had the opportunity to put their racing skills to a test on several Monday evening junior race events. MRSA cruisers spent an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend on the Wye River. The July 4 th visit to Oxford brought weather fireworks and the Race/Cruise to the Corsica River gave MRSA the honor of having the only racing boat to finish the race, and the new club name of the Magothy River Automobile Club for our great turnout, all of whom traveled by land yacht to enjoy the barbeque in degree heat. Other cruise destinations included Annapolis, Mill Creek, and the famous Pirate Cruise to Swan Creek. As these comments are written our Long Cruise is in Virginia waters. Our social events, the Cinco de Mayo party, June picnic, Dog Days in Eagle Cove and the August picnic had great turnouts. As you can see MRSA has been very active this summer. Many thanks to all the members who organized these successful events! September brings more Wednesday night racing, Annapolis Race week, the Labor Day Cruise to Reed Creek and the always popular Dessert Cruise to Baltimore on September 17 th. Hope you will be able to make these events. Your BOG continues to mind the business of the Association. At the last meeting the BOG confirmed the appointment of Wes McNair to fill the remainder of Jim McCutchan s term as Page 1

Submitted by Myron Dorf Frostbitten Goose Goose Cruise - October Frostbite Cruise - October MRSA cruisers can always be counted on to step up when needed. It s been a great cruising season so far and to make it perfect we need leaders for the Goose Cruise and Frostbite Cruise. Please call Myron Dorf at or myrondorf@comcast.net if you can help with either cruise. Tall Tales from Past Cruises and Events Corsica River Cruise July Submitted by Mike Mullarky, Cruise Leader The Corsica River Yacht Club's new facilities are HOT! At least they were on the weekend of July 23-24, with temperatures over 100 degrees, high humidity and light winds. Although most folks prudently decided to land cruise and remain in their air conditioning as much as possible, the MRSA burgee did fly over the anchorage. Cold beverages, the Bluegrass band, and the usual barbecue chicken were enjoyed as we discussed our favorite ways to stay cool. Attending were new members Dolly & Fred Webster, Beth Vanfossen & Lewis Neisner (trying to escape the relative coolness of upstate New York), Carolyn & George Stamps, Marianne & Dick Kammann, Loura & Mike Bonham, Debbie & John Lund, Philippe Masiee, Jon Mullarky, Ruth Baumert and Annette & Mike Mullarky. PHOTO CREDITS: Special thanks to Ed and Peggy Poe, Loura Bonham, Wally Gribbin, Mike Mullarky, and Kathy Polk. If anybody thinks they can get rid of this excess (but truly lovely) blue bar by having the Editor send an original format newsletter, and then you remove the excess, PLEASE send an to the Editor with your offer. Thank You! - ED Summer August Cruise/Picnic to Milbur on Cornfield Creek Submitted by Myron Dorf, Cruise Leader The weather gods cooperated on August 20 and the predicted bad weather disappeared from the forecast in time for a full contingent of MRSA members and guests to enjoy a beautiful day with mild temperatures, a nice breeze, and clear skies. Approximately 50 adults and children enjoyed Mike Bonham s cooked to perfection burgers and hot dogs as well as all the delicious side dishes and desserts supplied by members. The food was protected by a 12 foot square tent supplied by Bill Taylor that somehow expanded from a small package. The kayaks, bean bag game, and swings were in use but the pool was the happening place with children and grandchildren and some adults diving and splashing and enjoying themselves. With the good weather a few represented the cruising end with the Gendels arriving by sail boat, the Polks and family by power boats, the Poe s family by power boat, and the McNairs by whaler. Put a note on your calendar for next August and plan to join us for a repeat of a fun day. Special Membership Notices and Announcements Special note from Jill McCutchan Dear MRSA Family, Words cannot express the appreciation I feel during this time of deep sorrow. Thanks for the wonderful times Jim and I had together sailing with you. Thanks for your prayers, notes, phone calls, cards, flowers, visits, and meals. Your expression of sympathy will always be remembered by my family. Love, Jill, Heather, Mollie, Jamie & grandkids (McCutchan family) Welcome new members AND prospective members! Submitted by Peggy Poe, Membership Chairman If you have had a chance to sail or race on the Magothy on Wednesday evenings, you may have noticed that there are some new additions to the Wednesday night races. Last year, a start was added for a Multi-Hull Class. And so another multi-hull sailor has joined MRSA this month. Kevin Duffy, captain of Tri-Again, a Corsair F-24MK11, has been voted in as our newest MRSA member. Kevin comes a long way to race on Wednesday night. He lives in Laurel, but he says he has sailed for over 30 years mostly on mono-hulls, but has seen the light and now enjoys multi s. Please join me in welcoming Kevin to our club. Page 4
5 Missing Kayak on the Magothy If you have, or have seen my green wood and canvas kayak, please call me at The kayak was last seen at The Grachur Club boathouse this spring. It was discovered missing the first week of August. The kayak is painted green, about 10 feet long, made of canvas covered wood, and has three wooden longerons with brass rub strips on the bottom, plus a bow fitting for a painter or anchor. It only supports about 150 pounds. The bow canvas is worn and needs repair. There are two permanent seats inside, and a small metal plate hand-hammered that says Sid Polk in cursive along with a date: 1936 (or maybe 1938) noting the maker and date built. There are also three missing double-ended wood paddles that were with the kayak. Two paddles are about 5 feet long, rather squarish, one with red blades and one with day-glow orange blades. The third paddle is about 6 feet long, carved from a single piece of wood, and varnished. Everything was made by my father or me. The boat has been kept and/or used by 4 generations of my family at Grachur, off and on since originally built. Note photo of my three year old grandson paddling the kayak last summer at Grachur and the photo of my son and his daughter in the boat a year or two earlier. Please call if you have any information concerning the kayak and the paddles. Thank you. Bert Polk, Looking for a New Foot Sailboat Dave & Laura Ellerbrake are considering buying another boat. Serendipity is at the top of our list, but she's not for sale. If you have a boat for sale (or know of a boat for sale) that is similar to our Elite 324, please contact us. We're looking for something in the 30' to 35' range. Our address is d.ellerbrake@yahoo.com. Racing Corner Good Magothy Showing at the Governor s Cup By Joe Berchielli, Racer Magothy River racers once again posted a strong showing in the Governors Cup race to Saint Mary s City which was held in early August. Congratulations to co-skippers Ed Tracey and Tim (or some other) Polk and the crew of Page 5
6 Incommunicado who finished second among 21 starting boats in PHRF-B fleet. Congratulations also to skipper Joe Lombardo and the crew of Ingenuity who finished second among 28 starters in the Non-spin class. The racing season's second raft-up was held on August 17. Fifteen boats gathered with Gene McCollum's Boondoggle immediately after the Wednesday night race to share beverages, snacks, camaraderie, and a sunset on the Magothy. Junior Sailing Program See you next Spring!
