This summer has brought us warm days and wind. The racing community has been stymied by no wind and too much wind (is there ever too much wind?) The cruising community has enjoyed warm even hot days but wind for most events. The first weekend in August brought us to the annual Governor s Cup Bay Race with good winds to our Club boats taking part in this event. The cruisers are planning to invade Rock Hall for an exciting Pirate s Weekend August 8-9. Bring your sword and treasure to this event and buckle your swash! We will host a Club Picnic at the community of Milbur on the 22nd. Please join us by land or sea. He that is a sailor Must have a valiant heart, For when he is upon the sea He is not like to start, But must, with noble courage, All dangers undergo; Resolve, resolve, Howe'er the wind doth blow. - from Sailors for my Money by Martin Parker Page 1

Cornfield Creek is a well-protected, secure anchorage just off the north shore of the Magothy near Gibson Island. Look for the Mil-Bur community pier at the north end. us at myrondorf@comcast.net or call if you are coming by boat and will be needing dinghy service or if you have any questions. On land festivities begin at 1:00 pm with food, games, swimming pool, kayaks, conversation, etc. See you on the 22nd. Labor Day Weekend Cruise, September 5-7, Choptank By Al & Sue Kirkendall We are Looking Forward to seeing you on the Labor Day Cruise, September 5-7. Come and join us for the Labor Day weekend on the Choptank River. Happy Hour will begin around 5:30 in quiet Waterhole Cove aboard Flying Low on Saturday Evening. Sunday morning we will move to the Oxford area (possibly Plaindealing Creek) and will plan on taking a short dingy ride into Oxford for dinner. If you do not have a dingy do not worry as there will be plenty of room for you on the others. On Monday morning we will bid the Long Cruise participants farewell and head for home. (See next announcement below.) Labor Day starts the late summer Bay breezes so count on some good sailing on this trip. Waterhole Cove is directly above Dunn s Cove on Harris Creek. From wherever you enter the Choptank, head for the Red 2 mark at the entrance to Harris Creek and follow the marks past Dunn s Cove and into Waterhole Cove. Some charts indicate that it is difficult to get into Waterhole Cove; however, there is plenty of water and it is not a problem. We are looking forward to great weekend and hope you can join us. Please contact Al or Sue at or alkirkendall@verizon.net. September Week Cruise September 5-13 By Debbie Lund If you are interested in a relaxing fall cruise on the Chesapeake, please think about joining the Lunds in September. The plan is to join the Club for both the Labor Day cruise to the Choptank River and the Baltimore cruise on September Think of it as The Bookends Cruise. From Tuesday to Friday, the itinerary will be decided during the week it depends on the wind. If you are interested in joining us, please call John or Debbie at or us at dlund210@gmail.com. Tall-Tales of Past Cruises and Events Severn River Cruise Wrap-Up June By Debbie Lund Despite the weather forecast of thunderstorms and later tornado warnings, three boats participated in the Severn River Cruise. (Member #GA S) RESERVATIONS REQUIRED or REQUESTED FOR: - Pirate Weekend By August 5 - September Week By August 5 PHOTO CREDITS Special thanks to Larry Ricci and Peggy Poe for the photos this month! Saltworks Creek on Saturday and the sun was shining. We were lucky that we did not pick a location in the Chester River because there was a water spout off of Love Point. During the Happy Hour, we realized that the same group had participated in the rather wet and wetter 2008 Baltimore Cruise. I guess these are the hearty or crazy cruisers! [FACT, not guess! - Ed] The ride back on Sunday was very windy-out of the Northwest at 15 to 20. Flying Low was in their element. I m sure Fantastic had a great ride to the South River. Overall it was a great weekend. 4th of July Cruise Brought Beautiful Weather and a relaxing weekend By Sue and Al Kirkendall The Fourth of July weekend brought absolutely beautiful weather, and an extremely nice breeze for the trip over to the uncrowded and peaceful anchorage in Grays Inn Creek on the Chester River. The Kirkendalls on Flying Low were joined by Jon and Rob Mullarky on Betelgeux, John and Debbie Lund on MinVan IV, Ed and Peggy Poe on Ravenous, George and Gail Braun on Quicksilver and Bob Krapfel and Gabrielle Belli aboard Paradox. We were also treated to the Company of past MRSA members Joe and Carol Glorioso aboard Cefalu and their friends Glen and Val Zemple aboard Fancy Free II. Happy Hour started at 5:30 and a good time was had by all. The party broke up just before dark so everyone could get back to their boats and enjoy the Rock Hall fireworks. We had an excellent location to view the fireworks. For such a small town they really put on a nice show (some say the best display on the East coast). Saturday morning the cruisers came back together for a community brunch which included a variety of breakfast favorites. No one left hungry. All of the cruisers departed early on Sunday morning because of the threat of storms that never materialized. Winds for the trip home were very light and for the most part the iron jenny was the preferred means of propulsion. After the brunch sadly Paradox and MinVan IV departed for other activities and the remainder of the cruisers enjoyed a very relaxing day. At dinner time everyone again came together for pot luck supper, and what a feast it was. The ladies had obviously worked hard to get everything together and it was a veritable feast complete with corn on the cobb prepared by Gail Braun. We were also joined by Pete and Ronnie Barill on their Choey Lee to top off the evening. Sue and I had a great time and would like to thank all of those who participated in the cruise and look forward to seeing everybody next time. 5 Dog Day Afternoon Magothy and Beyond, July 18th By Peggy Poe Some cruises start early on Saturday morning and end on Sunday afternoon. Some cruises are held over a three day weekend and go a fairly long distance. Some really long cruises are planned to last a week and have several destinations with stops at marinas and restaurants. All of these cruises have much to offer cruising sailors. The Dog Day Afternoon Cruise is unique. It is short and sweet. It starts and ends in one afternoon and evening, but it provides the participants with the opportunity to sail (if Mother Nature cooperates), swim, and eat. What more can a sailor want? This year s cruise was just about perfect. With Mother Nature providing more than adequate good air on th July 18, Charlene Roberts (L) and Joe eleven boats Tierney (R) enjoy the great day. converged on Eagle Cove at about 4:00 pm after sailing (or powering) in the afternoon. With Norm and Chris Poulsen s Blue Moon as anchor boat, and the Poes Ravenous as the grill boat, there was plenty of swimming and chowing down. With the unofficial count of 50 kids and adults, cruise leaders Larry and Chris Ricci served over 70 hot dogs with all the fixings. Chris Ricci was the grillmeister while Peggy Poe squeezed the ketchup, mustard, and relish. A guest on Ravenous, Tanner Roberts, helped to form an assembly line to get the dogs from Ravenous to the official Three Tierney beauties seen on the Raft-Up: Meaghan, Cate wait staff of Charlene (Mom/daughter-in-law), and Grace. Meaghan & Grace are Joe Roberts (a Junior Tierney s granddaughters. [Nice MRSA T-shirt! Ed] Training sailor) and her friend Kimmie. No one went hungry in the MRSA raft-up on that afternoon. Even Commodore Toni Hughes got in on the act, taking orders and making sure everyone got the correct condiment on their hot dog. Don t miss this cruise next year. [Thanks to Larry Ricci for the photographs. Ed] Page 5

6 Special Membership Notices and Announcements Parade of Lights Boat(s) Needed for December 2009 By the Board of Governors This is the third broad brush announcement on this subject. Please respond to any member of the Board if you have an interest in providing safe passage for this very grande affair. MRSA has been very successful in its participation in the Eastport Yacht Club Parade of Lights Boat Parade in Annapolis for several years. We have kept all of the decorations since the last time that we had an entry in the parade on the possibility that the club would have an entry in the future. The BOG would now like to find out if there is sufficient interest from the club to participate in a Parade of Light to make it worthwhile to continue to store all the decorations. The club has made a significant investment in both time and expense to make the items that we have used. However, if there is not sufficient interest from the club to continue participating in the near future, it is not necessary to store the items from past parade. The success that MRSA experienced in the past resulted from the Gardners and Seals leading the efforts. If you would be interested in leading the effort to participate or provide a boat to use in the parade, please express your interest by sending an to the Commodore Toni Hughes at Commodore@magothysailing.com. Classified Advertisements From time to time it has been customary to have classified ads in The Old Man to allow members to make nautical articles (little pun there) available within the membership. Please respond directly to the seller if you are interested in the items listed Catalina-36 - tall rig, wing keel (4 2 draft). $50,000. Contact Harvey Paskin for more information concerning this fully loaded and well-treated cruising beauty: or HMPLCHAYIM@verizon.net. 13' Boston whaler Sport Like new! Call Racing Corner MRSA Racing Corner for May 2009 Up To Date MRSA Racing News By Craig Colthorpe, Rear Commodore As racing events and results occur during the season they are being posted rapidly by Mike Mullarky on the MRSA web site and announced via the RACERS list. If you are a racer and are not on this list, or not sure, please contact Web Master Mike Mullarky at or webmaster@magothysailing.com to put your address on the list. Similarly, if you are a Cruiser (or both), contact Mike. MRSA does not distribute these addresses outside of the Club and the only use is in connnection with the Club. You will receive no junk mail, heartfelt stories, chain letters, or jokes from us. (Too bad for you.) Just the good MRSA information you crave. Page 6

7 Junior Sailing Program By Rich Hughes This year s outstanding youth sailing camp was a rousing success and we all learned a lot about weather also. Held from June 15 th through June 26 th, we had good boats, instructors, junior sailors, and volunteers for both weeks. Sometimes we had good wind and sunny skies sometimes at the same time even! Many thanks to all who worked to make this year s cam a success! See also the Article on page 5. Corum Cup Stickers have arrived, and they are FREE! Do you have yours yet? Kids love stickers - and CBYRA now has Corum Cup stickers promoting CBYRA High Point competition which every Junior Sailor in our program will want on their boat. To order some FREE stickers for club or regatta giveaways, please contact office@cbyra.org. Thanks to our super sponsor Corum! These stickers are cool! [So are the watches. Ed] Oh, By the Way Kathy and Bert Polk enjoying a peaceful Black Hole Creek sail in penny-candy, Windmill dog watch. Chances are he will know what you mean. Scuttlebutt nautical lore By Good Dogs Three or even four years ago, Harvey Paskin spiced up his rollicking Master-of- Ceremonies Joke-Fest at the Commodore s Ball with a few comments about nautical terms reaching the current vernacular from the far reaches of sailing ships of old. Those were the days of wooden ships and iron men as opposed to more recent times of fiberglass boats and gentle women. One of the terms Harvey did not relate was dog watch. This really is a nautical term not just a pastime. The term did not originally take on the common MRSA sailor s vernacular you are thinking of - associated with a dog or multiple dogs and (usually) a dinghy at sunset or first light. However, if it is appropriate on your next cruise, feel free to send someone on the However, the term does not have canine origins in nautical lore. The term is used to indicate the period of a standard ship s watch from 1600 to 2000, or the dog watch. The watch is typically, though not always, split in half to form the first dog and the second dog (or last dog ). It is probable that the watch was originally split to allow seating at the evening meal for the watch standers during the only watch period that encompasses a full mealtime. Another good reason for a split watch is that with the traditional 4 on, 8 off watch standing, the watch standers, once assigned a time period, would never get out of that time period. (Midnight or noon to 4, 4 to 8, and 8 to 12 curiously not usually named in nautical time.) While some watch standers like the time locked in to help with their sleep cycle, others are not so keen on it. By splitting the watch, a rotation is established so that Page 7

8 everyone has their share of the day/night rotation. Note also that each 30 minutes of the watch period is marked by sounding 1 through 8 bells with the conclusion of each watch marked by the sounding of 8 bells. Dogs end at 4 and 8 bells. The exact origin of the term is contested. The dog part (not hot dogs for dinner, good buddy!) may have been derived from the fact that the person standing one of these shorter watch periods was dodging the watch. The term dodge watch may have evolved further into dog watch. Of course, you may be dodging one watch, but stand by. If, say, you got the first dog (4 to 6), you then skip the 6 to 8 and the 8 to 12, but you roll right back on rotation at the mid-watch (midnight to 4 AM). Such a deal. Yawn. Probably better to take the dog to the beach in a quiet cove, enjoy a cold Diet Dr. Pepper while watching the sunset, and retire to your bunk for the evening and watch the dog on the beach again in the morning..!
