Larry was aboard his C&C 27, Options, Wednesday evening, April 21, in preparation for our first race of the season when he was stricken with a heart attack. Please keep Chris and son David in your thoughts and prayers. Wes McNair, Commodore Calendar of Upcoming Events - May 1, Saturday, afternoonish: Cinco de Mayo, Bountiful Betz Bungalow, Cattail Creek - May 8, Saturday: CBYRA Spring Classic Sail - May 15 16, Sat Sun: Annapolis, City of Love Cruise, Annapolis - May 29 31, Sat Mon: Wye River Memorial Day Cruise - June 4, Friday, 6 9 PM: Poes Place, Black Hole Creek on the Magothy Commodore s Comments Big Sail Events Coming newsletter contributions to newsletter@magothy sailing.com Deadline for ALL future issues: 25th DAY OF THE MONTH PRIOR TO publication date By Wes McNair, Commodore Now that we have our first two big on-the-water events in our wake, it s getting easier to see the season ahead. We had 26 boats out for the first race of our Wednesday night series on April 21. That was followed up on Saturday, April 24 with our first cruise and outdoor party, the annual Sockburning at Looper s Beach on Broad Creek. For both events, we have wisely saved weather chits for better days to come. A good start nonetheless, as sailors know better than to let a less than perfect forecast keep them dockside. Thanks to all who participated. Looking ahead, the pace really quickens over the next several weeks. Casa Betz is all aglitter for the Cinco (Uno) de Mayo party; we host a Bay Race right here within the Magothy; undertake 3 cruises and 4 (more) races in May; and point Page 1

Mark your calendars and don t let these all slip past. Junior training is coming together nicely for June. There is a lot the average member doesn t see in the management of this critical MRSA activity. The schedule with the Grachur Club has been reconciled very favorably for both groups as we have dealt with an unprecedented demand for spaces in a very equitable fashion, and other necessary arrangements are coming together. Zoe Forsyth, Joe Tierney, and Rich Hughes of MRSA, along with Dan Andrew of Grachur all deserve a pat on the back next time you see them. With so much in the works, I don t see how our collective paths won t cross at least once in the coming month. See you there! Upcoming Cruises & Events Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Early! Annapolis, City of Love Cruise, May By Rich Hughes, lover Annapolis has been voted one of the most romantic cities in the country. Arrive early and pick up a mooring ball for Page 2

Have you wished that you could fly over the Bay with the ospreys, the seagulls or the other sea birds? Perhaps you have daydreamed of being a Navy pilot and soaring over the earth. If you are stuck here on earth but able to take a day off on Tuesday, May 18 th, why not join Ed Poe on Ravenous and sail down the Bay to watch the Blue Angels on their practice day?! (That may be as close as you can get to soaring!) Ravenous and crew will leave the pier in Black Hole Creek at about 10:30 and will enjoy the day sailing to Annapolis. Bring your lunch, and there will be water and drinks aboard. The air show off the mouth of the Severn will begin at around 1:00, and Ravenous should be back at the pier by about 4:30, after a beautiful day on the water (if Mother Nature is cooperative). Call Ed Poe by Sunday, May 16 at or him at mpoe1@comcast.net to let him know you d like to join the fun. By car the pier is off of Mountain Road near North Shore Road. Tall-Tales of Past Cruises and Events April Membership Dinner Hella s By Jon Mullarky, Vice Commodore The MRSA April meeting was held on April 8 at Hellas. Nineteen members attended and enjoyed Hellas famous buffet, which included delicious crab cakes. Vice Commodore Jon Mullarky shared his spring commissioning checklist and discussed boating experiences he has had that might have been prevented, if spring commissioning included checks of components that ultimately failed. Special Membership Notices and Announcements Welcome new members! By Peggy Poe Ahoy!! New Members Abound!!! Spring has sprung and we are full of new members and happy to welcome them! In no particular order, please say hello to five new member families who were recently welcomed by the Board of Governors. These new members are all interested in our Junior Training program. Elaine and Ben Reed with their children Kyle, Willj, Rachel, and Abby live in Whitehurst Page 4

5 and own an Alberg 30 named Scout. Maureen and David Jones and children Brendan and Campbell also live in Whitehurst and are owners of a Pearson 26 named Wild Goose. Christine and Chet Langemak and their children Eddie, Andrew, Charlie and Matthew live in Pasadena. They ply the Magothy on a Grand Bank 42 named The Next Chapter. Jacqui and Tom Riley and children Jessica, Jimmy and Savannah also live in Whitehurst, and can t wait for Junior Training. Anna and Kevin O Connor and daughter Gracie also Whitehurst residents are the last new members welcomed by the BOG. As you can see, our Junior Training Program is very popular with the Whitehurst community right across the river from the Grachur Club. Welcome to all our new members and jump right in to all of our activities. New Maryland PFD Laws By Jon Mullarky, Vice Commodore There is a new Maryland Law concerning PFD wear by Children and Operation of Recreation Boats by Persons under the Age of 16. The Governor has signed newly passed legislation that will require children under the age of 13 to wear an approved life jacket on recreational boats. The law does not apply to a vessel which is moored or anchored; or a when the child is below deck or in an enclosed cabin. The new law also requires persons under the age of 16 operating a numbered vessel in the State to possess a Certificate of Boating Safety Education and be under supervision of a person, onboard, who has obtained a Certificate of Boating Safety Education or was born before July 1, Read it at The change requires possession of the certificate. In the past you could just tell the DNR you had a certificate. (Not telling the truth is a BIG no-no.) The new law is effective October 1, Classified Advertisements From time to time it has been customary to have classified ads in The Old Man to allow members to make nautical articles (little pun there) available within the membership. Please respond directly to the seller if you are interested in these deals. By Joe Berchielli, Race Committee Chair Magothy racers: The Spring Classic is scheduled to be held on the Magothy River on Saturday, May 8. Two races are scheduled to be run that day, around our MRSA racing marks. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a Race Committee for this event. If there is no race committee, the event will be cancelled and the races will not be run on May 8. Not to worry! - Race Committee Volunteer Found! We need a skipper, preferably one who has not yet volunteered for 2010 RC duty, to volunteer for this assignment as soon as possible. Some details of the event can be found on the MRSA website. The Spring Classic NOR (Notice of Race) can be seen by clicking on "Racing, then "Racing Instructions, then "Spring Classic NOR. If there are any questions, please contact MRSA Rear Commodore Gene Gottschalk or myself OR race_committee@magothysailing.com. Junior Sailing Program Ages 9-16 Junior Training 2010 Anticipation building Exciting! By Zoe Forsyth, Fleet Captain Junior Training MRSA's Junior Training Sailing Camp will be held at the Grachur Club on the beautiful Magothy River weekdays from June 21st through July 2nd, beginning at 0830 hours and finishing at 1600 hours. Many of last year's instructors will be returning, and planning is well underway to once again provide a fun and educational experience for young sailors and sailors-to-be. Registration for this year s camp is complete and there is a waiting list. Information for those who have signed up this year will be available shortly and posted on MRSA s web site. If you can help with the boat rigging/cleaning/transporting, your efforts will be greatly appreciated. Questions? Contact Zoe Forsyth at or junior_training@magothysailing.com. Page 6

7 Oh, By the Way The House that Daryl Built By Riverwatcher There is more news on The Great Magothy River Faux Lighthouse Caper. In early January the Annapolis Capital noted that the island home builder has been ordered by the Maryland Department of the Environment to pay $40,000 to rectify offenses against the environment. The case only deals with the stone bulkheading, pier, and wetlands around the 2-acre island, and an associated driveway on the mainland. The $40,000 includes a $15,000 penalty to the Tidal Wetlands Compensation Fund, a $15,000 penalty to the Nontidal Wetlands Compensation Fund, and a $10,000 penalty to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In addition to the penalty money, as a result of the decision, the owner, Daryl Wagner, a builder who failed to apply for or obtain permits prior to construction, will have to rebuild wetlands, create a marsh at the island, and reduce the size of his pier. Other lawsuits are still pending from the Critical Area Commission, the Magothy River Association, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation including one suit arguing the entire house should be torn down. Each case is being handled separately. Immediately following the MDE settlement, attorneys for the CAC, MRA, CBF, and MRSA could not be reached for comment. With discussions ongoing since 2004, it will be interesting to see what changes in Magothy River Association Oyster Dive 2010 Mostly contributed by Paul Spadaro, MRA If you go to OR maybe the Magothy River Association web site, you can see photos of the Earth Day 2010 Oyster Dive in the Magothy. As Paul Spadaro of the MRA noted, Naval Academy Midshipmen teamed up with students from Anne Arundel Community College to complete the most successful restoration dive in the 10 year history of the Academy workshop. Divers collected oysters at Dobbins Hill and Chest Neck Point reef restoration sites and measured oyster growth. Data collected was impressive. The oysters in the Magothy are very healthy and growing beautifully well. To restore the Magothy, 200 million oysters will be required. To date less then 10 million oysters have been planted. While we are way short of the restoration goal, we are very encouraged with these results. Thanks to all MRA volunteers, Splash dive center, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Ferry Point Marina, Cypress Marina, Lake Shore Fire Department and MRA's dive coordinator Dick Carey. Treasure the Chesapeake!
