Commodore s Comments The Fun Part of Boating is Underway!! By Mike Bonham, Commodore Well, all the sanding, waxing, painting and other boat jobs are just a faded memory and have proven to be worth the blood, sweat and tears. Now, the fun part of boating is well underway. Speaking of fun, the MRSA is in the full fun mode. We have had some great events--a productive winter planning party, a great annual brunch at the Chartwell Country Club, one of the best sock burning parties ever with over 50 members attending equaling over 100 smoldering socks up in smoke, the new members' cruise that actually had new members in attendance, Wednesday Night Races are providing great competition, several boats made their way to Annapolis for the Blue Angels who put on a great show, a well-attended Memorial Day cruise to the Wye River, and we are just getting started with our in-water cruises' schedule and racing season. So, get in your boat, your car, or put on your boat shoes and get to the next event. These are the days we were dreaming of during the Polar Vortex. Please take the time to thank your board members and cruise leaders for the awesome job they are doing for MRSA. Not only have your MRSA board and cruise leaders been busy making sure your boating season is one of the best yet, the DNR has been busy dredging the Kent Narrows channel this spring. During the past boating season, many boats grounded, some seriously, on the encroaching shoals. Although, the Army Corps of Engineers acknowledged the problem, they lacked the funds to undertake the project. Queen Anne's County Board of Commissioners decided to front part of the funding for the 5600 foot long northern section of the channel. The remaining money came from the Maryland DNR Waterway Improvement Fund. The dredging is now completed with 7-foot mean low water. So, check the tide and give it a try. You can save some time on the trip to the Eastern Bay if you don't get hung up at Red Eye s, Fisherman s, or one of the other eateries along Kent Narrows. (No sand bars in thee area, but you can get hung up there for hours, so give it a wide birth. Looking on the MRSA ship's radar of events, I see the June Picnic on June 7th, the Summer Solstice Cruise on June 21st and Dog Day cruise June 28th. You know I always thought that Dog Days where in August, but then I 1

realized that our Dog Day cruise has nothing to do with the sultry days of summer and is named after the massive amount of hot dogs that are consumed at the cruise. I guess you never stop learning in this sport of sailing. Well, the wind is picking up, so, I think I'll go for a sail. See you on the water. Upcoming Cruises & Events MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR JUNE 7TH - PSA MOONLIGHT RACE Submitted by John Aellen, Potapskut Sailing Association Building on the successes learned from changes PSA made to its Rock Hall race, (formerly Queenstown), PSA is tweaking a few aspects of their Overnight Race as follows: 1. Short on crew? NO problem! We've added a new Double-handed class (please fly yellow "Q" flag) 2. All fleets will sail the short course except the Multihull A class, sailing the long course 3. The "short" course is now nautical miles 1.9 miles longer than before 4. The "long" course is now 35.6 nautical miles 2.4 miles shorter than before 5. Sandy Point Light is no longer a mark of the course, replaced by "F" Red Fl 4 sec, in between Baltimore Light and Sandy Point Light 6. Mark D northwest of Love Point light has been added It is hoped that these changes will (a) increase Region II participation with "bonus points" awarded for long distance races and (b) deep draft boats will no longer have an issue rounding Sandy Point Light to port and (c) racers will finish by midnight to head into PSA s all-you-can-eat breakfast. Skippers and crew can come by land or sea, and are welcome to tie up at PSA s dock. For more information, please visit: (use calendar or racing links) or to register online use See you at the party! John Aellen Potapskut Sailing Association June Picnic and Cruise to Black Hole Creek, Saturday, June 7, 5 PM Submitted by Peggy Poe Early in June comes one of our most anticipated events the June picnic. Winter is long gone. Racers are well into the Wednesday night series. Socks will have been burned. Cruisers will have figured out how to get the anchors down AND back up. So June is a perfect time to celebrate the coming of summer with a picnic. Make a plan to welcome summer with MRSA. Mark Saturday, June 7 th with RED Stars, and come to the Poes on the North side of Black Hole Creek on the North side of the Magothy by land or by sea for a great MRSA picnic. Hope to see you there. Sharing your favorite appetizers and deserts would be oh so delightful! There will be lots of burgers, hot dogs, all the fixings and you will be bringing delicious salads, sides, appetizers and desserts! Of course, MRSA will provide beverages to be sure you will not be thirsty. I think that Vice Commodore Dave Pirone even said there would be ice cream. Sounds like a super picnic. If you are coming by water, you can raft-up in the outer area of the creek, and dinghy in to our pier. We will find a place for your dinghy. If you are without a dinghy, I m sure we can find transportation into the party for you. Give a call at my cellphone

If you are driving, there will be signs to help you find your way. Off of Mountain Road, turn right on North Shore Road. Look for the MRSA sign and take a right at Eagle Hill Road and then take the immediate right onto Shady Lane. Follow Shady Lane for about a mile. There are about 5 places near the house, but most people will need to park (nose in) against the chain link fence. Our address is 438 Shady Lane, Pasadena. Please call if you get lost See you on Saturday at 5:00. St. Michaels Cruise August 9 10, 2014 Submitted by Bill Taylor & Stephania Braham Mark your calendars for the MILES RIVER YACHT CLUB S LOBSTER FEAST. Last year, the lobster was delicious and the party was fun. Please be advised, there are currently no boat slips available at the Miles River Yacht Club. There is anchorage space in front of the Club. Additional details to follow. Tall Tales and True Tales of Past MRSA Events 2014 SOCK BURNING April 26 Submitted by: RT Klamm and Cecelia Hayes, Cruise Leaders April 26th brought satisfactory weather as Eddie Looper once again provided a fireside atmosphere at Looper Beach along the shores of Broad Creek off the Magothy as MRSA members came together for their annual sock burning ritual. The 5 o'clock hour brought varied hors d'oeuvres, main course, and desserts to the dish to pass table. With store bought hot dogs, Chick-Filet nuggets and bakery éclairs, it was obvious not many took up the "best food item" challenge. While not as many creative dishes as the previous year were available, Mike Mullarky peeped in attempting to convince everyone roasting deeply discounted Easter Peeps in the campfire or adding them to a s'more was a food item. Taking the award for the Best Food Item were Toni and Rich Hughes who intrigued and dazzled all with the simplistic scrumptiousness of a "hobo pie." 3

As the sky began to show signs of Mother Nature controlling the conclusion of the event, Commodore Bonham suggested moving forward with festivities lest we'd have to batten down the hatches. At that moment new member, Kelly Goodhue, volunteered to choreograph the elusive assembly into a group photo. She strategically arranged all around the campfire creating not just the perfect venue for a photo but for the next challenge, "Best Sea Story." Members and guests took turns telling tales of failed attempts (by a thousand miles) to reach the Bahamas, rafting sailors left aground (by more than one tide swing) scowls in distress, even how the word shark can send one from the water to the boat deck in a hurry. Even Grandpa Gribbin's tail of a shower curtain wardrobe couldn't make the cut as he was upstaged by his grandson, Tyler Tate, and friend for Honorable Mention with their numerous stories of antics that boys' imaginations seem to attract. In the end The Best Sea Story Award went to Donna Prucnal for her humble admission after 25 years that she actually was required to be tested under trial by fire in order to reach her matrimonial objective. With the campfire serving it's purpose of providing ambiance for fellowship, a cooking stove for hot dogs, s'mores and hobo pies, the time was at hand to culminate the event with it's intended purpose: burning socks! There were big socks, small socks, old socks, short socks, long socks, clean socks, dirty socks, even church socks...i mean holy socks. With the award for Most Unique Socks going to Leilani Cochran for her knee high dark blue 52-year-old socks. Golly, it's hard to part with some things. As the last sock went into the fire and all present extended thanks the Eddie Lopper once again for providing a lovely venue and almost on Que, precipitation prevailed. Everyone pitched in with rapid deployment, the grounds were secured and all was neatly stored away until next year. BUT WAIT... I did overhear Eddie Looper suggesting to Commodore Bonham perhaps a fall oyster roast would be in order. So mates, there's one for you to take up with your Vice Commodore. Ceal and RT want to thank the numerous individuals that took the time to privately approach them and thank them for the efforts expended organizing the event. They both extend their appreciation to all those who set aside the time to attend and participate. Any enjoyment received was the result of an inclusive group effort. Special Membership Notices and Announcements MRSA PHOTO CONTEST Submitted by Myron Dorf, Judge The MRSA photo contest is up and running. There are no entry fees and there are prizes for the winners. Meet Kelly and Ted Goodhue who live in Pasadena and have four sons in college. They are looking forward to cruising with us on their Pearson 365, Fantasia. Kelley and Chris Sieger are co-owners with Drew and Linda Dowling of a Hunter 36 named She s the One. They are also interested in cruising. Chris and Kelley, with daughter Christina, live in Arnold. Racing Corner Wednesday Night after-race Raft-Up, Wednesday, June 11 Please remember we have an enjoyable racer gathering June 11, Wednesday: the always-enjoyable Wednesday Night Racing Raft-Up Social!!! Overnight Race gets a new look Becomes the new Moonlight Race Submitted by Shep Drain, Rear Commodore Facing years of declining participation, it was time to take a serious look at PSA s Overnight Race. Recent interest in this race essentially has been reduced to two classes Multihulls and Albergs. Fortunately, there were enough Multihulls to have two individual starts. In 2013, PSA had no PHRF A boats, and we were forced to combine the B-C fleet to have one class just to award a trophy. There we just two Cruising class boats entered, bringing the total to a paltry 19 racers. When participation drops off this dramatically, the time comes to make serious changes or consider dropping the event altogether. 5

In hopes of attracting more participants and reduce the stress on PSA s resources, we are implementing a few changes as follows: 1. The short course is now nautical miles 1.9 miles longer than before. 2. The long course is now 35.6 nautical miles 2.4 miles shorter than before. 3. All fleets will sail the short course except the Multihull A class, sailing the long course. 4. Sandy Point Light is no longer a mark of the course, replaced by F Red Fl 4 sec, in between Baltimore Light and Sandy Point Light. 5. Mark D northwest of Love Point light has been added. It is hoped that these changes will (a) increase Region II participation with bonus points awarded for long distance races and (b) deep draft boats will no longer have an issue rounding Sandy Point Light to port and (c) racers will finish by midnight to head into PSA s all-you-can-eat breakfast. Skippers and crew can come by land or sea, and are welcome to tie up at PSA s dock. Lastly, we have proposed giving this race a new name, (MOONLIGHT RACE) which often times is just enough to draw the additional interest and participation making these turnarounds possible. If the lunar calendar is correct, our revamped event will be blessed with clear skies and a bright half-moon. See you at the party! John Aellen Potapskut Sailing Association The season started for us on a windy note blowing in the low to mid twenty's. It is rare to sail in such high winds for a Wednesday night race and the fearless showed up and got around the course. A couple brave crews even had chutes up for the 10 minutes it took to get down the run. I want to encourage anyone who has not signed up for RC duty to do so. If you want help with the process please let the RC chair know and we will work to make someone available. Please check the racing web page as amendments to the sailing instructions will be posted. At this point we will run the same splits and sequence as last year. I noticed that many of the crew out sailing had on their PFD's and I was happy to see that with the water still so cold and the wind high. Sail safe and have FUN. Racers who have concerns, suggestions or a topic they would like to be covered in this column, please send a note to the race committee at race_committee@magothysailing.com. Please contact Shep Drain, Phil Heldrich (MRSA) or Jim Gary (PSA) at race_committee@magothysailing.com for more details on how to be a successful racer this spring.
