1 Rappahannock RiveR Yacht club irvington, va May 2016 the headway Comments Byfrom the Commodore Tom Decker, Commodore Photos by Tom Wicks Board Members at the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony April has been a big month. The annual club cleanup day went on as scheduled even though the weather gave us rain, sleet, snow and hail. A grateful thank you is due to those hardy souls who turned up to give our clubhouse a good cleaning. The club s 80th annual opening day, April 16, was held in much better weather. Over sixty members and guests were present to usher in another sailing season. Tradition was upheld with the firing of the cannon after the flag and pennants were raised. Reverend Dr. Grace Harley blessed our fleet and recognized the passing of those members we lost in the past year. Following the formal ceremony, the social committee provided hors de oeuvres. People gravitated to the porch to enjoy the beautiful weather, relaxing, sharing boating stories, and reconnecting with those who have returned from winter travels. (continued on page 2)

This open house will introduce interested and prospective members to basic sailing and give an opportunity for an on-the-water experience. The Ty s race every Wednesday and invite all members to come and participate or simply watch. There is room on the Mark boat and Wildfire to see the races. Check the Poop Sheet for times. Finally, as a reminder: there is a Boating Safety Class on May 14 for all those who do not have their boat operator licenses that are required by July 1. 3 May 2016 From the Rear Commodore By Ed Peake, Rear Commodore Page 3 I would like to thank all the members who came out for the annual Clean Up Day at the Yacht Club. Even though the weather didn t cooperate we had 32 members who braved the cold and dreary weather to help spruce up the clubhouse, the grounds and the docks. There is still time to sign up for the Boat Safety Class on May 14th from 8:00am to 5:00pm at the Club House. July 1st is the deadline for everybody to have their boat safety card to operate a boat in Virginia. The Beavers removed the cover off the pool and turned the water on, so it won t be long now, then we just have to wait for the water to warm up enough so we can enjoy the pool again. 4 Page 4 May 2016 Kayak Fleet By Jerry Wachter Beautiful Paddle on the Dragon Run On Friday April 15th we had a beautiful day to paddle the 3 ½ mile Dragon Run. Stephanie arranged for our group to make this paddle. Temperature, light winds and plenty of sunshine made for a perfect day on the water. It truly is a pristine waterway and one which only allows paddling a few weeks during the spring and fall due to rapid growth of vegetation and lower water levels. Here are some of the photos I took on the Run. Check out information about the Dragon Run and the Friends of the Dragon Run www. dragonrun.org. 5 May 2016 Race Committee By Tom Chapman Fleet Captain PHRF Racing on the Rappahannock Begins May 15! Page 5 The weather is warming up, boats are being launched and it is time for the Spring PHRF Racing season to begin. Our Season begins with the YPRCC Spring Regatta, Sunday May 15 (this is a change from the original May 14 date.) Second up is the RRYC Spring Regatta on Saturday June 11 with Vice Commodore Gary Hooper as PRO. Last is RRYC s June 25 Single Handed Regatta with Mike Romey as PRO. Gary and Mike are planning excellent racing and encourage your participation. A new feature of these series for 2016 is that Typhoon s are invited to participate as a one design group. Also, don t forget that YPRCC s PHRF Wednesday night series begins on April 27 on the Corrotoman for those not racing in our Typhoon Spring series. For 2015 we had increased participation in PHRF racing and would like to continue that trend in If you have not been participating in our PHRF racing but think you would like to give me a call at Typhoon Fleet By Tom Watkins Typhoon Fleet Commander The Typhoon Fleet had a great start to the 2016 season with a kick-off banquet on April 20. More than 50 people enjoyed a wonderful meal arranged by Harry Wells at RRYC. Business was discussed by each member of the Typhoon leadership team as we start the sailing year is the third time we will host the Typhoon Nationals at RRYC as well as 6-week spring and fall racing seasons. Our 2016 Ty Leadership team is as follows: Fleet commander Communications Chair Race Committee Chair Social Chair Typhoon Nationals Chair Cruising Chair Tom Watkins Ned Crockett Tom Linville Jane and Harry Wells Danielle Kuper Bruce Julian Community Fun Sail Saturday April 30 at Noon: Sue and Greg Kirkbride are leading the RRYC fun sail and open house on Saturday April 30. Scott Vail will be PRO and we will have at least 8 Typhoons in Carter Creek to make their way around the creek to give non-rryc members a chance to experience sailing, see our club and have a cook-out provided by Craig Akers and the RRYC social committee. We hope to generate some interest in sailing at RRYC, and maybe even some new RRYC members! We were pleased to have 8 members of the Piankatank River Typhoon fleet join us for the start of the season and look forward to having them join us during Typhoon Nationals and the racing season. We look forward to seeing you on the creek!
6 Page 6 May 2016 Cruising Fleet By Poli and Mike Romey Yorktown Bound..And Points Beyond - Spring Cruise 2016 It s time to be on the water again so let s get ready for the Spring Cruise This year the cruise has a long and a short leg to give everyone a chance to enjoy some time on the water. The short leg traveling south to Yorktown is May The longer leg will include a trip to Cape Charles after Yorktown and is May We ll start the cruise on Saturday, May 21 in Carters Creek with cruisers arriving in time to enjoy the club s May Dinner at 5:30 (be sure to sign up!). Other stops along the way, include Jackson Creek, Mobjack Bay (Ware River and Severn River), Yorktown, and Cape Charles. The Yorktown leg of the cruise allows for a six day adventure; the longer cruise for those looking for more time on the water is 10 days. After a short Captains meeting Sunday on the RRYC docks around 9:00, cruisers will set out for Jackson Creek (Sunday), anchoring there for the evening. On Monday the cruise will take us to Mobjack Bay on the Ware River, and then to Yorktown for 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday) where cruisers will have time to do some land activities such as visiting Historic Yorktown and the American Revolution Museum or enjoying a meal at one of the excellent restaurants in the area. Cruisers will have the option of a slip at the York River Yacht Haven or anchoring out in Sarah Creek. For those cruisers planning the shorter leg of the Spring Cruise, it will be time to leave Yorktown Wednesday around mid-afternoon and travel the approximately 16 nm through Swash Channel to an anchorage in the Severn River. The next morning cruisers will head north, with plans to anchor in Jackson Creek before returning to their home port on Friday. Cruisers heading to Cape Charles can leave the York River on Thursday morning, spend two days exploring the Cape Charles Town Center and enjoying the Memorial Day Week-end in this quaint town, maybe spending the day at the beach or enjoying more restaurant fare. Slips at the Cape Charles Yacht Center will be available. On Sunday it will be time to head north and back to each boat s home port. Decisions on a stopping point Sunday will be determined by wind and cruisers choice. Polli and Mike Romey are Cruise Captains. We look forward to seeing you on the water! The Community Sailing Day Photo by Herb Aman Part of the Typhoon Fleet sailing on the Rappahannock River. As a service to the community RRYC is offering an opportunity for twenty families to learn about the fun of sailing at no cost. The Community Sailing Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 30. Skippers and participants should be at RRYC by noon. The program will begin at 12:15 pm with a chalk talk and a Skipper s Meeting conducted by expert sailors. Community members will be introduced to basic sailing and learn what it is like to prepare for a sailing regatta. At 1:00 pm participants and skippers will board the sailboats for their on-the-water experience that may include a trip around a race course. Once the sailing experience is finished, the boats will return to RRYC for fellowship, awards, and a cook-out picnic on the porch. This promises to be a fun afternoon for families and friends.
7 May 2016 From the Galley By Craig Akers Page 7 Not only were the boats and sailors blessed during the Blessing of the Fleet, but the service itself was blessed with nice weather. Members and friends gathered for the service at 16:30, went onto the docks to get their boats blessed, and then adjourned to the clubhouse for cocktails and heavy hors d oeuvres. Generally this is one of the big Club events of the season. This year s crowd, however, was small for some reason; out-of-town, family visits, illness, or maybe better offers. Those who did attend enjoyed themselves as they participated in the usual camaraderie. Thanks to Terry Brydon, Sissy Crowther, Kathie Hegler, Sue Kirkbride, and Polli Romey for putting together appetizers ahead of time; as well as to Jan Akers, Glenda Decker, Bev & Brian Hart, and Greg Kirkbride for coming out early Saturday afternoon to prepare the rest of the hors d oeuvres and set up for the social. Thanks also to Kathie Hegler and Ed Peake for contributing their model boats to the Clubhouse decor. It really helped make things look festive. Come out in May to share in the friendship and storytelling that is typical of the RRYC gatherings. The weather promises to be nice again (as the heat of the Summer has not usually decended upon us in May). and the fare will include a New Orleans style barbeque shrimp recipe that originated in 1953 and was made famous by Pascal s Manale Restaurant in New Orleans, varietal tomato salad, roasted corn, and key lime pie for dessert. It s finger food folks, so we will have plenty of napkins on hand, AND LOTS of FRENCH BREAD for SOPPING UP THE SAUCE. We won t make it too spicy, so come on out. Wear something you don t mind dripping sauce on. Make reservations by sending an to dinner@rryc. org. The deadline for reservations and cancellations is 08:00 on Monday, Hope to see you there. New Orleans Style Barbeque Shrimp Varietal Tomato Salad Roasted Corn Key Lime Pie Submitting Items to The Headway All items for publication should be submitted via to headway@rryc.org no later than the 20 th of the prior month (i.e. by May 20 th for June publication).
