Rappahannock RiveR Yacht club irvington, va April 2016 the headway Typhoon Fleet By Tom Watkins Typhoon Fleet Commander Training session at RRYC] The first Typhoon event of 2016 was held March 12th when Jerry Latell, with the help of Tom Chapman, Arabella Denvir, and Ned Crockett, conducted the Spring Tune-Up Seminar at RRYC. The event was well-attended and received rave reviews. In a program that is becoming an important annual tradition, Jerry used his scaled-down model sailboat to demonstrate rig tuning, sail set, and various adjustments to improve boat performance. April promises to be an exciting month for Typhoon events beginning with the annual Typhoon Spring Social to be held April 20. This exciting event is planned for all Typhoon captains, crew, and those without a Typhoon but who want to be involved in some capacity. Heavy hors d oeuvres, beverages, and dessert will be provided for a cost of $15 per person. Contact Harry Wells at hwells37@ gmail.com for reservations. A captains meeting will follow the social for all attendees. Topics discussed will be Typhoon Fleet Rules, Sailing Instructions, and Safety Equipment Requirements. Folks are encouraged to bring copies of each; they can be found on the RRYC Typhoon blog. We will discuss the upcoming Typhoon Nationals. (continued on page 3)

Boats are beginning to come off the hard and sailors are returning north from their winter sailing areas. It will soon be opening day and Blessing of the Fleet. Look for the Messing About in Boats put on by the typhoon fleet at the end of April as an exciting way to involve the community with the club. We are expanding the concept of the First Friday and will open the club house every Friday to promote camaraderie. Bring your guests and introduce them to the club. Expanding our membership is everyone s responsibility, and you are our best PR people. Sail Away Quotes Thought is the Wind Knowledge the Sail and Mankind the Vessel August Hare

Page 4 April 2016 Cruising Fleet By Tom Wicks, Cruising Fleet Commander Reminder for All Cruisers, Mark your calendars for two events in April that will start the club cruising season: Sunday April 10, 1800 at the club for the Kick-off Party. Weekend of April 23/24 for the Shakedown Cruise on the E. Corrottoman. Details for both events will be sent via well in advance and we will ask for all to use Member Connect or other means for the number of attendees in order to best plan food and beverages. See you soon! Come cruising with us. Kayak Fleet News By Jerry Wachter. The Kayak fleet had its first meeting of the year on Friday night March 11th. We discussed possible dates for monthly paddles throughout the year and potential launch sites in Mathews, Gloucester, Lancaster, Northumberland and Westmoreland counties. We d love to get many more RRYCers out to paddle with us as we know most of you own a kayak. Our first outing is scheduled for Dragon Run on Friday April 15th. There are a couple of spots left for this trip so if you are interested be sure to contact Stephanie Chaufournier to reserve a kayak. Our May paddle is scheduled for May 7th at the Mathews Town Point Launch. Below is a listing of our proposed monthly paddle dates. Some of the paddles we discussed were; Reedville, Cone River, Whitehouse Creek, Warehouse Landing, Popes Creek, Wareneck, Westmoreland State Park, Deltaville and the Amazon. We are very fortunate to have many launch sites within a one hour drive from here. On April 17th we are inviting the entire RRYC club to join us for a leisurely paddle on Carter Creek. Come on down, bring a lunch and let s make an afternoon of fun on the water. In attendance at our March 11th meeting we had Finlay Smith, Steve Butts, Stephanie Chaufournier, Greg Kirkbride, Linda and Bill DeCoste, Pat and Bruce Julian and Kathy and Jerry Wachter. Also, we will be looking for a full moon outing sometime this spring or early summer. Mark your calendars! June 18, July 16, August 13, September 10, October 22, November 12, December 10. Race Committee By Tom Chapman & Tom Linville As the 2016 Sailing/Racing season is now upon us, RRYC is again in need of Race Committee volunteers. If you have an interest in serving on a Race Committee team, please respond ASAP to this request with an or phone call to RRYC Fleet Captain/PHRF Fleet Commander Tom Chapman (tdchapman@verizon.net, ) ORTyphoon Race Committee Chair Tom Linville (tsailor@aol.com, ). Please let us know your preference and availability for Wednesday evenings and/or weekends, and your level of experience. If you have Principal Race Officer (PRO) experience, or would like to become a PRO, we especially need you. If you are inexperienced with any RC team position, but would like to learn and help out, we want to hear from you, and we will consider holding a Race Committee 101 training seminar as we did last year.

April 2016 From the Rear Commodore By Ed Peake, Rear Commodore Page 5 We have made arrangements again this year with Kilmarnock s Flotilla 33 of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to have the Boat Safety Class on May 14th from 8:00am to 5:00pm. July 1 is the deadline for everyone to have their boat safety card to operate a boat in Virginia (10+ Horsepower). We need a minimum of eight students & the class is free. Contact Ed or peakehaus@hotmail. com. A reminder that we have the Annual Clean-Up Day on April 9. All members are encouraged to participate, as many hands make light work! No special talents are required, so come and enjoy the camaraderie and help spruce up the Club for the coming boating season. We start at 9:00 and lunch will be provided to all participant. In Memoriam Dwight D. Timm passed away peacefully on February 26, 2016, at home surrounded by his loving wife, Sharon, family, friends and his three beloved Westies after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was a much-loved friend of many, and a mentor of a lucky few. Our sympathy to his wife Sharon and family for their loss. Slips Available Boating Season is coming, we have slips open at the yacht club for your sailboat or powerboat, BIG or small Contact Club Manager Kent White at clubmanager@rryc.org or Boating Safety Tip Watercraft and Life Jacket Age Restrictions: No one under the age of 14 may operate any personal watercraft (PWC) on Virginia State Waters. Children under the age of 13 must wear a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (life jacket) when on board any vessel thay is underway, unless they are below deck or in an enclosed cabin.

Page 6 April 2016 Recruiting for Social Committee By Craig Akers The RRYC Social Committee is looking for new members. We have a group of members who enjoy getting together once a month and sharing camaraderie while putting together the monthly Club dinner. Not everyone is able to help every month, and that s fine. Folks travel, have family commitments, and other events to attend, and that s why we can use some new members, so no one is worked to death! No culinary experience is necessary! The typical monthly dinner starts at the very civil hour of 09:00 on Saturday morning and everybody is usually finished and on their way home by 12:00 to kick up their heels, relax, and get ready for cocktails at the Club beginning at 17:30. A work schedule is sent out in advance, and members have the opportunity to sign up for the job they want to tackle. Morning activities include washing, slicing, dicing, stirring, etc. There are duties for all levels of expertise. Can you turn on a faucet? Then you can wash vegetables, pans, and utensils! If you re a little more experienced or adventurous, then you might want to be in charge of a béchamel sauce. Or you can put cloths on the tables and set out the silverware. Evening activities usually involve plating and setting out salads, working the serving line (a great way to meet new members and old, alike), or plating and serving desserts. We try not to have the same people work both morning and evening, but occasionally it is necessary. Then everybody pitches in for cleanup; many hands make light work. Again, that s why we can use some more members. Twice a year, the Blessing of the Fleet in April and the Annual Meeting in November, you get an opportunity to make (or buy) your favorite hors d oeuvre. Some people help almost every month, and some are only able to pitch in once or twice a year. Any and all contributions are appreciated. If you join the Social Committee, you certainly aren t committing to be at the Club every month. But you are signing up for lots of fun and laughter with a great group of people whenever you can be there! If you are interested or want to know more, send an to rryc. craig@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you. From the Galley By Craig Akers The March dinner was a St. Patty s Day celebration Italian style. Irish flags, shamrocks, gold coins, and leprechauns decorated the clubhouse. Festivities started with the usual cocktail hour, approximately fifty members and guests gathered for drinks and appetizers; a huge thanks to Jo & Jack Chamberlain, Eve & Bob German, Allison Gay & Jack McKim, and Jen & Daryl Resio, along with Jan Akers for providing the wonderful appetizers. While the décor was all Irish, the fare was distinctly Italian; a red pepper and Italian sausage lasagna with Appetizers were enjoyed before dinner. Photo by Jan Akers (continued on page 7)

April 2016 From the Gallery (continued from page 6) Page 7 a béchamel sauce, grilled zucchini squash, and a garden salad, finished of with a lemon Italian cream cake with strawberries for dessert. A big thanks to Jan Akers, Candace & Dick Franco, and Sue & Greg Kirkbride for helping slice, dice, wash, peel, and stir Saturday morning to prepare the meal, and for doing double duty and helping serve the meal and dessert Saturday evening. A special thanks to Daryl Resio for grilling the zucchini squash. Come out in April for the Blessing of the Fleet and the cocktail party to follow. Along with cassocks, surpluses, and holy water, the fare will be the traditional heavy hors d oeurvres along with the wine and beer. The cost of the cocktail party is $15 per person. Please make reservations by sending an to dinner@rryc.org. The deadline for reservations is 08:00 Monday morning, April 11. We look forward to seeing everybody there to celebrate the beginning of the new sailing season. Photo by Jan Akers Darryl Resio with a grill full of zucchini.
